Heems w/ Das Racist in 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Heems, Zulu P., Girls In Uniform @ Baby's All Right
There's never a lack of chances to catch former Das Racist member Heems in NYC, and especially since there aren't many show options tonight, this could be a good chance.

OFF!, Cerebral Ballzy, NASA Space Universe @ Asbury Lanes
Another thing you could do with not many options in NYC is head to NJ to catch hardcore supergroup OFF! (ex-Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Hot Snakes, Rocket from the Crypt, Redd Kross, etc) whose tour hits Asbury Lanes tonight. They'll be in NYC on Saturday (5/17).

Dirty Fences w/ "Special Surprise Co-Headliner," Hector's Pets, Games @ Grand Victory
It's a night of garage rock at The Grand Victory tonight and a "special surprise guest co-headliner" is promised. Who could it be?

Keren Ann @ Joe's Pub
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Keren Ann was just out on a mini-tour, and tonight she's back in NYC to wrap it up at Joe's Pub.

Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
Wyatt Cenac's weekly Night Train comedy show continues tonight with guests Mike Vecchione, Kara Klenk, Hugh Moore, Calvin Cato and more.

Ira Kaplan w/ YLT at The Bell House in December (more by PSquared)
Ira Kaplan

There technically weren't any Yo La Tengo Hannukah shows last year, but YLT member Ira Kaplan will be taking part in a Passover show in NYC this year. He's one of many names appearing at the annual Downtown Seder at CIty Winery on April 7, a venue that often hosts Jewish events (like the Klezmer brunch). (The actual Passover actually starts a week later.) Front and rear tables are already sold out, but you can still reserve a middle table.

The lineup is very diverse (and not all music), including famous radio/tv sex therapist Dr. Ruth, folk singer Pete Yarrow (of legendary NYC trio Peter Paul and Mary), former baseball player Art Shamsky (Mets, Reds) who is in the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, singer/songwriter Keren Ann who is Israeli (as are performers David Broza and J.Viewz), Basya Schechter (lead singer of NYC's American Jewish world music band Pharaoh's Daughter), City Winery regular David Bromberg, Jewish-themed comedian Jackie Hoffman, Dan Zanes (of the Del Fuegos) and two members of Yiddish theater, Elmore James (not the blues musician) and Zalmen Mlotek.

In related news, Yo La Tengo will appear on Parks & Rec soon.

Ex Hex at BV-SXSW 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Ex Hex

Nothing on a bridge in Austin last week (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Withered Hand

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Pampers, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion @ Union Pool
Pampers full-frontal art-punk has made them one of the best new bands in Brooklyn. Openers "Depends" have been revealed to actually be the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, making for a very hot double bill!

Drive By Truckers, Blitzen Trapper @ Terminal 5
Good time party twangers Drive by Truckers just released their new album, English Oceans, and their tour in support of it pulls into NYC tonight. It's a good double-bill with Portland Oregon's Blitzen Trapper opening. Tickets are still available.

Ex Hex, EULA, Household @ Glasslands
Ex Hex is the newest project of Mary Timony (Wild Flag, Helium, Autoclave), and from seeing them at SXSW and CMJ, it sounds like Mary is still churning out great songs over 20 years into her career. This is their first of two NYC shows this week, and good openers tonight too.

Nothing, Sannhet, Dark Blue, York Factory Complaint @ Saint Vitus
Heavy shoegazers Nothing put on some of the best sets we saw at SXSW, and now that we're back in NYC, we're more than happy to get a chance to see them again. Great openers too: consistently solid local post-metal band Sannhet, new-ish Philly trio Dark Blue (with members of Clockcleaner, Paint It Black and Purling Hiss), and the industrial noise of York Factory Complaint. Sold out.

'Chickfactor 22' w/ Withered Hand, Jim Ruiz Set, Lilys, Amor de Dias @ The Bell House
The good folks at Chickfactor throw another birthday party at the Bell House, with lots of hand-picked bands both old and new. Tonight's the only NYC appearance of Scotland's  Withered Hand (with King Creosote joining him); , and a rare appearance from Jim Ruiz Set (who are moving to Hamburg, see 'em while you can); veteran indie rock chameleons Lilys; and Clientele/Pipas offshoot Amor de Dias.

The War On Drugs, White Laces, Lantern @ Bowery Ballroom
The War on Drugs sound better than ever on their new album, Lost in the Dream, which takes the sound they honed on 2011's Slave Ambient and expands on it. Tonight they're on night 2 of their sold-out 3-night run in NYC.

