Radiohead drummer Philip Selway is coming to the US soon for a tour which begins with his NYC show at Le Poisson Rouge, and ends with his second of two Coachella appearances. He's now confirmed that the opener on his non-festival dates will be Adem.
Adem (full name Adem Ilhan) is a folktronica/post-rock solo artist on Domino, who put out three albums in the mid-late 2000s, one of which was a covers album with songs by Bjork, Aphex Twin, Bedhead, PJ Harvey, and more. He's also a member of the '90s/'00s post-rock band Fridge with Kieran Hebden, aka Radiohead's pal Four Tet, and is one half of the duo Silver Columns with Johnny Lynch (aka The Pictish Trail). And he played on Philip's most recent album, 2014's Weatherhouse.
In addition to opening the shows, Adem is playing in Philip's live band, along with Kath Mann (aka Quinta) and Chris Vatalaro. The NYC show happens April 10 at LPR, and tickets are still on sale. All dates are listed below.
In other Radiohead news, The Bends turns 20 on Friday (3/13), and Stereogum are celebrating with Radiohead Week. Among their features is a post with 33 musicians discussing their favorite Radiohead song, including Ed Droste, J Mascis, Kip Berman, Wayne Coyne, Kathleen Hanna, Sadie Dupuis, Noel Gallagher, and more. They've also got Perfect Pussy singer Meredith Graves interviewing her dad about them (she calls them "middle of the road" and "the uncanny valley of interesting music").

TPOBPAH @ Summerstage 7/7/2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
While The Pains of Being Pure at Heart didn't release an album this year, they have stayed busy touring on the heels of last year's terrific Belong. (They did put out a covers 7" in the UK though which is worth seeking out.) The band play a free hometown show this Friday (12/14) at Brooklyn Night Bazaar with Black Marble, Habibi and Heavens Gate. Doors are at 6 PM with bands starting at 8 PM, and it's all ages. Lines to get in Brooklyn Night Bazaar have been long, but move pretty quickly.
In other TPOBPAH news, singer/guitarist Kip Berman is one of the conspirators behind "Rough Smooch" a new indiepop party that has its debut this Sunday (12/16) at Williamsburg bar Legion. Wear your cutest anorak to this night that features performances by The Hairs, Kissing is a Crime and Grand Resort, plus Kip and WNYU's Maria Sherman on DJ duty. The party is free and starts at 9PM.
And lastly, the Pains were kind enough to send us a year-end music list. The whole band are music obsessives and couldn't whittle the list down to ten, so they sent a list of "some music we thought was cool in 2012." Kip adds, "I'm certain the other PAINS would put Kurt's Ice Choir record Afar on our list, but I think it would make him feel weird and, perhaps, seem nepotistic. But his record is really good, and however you feel about Pains, you should give it a listen." Ice Choir, by the way, play Cameo on December 22 with Cool Angels and Limited (info).

It's not entirely uncommon, especially these days, for a band to go from playing Cake Shop to headlining Webster Hall in little over a year, but one of the amazing surprises of 2009 is that it happened to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Made entirely of genuine indie obsessives who, when not on tour are at other people's shows, the Pains moved beyond the cardigan crowd to what you could almost call... mainstream success? It doesn't hurt that their self-titled debut was chock-full of irresistible pop songs, three of which were actual singles (all downloadable at the top of this post), and the rest could've been. The band rest up until February when they tour Japan, Australia and New Zealand -- tour dates are at the bottom of this post. Singer Kip Berman answered our year-end in questionnaire...
