barista Win Butler serving up his new Haitian coffee blend
Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler had a busy weekend in NYC. His eventful three days began on Friday when he played the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game at MSG. His team, The West, beat The East (which Common and others were on) 59-51. Win had eight points and 12 boards. You can watch a video of him doing a layup, below.
He was wearing his Kanye West-designed Nike Red Octobers (not to be confused with Kanye's new Adidas Yeezy 750 Boost shoe that he debuted last week). Win's brother/bandmate Will tweeted "Kanye, you have to fix this #MVP thing. They have to respect the artistry" after Kevin Hart (who returns to MSG in July) got MVP.
After the game, Win headed to Bowery Ballroom where he was one of several DJs at the Rock On Foundation benefit, as DJ Windows 98. The Hold Steady headlined. Other DJs included members of Vampire Weekend, Das Racist and Caveman. That's him at Bowery pictured above.
Then Saturday afternoon Win headed to La Colombe cafe in Hudson Square where he acted as a barista, serving his new blend of RaRa Haitian Coffee that he created in partnership with La Colombe. The blend was partially to benefit Haiti, with proceeds going to Partners In Health and Haiti Coffee Academy. We stopped by the cafe to see barista Win in action, and while we were there he jumped on a table to give a speech about how the coffee is for a good cause. He then gave out sample cups to the crowd, took pictures with fans, and signed stuff. Some pictures of that are in this post.
That night, he was back under his DJ Windows 98 guise to get a late-night party at Baby's All Right going. Anyone catch that? UPDATE: Win now uploaded a mashup of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" and Beck's "Loser" which (according to a commenter below) he played back to back at Baby's. Listen below.
Finally, on Sunday Win headed to SNL's 40th anniversary to introduce Miley Cyrus. Some people were not happy about this decision. Here are some tweets:
Talented: Win Butler, Jack White. Not talented: Miley Cyrus, Kanye West. Understood SNL? #SNL40— AbsoluteQuinn (@AbsoluteLunati6) February 16, 2015
In a personal affront to musical talent, SNL just made Win Butler introduce Miley Cyrus.— Bethany Biron (@bethanybiron) February 16, 2015
Having Win Butler introduce a performance by Miley Cyrus, and not the other way around, is emblematic of everything wrong with SNL today.— Thomas Pashko (@thomaspashko) February 16, 2015
are you kidding me...having Win Butler introduce Miley Cyrus?? log off, SNL— Mike Smith© (@TheMikes_) February 16, 2015
Actually sat through SNL just to have Jack White appear for 3 seconds, Win Butler introduce Miley Cyrus, and Fiona Apple not appear at all— Hannah (@spooketti) February 16, 2015

Win Butler is returning to Madison Square Garden next week (2/13) -- not with Arcade Fire, but to play basketball on the Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. He'll join Common, Kevin Hart, Nick Cannon, Michael Rapaport, Anthony Anderson and other stars of stage and screen. Win is becoming almost as known for his court skills as his musicianship. Almost. The two All-Star Celebrity teams will be coached by Spike Lee & New York Knicks' Carmelo Anthony, and ESPN Radio's Mike Golic & Mike Greenberg. It's sold out but you can watch it live on ESPN on Friday, February 13 at 7 PM.
That is part of the NBA's All-Star Weekend that includes the All-Star Saturday Night at Barclays on February 14 and the actual NBA All-Star Game on February 15.
Sprite, one of the All-Star sponsors, is also throwing a private Drake and Nas concert on February 13 at Irving Plaza, as Gawker detailed a few days ago. Sprite's Slam Dunk Contest, part of the Barclays 2/14 event, happens right after the Taco Bell Skills Test and the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest, if you were wondering.
That same weekend, Win DJs NYC twice as DJ Windows 98. His first gig is The Hold Steady's Bowery Ballroom show on February 13 (which seems impossible since the game is that night, unless he DJs really late), and then he does it again at Baby's All Right on Valentine's Day.

The New York Comedy Festival got underway last night with Ricky Gervais shooting the breeze with John Hodgman at Town Hall. The fest keeps the laughs going all weekend.Tonight's (11/8) big event is the "Stand Up for Heroes" benefit for the Bob Woodruff Foundation at Beacon Theatre with Mike Birbiglia, Ricky Gervais, Patton Oswalt, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Stewart, Robin Williams, John Maher and Roger Waters. Would you be surprised to learn that it's sold out? Well it is, and was also really expensive, but the good news is you can watch it online for free at 8pm EST!
Other shows tonight include Artie Lange at Town Hall, and Shawn and Marlon Wayans at Carolines (and you can still get tickets to those shows).
Other events this weekend include Patton Oswalt at Town Hall and Aziz Ansari at The Apollo on Friday (11/9), not to mention the Ben Stiller Show reunion at the Paley Center; Jim Gaffigan at The Apollo, Rob Delaney at NYU Skirball Center and Kevin Hart at MSG on Saturday (11/10); and Robin Williams in conversation with David Steinberg at 92nd St. Y on Sunday (11/11). There are lots of other shows happening as well, and full schedule and tickets are at the NYCF2012 website.
Also part of the NYCF is Hannibal Buress at Santos on Saturday (11/10) with DJ support from Prince Paul and Mike Lawrence. Tickets are still available. Hannibal is also celebrating the 3rd anniversary of his Sunday night comedy show at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn with a special show this week (11/11) in the main KF performance space (his shows are usually in the bar). Prince Paul will also be DJing this, plus "special guests." While Hannibal's shows there are usually free, this is a ticketed one ("We need the money to buy all of the party soup" - Hannibal). We're guessing it will be well worth it.
Oh, and if you're going to Knitting Factory Sunday, we also have a very good reason you should get there a few hours early.
We already mentioned that Rob Delaney will be playing the New York Comedy Festval and now here's the whole 2012 line-up which goes down November 7 - 11. Performers include Aziz Ansari, Jim Gaffigan, Ricky Gervais, Kevin Hart, Bill Maher, Patton Oswalt, Brian Regan, Marlon & Shawn Wayans, Robin Williams and more. Tickets to most shows go on sale Monday, August 13 with a Citi Cardmember Presale happening right now (8/8). There's a NYCF presale that starts tomorrow (8/9) and you can get the password by liking their Facebook page.
Full NYCF line-up/schedule is below.
