Caleb of Zozobra w/ Old Man Gloom at Europa, May '12 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Caleb Scolfield

Cave In and Old Man Gloom have been inactive as of late, which gives Caleb Scolfield time to concentrate on his post-hardcore/sludge project Zozobra. Stream all of their latest effort Savage Masters below, courtesy of Lambgoat.

Reminder, Invisible Oranges is proud to present the upcoming Zozobra/Kowloon Walled City tour, which kicks off in the second week in April and includes dates throughout the Northeast. Saint Vitus will host the April 6 date featuring special guest The Austerity Program, tickets are still available.

Tour flyer and that LP stream is below.

The dates kick off in Brooklyn with a BV-Sponsored date at Saint Vitus on April 6 and continue on down to Durham, NC, eventually concluding in Boston eight days later. Zozobra (featuring Caleb Scofield of Cave In) have completed work on their first album in close to five years, due via Brutal Panda Records later this year. More details soon. Meanwhile, KWC released Container Ships late last year and recently played Hemlock in the Bay Area.

Kowloon Walled City at Cake Shop, Sept 2010 (more by Justin Tyler)
Kowloon Walled City

San Francisco sludge killers Kowloon Walled City's last go around in the NYC area was paired with the nasty doomers in Batillus (who play 285 Kent on the same day as the BV-BBG showcase). The two played a string of shows together, including a pair of dates at Acheron and Cake Shop. Possibly owing some influence to their nautically-themed tour mates, KWC are readying their new LP and first in four years, Container Ships. The long-player hits on December 4 via Brutal Panda, pre-order yours.

Container Ships features seven tracks including the first song to see the light of day, "The Pressure Keeps Me Alive." Check that out below, alongside the track listing and the album art. No tour dates yet, but that should change very soon. Until then, get familiar with their recorded works below.

Destroyed in Kowloon
Kowloon Walled City

Kowloon Walled City headlined Cake Shop on 9/18 as part of a tour with NYC greats Batillus. Riff Cannon provided support that night and the next in Boston.

KWC faithfully reproduce some of their fantastic guitar tones live, and then some. The four piece delviered a blistering set at Cake Shop that was as impressive as their recent recorded output. Batillus improve every single time I see them, and the Brooklyn band delivered another fantastic set that included material from their recent split with Hallowed Butchery and future/previously-unreleased material.

If you missed the show, you can catch both KWC and Batillus when the bands play Acheron with Liturgy on Oct 2nd.

More pictures and some video from Cake Shop is below...

Kowloon Walled City
Kowloon Walled City

Much like Wolvserpent recently did, I propose Kowloon Walled City change their name. After being bludegeoned by their recorded output, it's obvious that the band name should probably be Kowloon Walled F'N City.

And now the newly f'n renamed (by me) KWFC has a new f'n release under their belts, a three way split with Fight Amp and Ladder Devils perfectly titled Lose/Lose/Lose. Due on Brutal Panda Records in September, the limited-to-300 12" features two tracks from each band, and is "packaged with a special silk screened poly bag and a 12"x16" fold-under insert". Preorder it now, and dig on a pair of tracks from that LP above including "The Commuter", which makes its first appearance above (both are also streaming below).

Kowloon Walled City will play NYC TWICE with Batillus in the coming months as part of BV/1000 Knives events: Cake Shop gets 'em on 9/18 with Riff Cannon and Acheron gets a piece on 10/2 with Liturgy. Full KWC/Batillus dates, a stream of the above tracks, as well some video are all below.

Batilus on stage with Kat of Salome (more by Chris LaPutt)
Batillus with Kat of Salome

Complete Failure. Celeste. Thou. These are some of a few bands that have offered their recorded output for FREE in the past, and considering the quality of those releases, they easily could have charged for those LPs. Now two other bands that have offered their material for free download in the past, Batillus and Kowloon Walled City, will hit the road for a string dates which will include TWO NYC shows. Both shows will be presented by BrooklynVegan & 1000Knives with a performance from Riff Cannon on the first date, Cake Shop on Sept 18th, and Liturgy on the second, October 2nd at Acheron.

