Bill Callahan @ MHOW in July (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook returns to the elegant Allen Room in January for its fourteenth season celebrating the diversity of American popular song. For 16 nights the series will explore the best of the golden age of musical standards through to today's most dynamic songwriting. The music of Broadway, Latin culture and hip-hop, bluegrass, rock, and pop will be presented, along with three evenings devoted to great American composers and lyricists. The 2012 season - January 11 through February 11 - will bring to the stage some of today's most gifted interpreters of song, including Tony Award winners Laura Benanti, Michael Cerveris, and LaChanze, as well as the "Queen of British Musicals," the great Elaine Paige. In keeping with American Songbook's tradition of honoring great composers and lyricists, those being celebrated this season are William Finn (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Falsettos), folk icon Woody Guthrie, and Jule Styne (Gypsy, Funny Girl). A relatively new composer on the scene, multiple Tony-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights) will open the series with a new rap composition about Alexander Hamilton. Also performing in the rap/hip- hop vein is the exciting ensemble Ozomatli. The full schedule is at Lincoln Center's site and below...
From the rock canon will be J.D. Souther, performing songs he wrote for Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles as well as newer compositions, guitar god Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth doing an acoustic set, and the wildly expressive Merrill Garbus, known as tUnE-yArDs.
Singer/songwriters, both emerging and veteran, are part of American Songbook as well. Diva of the demi-monde Keren Ann is part of the series, as is the man whose deep voice and masculine presence has earned him the nickname "The John Wayne of Indie Rock," Bill Callahan.
The spectacular Allen Room is located in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center on Broadway at 60th Street. The Allen Room possesses one of New York's greatest settings - a stunning vista of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline that provides an evocative backdrop for the performers.
TICKETS can be purchased online beginning November 14, 2011 at Lincoln Center's website www.AmericanSongbook.org, via CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, at the Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall Box Office, or at the Frederick P. Rose Hall Box Office. Tickets for the Friends of Lincoln Center go on sale November 3, and single tickets go on sale to the public beginning November 14.

Chris Garneau opens the previously discussed Keren Ann tour which starts at The Bell House in Brooklyn tonight (6/7) and also hits Bowery Ballroom tomorrow (6/8). Advanced tickets for the Bowery show are still available. Bell House tickets can be purchased tonight at the door.
Chris hasn't released anything since his 2009 album on Absolutely Kosher, but Keren is out supporting her new album "101" which is out now...
"Last time around, [Keren Ann] risked fading into the ranks of female singer-songwriters; the album was strong but preferred to beguile with delicate arrangements and her tremulous voice. On 101, she finds a new niche. In many ways, the album's a counterpart to John Grant's Queen of Denmark, sharing its grounding in sturdy 70s pop-rock production and familiar melodies, and in the sense of humour that made Grant's opus seem such an anachronism. Neither record's particularly fashionable, but each is timeless, even classic. Basically, there's a lot of Fleetwood Mac in there." "In 45 minutes the show with Showalter starts! It's gonna be amazing, I can tell by his purple sweater. Color of royalty. He's feelin' it!" - Neko Case

Neko Case helped Michael Showalter promote his new book at an event at Barnes & Noble in Union Square last night (2/24), or to be more specific, Upstairs at the Square. Katherine Lanpher hosted. Neko sang four songs (setlist below). Showalter read a couple passages including a beat poetry inspired poem and a chapter about what to put in a Hollywood script. He also discussed the orgin of The Baxter, and they both talked about their writing process. Pictures from the bookstore are in this post.
Uptairs at the Square returns to Barnes & Noble in Union Square twice in March. Wednesday, March 9 will feature Rebecca Skloot (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks) and Cubic Zirconia (Follow Your Heart), and Thursday, March 24 has my favorite Keren Ann (101) with Barbara Browning (The Correspondence Artist).
Audience members included Eugene Mirman (who will again join Michael at the Bell House this weekend) and Todd Barry (who just announced an April tour with Neil Hamburger - dates below) (not to be confused with Neil's February and March tour).
Earlier in the day Neko "leaked" a new Dodos song via her Twitter. She wrote, "Fave song off new Dodos. Bummed I didn't didn't get to sing on it (I shouldn't be so greedy cuz I did sing on lots)." Download that above. The Dodos are heading out on tour in March and they'll be playing lots of SXSW shows in the process. Their updated dates, a BrooklynVegan day party included, are below.
Michael Showalter is also touring, though he won't be at SXSW. Neko Case is not touring, though she did just play a show at the Bell House and is giving away her car.
More B&N pictures, Dodos & Barry dates, and Neko's setlist, below...
Keren Ann at The Bell House - 12/10/10 (photo by Eloy Anzola)

Invoking a certain 1960s Parisian look, Keren Ann took the stage dressed in all black, sporting a fresh bob hairstyle. Backed with a trumpet, drums, and guitar, Ann stood smiling and gently cradling a worn vintage Martin acoustic before easing into the opener "All The Beautiful Girls."The above review comes from Keren Ann's recent appearance at The Bell House in Brooklyn, one of four shows that the vocalist played in early December (three of which were in NYC - the other two were at Joe's Pub) .Despite just getting off of a plane from Paris, Ann was in fine form looking relaxed yet confident and sounding enchanting as ever as she eased in to the elegalic "Chelsea Burns" off of her fourth album "Nolita." Looking Dylanesque with an old acoustic and harmonica, Ann played sparse chords while singing candlelight whispers. -[Death + Taxes]
Now comes word that Keren has scheduled another two NYC dates as part of a North American tour to support her previously discussed LP 101 (out 3/22 on Blue Note). Tickets go on regular sale at noon on 1/21 for The Bell House on June 7 and Bowery Ballroom on June 8 (AMEX presale at Bowery is happening now). .
Keren recently dropped the video for "My Name is Trouble", a song off the new album. Watch that, and check out all tour dates, below...

Keren Ann and trumpeter Avishai Cohen (not to be confused with Avishai Cohen the bass player) played their first of two shows at Joe's Pub last night (Nov 3, 2008), part of Joe's 10th anniversary celebration. Tonight (Nov 4) is the second show, and in case you were worried about missing any of the election...
... and an extra special addition to the 11/4 show:If you miss both of these, there's also a third chance on Wednesday (Nov 5) at Southpaw.Keren Ann's 2008 Election Results Spectacular

Join Keren Ann and Avishai Cohen on their November 4th show (after you've voted of course!), where we'll be showing live-feed results of the election before and throughout the set so you won't have to miss a single moment.

Keren Ann @ Joe's Pub - March 2005 (more)

Three upcoming chances to catch Keren Ann in NYC. November 3rd & November 4th are at Joe's Pub - part of the venue's 10th anniversary celebration. The third show is November 5th and that's at the slightly larger Southpaw in Brooklyn. Both venues are great places to see Keren. At Joe's Pub you get the more intimate, silent, dark, seated experience, but that comes with expensive drink minimums (and equally expensive food if you choose to eat at the show). At Southpaw there might be noise and you'll stand, but you can still get up close and drinks are cheaper. All three shows are with 'Israeli jazz bassist, composer and arranger' Avishai Cohen. A video and the same dates below...
