Overkill @ Stage 48, 11/24/2013
The Overkill/Kreator/Warbringer fall tour reached its conclusion with two NYC appearances at Stage 48 this past Saturday and Sunday (11/23 and 11/24). Metalheads with mortgages and 401(k)s everywhere are bummed it's over. Since you've no doubt read every single word of our preposterously epic Overkill interview on Invisible Oranges, you knew exactly what to expect from Overkill's headlining sets. If you missed the show (or want to relive its circle pit-infused glory), check out the pictures of all three bands from the 11/24 gig in this set. And if you need to brush up on Overkill's catalog, all 17 of their albums are streaming in the aforementioned interview.

Kreator at Best Buy, September 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
German thrash gods Kreator will team with Overkill as part of a string of North American dates this fall, InvisibleOranges reports. The co-headlining dates will see the bands on the road for four weeks, including two NYC shows at Stage 48 on November 23 & 24. Ticketing info is on the way.
Tour dates and some streaming audio is below, including a stream of Kreator's latest release, 2012's Phantom Antichrist.
It's that time of year already I guess. NME quizzed a whole bunch of artists about their favorite album of the year. Bat For Lashes chose Alt-J who recently won the Mercury Prize and who chose Polica as their favorite. That and more, if you can understand what they're saying, in the video, below....

Accept at Best Buy Theater 9/7/2012
Thrash favorites Kreator headlined Best Buy on September 7 as part of the "Teutonic Terror Attack" which saw support from Accept and Swallow the Sun on that beautiful night in Times Square. Though Kreator fans were the most well represented at the venue and they delivered a ripping set of both old and new songs, it was Accept's AC/DC-meets-Scorpions set that stole the show. Though without original, pint-sized German terror Udo on the mic, Mark Tornillo ably handled vocals with a raspy Bon Scott-style delivery while the rest of the band hammed it up with coordinated stage moves. By the time the band had delivered their big MTV hit from the 80s, "Balls to the Wall," the audience was already crowd-surfing and going insane.
Pictures and setlists from Best Buy Theater are below.

German thrash crew Kreator are back with a new LP Phantom Antichrist and have teamed with Accept for a US tour dubbed "Teutonic Terror Attack". Finland's Swallow the Sun have also hopped aboard, and the trio will descend upon Best Buy Theater tonight (9/7). Tickets are still available.
Like Kreator, Accept and Swallow the Sun both have a new LPs as well. Swallow the Sun's new LP Emerald Forest and the Blackbird hit this week via Spinefarm and is streaming in full at Decibel and below. Accept's Stalingrad, their second since reuniting in 2009, is out now via Nuclear Blast.
All listed tour dates, a video for Kreator's title track and that Swallow the Sun stream are below.

Snake of Voivod!
As Kreator took the stage to "Choir of the Dammed," you could feel the excitement and adrenaline building in the venue. The band played with dead on accuracy, flawlessly mixing favorites from all eras to celebrate their 25th year in existence. There was extensive headbanging and a barrage of devil horns being thrown by the masses all night long. During the night, Mille informed us that after this leg of the tour, Kreator are heading back to Europe to do some summer festivals and then Kreator will get working on a new album.A veritable thrash-topia converged at Nokia Theater on 3/6 when legends Kreator shared the stage with Voivod, Evile, Lazarus AD, and the not-thrash-but-still-great Nachtmystium. The show was part of an ongoing tour for the thrash legends, which will terminate soon and culminate in Voivod taking on Austin during SxSW. The band is scheduled to play the official Relapse showcase on 3/17 at Red 7 but will also play the BrooklynVegan/M for Montreal party at Galaxy Room on 3/20 (at the same time as our Red 7 party... decisions).
Kreator played roughly an hour and twenty minutes and as the night came to a close, Mille had every voice in the venue bellowing "HATE" to introduce 'Flag of Hate" because when in New York at a Kreator concert on a Saturday night, how else do you show appreciation for the German Thrash veterans? - [MetalMachine.net]

Dark Castle @ Union Pool (more by Sam Marble)
In recent months, the upswing in metal coverage on BV has rendered the moniker "Week In Metal" unnecessary. Small blurbs in "WIM" (as we call it around here) about Dark Castle have given way to photosets from their shows and posting of tour dates as they happen. Chalk it up to progress.
Starting this week, we will introduce a bit of a new direction for the old Week In Metal column, but without straying too far from the previous. The new column, entitled Short Wave Warfare, will scale back a bit, focusing on news that falls below the radar as well as shining a spotlight on new bands and upcoming shows in the NYC area. It won't be weekly. I hope you enjoy it.
Stay tuned for more upcoming shows in addition to Coalesce at Europa, Magrudergrind at Cake Shop, and The Hope Conspiracy at Union Pool, as well as a year-end best of 2009 post from myself and some of my favorite artists.
Thanks for reading. News on Portal, Oxbow, Master's Hammer, a collaboration between sunn O))) and Ulver, a new Haiyaino Daisuki & Gridlink, Amenra, Earthride, Kreator, Mammoth Grinder and so much more as (the new) Short Wave Warfare continues below....

