The best-of 2014 albums lists continue with FACT, who always put out an interesting list and this year is no exception. You've got a few of the year-end list regulars like FKA twigs, Angel Olsen, Ariel Pink, Grouper, YG, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib and Shabazz Palaces, but also a handful of obscurer rap, electronic and experimental choices. FACT's list is always a good one to find something you missed during the year that you end up falling in love with, so check it out. Also, it's the first list we've seen where Sun Kil Moon beats The War On Drugs! (who actually aren't on here at all).
NPR have posted their Top 50 Albums of 2014, and like it usually is, it's one of the more diverse year-end lists we've seen so far. There's a lot of the indie that shows up on many of these lists (The War On Drugs, St. Vincent, Spoon, Perfume Genius, Angel Olsen, etc), the hip hop (Run the Jewels, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, YG, Isaiah Rashad, etc), the big-name pop (Taylor Swift, Mary J. Blige, Miranda Lambert), the metal (Pallbearer) and plenty of others, as well as classical, jazz, world music, a Latin funk band with an album's worth of Black Sabbath covers, and still more.
Check out their full list in alphabetical order below...
Gazelle Twin's 'Unflesh'
Now that it's December, Best of Lists Season is in full swing. If you're already tired of seeing ones that have The War on Drugs at the top (or near it), you can always rely on UK website The Quietus to offer up something different. They just published their "Albums Of The Year 2014" and topping it is electronic artist Gazelle Twin's second album, Unflesh. Say The Quietus:
On Unflesh, Gazelle Twin - aka Elizabeth Bernholz - doesn't see dualism as an academic exercise or a philosophical plaything. Instead, it's born of bloody experience as she claws and digs her way to its gory, physical core. Puberty, anxiety, miscarriage, illness and euthanasia are all present, and Bernholz's treatment of them ranges from a shuddering disgust to vengeful catharsis to something approaching tender acceptance. The Quietus' list is not without names familiar to readers of our site -- Swans, Scott Walker & Sunn O))), FKA twigs, Aphex Twin, Future Islands -- but it definitely does not follow the beaten path.

DOWNLOAD: Joy Orbison - "Big Room Tech House Dj Tool - TIP!" (MP3)
UK producer Joy Orbison (aka Peter O'Grady) hasn't been to the US in about two years and he recently announced that he'll be going on a short North American tour this February. That tour brings him to NYC for a Blkmarket-presented Nonplus+ Records showcase at a TBA Brooklyn location on February 15. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Joy Orbison will be playing with Nonplus+ head Boddika, and the bill also features Joey Anderson and Blkmarket DJs Taimur & Fahad.
The show doubles as an album release party for Think and Change, an upcoming compilation from NonPlus+ which is due out on February 25. The compilation features a deep house track from Boddika and Joy Orbison ("&Fate") and a wobbly cut from Joy Orbison solo ("Big Room Tech House Dj Tool - TIP!"), both of which you can stream below, and the latter of which you can download above. It also features tracks by Four Tet, Pearson Sound, Martyn, Instra:mental, and more. The full tracklist is below.
Joy Orbison's tour dates also include a London show on the European tour that Mister Saturday Night (Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin's NYC dance party) is going on in February. Mister Saturday Night also has a ton of local events in NYC coming up, including one with FaltyDL.
Speaking of Blkmarket shows at TBA NYC locations, Russian singer/producer Nina Kraviz, who we highlighted last year and who will be featured on the new Brandt Brauer Frick album, is playing one on January 26 with Cem & Rg, Talmur & Fahad, and more guests TBA. Tickets for that one are on sale now. It's the day after the previously discussed Blkmarket-presented Ellen Allien show (tickets).
