Midnight Juggernauts @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - May 9, 2008 (CRED)
Midnight Juggernauts

Last week in dance was pretty amazing. Wednesday night at Studio B the Shoes stole the show with their early live set - an energetic mix of lyrics and good dance beats. SebastiAn's set that followed was a bit on the weird side - it started off poppy, but quickly moved to the more electro/dance oriented. He didn't play anything super new (except his track "Motor" which is great for the floor), had a few good build-ups, but the set as a whole never really came together. After he was finished, Yuksek and Brodinski seemed to have something good going, but half of the half-full Studio B crowd left right after SebastiAn. You can only dance to Bucketheadz's "the Bomb" in the middle of an empty floor for so long before it gets awkward, so regrettably I never got to see where their set went either.

Friday night I enjoyed hearing all of the Midnight Juggernauts electronic undertones at Bowery Ballroom (which were previously drowned out when I saw them at the Terminal 5 with Justice). Despite having a much better time at this show and being able to hear more of the electronic elements of their music, the Midnight Juggernauts live show comes across much more like a rock (dare I say metal) performance than you would expect from hearing their album.

Luckily we decided to head to Le Royale afterwards where we were just in time to catch an hour of great, solidly dance-able tunes from D.I.M. He played many of his own tracks (such as "Is You" and his remix of My People by the Presets), a lot of recent releases, and quite a few remixes and original tracks by Boys Noize. Even though I found so much Boys Noize love a bit odd, it really made me think highly of D.I.M.'s set. I love Boys Noize, but have over done it with his music at this point. I've seen him deejay 5 times over the past year, and have played out Oi Oi Oi. Despite that, something about D.I.M.'s delivery of the tracks was able to make me excited to hear them again. Additionally D.I.M. has a great energy and personality that shines through while he's deejaying. He shouts along, gestures, and really gets the crowd into into it. It was a really refreshing dance experience.

The Black Ghosts @ Glasslands, Brooklyn, NYC - May 10, 2008 (CRED)
Black Ghosts

Saturday night, while I wouldn't call the steamy Glasslands Gallery refreshing, the Black Ghosts set was another breath of fresh air for dance music. Touché's UK-styled beats coupled with Simon Lord's fervent vocals reminded me of when I first started going out to see deejays. Everything sounded fresh and I would come home drenched in sweat with my feet aching, looking forward to doing it all again. That night at Glasslands I could tell I wasn't the only one who felt that way. The Ghosts had the crowd losing it on the dancefloor as they blazed through an hour and a half of great beats laced with live performances of their songs including "I Want Nothing, Any Way You Choose to Give It", "Some Way Through This", and others.

While those are some tough acts to follow, there is some great talent coming through New York this week:

Erol Alkan @ Studio B - May 3, 2008 (CRED)
Erol Alkan

Lots of good dance went down here last weekend, but I was out of town! Luckily one of my dance partners in crime, Paul (Thump Thump), made it out to Studio B on Saturday for Erol Alkan's set:

"Everything about Erol was great last Saturday. The crowd - packed but not that gross, disgusting, Studio B packed. Most everyone was into it, and then Erol crushed it, but not in a "hit you over the head with bangin' tracks" kind of crush. It was more of a complete set, not banger after banger. I liked it because he selected very good, obscure tracks (very few Ed Banger songs) and made them flow. He teased up tons of build-ups and blended them into other build-ups, and then released. It was really, really, one of the more seamless dj sets that I've heard in a while.
The dancing starts early this week with a couple of great events happening tonight (Wednesday, May 7, 2008).........

Kavinsky (CRED)
Kavinsky

As I mentioned last week, after a string of disappointing deejay sets I've been reluctant to allow myself to get too excited even when acts I've previously been amazed by come to town. I did a pretty good job of staying calm leading up to Kavinsky's set at Studio B on Saturday. Firstly, I have to give props to Jen Lasher for spinning a set that was much more interesting than many more well-known DJ sets I've seen recently. She covered quite a lot of ground in terms of dance music, and she wasn't afraid to drop a few oddballs and pop songs in there either. She took a relatively tame and sparse midnight Studio B crowd and whipped them into a dancing frenzy by the time Kavinsky took the decks at 2.

