John Zorn

On October 10, Le Poisson Rouge is hosting 'Save The Village: A Benefit Concert,' which will feature performances from avant-garde saxist John Zorn, Thurston Moore (who plays with his band Chelsea Light Moving at 285 Kent tonight [9/12]), guitarist Jesse Harris, TriBeCaStan, Flutterbox, and performance artist John Kelly. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
The benefit goes to support NYU Faculty Against the Sexton Plan:
NYU Faculty Against the Sexton Plan is a group of over 400 of NYU's own faculty members who are working together to fight NYU's outrageous multi-billion-dollar expansion in Greenwich Village. The Sexton Plan, we believe, is financially reckless (and will certainly result in rising tuition at a school where the students are the most heavily indebted in nation), disregards faculty input and governance, will further erode the rich cultural history of the Village, and will bring more than 10,000 more people in foot traffic per day to an already over-developed area with little green space, amongst other harmful effects. We want NYU's administration to focus on education, not real estate. For even more info on the issue, visit here and there's a video below as well.
John Zorn's next performance at The Stone (the venue that he founded and performs at regularly) happens this Saturday (9/15) with Ikue Mori (of DNA and many other things) and Sylvie Courvoisier, who has collaborated with both John and Ikue in the past.
Another upcoming show at The Stone this month is Marc Ribot (who we just mentioned will be one of the guests at the upcoming Medeski Martin & Wood residency) and Roy Nathanson on September 19. In October, The Stone is being curated by Secret Chiefs 3 member Timba Harris, and shows include Kayo Dot plays Toby Driver's "In The L..L..Library Loft" on October 6, Secret Chiefs 3 plays "Masada" on October 11 and a lot of other Secret Chiefs 3 related shows, notably frontman Trey Spruance playing the following day (10/12), Harvester (aka Nate Wooley, C. Spencer Yeh, and Ryan Sawyer) on October 14, BloodMist (whose lineup includes Toby Driver) on October 16, John Zorn's annual Halloween Improv NIght (10/31), and many others.

Toby Driver of Vaura/Kayo Dot

WIERD will host a special Vaura appearance at their weekly party at Home Sweet Home tonight (7/25) (131 Chrystie St in Manhattan). The band will strip down to play a rare "acoustic variations" set at the venue, which will see the band unplug for the second time in their history (the first being at The Stone earlier this year). Flyer for the show is below.
Kevin Hufnagel of Vaura/Gorguts played a solo set Saint Vitus on 7/21. If you missed them, the pictures are here.
Also-Vaura member Toby Driver played Bowery Electric on July 19th with his Kayo Dot project, with support from Triple Cobra and The Big Con. Pictures from that show, the Kayo Dot setlist, and a flyer for tonight, below...

Seattle doom crew Samothrace's last LP was nothing short of amazing, and now the band is perparing their new LP for release on 20 Buck Spin. Look for Reverence to Stone on July 31st via the label, and check out the art above.
Xibalba's last LP (that we streamed in full) was the kind of raw-beatdown style hardcore that I could get with. Primal, thick guitar-tone sets this band apart from the pack of current modern hardcore bands, and now you can hear their latest track "Sentenced" from their forthcoming Hasta La Muerte via Pitchfork.
Kayo Dot will hit the road for a short tour in mid-July, including two NYC shows at St. Vitus on 7/11 with Mossenek and MV Carbon (tickets) and Bowery Electric on 7/19 with Triple Cobra & Big Con. Full tour schedule is below.
Bosse De Nage specialize in eclectic black metal and will release their new LP III via Profound Lore next week! Stream the new song "The Arborist" below and order your copy via the label. Their last LP (which we streamed in full) was one of my favorites of last year.
Profound Lore is also preparing to release the new LP by The Howling Wind, featuring Ryan of Unearthly Trance (who played all of In The Red at Acheron this week) and Tim of Aldebaran (who released their new LP recently). Stream a new song from Of Babylon below.
All suggested shows, video from last night's Dragged into Sunlight show, and more is below. Who will I see at the BV-BBG/Brutal Panda show with Harkonen tonight?