Vaadat Charigim, Palm, Yonatan Gat (of Monotonix), Exocomets @ Death By Audio
How often do you get to say, "I'm gonna go see this Israeli shoegaze band"? Tonight, with Vaadat Charigim, you can do that. Plus: they're really good.

Excepter, Mirror Mirror Esque NT, O Paradiso, Brother Bruno (DJ Set) @ Radio Bushwick
It's a night of avant and arty sounds, headlined by Brooklyn collective Excepter.

The xx @ Park Avenue Armory
The xx continue their run of 25 shows at the Park Avenue Armory which goes through March 29. Each show is extremely intimate (holds 40 people) and very sold out.

Painted BLACK Act III: Ryan Hemsworth, ASTR, Glass Gang @ Irving Plaza
It's the third of three shows in the Painted BLACK series at Irving Plaza, and tonight's will get dancey with cloud rap/pop producer Ryan Hemsworth, synth pop duo ASTR and more synth pop from Glass Gang.

Keren Ann @ City Winery
Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Keren Ann has been busy lately being a new mom, but is about get back into the music side of her life.  No word on a new album, but maybe she'll play some new songs tonight.

Wild Ones, My Body @ Baby's All Right
Portland's Wild Ones are signed to Topshelf, but unlike many of their labelmates, they make synthy dream pop. They'll be supporting Typhoon on tour soon, but tonight you can catch them headlining a show in NYC at Baby's All Right.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.

Pig Destroyer at Gwar-B-Q 2013 (more by Josh Sisk)
Pig Destroyer

Versus at Chickfactor 20 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...

Pig Destroyer, Dysrhythmia, Trenchgrinder, Mother Brain @ Saint Vitus
Pig Destroyer fully deserve their reputation as modern grindcore's most vital band; this show will mark their first NYC appearance with new (and first-ever!) bassist Scott Jarvis in the lineup. They're headlining tonight's BV/Invisible Oranges-curated Red Bull Sound Select show which is an all-around killer bill. If you RSVP'd, it's $3 at the door, if not it's $10. First-come, first-served. Doors are at 6 PM. Get there early. Oh, and Dave Hill is hosting too!

Versus, pow wow!, Crazy Pills, Quiet Loudly, The Planes, Let's Be Loveless @ Shea Stadium
This is a benefit for the Philippines which is still recovering from devastating Typhoon Haiyan. Most of the bands on this bill have some ties to the country, and this is Versus' first local show in a long while.

Lee Ranaldo and The Dust, Steve Gunn, Spectre Folk @ The Bell House
With Sonic Youth behind him, Lee Ranaldo (and his SY bandmate Steve Shelley) have moved into poppier territories with their new project, which can recall everything from melodic indie rock to '70s art rock. Tonight's openers are both good too: Steve Gunn of Kurt Vile's band and Spectre Folk who also count Steve Shelley as a member.

Laurel Halo, Autre Ne Veut, Maxmillion Dunbar, Ital, Bookworms, Special Guests @ 285 Kent
Brooklyn DIY venue 285 Kent is sadly closing, but before it's done for good, there's four more epic shows going down in the Williamsburg space this month. Tonight's the first of those, leaning mostly towards electronic music and R&B. Any guesses on who the special guests will be?

Action Bronson @ Irving Plaza
The insanely prolific and always great NYC rapper Action Bronson deservedly continues to get bigger, and this week he'll show that off with two big sold-out hometown shows. This is the second.

Imperial Teen, Dot Wiggin Band, ARP, Juan Wauters @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
The folks at Panache Booking are behind this weekend's shows at BNB, and they've put together two good line-ups. Tonight it's Roddy Bottum's Imperial Teen, former Shaggs singer Dot Wiggin, and more. FREE.

Omar-S, FIT, DKDS @ 88 Palace
Omar-S had one of the better (but often overlooked) house records of 2013 with Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself, an album that eschewed the big hooks of some of the other big house albums of 2013 but focused on masterful production.

Cloud Control, Avers @ Baby's All Right
Australian guitar pop combo Cloud Control have foolishly left the part of the world where it's summer right now to experience the polar vortex and to play some of their catchy anthemic pop for the cold people of NYC.

Martha Vineyard Ferries, Brian Chase & Robbie Lee Duo, Tim Foljhan @ Death by Audio
MVF are and indie rock "supergroup" made up of Elisha Wiesner (Kahoots), Bob Weston (Shellac, Volcano Suns, Mission of Burma), and Chris Brokaw (Come, Codeine, The New Year), released their first full length, Mass. Grave, this past October.