Orcustus, a vile and caustic black metal crew that at one point featured Infernus and Tormentor of Gorogoroth, have released their long-time-coming LP via Southern Lord. Try and choke back the vomit while you check out "Asphyxiokenisis" above, and pick up the LP here.
While we're on the BM tip, a misanthrope who released my second favorite record of last year, Leviathan, has dropped a new split entitled Sic luceat lux with Greek black metallers Acherontas. Pick it up at Zyklon-B Productions.
Converge is currently in the studio recording their new album, fingers perched with on twitter. Meanwhile, Nate of Converge dropped some details on the new Doomriders record, Darkness Come Alive, which he professes to be "not as [much of a] party record" and a "little more serious". More in an interview here.
Speaking of Doomriders, Boston's Disappearer (also featuring Jebb Riley) have released The Clearing on Magic Bullet Records in CD and 2LP formats. Pick it up here, and dig on the MP3 for "A Skull Full Of Bats" above!
20 Buck Spin is repressing one of their greatest releases, the Graves At Sea / Asunder split. Pick that up here.
Black Arrows of Filth & Impurity. I know, the name is kind of a mouthful... but the names of the bands that are associated with this death/grind/ambient crew are pretty common around these parts: Demiricous, The Dream Is Dead, and Racebannon. BAOFAI drop their new album 1984 (Eternal) on Gilead Media and are streaming four tracks at their myspace, but have dropped off "Damn, Girlfriend, That Napalm Exfoliates As It Burns" and "If Shit Were Gold, The Poor Wouldn't Have Assholes" above! Pick up 1984 (Eternal) here.
Call me a loyalist, but I had the feeling that after being somewhat disappointed by In The Absence Of Truth, Isis would come back as strong as ever. Make sure and check out Wavering Radiant on May 5th or now, if you are a record fiend or feel like streaming it all at their myspace. Look for Isis at Irving Plaza on June 2nd with Tombs & Pelican (tickets here), and check out the video for "Holy Tears" below!
That video, Subrig Destroyer, Beherit, Velvet Cacoon, sunn 0))), Nattefrost, and more, as This Week in Metal continues!

Let us all give thanks to Crowpath. For it is on November 25th, that the Swedes will brutalize us at the highly chaotic crossroads of brutal grind, death, doom, and hardcore with their new album One with Filth. The eleven-track LP One With Filth is currently up for preorder with a shirt at Willowtip Records, but you can download THREE of those tracks above, including "The Deed" available only here!
How can it get any better? Maryland Deathfest have added Napalm Death, Venomous Concept, and Misery Index to the already STELLAR lineup which includes the mighty Bolt Thrower. Tickets for Maryland Deathfest are on sale.
As we discussed last week, the mighty Graf Orlock have a new record on the way, Destination Time Today. The third installment in their cinemagrind trilogy, da Graf have been (un)kind enough to hook us BV'ers up with the new jam "Run Over By A Truck", downloadable above!
Ocean (of Maine) drops their new record, the two-track Pantheon Of The Lesser on Important Records on 11/11... check out the pair of MP3 excerpts available for download above. Likey? Pick it up right cheah...
Trap Them's massive new album Seizures In Barren Praise and the domestic issue of Carpathian's Isolation is out NOW via Deathwish Records. Broke/cheap & want 'em both? Email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Trap Them) and win BOTH CDs or BOTH LPs! Include your first and last name, your preference in format (CD or LP)... winners will be selected at random and contacted. Meanwhile, get your listen on at Hardcore Night's Trap Them Listening Party "and Beer Chugging Contest" (awesome) at The Charleston on 11/13.. flyer is below. Trap Them also was interviewed by Crustcake and sat in at WNYU! Download it here (forward to the 27 min mark).
Italian me(n)tal pantients Cripple Bastards dropped their new grinder Variante Alla Morte on FETO Records (owned by Shane Embury and Mick Kenney). Check out "Sangue Chiama", one of the few tracks over 30 seconds long (hell, over 10 seconds long), available for download above!
Neurosis have announced a few new new bands for the Beyond The Pale event at Roadburn 2009 including Om, Six Organs Of Admitttance, Skullflower, and A Storm Of Light! Hmmm, Wino is at Roadburn with Saint Vitus, Scott Kelly of Neurosis is obviously there, and now Al Cisneros from Om is on board.... thats 3/4 of Shrinebuilder... we'll keep you posted for new additions as come up! As originally discussed in February, Scott "Wino" Weinrich has a new solo album in the works... but now it has a name and a date! Look for the new album, Punctuated Equilibrium on Jan 20th 2009, and check out the album art!