Liturgy at Webster Hall in February (more by Amanda Hatfield)

If you've noticed a handful of interesting shows at The Stone happening next week, like the acoustic Vaura show (4/20) or the Amen Dunes and Guardian Alien show (4/17), they're part of Chippy Fest, which goes down at John Zorn's non-profit venue from April 17-22, and was curated by John Zorn's exclusive designer Heung-Heung Chin (aka Chippy)
On April 21, the night after Vaura plays, Toby Driver (who is a member of Vaura and also fronts Kayo Dot/maudlin of the Well) will present the world premiere of his new trio, Ichneumonidae, which includes violinist Timba Harris (of Secret Cheifs 3) and Michelle Morinaga. That same night, Toby also plays as a member of Stern with Chuck Stern, Keith Abrams, and Tim Byrnes.
As mentioned, Kayo Dot, Vaura, and Dysrhythmia share a bill at DBA on 4/28.
Other 'Chippy Fest' shows include Mick Barr (of Krallice), Hunter Hunt-Hendrix (of Liturgy), and Nymph on Wednesday (4/18) and Miho Hatori (with Ahmed Gallab of Yeasayer), Timo Ellis, and Unstoppable Death Machines on Thursday (4/19). The Stone's full calendar is here.
Speaking of Mick Barr, his music and William Brittelle's music will be performed by ACME: American Contemporary Music Ensemble on May 11 at 12 at The Kitchen. ACME players for this concert are Caleb Burhans (violin, banjo, and voice), Clarice Jensen (cello), Eric Lamb (flute), Megan Levin (harp), Caroline Shaw (violin), Nadia Sirota (viola) and Chris Thompson (percussion). Tickets are on sale now.
Speaking of Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, he kicks off a residency at Issue Project Room on Saturday (4/14) with Liturgy bandmate Bernhard Gann. The show is free but "sold out". Other dates in the "3-month residency" have not been announced yet but presumably will be soon.
Meanwhile, Hunter's ex-bandmate Greg Fox's Guardian Alien project (who also plays The Stone next week) plays Death by Audio TONIGHT (4/13) with Black Pus (of Lightning Bolt), Mounds, Buck Gooter, and Alien Whale. Guardian Alein will return to DBA on 5/11 with DJ Dog Dick and 2 Ton Bug.

Kevin Hufnagel on stage with Vaura (more by Greg Cristman)

Vaura are back from a successful round of dates with Alcest that kicked off with a sold-out show at Public Assembly (pics). The band's well-received Selenelion is out and making noise, spawning a pair of video treatments including "Drachma" and "Obsidian Damascene Sun", the latter of which comes courtesy of Terrence Hannum (Locrian) and makes its world premiere here today. Check that out below.
If you haven't seen Vaura, you have two vastly different chances to do so in the coming weeks. Next week Vaura will play a special acoustic set at The Stone (on 4/20 with a Kevin Hufnagel acoustic set right before it!) followed by a show the nest week at Death By Audio on 4/28 where the band will enlist their other projects Dysrhythmia and Kayo Dot for the show (yes, their family).
Check out both Vaura videos, including the Terrence Hannum (Locrian) produced "Obsidian Damascene Sun" below...

A Storm of Light at the Tone Deaf showcase (more by Greg Cristman)