Lewis Black, Gilbert Gottfried , Liam McEneaney @ Fontana's
This is a live taping of Liam McEneaney's "Tell Your Friends! The Podcast!" podcast and tonight features to very angry men.

Chris & Cosey, Excepter @ Santos Party House
When industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle shut down operations in 1981, Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti kept working together, making icy, trance-like dance music with occasional forays into pop. Having just played MoMA PS1, Carter Tutti perform Chris & Cosey material tonight. Sold out, but they're playing Radio Bushwick on Sunday.

Golden Suits, Inlets @ Union Hall
Fred Nicolaus is one half of Department of Eagles (the other half being Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen) and on his own he makes similarly quirky folk-pop as Golden Suits.

Krill, Palehound, Bueno, Jazz Massagers, Hannah Ch'oe @ Silent Barn
Krill mix Spencer Krug/Isaac Brock-style eccentricities with '90s-style loud rock and their Exploding In Sound labelmates Palehound offer a noisy take on singer/songwriter indie rock.

Clutch, The Sword, Crobot @ Capitol Theatre
Between Clutch and The Sword, there will be no lack of big rock riffs filling Port Chester's Capitol Theatre tonight.

Diane Coffee, White Hinterland, Isadora @ Glasslands
When Shaun Fleming isn't drumming in Foxygen, he's making a similar type of psych pop in his other band, Diane Coffee, who play NYC again tonight.

Rahaan, Free Magic, Faso @ Glasslands
Chicago's Rahaan comes to NYC for tonight's DISCOVERY party. According to his bio, he "has been dropping disco and funky house beats to retro music heads since the 80's when he and his friends use to dance at the best house parties in Chicago - Rahaan's home state and most importantly, the place which gave birth to House music."

The Impressions featuring members of the Dap-Kings, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, The Inspirational Voices of the Abyssinian Baptist Church @ Plymouth Church
Tonight Plymouth Church (57 Orange St in Brooklyn Heights) hosts a benefit concert for Free the Slaves, which "works on the ground with liberators around the world doing what it takes to free men, women and children and help them stay free." It's a great lineup (for a great cause) including Chicago soul legends The Impressions, who will be joined by members of Sharon Jones' band The Dap-Kings, and The Dap-Kings' Daptone labelmates Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens.

Federico Aubele, Keren Ann, Dom La Nena @ Joe's Pub
It's a pretty good lineup of singer/songwriters at Joe's Pub tonight with Federico Aubele, Keren Ann, and the National-covering Dom La Nena.

Winter Jazz Fest (multiple shows/venues)
Winter Jazz Fest continues tonight with multiple shows in various NYC venues with sets from John Zorn, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Slavic Soul Party, Erik Friedlander, Sylvie Courvoisier, Elliott Sharp, Mother Falcon, and many more. Full schedule here.

"How to Record Live Instruments" workshop w/ Benjamin Weinman & Billy Rymer of the Dillinger Escape Plan @ Converse Rubber Tracks
It's the third weekend of free (if you registered) creative workshops at Converse Rubber Tracks. Tonight's has two members of The Dillinger Escape Plan teaching you how to record live instruments.

Love Supreme, Truthers, Future Punx, Kissing is a Crime @ Cheap Storage
Garagey soul act Love Supreme headline this party which has been dubbed the "New Year's Eve Do-Over." This time maybe not so many mezcal shots. As for the rest of the line-up, we like jittery new wave lovers Future Punx, especially.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our full NYC show calendar.

Jacco Gardner @ Mercury Lounge in March (more by PSquared Photography)

One of the best parts about CMJ is the day shows that are often free and give you a chance to see live music and grab a bev on your lunch break (or call in sick). To give you a chance to plan your early afternoon ahead of time, we're giving you tomorrow's (Thursday's) daytime picks today (Wednesday). You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all shows, and here are some highlights...

The Bots, TV Girl, Gems, The Preatures, Wild Club, Holychild, The Everywheres, School of Night, J Fernandez, The Range @ Pianos
Fellow music blog I Guess I'm Floating is back with its Floatingfest CMJ party on both floors of Pianos. A good chance to check out Australian CMJ buzz-band The Preatures and LA's TV Girl (one of our CMJ picks).

