Celestial Shore

You may be familiar with Shaking Through, the online music series produced by Weathervane Music, through its installments with Hop Along, The So So Glos, Sharon Van Etten, and others. The series gives the artists two days to record a brand new song, after which the song is released along with a short documentary video on the process.

The newest installment comes from Brooklyn's Celestial Shore, and features singer Sam Owens duetting with Empress Of (aka Lorely Rodriguez). It's tamer than the band's usual mathy stuff (save for the minor freakout at the end), instead opting for airy, lazy-Sunday psychedelia. You can check out the song and the video below, and download the track for free at Shaking Through.

As usual, Celestial Shore have local shows coming up, including one on November 22 at Shea Stadium with Zula, and Sam Owens plays a solo show on December 10 at Union Pool as part of Luke Temple's residency at the venue.

Meanwhile, Empress Of is opening both NYC shows on SOHN's tour.

Shaking Through recently launched a PledgeMusic campaign to keep it going for a fifth year in 2014, and there's some pretty cool rewards. For pledging $10 you get "The Complete Shaking Through Recordings 2009-2013," featuring all 44 songs they've done so far. For $30, you can see Hop Along's Frances Quinlan at a private studio concert. And there's a reverse auction for "The Signed Patti Smith Collection," which features signed copies of her book Just Kids, her lyric book, her double-CD with My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, and two of her recent albums, Trampin' (2004) and Banga (2012). The "reverse auction" is currently at $2,500 and it drops $50 a day until someone purchases it. More details on that here, and more reward options here.

Patti Smith, who recently eulogized Lou Reed, has three year-end shows coming up.

My Bloody Valentine's tour hits NYC for its first of two shows tonight (11/11) (tix).

MBV @ ATP NY 2008 (more by Abbey Braden)

My Bloody Valentine shocked fans this year by actually making good on their promise of finally releasing a new album, MBV, back in February -- the one Kevin Shields has been promising since 1991's Loveless. At that time, the band was already starting their 2013 tour which will wrap up here in NYC with shows at Hammerstein Ballroom on November 11 & 12. It's their first NYC shows since the very muddy All Points West Festival in 2009 and tickets are still available. I spoke to Kevin Shields on Thursday (10/24) via transatlantic call about the new record, the tour, Tool fans, the difference between digital and analogue and what to expect next.

Primal Scream at MHOW in 2009 (more by Tim Griffin)
Primal Scream

Indie/alternative vets Primal Scream have finally announced plans to follow up 2008's Beautiful Future, with a new album, More Light, due out May 6 via the band's new First International label in the UK (no US release announced yet).

The album announcement came along with a video for its first single, "2013," which features guitar from My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields who has toured with the 'Scream before and whose own band made a major comeback this year (via Pitchfork). It's a pretty great dose of neo-psychedelia and space rock that shows the legendary band ceasing to age.

The song will be made available to download on February 25. Watch the video below...

BEAUTIFUL NOISE is an in-depth exploration of a music movement in the late 20th century, a fascinating period when some innovative musicians mixed guitar noise into conventional pop song structures while maintaining a philosophy of letting the music speak for itself.

Although many of the people interviewed are notoriously press shy they have opened up about their music and experiences from over 20 years ago; how they defied the rules and became sonic innovators that have inspired so many.

Currently the documentary is in the final stages for worldwide release, and we need your help to raise the $75,000 to pay for limited run licensing and finishing costs to distribute in Film Festivals and on DVD/Blu-Ray.

This documentary will finally be released only if the fans of this music believe in this project and contribute.

Legendary shoegaze/dream pop bands My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, and The Jesus and Mary Chain are subject of new documentary, Beautiful Noise, who have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise enough money for the film to be distributed in film festivals and released on DVD/Blu-Ray (via Pitchfork). In addition to those three bands, the film will feature interviews with/appearances by members of other shoegaze pioneers like Ride, Slowdive, Lush, Curve, Swervedriver, Medicine, Pale Saints, and more, plus appearances by Wayne Coyne, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, and Robert Smith, and performance videos (and some interviews) with current bands like Sigur Ros, M83, A Place to Bury Strangers, Grouper, Serena Maneesh, and others. The Kickstarter campaign has reached just over $17,000 of its $75,000 goal as of this post, and is open until December 15. More info and rewards details at the documentary's Kickstarter project page.

This comes shortly after the news that My Bloody Valentine plans to release an album by the end of the year.

My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine frontman Kevin Shields has stated on more than one occasion that a followup to 1991's Loveless will be released, though it's been over two decades and the storied album remains unreleased. But in a new interview with NME, Shields is promising that we'll actually get the album by the end of 2012, and an EP with brand new material will follow shortly after. He says...

I think with this record, people who like us will immediately connect with something. Based on the very, very few people who've heard stuff - some engineers, the band, and that's about it - some people think it's stranger than 'Loveless'. I don't. I feel like it really frees us up, and in the bigger picture it's 100 per cent necessary.
You'd think with two months left in 2012, if this is actually a reality, a release date would be set but you never know. Cross your fingers.

MBV has some international dates coming up, which are listed below.

My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine played their first US show in 16 years last night at ATP NY @ Kutscher's (9/21/08). It was also the final, headlining performance of a three day weekend full of musicians playing at the old resort in the Catskill Mountains - many of them chosen by MBV to play the festival. My Bloody Valentine's next shows are Monday and Tuesday night in NYC. Stay tuned for the setlist and more about this show, and the entire ATP day three. But for now, more pictures from MBV @ ATP, below...