A Storm of Light plays NYC TONIGHT as part of a round of dates with Mustard Gas & Roses (mem Isis) and Magic Circle. Tickets are still available for the Saint Vitus show. The band recently played a round of dates surrounding SXSW including the Tone Deaf showcase (pictures). Tonight's show is in direct competition with Hull, Mutilation Rites, Batillus and Trenchgrinder at Acheron, the latter two of which played Lovejoy's as part of the BV Day Party. Hull also played Red 7 with Fear on 3/15, which was down the street from Pallbearer, Screaming Females, Ringworm & Power Trip (pictures).
Punk rock crew Kim Phuc will team with Family Curse and Herzog Rising to play Death By Audio on April 7th. The show is one of a few notable and recently added shows at the space, including April 14th with White Suns (who have a new LP on Load, stream a song below), Pop 1280, and Richard, April 28th with Dysrhythmia, Kayo Dot & Vaura, and 4/29 with a mystery guest, Child Abuse, Behold...The Arctopus and PAK.
Check out the recent Decibel Flexi of In Solitude covering Samhain's "Mother of Mercy".
Youth Attack have updated their site with orders for the new Salvation House of the Beating Hell EP, new second Hoax EP, a new ARTS LP Thousand Wounds of War, and so much more. Head to their site for more details (I recommend the Hoax, ARTS and Salvation records).
If you missed it, we posted two sets of pictures from Deatmatch during SXSW (SET 1, SET 2), a set of pictures from Lovejoy's during SXSW, my official showcase during SXSW, and pictures from our bridge show. We welcomed a new EP from Cop Problem, interviews with Black God, new shows from Ilsa, Rorschach, Old Man Gloom, D-Clone, Young Widows, Autopsy and more. Got stoked and then immediately diappointed with the Kiss it Goodbye reunion and scratched our heads in disbelief at the "Death to All" reunion and Wolvhammer cover of The Cure (the latter in a positive way).
More suggested shows, a stream of a new Horseback song, the Split Cranium LP (with Aaron of Isis and members of Circle) a 16 song, an Author & Punisher song, a White Suns song and more is below. What did I miss?

Carissa's Weird @ Neumo's in Seattle on 9/24 (by joshc)

Many believed [their 2003 breakup] was the end for Carissa's Wierd, but last year, the band got back together for a one-off reunion show in Seattle, and last month, they released a new single entitled Tucson. Now the band [played] their first non-Seattle gig in more than 8 years at Kimmel's E&L Auditorium this [past] Monday. For a very small group of people, this show is the equivalent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's five-day stand in NYC last spring. How was last night's Carissa's Wierd show? S plays Bruar Falls tonight (10/11).The Program Board's New Music Chair, Nicole Cobb, who was responsible for booking Carissa's Wierd, explained that she had been in touch with Jen Ghetto, one of the band's two vocalists, to try and book her new project S. "I asked about the possibility of getting Carissa's Wierd to play. I knew it was a long shot, but I had to ask. At first, she said that it probably wasn't possible, but this July, she let me know that it could be a possibility, and at that point, I did everything in my power to make this show happen."
To round out the bill, Cobb booked Kayo Dot and Arms & Sleepers. "I think they both bring interesting things to the show. Kayo Dot, similarly to Carissa's Wierd has a really strong underground following. Not a lot of people know their name, but those who know them tend to love them," she explained.
A video from the above-pictured Seattle show below...

The previously-announced Carissa's Wierd reunion show happens in NYC tonight (10/10). Here are the final details:

Fuck The Facts at Cake Shop (more by BBG)

Fuck The Facts will return to Cake Shop on March 12th as part of a special round of new dates:
We've put together a special set for these shows that will have us playing songs from every album since 2001's 'Mullet Fever' all the way to new music from our upcoming 'Die Miserable' album, and all in chronological order from oldest to newest. Many of these songs we haven't played live in years and most likely won't after this, so we hope you'll enjoy this little blast into the past.Expect the nasty little canucks to fuck shit up at Cake Shop. Can't wait for Die Miserable.
Supporting the incredible FTF will be the always unfucwitable hard-grinders Psychic Limb, Radiation Blackbody (Joel/Josh of Defeatist), and Icelandic hardcore/screamo Swords of Chaos (mems of Jonsi's band, seriously).

