Montreal duo The Muscadettes are currently holed up working on their debut album but while we wait for news on that, they've offered up holiday treat in the form of new song, "Christmas Kitty." With a twangy, B-52's lead, its a bouncy little stocking stuffer that makes its premiere in this post. You can stream it below.
The Muscadettes, who were last in NYC for CMJ, have also been making a list and checking it twice, in this case their Top 10 LPs of 2014 which they've shared with us as well. You can check that out below too.
Topshelf Records has had a pretty great year, putting out records by several rising young bands across various rock subgenres (not just emo!), as well as long-awaited returns from veteran bands. Some of those artists, like You Blew It!, are already ending up on 2014 year-end lists, and we asked a few bands on the label to tell us their favorite albums of the year. Below, you'll find year-end lists from You Blew It!, The Jazz June, Cut Teeth, Nai Harvest, and label co-founder Kevin Duquette.
You Blew It! recently announced an upcoming EP on Jade Tree and a tour with Rozwell Kid (who are on their list), Tiny Moving Parts (who are an honorable mention) and Sorority Noise. As discussed, that tour hits NYC on 2/20 at The Studio at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show go on sale at 10 AM on Friday (12/5).
The Jazz June are going on a tour with labelmates Field Mouse (who are on their list) soon, which hits NYC on 12/27 at Saint Vitus (tickets). They put out their first album since 2002 this year, and also headlined the BV CMJ showcase which also featured Beach Slang, who are on their list.
In other Topshelf news, they've got a Caravels / Octaves split, a new Suis La Lune album, and new music from Kind of Like Spitting on the way. And as discussed, Bob Nanna is releasing the first City On Film album since 2005 on the label this month. He already released the first Braid album since 1998 on the label earlier in the year.

Willie Nelson / MSMR in the SoundWave Tent / the crowd
The redheaded stranger turned 80 this year and he's no worse for wear. Like the whiskey he often sings about (he opened with 1973's "Whiskey River") Willie Nelson only seems to get better with age -- his voice deeper, his words wiser -- even if he's increasingly aware of his creeping mortality. That the man closed his triumphant set with "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die" seemed a little morbid if not too on the nose, but that combination of libertarian spunk and unblinking truthfulness is what makes Nelson a living classic. Which must be the reason John "Uncle Jesse" Stamos felt compelled to slip onstage and play bongos in Willie's Family band for the second half of the gig (he did fine, now let's move on). "Still Is Still Moving to Me" was another latter-day highlight, though the Outside Lands audience was most thrilled to hear old soulful numbers like "Georgia on My Mind" and "Night Life," and outlaw tales like "Beer for My Horses" and "Me and Paul." - [SPIN]The 2013 Outside Lands Music Festival came to a close back on Sunday (8/11) with performances from country music legend Willie Nelson, Vampire Weekend, Hall & Oates, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foals, Fishbone, and more. Pictures from Sunday's fun are in this post.
Much like we did at Lollapalooza and Firefly, BrooklynVegan commanded the SoundWave Tent for two hours each day with hosts Dave Hill and Christen Thomas. Sunday we had live performances with Dawes and MSMR and interviews with King Tuff and Camper Van Beethoven. Pics from that are HERE and in this post as well.
Dan Auerbach, no longer the owner of Dylan's hair (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Black Keys singer/record producer Dan Auerbach had been going through a divorce with Stephanie Gonis, and TMZ reports that his wife has obtained a pretty interesting piece of their assets...
Here comes the story of Bob Dylan's hair ... which apparently belongs to the ex-wife of Black Keys singer Dan Auerbach. Seriously (according to court docs obtained by TMZ).Jack White's divorce has also taken a bad turn (though nothing to do with celebrity body parts), and in emails sent to ex-wife Karen Elson, he revealed some hard feelings about the other singer/guitarist-of-blues-rock-duo-whose-name-has-a-color-in-it (namely, their kids being enrolled in the same Nashville school):
We've learned ... Auerbach's extremely bitter divorce with Stephanie Gonis was finalized this week in Tennessee ... after the warring couple came to terms on splitting up their assets.
First, the money: She gets more than $5 million. Plus, she gets the couple's 2012 Toyota Highlander and one of the family homes.
But who cares, because the real story here is BOB DYLAN'S HAIR.
According to the divorce docs, the couple owns an asset described as "Bob Dylan Hair."
It's unclear how the hair was obtained ... when it was obtained ... if the hair contains any product ... etc. -- but the point is, Dan agreed to part ways with it in the divorce.
My concern with Auerbach is because I don't want the kids involved in any of that crap ... That's a possible twelve f***ing years I'm going to have to be sitting in kids chairs next to that a**hole with other people trying to lump us in together.Meanwhile, Jack's label, Third Man Records, just released a live King Tuff album, and there's a live Melvins LP due out September 10. You can stream "Just Strut" from the King Tuff LP, below.
To take this all full circle, a recording recently surfaced of Jack White and Bob Dylan performing The White Stripes' "Ball and Biscuit" back in 2004. Listen below...

