"An aggregate 225,000 people bought tickets to see a [Coachella] roster headlined by Jay-Z, Muse and Gorillaz during the April 16-18 event at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio.The 2010 edition of Coachella actually began excactly one week ago today, and we already posted full picture sets from: DAY ONE, DAY TWO and DAY THREE. Now here is one last group that contains unposted outtakes from all three...
The previous attendance record was set in 2007, when the headliners included a reunited Rage Against the Machine. Final figures are still being tallied, but AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips said the gross will exceed $20 million.
Phillips said the future looked bleak for AEG Live's nascent All Points West festival, which took place in 2008 and 2009 across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J.
"We're probably going to kill it," said Phillips. "As beautiful as (the site) is, it's very hard to get New Yorkers to cross that river. All Points West is an experiment that just didn't work." [Reuters]

This year, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival reveals that tattoos are more ubiquitous among social scenes than ever before. A walking museum of quotes and legendary faces from Jesus to Michael Jackson decorates the backs, shoulders, calves and fingers of people fashionably reliving their favorite historical decades at this heat-stroke inducing music marathon.
I thought Wale didn't show up, but later found out that he showed up late. Baroness demonstrated the art of rocking out at least three to five times before each song reached a satisfied climax. Metal can be a real turn on, especially surrounded by sweaty good-looking people. Deer Tick performed an R+B version of "Ashamed" followed by John McCauley caressing his nipples. LA band Iglu and Hartly had enthusiasm, but is this Mickey Avalon without the drugs and prostitutes? Which leaves what? Sleigh Bells began with a booty melting bass line palpable from the VIP section across the field, soon overtaken by hipster hop metal pop for people that like beaches and children. The Avett Brothers made an exciting second Coachella appearance on the Outdoor Stage. Two years ago, the band played Sunday gospel time, all manners and simplicity, but the Bros returned with a full band, and a few thousand people singing every word, stomping to the banjo, and hugging during the sweet parts. The banjo will take over America. Just wait. Country music is infiltrating avant-garde and above ground indie worlds alike.
Standing midway between the big stages, just a few feet from yet another girl with the words "Have u seen my friend Molly?" scrawled on her back, the Avett Brothers' heart-wrenching "January Wedding" got a reggaeton remix from Calle 13 booming on the Main Stage. This Puerto Rican dancefloor marvel used a tea kettle for a mic effect, and taught the audience to say "No me jodas las pelotas" against negativity ("Don't fuck my balls"). Speaking of balls, Yeasayer's crowd went absolutely nuts screaming, but the guys barely seemed aware, transported as they were to some space station cloud. The harmonies rocked like angelic aliens-but, smile, guys. Hockey demonstrated a genuine interest in moving indie rock standards forward, especially attracting the PG-13 festival contingency. M. ward raspy singing "Roll Over Beethoven" during She & Him's set delivered tingly shivers, but Zooey Deschanel's approach to "I Put A Spell On You" did not crumble souls. Her jazzy voice and bouncy energy otherwise made for a good time that elicited repetitive shouts of "I Love You!" from the first row.
Music should be at least marginally weird or infinitely classic, but Tom Morello's band, Street Sweeper Social Club, brings nothing new to either category and so seems a waste of great musicians. Get weird or the future will never arrive. That being said, the musicians Coachella digs up from history often present the most exciting moments. Rock steady ska pioneers The Specials sent a crispy, warm message to Rudy that every witness appreciated immensely, but it was outrageous that barely any photographers showed up for Gil Scott-Heron's smooth, soulful set [editor's note: ours did!]. The man is partly responsible for getting Martin Luther King, Jr. a holiday, godfathered hip hop, and that doesn't merit attention? A large crowd attended his every word, but the photos won't show it. Later on, James Murphy screamed Gil Scott-Heron's name during "Losing My Edge" as if it were the name of God. Glad he gets it. LCD Soundsystem's first single in 2002, "Losing My Edge" is a historical document worth preserving for the ages, an essence that speaks to what Coachella seems bent on capturing and rewriting every year. Echo & The Bunnymen rode the high-hat zealously-as many have copied since-giving chapped lips sugar kisses. Public Image, Ltd., could not take Jay-Z's audience away from him nor unglue Fever Ray fans from Karin Dreijer Andersson's encompassing fog spell, but I'll be damned if PiL wasn't the best show all day. John Lydon's hair stood on edge and he rolled his rrrr's heroically. His gang of old men put the good junk in post-punk.