Marc Bourgon teamed up with Steve Vargas of The Great Sabatini to record a new side project Greber. It's a little bit more in the hardcore vein (but still rules), and you can stream all of that EP below, and then pick up a copy and/or a t-shirt at their merch site.
Speaking of Joel from Defeatist, he'll debut his new band Praetura at Acheron on 2/5. The show will also feature The Osedax (ex-Psyopus), Backslider, and Misanthropic Noise. Defeatist will also play 5/22 at The Charleston with Internal Rot and Doubled Over.

Kayo Dot at The Stone (more by Paul Birman)

Kayo Dot just celebrated Coyote, and will now show off their new baby Stained Glass (due this fall via Hydra Head) at a show at Bowery Electric TUESDAY (8/24) with Cleric and Bad Girlfriend (who will also play Union Pool with Hallux). The avant garde team will play a pair of sets at Bowery Electric, the second being "an exposé on the bass guitar sound used in Coyote".
For Kayo Dot honcho Toby Driver, the show means two in three days as he played Zebulon last night with as part of Tartar Lamb alongside Seaven Teares (Charlie Looker's new project), and mezzo-soprano Amirtha Kidambi/percussionist Cory Bracken (who performed works by John Cage, Larry Polansky, Morton Feldman and many others). Tartar Lamb recently kickstarted their campaign to record a follow-up to 2006's 60 Metonymies.
Meanwhile, last night at Bruar Falls, Kevin Hufnagel (Gorguts, Dysrhythmia) played a solo show with Religious To Damn (mem A Storm of Light), Fielded, and Psychic Steel. Both Fielded (the solo project of Lindsay Powell of Ga'an/Festival) and Psychic Steel are currently on the road and will loop through Death By Audio TONIGHT to team up with Lichens and Driphouse. Fielded will release Terrageist, the new LP due on September 7th via Catholic Tapes. Dig on "Another Time" above and check out the video/stream some more material below.
Lichens recently supported Hallogallo at Maxwell's, will support Sleep in Chicago (with Ga'an) and is also scheduled to play the now sold-out Sleep show at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on 9/8. Kayo Dot at The Stone (more by Paul Birman)

If you missed Kayo Dot in early February when they performed all of Coyote (as well as Choirs Of The Eye) as part of a Toby Driver -curated month at The Stone, clear your sked on Sunday (4/11). The avant-garde NYC band will celebrate the release of the new LP by performing Coyote in it's entirety at Union Pool with support from the Bauder Evans Wooley Cymerman Amplified Quartet and Kevin Hufnagel (Dysrhythmia). Advance tickets are up. The date is part of a weekend of Kayo Dot shows that include Blot Spot on 4/10 in Binghamton, NY and 4/12 at SUNY Purchase.
Just ten days later (4/21) Union Pool will host another notable avant-garde artist, the second date for Jarboe in NYC (the first is at Lit Lounge two days earlier). Tickets are on sale.
Kevin Hufnagel also plays in another band that has an NYC date... Gorguts! Gorguts will take on Knitting Factory with Krallice, Bloody Panda and Portal as part of a BV/Blackened Music production on 5/26 at The Knit. Tickets are still available.
words by BBG, photos by Paul Birman

Toby Driver kicked off the first Saturday (2/6) of his month as curator at The Stone by inviting his own band, Kayo Dot, to play a pair of sets, both full album shows. The 8PM sett featured Choirs Of The Eye while the later show was their new baby, Coyote. Greg Massi (Baliset) was part of the band and reports:
I am choosing to talk about this because it had a profound effect on me. It was inpsiring to say the least. I got to hear the new KD album in full performed live and during the performance I had visions of creativity and sparks flying into my brain to help me write for the next Baliset album. The month at The Stone continues with Gnaw, Steeve Hurdle (Gorguts) this weekend, with appearances by Kevin Hufnagel (Dysrhythmia), Yoshiko Ohara (Bloody Panda), and Thrones into the week. And it also was weird because i felt alot like Captain Jack Harkness at the end of Doctor Who season 3. You are teased into believing that he might rejoin the Doctor for adventures but in the end he tells the Doctor that he has his own team now and they need him and that summed up my feelings on Baliset. They are my team now and I feel more comfortable musically with them than anyone else I have ever played with and while it was fun living the fantasy life of being in Kayo Dot complete with a sold out crowd and exhuberant fans shaking your hand and making you feel larger than life, I missed my team.
I am happy with the success we have built for ourselves and if i took one thing away from this whole experience, it is that it gave me a focus point in my head for the next album.
But Toby and the rest of KD know they can call on me for help at any time and as a friend I will help them with whatever they need but as I return to my life of anonymity once again, I do get excited for working on where Baliset my new team is going.
The Thrones date at The Stone happens one day after a newly announced show with Thrones and Carla Bozulich at Ash's Place (on 2/18 at N4th and Wythe).