Download all of KWC's releases at their site and Batillus's debut EP (before they added Fade) at their site.

Batillus was last seen at Cake Shop, where the band destroyed amidst a similarly fierce lineup of Salome and Landmine Marathon. Video from that show and tour dates are below...

Javelina @ the Northside BV-BBG Showcase (more by Jason Walker)
Javelina

Alright! I get it. Doomriders rules. Revocation is up there. There's a new Converge and Baroness on the way. But even with all of those great releases, it suprises me that Javelina isn't near some of the top of those lists. The band's filthy debut was a monster and their new one, Beasts Among Sheep, only adds to their considerable reputation. If you are a fan of the last LP, this one is a must have. Dig on "Stepchild" above and preorder the limited edition LP version of Javelina's Beasts Among Sheep via Brutal Panda Records and the CD version via Translation Loss.

Speaking of that Doomriders album, Darkness Come Alive is out NOW via Deathwish Records. Though the party vibe that permeated through Black Thunder is mostly gone, it has been replaced by a propulsive punk rock fury and, at times, a Misfits-era Danzig croon (see "Come Alive")! There are quite a few killer moments on this long-player, but we present to you the most "fuck you" of them all, the galloping "Lions" downloadable above!

In our last round up, we shined a light on into the deepest fathoms of Australia and the truly frightening Portal. The band's claustrophobic and positively frightening new death metal LP, Swarth, relies as much on freak-out atmosphere as it does killer discordant riffery. Swarth is due out on 10/20 via Profound Lore and we have a second taste in the form of "Omenknow" above.
Misery Index have completed four new songs and are looking to enter the studio in early 2010 to record their follow up to Traitors! Stoked.

Iron Age @ Cake Shop (more by Jason Walker)
Iron Age

I still remember that kick ass Cake Shop show with Iron Age, Mind Eraser, and Sex Vid, and walking out of that show wanting more. Thankfully, I can add to those great memories with a PAIR of Iron Age shows in the coming weeks! First up, the rowdy Texans will team up with the great Mother of Mercy (profiled here) for a show at Cake Shop (10/16). The next day (10/17), look for the band to pull a double header with a day show at Generation Records and a night show at The Charleston with Brain Killer, Naam & Descender. Speaking of Mind Eraser, the band will team up with the kick ass Iron Lung for a string of east coast dates which will include Cake Shop on 11/8! Full Iron Age and Iron Lung dates are below.

Black Skies will release the limited edition vinyl from their 2008 EP Hexagon on I'm Better Than Everyone Else Records. The Chapel Hill doom trio is currently on the hunt for drummer #5, but not before blessing us with some seriously killer riffage in the form of "Smoke & Mirrors" above. Preorder Hexagon here.

Power Pellut is also releasing their debut LP via I'm Better than Everyone Else Records. Preorder that here and dig on "Black Betty" from that LP above!

Church of Misery will release a live record culled from their recent set at Roadburn 2009! More details are to come, but look for Burning World to do the honors in November/December of this year. In the meantime, dig on this killer live video from Roadburn 2009!

That video, news on Kowloon Walled City, Boris, Asphyx, Struck By Lightning, Ringworm, Repulsion and more!

Yes, that is a clock on his head.
Portal

Portal is currently prepping their new album, Swarth, for release via Profound Lore on 10/20. For the unaware, Portal is definitely an odd duck (in the best way possible!), as the Aussies employ discordant chord patterns ala French BM masterminds Deathspell Omega, and a generally discomforting atmosphere abounds. Dig on the extremely promising "Larvae" from Swarth available above! The abstract blackened death metal band from Australia is also one of a few bands that have already been announced for Maryland Deathfest 2010 along with additions like Gorguts, Asphyx, Wolfbrigade, Gridlink, Impaled, and many many noteable others! Full MDF list is below.

