The assets of Death Row Records, said to include master recordings of Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, were auctioned off today (Jan. 15) for $18 million to WIDEawake Entertainment Group, a development company out of Canada. Because of the less-than-expected acquisition price, the only creditor likely to capture a return after lawyers and other Chapter 11 administrative fees are paid is the Internal Revenue Service. In related(???) news, the movie Notorious opens today ("The life and death story of Notorious B.I.G. (a.k.a. Christopher Wallace), who came straight out of Brooklyn to take the world of rap music by storm."). Trailer below...That means other creditors, including unsecured ones like co-founder Lydia Harris, will be left out in the cold. Harris isn't content with the verdict.
"This was all a scam from the beginning," a disgruntled Harris tells Billboard. "Everyone wanted me to bring judgment down, and so I brought on the case. But now I'm not getting paid because I'm an unsecured creditor? Yet, administrators are getting paid and Suge [Knight]'s bills are still getting paid? If it wasn't for me no one would be getting money. They made sure it happened this way because I was the biggest creditor. There must be some internal thing going on and I'm obviously not in on it." Move D

Hope you were able to do some dancing this week. If not, Sunday is made for it - but first, Thursday's review:
I decided to hit up Hiro to see KIM. Someone (by process of elimination I want to say Kid Indie, but I'm not 100% sure) was deejaying when I arrived. He was playing good tracks, but many of them were ones that were really popular last summer. Is anyone else finding that there doesn't seem to be a group of electronic songs that define the summer of '08? I'm listening to a lot of things, but nothing is really sticking like a lot of songs from last summer did...
KIM went on around 1. His set was good . Much of it consisted of tracks I hadn't heard before - very, very fresh and great transitions, but maybe a little too smooth. It was like listening to a podcast playing in the background - none of the tracks really made me want to get up and dance. Also, Hiro was pretty empty - not sure of the cause, possibly Santos' line-up, or just Santos in general? Who knows...
On to Sunday...

Fred Falke @ Tribeca Grand - July 12, 2008 (CRED).

I feel like so much has happened since my last post. Unfortunately before I left, packing and all that last minute, pre-travel running around caught up with me so I was only able to go out on the 3rd. I had my first Santos experience and it couldn't have been better. No hassle at the door, good opening set from Star Eyes, very impressive set from Chromeo's Dave-1 (tons of really good, underplayed electro remixes - including the Lifelike remix of Needy Girl that was on my Montreal Muxtape, and a lot of classic French house). Despite desperately looking forward to hearing Dominique Keegan's set, I was totally beat, not dancing anymore, and leaning against a big column when he went on at 2, so I called it an early night.
Friday night I really wanted to see Montrealers, NROTB at the Annex, but it just wasn't happening. Luckily I more than made up for it with all the music I experienced the following week while I was actually in Montreal. Each experience was serious fun in some way or another. Here's the quick version of what I managed to catch:
Saturday night - Guillaume & the Coutu DumontsI arrived back in New York around 8:30 on Friday and promptly passed out after being home a few hours. Saturday morning (July 12) I read Dave's lovely post to see what was up and nearly fell off my chair when I read that Fred Falke was going to be here! I got warmed up at PS1 early in the evening, waited in the longest beer line I've ever experienced there for most of Free Blood's set, hung around for about an hour of funky, disco-ey goodness from DJ Spun, and then after a few hours I headed down to the Tribeca Grand where Solid Goldberger and I witnessed a truly great, exciting set from Fred Falke. He did it up right using a variety of electronic elements coupled with some great live bass. It was easily one of the best shows I've been to this year.Sunday - the Tamtams at Parc Mont-Royal and Piknic Electronikwith Mossa, The Bulgarian, and Luke Solomon at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
Sunday night - Team Canada at Blue Dog Motel.
Tuesday night - the F-Yeah tour with Monotonix & Team Robespierre at La Sala Rossa and Teenwolf at Blizzarts.
Wednesday night - WhiteRoom at Casa del Popolo and DJ Vivie-Ann at Cherry.
Another excellent show (also in the live/electronic vein) I've been to in '08 was the Black Ghosts at Glasslands back in May. The Ghosts will be hitting Brooklyn again with their own live/electro take at Studio B on Saturday night. More on that later this week, but be sure to RSVP ($5) to weare138nyc@yahoo.com or get a ticket online or at Other Music in the meantime! If not it will cost you $10 at the door.
Before that show and the rest of the weekend is anywhere in sight there are already a ton of things lined up to get you moving on the floor. Most of them are happening on Thursday (tonight - July 17)....

m83 @ Bowery Ballroom - June 4, 2008 (more by Bao)

I caught an amazing set from m83 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg Tuesday night (who also played Bowery last night). Anthony Gonzalez creates interesting, thoughtful, atmospheric music whose heavier rock elements are greatly emphasized during live performance. His ability to do this while still allowing all the beautiful subtleties of the music to shine through makes for an excellent live experience. Despite being one of my favorite bands, M83 fell off of my increasingly electro-oriented listening radar. I'd only heard a handful of tracks from Digital Shades Vol. 1 and Saturdays = Youth. I was afraid I was going to get to the show and have no idea what was going on. After M83 opened with a track I hadn't heard before (but that definitely had the M83 sound I know and love), they quelled my worries by going straight into "Run Into Flowers" from their 2003 release Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Thankfully this wasn't the only flashback. The entire set alternated new, catchier, lyrics-based songs from Saturdays = Youth such as "Graveyard Girl" and "Kim & Jessie" with great older tracks like "Don't Save Us From the Flames".
Thursday night (June 5) things get dancey, but more on the rock side with a bunch of bands including Radio 4, The Cloud Room, Cassettes Won't Listen, and Foreign Islands kicking off the night at 8. From 12-4 Steve Aoki, DJ Cat and others are on deejay duty...