* Toby Driver photo by Gemma Fleming
Toby Driver is an "other". Not like Benjamin Linus or one of the Dharma Initiative, but in that his artistic endeavors Kayo Dot and Maudlin of The Well exist in the in-between, and outside. Driver's current project, Kayo Dot, is prepping to release their fourth album Coyote via Hydra Head on April 6th. On Coyote, elements of goth, avant-jazz, prog, ambient, and the kitchen sink meld with the avant-garde, making for an intensely fascinating and eclectic listen.
Driver was recently asked to curate the month of February at The Stone, John Zorn's non-profit club in the East Village. We sat down to ask Driver about some of the bands he chose which include solo sets from members of Krallice, Dysrhythmia, Extra Life, and Bloody Panda in addition to Baby Dee, Oxbow, Gnaw, and a full performance by his own band doing Coyote from start to finish, and the recent resurrection of Maudlin of The Well.

Javelina @ the Northside BV-BBG Showcase (more by Jason Walker)

Alright! I get it. Doomriders rules. Revocation is up there. There's a new Converge and Baroness on the way. But even with all of those great releases, it suprises me that Javelina isn't near some of the top of those lists. The band's filthy debut was a monster and their new one, Beasts Among Sheep, only adds to their considerable reputation. If you are a fan of the last LP, this one is a must have. Dig on "Stepchild" above and preorder the limited edition LP version of Javelina's Beasts Among Sheep via Brutal Panda Records and the CD version via Translation Loss.
Speaking of that Doomriders album, Darkness Come Alive is out NOW via Deathwish Records. Though the party vibe that permeated through Black Thunder is mostly gone, it has been replaced by a propulsive punk rock fury and, at times, a Misfits-era Danzig croon (see "Come Alive")! There are quite a few killer moments on this long-player, but we present to you the most "fuck you" of them all, the galloping "Lions" downloadable above!
In our last round up, we shined a light on into the deepest fathoms of Australia and the truly frightening Portal. The band's claustrophobic and positively frightening new death metal LP, Swarth, relies as much on freak-out atmosphere as it does killer discordant riffery. Swarth is due out on 10/20 via Profound Lore and we have a second taste in the form of "Omenknow" above.
Misery Index have completed four new songs and are looking to enter the studio in early 2010 to record their follow up to Traitors! Stoked.
Iron Age @ Cake Shop (more by Jason Walker)

I still remember that kick ass Cake Shop show with Iron Age, Mind Eraser, and Sex Vid, and walking out of that show wanting more. Thankfully, I can add to those great memories with a PAIR of Iron Age shows in the coming weeks! First up, the rowdy Texans will team up with the great Mother of Mercy (profiled here) for a show at Cake Shop (10/16). The next day (10/17), look for the band to pull a double header with a day show at Generation Records and a night show at The Charleston with Brain Killer, Naam & Descender. Speaking of Mind Eraser, the band will team up with the kick ass Iron Lung for a string of east coast dates which will include Cake Shop on 11/8! Full Iron Age and Iron Lung dates are below.
Black Skies will release the limited edition vinyl from their 2008 EP Hexagon on I'm Better Than Everyone Else Records. The Chapel Hill doom trio is currently on the hunt for drummer #5, but not before blessing us with some seriously killer riffage in the form of "Smoke & Mirrors" above. Preorder Hexagon here.
Power Pellut is also releasing their debut LP via I'm Better than Everyone Else Records. Preorder that here and dig on "Black Betty" from that LP above!
Church of Misery will release a live record culled from their recent set at Roadburn 2009! More details are to come, but look for Burning World to do the honors in November/December of this year. In the meantime, dig on this killer live video from Roadburn 2009!
That video, news on Kowloon Walled City, Boris, Asphyx, Struck By Lightning, Ringworm, Repulsion and more!