Mammoth Grinder has released their new LP, Extinction of Humanity, which is available via Cyclopean Records. The band, which (as we know) shares members with Hatred Surge & Iron Age, combines an old school death metal approach of Entombed / Dismember with the charge of hardcore. Their new LP delivers on the promises made on No Results. Check out a pair of MP3s from Extinction of Humanity available for download above!

As previously discussed, Gnaw Their Tongues are releasing All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity on 9/8 via Crucial Blast. Check out a song from the LP above, "Rife With Teeth".

In case you somehow missed it, the new Converge track, "Dark Horse" premiered on Stereogum last week. Axe To Fall has been in heavy rotation since I received a copy of this bad boy a few weeks ago, and I think that this could be their best record since Jane Doe. Check out the MP3 above and judge for yourself.

Pelican
Pelican

Their show with sunn O))) / Earth / Eagle Twin is little more than three weeks away (tix), and now Pelican has dropped a new MP3 for download from their LP, What We All Come To Need. Dig on "Strung Up From The Sky" above. Helmed by Chris Common (These Arms Are Snakes) in July and featuring appearances from Greg Anderson (sunn O))), Goatsnake, etc), Aaron Turner (Isis), Ben Verellen (Harkonen, Helms Alee), and Alan Epley (Life And Times), the new album is set to blast off at their new home, Southern Lord. Look for Pelican to hit the road with Black Cobra and Disappearer for a fall tour. Black Cobra also recently signed to Southern Lord.

As previously discussed, Kowloon Walled City, is currently prepping their new LP Gambling On The Richter Scale for release 9/29 on The Perpetual Motion Machine. Preorders for the new Kowloon Walled City are up here, but meanwhile, dig on one of the tracks from the LP, "Clockwork", above.

Kill the Client
Kill The Client

Let's kick this thing off the RIGHT way, an absolutely BRUTAL grind record out NOW on Willowtip.... no, not the new Phobia (though that is good, and out NOW) or the new Maruta (also out NOW)... it's Cleptocracy by unstoppable force known as Kill The Client! Blazing through eighteen tracks of searing grindcore, Cleptocracy is both destructive and engaging.... Check out "Cleptocracy and "Divide And Conquer" downloadable above!

* The above Deathwish sampler features songs by Trap Them, Blacklisted, Cold World, Narrows, 108, United Nations, The Hope Conspiracy, Victims, Rot In Hell and many others.

Graf Orlock have announced details of their upcoming cinemagrind monstrosity, Destination Time Today, along with a new track streaming at their myspace! Look for the record to land on Level Plane (Date TBD) possibly around the time that Graf Orlock hits the East Coast for a tour that is (not fully) scheduled for Jan 2009! Check out the basic itinerary below, and hold tight for details to come.

Mastodon have anounced details for Crack The Skye, their upcoming album due in 2009! As discussed, Brendan O'Brien will be on the boards for the seven track (listing below), fifty minute opus which was was recorded at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta. Meanwhile, the band has announced a handful of European dates with Metallica (find 'em below).

PlanksThe sickening crusty hardcore of Planks are one my my latest obsessions, and their limited 12" (500 copies) is out NOW on Narshardaa. Pick it up here and check out "Deluge" from that LP, which the band has made available for download above and scoot on over to Aversionline, who has a second track for download! Also out now on Black Box, a split LP that Planks rocked with Tombs... a taste of which is above in the form of "A Sunken City". Speaking of Tombs, the band permenantly added Andrew Hernandez (ex-ASRA badass) on drums, and I must say that he absolutely KILLED it when I saw them lay waste to the Relapse showcase during CMJ.

Black Elk's Always A Six Never A Nine is available NOW over at Crucial Blast. Check out THREE songs from the record available for download above!

Cattle Decapitation have posted a new song from and announced a date for (Jan 20th, 2009- INAUGURATION DAY!) their new album, The Harvest Floor! Produced by Billy Anderson, The Harvest Floor will include contributions by Ross Sewage (Impaled/Ludicra), Dino Sommese (Dystopia/Asunder), Jarboe (Swans), Jackie Perez Gratz (Grayceon/Amber Asylum), and John Wiese. Check out the album cover below....