Dawes, Dave Hill, Christen Thomas, some dude & King Tuff
Like at Lollapalooza and Firefly, and like we'll be doing again at Bumbershoot, BrooklynVegan was set up each day of Outside Lands in the Soundwave tent where our hosts Christen Thomas and Dave Hill DJ'd, told jokes and interviewed and hosted bands that were playing the fest. Stay tuned for the audio. Meanwhile. pictures from all three days of the tent at the San Francisco fest, though mostly all from Sunday when we had a packed schedule, are in this post.
Taylor from Dawes played three songs, two with his brother singing, before chatting with us. Foals and King Tuff were also great to talk to. MS MR were not only huge crowd pleasers, our host Christen Thomas was pleased to realize during the performance that Lizzy was her intern at Vice many years ago. Camper Van Beethoven performed three songs for us too... total pros.
Pictures from the rest of OSL HERE. More from the Soundwave tent below...

Wavves, who were last in NYC in April as part of a small club tour, will be playing bigger places this fall when the band hits the road with King Tuff and Jacuzzi Boys. That's a pretty appealing trifecta of party garage pop. The tour will hit NYC on October 3 at Irving Plaza. Tickets to that show go on sale Friday (7/26) at 10 AM, with a Citi Cardmember presale beginning Wednesday (7/24) at 10 AM, and Livenation and Music Geeks presales starting Thursday (7/25) at 10 AM. (Music Geeks password is "musicgeeks"). All tour dates are listed, along with a "skydiving tour announcement" video, below.
Jacuzzi Boys' (who were also just here, touring with Man, Or Astro Man?) new self-titled LP will be out September 10 via Hardly Art. Watch the video for single "Double Vision" and stream another track from the album, below.
King Tuff at Knitting Factory in 2011 (more by Jessica Amaya)
As mentioned, garage rocker King Tuff is reissuing his long-out-of-print 2008 debut, Was Dead, this year and that reissue just came out this week (5/28). It was awarded a "best new reissue" on Pitchfork. If you haven't heard it, you can stream the album in its entirety below.
King Tuff is playing a previously discussed one-off release show for the reissue in NYC this Sunday (6/2) at Bowery Ballroom. No openers for that show were announced when we first mentioned it, but since then Brooklyn rockers Nude Beach were added. Sunday's show is one of two currently scheduled local shows for Nude Beach before they head out on tour. The other is on June 16 at Fitness (1196 Myrtle Ave) with Vacation and others, and when they return home from tour they play Knitting Factory (7/5) with Prince Rupert's Drops (tickets).
The Bowery Ballroom show this Sunday is also with Hector's Pets. Tickets are still available and we're also giving away a pair.
Updated Nude Beach dates are listed, along with details on that ticket contest, the show flyer, and the King Tuff LP stream, below...
still from "I Appear Missing" video
As mentioned, Queens of the Stone Age are releasing a new album, ...Like Clockwork, which is due out June 4 via Matador. They already released the first single, "My God Is The Sun," and now they've given us another... well half of it at least. A 30-second teaser for QOTSA track "I Appear Missing" aired on Adult Swim last night (5/5), and now the band have released a three-minute video for the track, but the album version is reportedly a six-minute song. You can watch the three-minute video below.
Speaking of Adult Swim, they just released the free Garage Swim compilation, which features new music from Thee Oh Sees, King Tuff & Gap Dream, Jeff the Brotherhood, Black Lips, Mikal Cronin, King Khan and the Gris Gris, Mind Spiders, OBN IIIs, Weekend, Cheap Time, Bass Drum of Death, and more. You can download it for free HERE and stream the entire thing below.