YOB Live (hevisto)

Out this week, the return of the mighty YOB with their absolutely colossal new album The Great Cessation. If you were a fan of masterful, thundering, sickening doom or the previous material by YOB or Middian/Age Eternal, this album is HIGHLY recommended... possibly their best LP yet? The Great Cessation is currently on sale at the Profound Lore, and the band recently was interviewed by Hellbound.
The brutal band with the awesome name, Weekend Nachos, are hitting the road at the end of August and into September bludgeoning the Northeast with dates including Rockstar Bar on Sept 4th! The band is currently supporting their new LP Unforgivable out now at your favorite distro or via the band. Check out "A Few Blocks South" from Unforgivable and make sure and get out to Rockstar Bar on 9/4, if you ain't chicken.

Out now via 20 Buck Spin, the collaborative LP between Nadja & Black Boned Angel. Black Boned Angel is probably best known as the alter-ego of Campbell Kneale of Birchville Cat Motel, who collaborated with Nadja over 2+ years to create the three tracks which formed this LP, as well as the Christ Send Light EP. The graphic artwork is very indicative of the collaborative spirit of the LP as well, as it is also a collaboration between revered artists Stephen Kasner and David D'Andrea. Check out a snippet of one of the tracks on the LP above. Also out now, BBA's new LP Verdun available via Riot Season.
Union Pool has gone metal! Besides the previously mentioned Dysrhythmia show and the Hull / Giant Squid / Grayceon shindig, the venue has also lined up a few other notable shows in the coming months including the mighty Atomic Bitchwax on August 1, f'n Cable on August 15th (3 days before the release of The Failed Convict), and finally Neurot signees It's Casual on August 23rd. Full Cable tour dates are below. Stream the new Dysrhythmia album, Psychic Maps, here.
Baroness have completed work on their new album due in October via Relapse Records!
Burnt By the Sun are preparing their FINAL album for release, Heart Of Darkness due on August 18th via Relapse Records. Check out "Inner Station" available for download above, which is also on the Relapse Contamination 2009 comp available for $5.99 on iTunes. The band has scheduled a gang of Euro-dates, but none in the US so far... although with Dave Witte gearing up to release Municipal Waste's Massive Aggressive, I'm guessing it might be a while.
Check out a video interview with Municipal Waste, live video of Saint Vitus, as well as a new project featuring Chris Colohan of Cursed, Pentagram, Burzum, 3 Inches Of Blood, Kayo Dot, and much more as This Week In Metal Continues...

Three dudes with ridiculously bad wedgies

When you call your tour the 'Champions of Sound', you better be either a travelling reggae showcase or ready to ante the f up. Hopefully Pelican, Kayo Dot, and Stove Bredsky (aka Stephen Brodsky of Cave In) are up to the challenge when this eclectic tour of Hydra Head representatives goes east-coastin' in late October up 'til around Thanksgiving. Zozobra (with Caleb, also of Cave In lineage) are included in the festivities on a few dates. That includes the show at Bowery Ballroom on 11/2. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.
Pelican is gearing up to tour Europe with Torche, and recently dropped a lengthy update including details on their new record.
In related Kayo Dot news, Toby Driver has reformed his former band, Maudlin of The Well after asking for donations to help record unreleased tracks and receiving a big fattie courtesy of one superfan. As a result, the band will hit the studio in Feb of 2009 to record a digital only release. No word on who Maudlin Of The Well is/will be, other than Toby (natch)and Terran Olson. All dates below...
