G-Dep

Just before Christmas 2010, a 36-year-old black man, Trevell Coleman, walks into a police station in Harlem and tells the cops that something's been troubling him. He was involved in a shooting many years ago, sixteen or seventeen years ago, and has information they might want to hear. At first the cops take his name and number, tell him to go home, we'll look into it, but that was a long time ago. They never call.

He goes back into the station a few weeks later. It is really eating him. He tells them he was the shooter. He doesn't know if the guy lived or died, and he needs to know. He wants to tell the whole story. He wants to "make right" with the victim's family. Incredibly, he waives his Miranda rights, does not ask for a lawyer, and begins to confess. -[GQ]

The above quote comes from GQ's Editor in Chief, who served as a foreman for a jury on a murder case for former-Bad Boy Records MC G-Dep. As stated above, G-Dep came into the police station to confess to the 1993 murder and as a result of said confession Trevell Coleman was sentenced to 15 years in prison today.

Coleman, who wrestled with drugs and alcohol in the years following the shooting including during his stint as a Bad Boy artist, is married and currently has three children of school age. He commented to MTV news earlier this month that the guilty verdict "was God's will" and that he wanted "to thank everyone that was involved in the case" and harbored "no ill thoughts towards anybody". Sad story all the way around.

G-Dep released Child of The Ghetto in 2001 spawning the singles "Let's Get It" and "Special Delivery", the latter of which spawned a remix with Ghostface Killah, Keith Murray, Craig Mack, and P. Diddy.

Meanwhile, you can also still head to the Park Slope club for its second-to-last night, one that will be filled with Americana, tonight (2/19).

First up, Curren$y will headline Irving Plaza on June 6th as part of a string of US dates that he has scheduled in May & June (dates are below). Tickets are currently on Live Nation presale, and go on regular sale at 10AM tomorrow (4/6). Curren$y is currently preparing to release his new and entirely Alchemist-produced EP Covert Coup on April 20th and for FREE.

As previously mentioned, Big K.R.I.T. & Freddie Gibbs are on tour and hitting Southpaw later this month.

Raekwon will headline BB King's on April 17th, alongside Ultramagnetic MC's (billed as an exclusive reunion show, I assume that means that Kool Keith is on board much like at ATP New Jersey), MC Eiht, Bushwick Bill (Geto Boys), Chip Fu (Fu-Schnickens), Da Bushbabees, Tanya Morgan, Tony Touch, and many many more including "special invited VIP surprise guests" and the host D-Stroy (Arsonists). Tickets are on sale. The show takes place just four days before Raekwon will team with The Lox, EPMD, Brand Nubian, and Nice and Smooth as part of a Salute to Hip Hop at Best Buy Theater on April 13th. Tickets are still available.

Tanya Morgan has another NYC date too, TONIGHT (4/5) at Southpaw, as the hip hop crew will pair with DJ Neil Armstrong (Jay-Z's touring DJ) for a free, 21+ event.

Speaking of Jay-Z, have you checked out his new "Life and Times" blog? One of his first posts is on Little Dragon.

Keith Murray will similarly team with a gang of 90's hip hop stars at Santos on April 14th. He'll be joined by Lords of the Underground, Group Home, Real Live, Nine, Shabaam Sahdeeq, and DJs Evil D, Eclipse, Kon & Amir, Ralph McDaniels, and many others. Tickets are still available.

Two of the most extreme MCs in hip hop, M.O.P., will hit Southpaw on April 7th with Top $ Raz, Sleepwalkas, and others. Tickets are still available.

Del Thee Funkee Homosapien will hit BB King's on May 1st as part of a round of US dates for the Hiero lynch pin. Tickets are still available. Del will release his new LP Golden Age on April 11th.

Slick Rick is returning to BB King's, as he'll play the venue on May 29th. Tickets are still available.

Talib Kweli will play a FREE show in Red Hook Park on June 21st as part of the City Parks Foundation's Summerstage series. Tons more Summerstage events (and undoubtedly a large number of hip hop ones) are also slated to be announced, we'll keep you informed. Kweli recently played SXSW and released Gutter Rainbows earlier this year.