When that finally happened I found myself desperately hoping his set would be good and thankfully it was! He started off well, playing Mr. Oizo's remix of "Merrymaking at My Place" by Calvin Harris (who makes his way back to NYC this Monday), and D.I.M.'s remix of "My People" by The Presets a few songs in. He also played some electro that was less recent, but worked well despite this because of his timing, choices, and good mixing. About a half an hour or so in, something shifted, and Kavinsky's set went from good, to one of the most fun sets I've ever gotten down to. It was the perfect mix of classic dance tracks, brand new electro (he played the two new SebastiAn tracks which are perfect for the floor and a loud system), old electro, and random-ness (Phil Collins - Sussudio?!). He kept "the B"'s floor the most packed I've seen it in a while until a little after 4. It was easily one of the best sets I've witnessed this year. You can read my more detailed review here and stream a playlist I made of close to 20 of the tracks Kavinsky dropped at the B that night.

This weekend is another one full of dance. Get ready to start making decisions. Here is what is happening on Thursday (April 24, 2008) alone!.....

Part 1 talked about last week, and last night. Here's what else is going on this weekend in NYC...

Justin Miller & Jacques Renault
Justin Miller

Justin Miller and Jacques Renault are at Savalas for Pure Magic on Friday night (tonight - April 18, 2008) . Resident deejays for what will hopefully be many more 205 Tuesdays, Jacques and Justin really know how to throw a great party and pack a floor. You are physically unable to resist getting down to their expert disco/house/who knows selections. Friday should be no different, plus they've brought in Max Wowch to add to the madness. Warm up your boogie shoes before you head out Friday night with a modern mix Jacques and Justin did as a part of the DFA Radiomix Series.

Mr. Oizo @ Studio B, Brooklyn, NYC - June 9, 2007 - (CRED)
Mr. Oizo @ Studio B

His set evoked more than one collective "What the fuk???" from us. The Ed Banger crew simply makes and plays some ridiculous music. [lazyrobots]
Kavinsky played the night before. Were they (Kavinsky and/or Oizo) good, or bad?

If you caught me on the Brooklyn Vegan Blog Radio Show this week on Sirius, you might have heard us mention the upcoming People Don't Dance No More party June 15th at the Vault at Element. We'll be dancing to the sounds of one of the newest DFA signees (or is it signings?): Andy Butler of Hercules & Love Affair. Andy's upcoming releases on DFA mix a strong love of early 90s techno and early 80s slutty disco, as well as some collaborations with Antony on vocals.

Check out the Myspace for "Anthene" and "Classique2". Andy did a guest mix for Tim Sweeney's always stellar Beats in Space a few weeks ago (MP3 above). While you are listening shoot an email to the People Don't Dance RSVP $5 reduced list...

The full tracklisting to the Sirius Blog Radio show is all the way down at the bottom of the post.

KavinskyTwo absolutely smashing nights at Studio B this weekend. Friday night has Ed Banger's Kavinsky making his NYC debut at the Fun party. You might recognize Kavinsky's name from your Daft Punk ticket. He's going out on tour with the robots this summer. He loves him some 80s nitemusic.

On Saturday night, Fixed features another super ridiculous Ed Banger NYC debut DJ set from Mr. Oizo. If you listened to dance music, or watched TV in Europe, in 1999 you know "Flatbeat". If you've been listening to the Ed Banger sound this year, you'll know Mr. Oizo from his production work for Uffie, and remixes for Cassius and the Scissor Sisters. Just a word to the wise, its pronounced "Wah-zo" and his beats are as stunted, sleazy, and slutty as they come. His Transexual EP is the sluttiest yet and comes out this summer on Ed Banger. Added bonus, In Flagranti is playing live.

Thanks to your favorite malt likker, Colt 45 is giving free entrance to 300 people to the Fixed party on Saturday. Email TalesofNYC@viceland.com and tell them why you like Colt 45. (editor's note: duh. because it works every time)