King Tuff @ BVSXSW 2013 (more by Bruno Simões)
It's always seemed as though Was Dead kinda came outta nowhere. Even for me, I don't remember writing the songs and I barely remember recording them. I do know that they came from the purest part of my heart and they were made with a mischievous little smile on my face.As mentioned on BV Austin, Burger Records is reissuing King Tuff's way-out-of-print 2008 album, Was Dead, which will hit stores on May 28, pushed back from the original 4/30 release date. You can stream "Dancing on You" from it below and pre-order your copy from Burger.
I think it was 2006. I recorded mostly late at night, in a giant dirty ballroom called Vegetable Street, in my hometown of Brattleboro, Vermont. My days were filled with endless cups of Mocha Joe's coffee, black, sitting on the stoop with my friends, and spazzing out on my guitar. Looking down at the streets of Brattleboro below and out at Mount Wantastiquet and beyond. I didn't have a cell phone or a computer and the only way to find me was either to call my mom, Lil' Smashy, who was probably already too busy cooking me something really delicious, or spot me in the corner of the coffee shop spying on people and drawing them in my sketchbook. They were very chill times.
Kyle, who recently tore through Austin for a bunch of SXSW shows (including one of our day parties) will stop in NYC on his way home from Europe (where he's playing Primavera Sound in Barcelona and other shows) to play Bowery Ballroom on June 2. Tickets to that show go on AmEx presale on Wednesday (4/24) at noon with the general on-sale happening Friday (2/26) at noon. It's a one-off show, not part of any North American/US tour.
All upcoming King Tuff dates are listed, along with that track stream, below.

Austra / APTBS / the crowd
We wrapped up our stay at The Main and The Jr (aka old Emo's) with our fourth and final BrooklynVegan SXSW day party on Saturday (3/16). Unfortunately, Foxygen had to drop off at the last minute because the singer lost his voice. They would have played the outdoor stage (Pianos Stage), where we still saw sets from the arty synthpop of Empress Of, the loudest set of all of our day parties from A Place to Bury Strangers, and a super fun set from catchy UK rockers Palma Violets. Then came the sexy R&B of Autre Ne Veut, followed by a set by Austra, who were previewing expansive material from their upcoming sophomore album, Olympia. Then finally, the outdoor stage was wrapped up with a set from psychedelic pop New Zealanders Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
Inside, the show kicked off with the catchy indie pop of TEEN, followed by rockin' UK band Peace, and then three consecutive synthpop groups, Feathers, MS MR, and Doldrums. Then the show took a louder turn with an adrenaline-pumping set from White Lung, bouncy young garage punks The Orwells, and finally King Tuff.
In addition to the music, we had an interactive photo and video booth set up by Oxygen tattoo show, "Best Ink". The second season (hosted by Pete Wentz who made a surprise appearance in their booth) premieres April 3rd. Onkyo was there, sampling their new headphones which hit stores next month. mophie maker of invaluable iPhone chargers, were giving away discount cards good at their pop-up shop which was set up right across the street on Red River. We were also serving complimentary Jameson, and Zico coconut water, and free vegan queso and chips from Food For Lovers. We also had BrooklynVegan t-shirts for the first 50 people in the door, thanks to American Apparel. Also thanks to our other sponsors, Korg, Vox, Blackstar, Creative Recreation, Signazon, Zazoo, and Redigi.
More pictures from Saturday's party below...

Pitchfork just posted their much anticipated list of the top 100 tracks of 2012. The #1 slot went to... Grimes! Whether you thought the whole of her album Visions was good or not, it was hard to deny the charms of "Oblivion." (Having that great video didn't hurt either.) Do you think it deserved to top the list? If not then what song should've?
You can check out P4K's entire hot 100 of 2012 below.