Satellite, The Darcys, Keren Ann, Mood Rings, Kan Wakan @ Ace Hotel (FREE)
If you like your day parties somewhere a bit fancier, you can catch Atlanta's atmospheric Mood Rings, Canadians The Darcys, Keren Ann and more for free in the lobby of the posh Ace Hotel. Music starts early here (11 AM).

Caged Animals, Echo Friendly, School of Night, Julia Weldon, Bent Shapes, The Moondoggies, J Fernandez, Slow Down Molasses @ Cake Shop (FREE)
This is NYC Taper's annual day party and he's always got a lot of good bands playing, including Boston's Bent Shapes and locals Caged Animals. Can't make the show? He'll have downloadable recordings sometime after.

Ski Lodge, Au Revoir Simone, Saint Rich, Wild Club @ Judson Memorial Church (FREE)
Broadcasting from Judson Memorial Church (part of CMJ Fest HQ), KEXP brings in some of the week's biggest bands for live on-air performances that you can attend too.

Half Moon Run, Ghost Wave, Traumahelikopter, Birth of Joy, Prata Vetra, Instrumenti @ Knitting Factory (FREE)
Filter Magazine brings its Culture Collide festival to NYC in day party form with a pretty good line-up, including Montreal's Half Moon Run and New Zealand's Ghost Wave who are better than their name may have led to to believe.

Jacco Gardner, Ghost Wave, Tweens, Doug Keith, Casual Sex, John Murry, Ski Lodge @ Mission Sound Recording (FREE)
This is a pretty killer line-up, playing at Williamsburg recording studio Mission Sound Recording. Jacco Gardner and Tweens both made our list of 30 Artists to Check Out and we dig Ski Lodge and Ghost Wave as well.

Ratking, Ava Luna, Jamaican Queens, Krill, Calvin Love, Crispy Hexx, Young Oprah Winfrey @ Muchmore's (FREE)
This free My Social List day party features indie rappers Ratking, funk-punk collective Ava Luna, nasally indie rockers Krill, lo-fi pop dude Calvin Love and more. Noon-6.

Kirin J Callinan, TOPS, Pegasus Warning, Shy Hunters, Weeknight @ Bowery Electric ($5)
Sam Mickens is throwing this $5 day party at Bowery Electric (or free with CMJ badge), that's being headlined at 5 PM by crazy weird one-man band Kirin J Callinan, who is sure to put the "party" in "day party." Arbutus-signed Montreal band TOPS is on right before him at 4:15 and they're worth catching too.

Psychic Twin, Diamond Bones, Manicanparty, Palehound, Dark North, Clementine and the Galaxy, And the Kids
The band we most want to see at this one is Palehound, who is about to release her Bent Nail EP (stream it on Stereogum) on Exploding In Sound Records (the former home of her friends Speedy Ortiz). It's an excellent EP, pulling equally from quiet anti-folk and abrasive noise rock. She's on at 4 PM.

Bill Callahan @ MHOW in July (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Bill Callahan

Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook returns to the elegant Allen Room in January for its fourteenth season celebrating the diversity of American popular song. For 16 nights the series will explore the best of the golden age of musical standards through to today's most dynamic songwriting. The music of Broadway, Latin culture and hip-hop, bluegrass, rock, and pop will be presented, along with three evenings devoted to great American composers and lyricists. The 2012 season - January 11 through February 11 - will bring to the stage some of today's most gifted interpreters of song, including Tony Award winners Laura Benanti, Michael Cerveris, and LaChanze, as well as the "Queen of British Musicals," the great Elaine Paige. In keeping with American Songbook's tradition of honoring great composers and lyricists, those being celebrated this season are William Finn (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Falsettos), folk icon Woody Guthrie, and Jule Styne (Gypsy, Funny Girl). A relatively new composer on the scene, multiple Tony-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights) will open the series with a new rap composition about Alexander Hamilton. Also performing in the rap/hip- hop vein is the exciting ensemble Ozomatli.

From the rock canon will be J.D. Souther, performing songs he wrote for Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles as well as newer compositions, guitar god Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth doing an acoustic set, and the wildly expressive Merrill Garbus, known as tUnE-yArDs.

Singer/songwriters, both emerging and veteran, are part of American Songbook as well. Diva of the demi-monde Keren Ann is part of the series, as is the man whose deep voice and masculine presence has earned him the nickname "The John Wayne of Indie Rock," Bill Callahan.

The spectacular Allen Room is located in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center on Broadway at 60th Street. The Allen Room possesses one of New York's greatest settings - a stunning vista of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline that provides an evocative backdrop for the performers.