And last but certainly not least, 9th Wonder and Phonte (aka 2/3 of Little Brother) will join Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg at 92Y Tribeca Wednesday (4/6) night as part of the Noisemakers series, where Rosenberg interviews his guests. Tickets are on sale.

All tour dates and some video is below.

Ft. Greene's own Just Ice
just ice

Since the last time we talked, the Rakim show at Knitting Factory on Dec 19th (Friday) has expanded quite a bit, adding performances by Black Thought of The Roots, (he's) Keith Murray, and the "original gangster of hip hop" Just-Ice. The whole night will be hosted by Sascha Jenkins of ego trip fame and will feature "all vinyl" DJ sets from a sick lineup of DJs including fellow ego trip-per Chairman Mao, along with Dante Ross, Ge-ology, Psycho Les of The Beatnuts, JS-1, Dooley-O, DJ Amir (of the legendary Kon & Amir), J-Zone, Jel, and Thanksgiving Brown. That makes it three nights in a row for Jel & Thanksgiving Brown. Tickets are still available, check out the flyer below.

Kon & Amir dropped their On Track Vol 2 via BBE in June of this year. When they aren't dropping one of their killer mixes, they can be found either at their blog or behind the decks... which is where you'll find them on Jan 16th, 2009 as part of Disco 3000 NYC at APT. Get your dancin' shoes out (sorry to trample 'ya Showtrotta).

In other news related to what some see as "The Golden Age Of Hip Hop", Irving Plaza added a show on Feb 7th, 2009 billed as.... The Golden Age of Hip Hop Pt 1. No word on what part 2 entails, but we do know that Doug E. Fresh, Chubb Rock, Brand Nubian, Positive K (yeah, him), and Lord Finesse will be on hand for part uno. Tickets are on sale. Lord Finesse recently played Knitting Factory as part of DITC.

While we're on the old school tip, LL Cool J announced a show at Nokia on Feb 19th, 2009 as part of his "Pursed Lickable Lips Tour 2009" (ok, I made that up, it's just the one show). Prepare to wade through a sea of ladies with bamboo earrings (at least two pair). Tickets go on Amex presale on 12/18 at noon and regular sale on 12/20 at noon here.

Q-Tip with A Tribe Called Quest at Rock The Bells, 8/3/08 (villageslum.com)
Rock the Bells @ Jones Beack

King Khan pretty much ruled, but maybe, the award for show of the day could go to Rock The Bells at Jones Beach...

"Mos Def was joined by Talib Kweli for a series of Black Star songs including "Definition," "Respiration" and "Brown Skin Lady."......with Pharoahe Monch joining former label-mates on stage for a boisterous performance of "Simon Says."

....Slick Rick joined his Def Jam proteges [ED: Method Man & Redman] briefly for a partial performance of "La Di Da Di,"....... After Raekwon, who performed earlier with Ghostface returned to the stage, EPMD followed, performing "Strictly Business" and "So What Cha Saying." Washington DC's DJ Kool entered the set, performing "Let Me Clear My Throat,"...... Upon the set closing, Keith Murray completed the Def Squad triad with a performance, without Sermon at the time, of "Rapper's Delight."

.....the largest crowd reaction came from Nas speaking to the crowd about how he needs to "breathe." Repeating the word, DJ Green Lantern played the instrumental to "Success," prompting a Yankee-cap tucked low Jay-Z to rush on the stage.... and perform his first verse..... the two then performed "Black Republicans."

.... A Tribe Called Quest headlined the night joined by luminaries such as Busta Rhymes on "Scenario" as well as Consequence.

Other guests.... included DJ Premier, M.O.P., Jeru Da Damaja, Biz Markie, Skyzoo, Mickey Factz and others. "

Zaaaaam. Luckily, we have some photos (courtesy of Village Slum) and a video of that "Black Republicans" performance down below.....