Lords... and they're angry! Typocracy)
I bid you good day kind sir and m'lady! May I also say Fuck All Y'all Motherfuckers! That is definitely one album that I have had on blast all this week... the new record by spazzy Louisville hardcore freaks, Lords! Check out "Blasphemy Act" from Fuck All Y'all... currently streaming over at their myspace. Of course it isn't all gravy for dem Kentucky boys. Let's cut to the chase:
Matt Jaha will not be playing bass in the band anymore, and rather than cancel the upcoming tour Eric and I decided to do it as a two piece...I just get some more amps to make up for the bass...Check out the long version for a tale that includes flailing fists, and flying guitar cabinets. The band is searching for a suitable replacement who must "be able to play the songs". Sounds reasonable. Best of luck, my dudes.
The mighty Anaal Nathrakh have finished writing their new album, the follow-up to the critically-lauded Hell is Empty, and All the Devils are Here from 2007! Mick Kenney is currently shaping the songs in the studio and hopes to have V.I.T.R.I.O.L.'s vocals done in February for an album release in June of 2009...
Deathwish has signed one of my favorite crusty European bands, Victims! Look for the band to re-release Killer on Deathwish later this year.
As we discussed earlier, Jarboe dropped Mahakali while Early Man dropped Beware The Circling Fin on The End Records. Want 'em both? Email BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Early Jarboe) and win one of three sets of BOTH the Early Man EP on 10" vinyl and the Jarboe CD. Include your first and last name, winners will be contacted. Meanwhile, dig on Jarboe's "The House of Void" available for download above.
Watain LIVE from The Knitting Factory, Slayer, The Hellacopters, Genghis Tron, Cynic & The Sword, all as This Week In Metal continues....
We kick things off with the reunited prog-death of Cynic and their new record, Traced In Air, due on Season of Mist on Oct 28th. Traced In Air is Cynic's first album in 15 years, since the release of the now cult classic Focus. Comprised of founders Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert, both members of the legendary Human-era Death members, "Integral Birth" (downloadable above) is the first song to emerge from Traced In Air. Metalkult has posted a pretty extensive interview with Paul of Cynic.
Darkthrone have posted a new song from their upcoming album Dark Thrones and Black Flags, due Oct 20th on Peaceville. The record will be released on three formats: a regular edition in jewel case, a vinyl edition, and a special edition in a slipcased jewel case package with exclusive new video footage. Check out "Hiking Metal Punks" available for download above and head on over to their mini-site to stream two others!
Keelhaul have announced a handful of midwest & southern dates, though no NYC dates so far. The band is currently working on new material for a new record, the follow up to 2006's massive Subject To Change Without Notice, "and quite possibly a dvd". No word as to the details of when that record would emerge but when pressed, the band offered that they "are old & slow".
Doomriders & Disfear will team up for a split seven-inch available via Deathwish Records. A "Tour Edition" of the split will be available from the bands during their upcoming European tour with SSS, but the rest of us will have to wait for the preorder. Doomriders have a new album due next year.

Gojira's The Way Of All Flesh
Gojira has finally announced news on it's latest punch to the gut, The Way of All Flesh! The much anticipated follow-up to From Mars to Sirius will drop on October 13th on Prosthetic, and look for the band to hit Europe with In Flames in late Sept/Oct (tour dates below). Joe Duplantier played on the Cavalera Conspiracy album, who recently played Irving Plaza with The Dillinger Escape Plan.
As we discussed before, Intronaut are on tour with Behold The Arctopus and Mouth Of The Architect (Deadsea and Wetnurse are also on the colossal NYC bill), packin heat from the forthcoming Prehistoricisms on Sept 16th. Check out "The Literal Black Cloud", available for download above!
KEN mode dropped their new record, Mennonite on their own label, Arctodus Records. Pick it up here. The follow-up to their 2006 release on Escape Artist, Reprisal, KEN mode draws from the glory days of Am-Rep and noise punk, adding a brute force Mastodon-type approach. We have "The Romanticist" from Mennonite available for download above, but be careful, it's mean & nasty.
much, much more below...