TICKETS can be purchased online beginning November 14, 2011 at Lincoln Center's website www.AmericanSongbook.org, via CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, at the Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall Box Office, or at the Frederick P. Rose Hall Box Office. Tickets for the Friends of Lincoln Center go on sale November 3, and single tickets go on sale to the public beginning November 14.
The full schedule is at Lincoln Center's site and below...

Chris Garneau opens the previously discussed Keren Ann tour which starts at The Bell House in Brooklyn tonight (6/7) and also hits Bowery Ballroom tomorrow (6/8). Advanced tickets for the Bowery show are still available. Bell House tickets can be purchased tonight at the door.

Chris hasn't released anything since his 2009 album on Absolutely Kosher, but Keren is out supporting her new album "101" which is out now...

"Last time around, [Keren Ann] risked fading into the ranks of female singer-songwriters; the album was strong but preferred to beguile with delicate arrangements and her tremulous voice. On 101, she finds a new niche. In many ways, the album's a counterpart to John Grant's Queen of Denmark, sharing its grounding in sturdy 70s pop-rock production and familiar melodies, and in the sense of humour that made Grant's opus seem such an anachronism. Neither record's particularly fashionable, but each is timeless, even classic. Basically, there's a lot of Fleetwood Mac in there." [BBC]

"In 45 minutes the show with Showalter starts! It's gonna be amazing, I can tell by his purple sweater. Color of royalty. He's feelin' it!" - Neko Case

Neko Case

Neko Case helped Michael Showalter promote his new book at an event at Barnes & Noble in Union Square last night (2/24), or to be more specific, Upstairs at the Square. Katherine Lanpher hosted. Neko sang four songs (setlist below). Showalter read a couple passages including a beat poetry inspired poem and a chapter about what to put in a Hollywood script. He also discussed the orgin of The Baxter, and they both talked about their writing process. Pictures from the bookstore are in this post.

Uptairs at the Square returns to Barnes & Noble in Union Square twice in March. Wednesday, March 9 will feature Rebecca Skloot (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks) and Cubic Zirconia (Follow Your Heart), and Thursday, March 24 has my favorite Keren Ann (101) with Barbara Browning (The Correspondence Artist).

Audience members included Eugene Mirman (who will again join Michael at the Bell House this weekend) and Todd Barry (who just announced an April tour with Neil Hamburger - dates below) (not to be confused with Neil's February and March tour).

Earlier in the day Neko "leaked" a new Dodos song via her Twitter. She wrote, "Fave song off new Dodos. Bummed I didn't didn't get to sing on it (I shouldn't be so greedy cuz I did sing on lots)." Download that above. The Dodos are heading out on tour in March and they'll be playing lots of SXSW shows in the process. Their updated dates, a BrooklynVegan day party included, are below.

Michael Showalter is also touring, though he won't be at SXSW. Neko Case is not touring, though she did just play a show at the Bell House and is giving away her car.

More B&N pictures, Dodos & Barry dates, and Neko's setlist, below...

Keren Ann at The Bell House - 12/10/10 (photo by Eloy Anzola)
Keren Ann

Invoking a certain 1960s Parisian look, Keren Ann took the stage dressed in all black, sporting a fresh bob hairstyle. Backed with a trumpet, drums, and guitar, Ann stood smiling and gently cradling a worn vintage Martin acoustic before easing into the opener "All The Beautiful Girls."

Despite just getting off of a plane from Paris, Ann was in fine form looking relaxed yet confident and sounding enchanting as ever as she eased in to the elegalic "Chelsea Burns" off of her fourth album "Nolita." Looking Dylanesque with an old acoustic and harmonica, Ann played sparse chords while singing candlelight whispers. -[Death + Taxes]

The above review comes from Keren Ann's recent appearance at The Bell House in Brooklyn, one of four shows that the vocalist played in early December (three of which were in NYC - the other two were at Joe's Pub) .

Now comes word that Keren has scheduled another two NYC dates as part of a North American tour to support her previously discussed LP 101 (out 3/22 on Blue Note). Tickets go on regular sale at noon on 1/21 for The Bell House on June 7 and Bowery Ballroom on June 8 (AMEX presale at Bowery is happening now). .

Keren recently dropped the video for "My Name is Trouble", a song off the new album. Watch that, and check out all tour dates, below...

Continue reading "Keren Ann touring in support of '101' (dates & new video)"

Keren Ann at Knitting Factory (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Keren Ann

Keren Ann has scheduled three NYC shows of four total East Coast dates, just in time for the holidays and cold weather. Joe's Pub will host the first pair for the sultry French/NYC singer/songwriter- December 8th (tickets) and 9th (tickets) with The Bell House hosting the third date with opener Dayna Kurtz (12/10, tickets). The next day, Keren Ann will head to Philadelphia for the final show at Tin Angel.

Keren Ann also has an upcoming LP on the way. Keren Ann 101 is due Feb 21, 2011 and the ten-track LP features the first single "My Name Is Trouble" which is streaming at her site (and below).

All tour dates and some videos below.

Keren Ann
Join the chanteuse for a rare New York show.

The Keren Ann show may be sort of rare, but it's actually just one of two she has scheduled in NYC during Hanukkah. Grab a Macaroons MP3 above.

Union Hall hosts some holiday-themed burlesque on Thursday, December 17th ("Hanukkah Hotness, Solstice Sexiness, Xmas Exploits, Yuletide Yumminess, and New Year Nudity, courtesy of your host GiGi La Femme with Anita Cookie, Jonny Porkpie, Nasty Canasta, Sizzle Dizzle, and Doc Wasabassco!"). Flyer below.

Speaking of Hanukkah Hotness, "Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad" is running at the Bleecker Street Theatre.

-"Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad" is a night of comedy, music and burlesque, told by the gals who learned to smoke at Hebrew School, got drunk at their Bat-Mitzvahs and would rather have more schtuppa than the chupah. These badass chosen chicks boldly dare to deconstruct years of tradition, expectations and guilt in a fast-paced vaudeville extravaganza.
Menorah HorahSouthpaw in Brooklyn also gets in on the action with the Menorah Horah feat. Golem & burlesque by The Schlep Sisters. Tickets and more info HERE.

Also tonight/Saturday (12/12), but at the new Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, it's the Major League Dreidel 2009 Tournament. Gods of Fire will be performing songs from their new album, Hanukkah Gone Metal.

Also at Southpaw, but not until Christmas Eve (12/24), BrooklynVegan is proud to be a sponsor of Jewltide 7, brought to you by JDub and Jewcy with "Boogaloo, Funk, Soul, Menorah Lighting, Soul Clap, Brooklyn Rhythms, Donuts". Dan Saks (aka DeLeon) will be performing with a DJ set by Jonathan Toubin. Tickets are on sale. Heebonism goes down the same night at Fontana's.

And as previously noted, you can also catch DeLeon Wednesday night (12/16) at Knitting Factory. Pharaoh's Daughter is also on the bill, and it's part of the The 5th Annual Sephardic Music Festival which runs from December 12th through the 19th with events at 92YTribeca, Union Hall, Joe's Pub and other places. Full schedule below...

Keren Ann

Keren Ann and trumpeter Avishai Cohen (not to be confused with Avishai Cohen the bass player) played their first of two shows at Joe's Pub last night (Nov 3, 2008), part of Joe's 10th anniversary celebration. Tonight (Nov 4) is the second show, and in case you were worried about missing any of the election...

... and an extra special addition to the 11/4 show:

Keren Ann's 2008 Election Results Spectacular

Where else can you mix top notch music with a high-stakes political spectacle like the 2008 Presidential election? Join Keren Ann and Avishai Cohen on their November 4th show (after you've voted of course!), where we'll be showing live-feed results of the election before and throughout the set so you won't have to miss a single moment.

We also invite you stick around after the show until we've got a new President!

If you miss both of these, there's also a third chance on Wednesday (Nov 5) at Southpaw.

Joe's Pub was packed last night with a line down the block before the show. Avishai accompanied Keren on trumpet as she alternated between singing songs in English and French. Avishai's sister Anat played clarinet with them during the encore.

Other election night events are listed HERE. More pictures from last night below...

Keren Ann @ Joe's Pub - March 2005 (more)
Keren Ann at Joes Pub

Three upcoming chances to catch Keren Ann in NYC. November 3rd & November 4th are at Joe's Pub - part of the venue's 10th anniversary celebration. The third show is November 5th and that's at the slightly larger Southpaw in Brooklyn. Both venues are great places to see Keren. At Joe's Pub you get the more intimate, silent, dark, seated experience, but that comes with expensive drink minimums (and equally expensive food if you choose to eat at the show). At Southpaw there might be noise and you'll stand, but you can still get up close and drinks are cheaper. All three shows are with 'Israeli jazz bassist, composer and arranger' Avishai Cohen. A video and the same dates below...