As this first 12 hour music summary comes to a close, a few acts remain worth giving a hoot about. Grizzly Bear's hypnotic power hardly needs mentioning and Vampire Weekend knows you love "Horchata." New cool La Roux magnetizes with a disco flavor that Anita Ward might approve. As hoped, Little Dragon's gentle fire breathing soul pop fronted by Yukimi's sexy voice and adorable stage presence comes in as Friday's second favorite. The music's weird enough, bent on discovering surprises. One-woman band Imogen Heap, as well, is the queen of surprises. She moves around her instruments, looping this and dubbing that as if casually mixing a magic potion or prepping a sandwich. Jay-Z's "On To The Next One" is an appropriate theme song for the attention span needed to get your money's worth at Coachella. And then Beyonce came out. We all bowed down before her short shorts.
Them Crooked Vultures, Passion Pit, Dillinger Escape Plan, Yo Gabba Gabba, and The Whitest Boy Alive also played sets on Friday. The Cribs were among those who could not. I felt it and just stood still to see if my mind was playing tricks on me but the floor was taking me up and down on its own. and only the people in the front right were really jumping and dancing. if the entire venue was jumping and dancing i wonder how the floor would have moved." [Anonymous]If I wasn't having so much trouble keeping my eyes open right now, I would write more about how excellent last night's (4/12) Webster Hall show was. I might attempt to compare it more to the life-changing (don't get mad at me for being overly excited and slightly exaggerating) event that was Thursday's gig at Music Hall of Williamsburg, but let's just say that Webster Hall was also awesome, but different due to the band opening with the new song "Pow Wow" off the new leaked album that a less-drunk (which is a good or bad thing depending on your point of view) James Murphy begged the crowd not to leak (it leaked just a few hours earlier) from the stage. Pow Wow was one of three new songs they played, but the only one they were playing for the first time (they also played Drunk Girls and I Can Change at Music Hall). I almost didn't go to Webster Hall because I didn't want to be disappointed, but then I couldn't resist and I'm glad I did.
Next up for the band is Coachella followed by a tour and then three shows at Terminal 5 (I'm definitely going to at least one of those) (and then more touring). The setlist and more pictures from Webster Hall, below...

Modest Mouse will join Faith No More and Nas & Damian Marley (tickets) as one of the acts set to play at Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn this summer. Their Friday, July 23rd show will be ticketed/non-free (like the others mentioned). Tickets go on sale Friday at noon (which is when the just-added Faith no More show goes on sale too).
Modest Mouse's Brooklyn show is a week after they play the Pitchfork Festival which recently updated its lineup. New acts playing the Chicago fest include Big Boi, Major Lazer, Neon Indian, Beach House, Free Energy, Local Natives, Robyn & more. Check that out in full below. Single day tickets are still on sale.
UPDATE: Modest Mouse's Brooklyn show is one day after they play one in NJ.
Modest Mouse will be reissuing their third album, The Moon & Antarctica, on vinyl for its 10th anniversary, on Record Store Day - this Saturday, April 17th. "The album features restored original artwork and replicates the infinite lock groove found in the original vinyl pressings of 2000. The new vinyl reissue includes a download card for the album." "There's good news and bad news. The good news is we're here. The bad news is I'm wasted." James Murphy, who claimed to be swilling his "special drink" (champagne and whiskey) all night, kept trying to set the bar low for last night's LCD Soundsystem show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, the first the band has played in three years... a fact that he kept hammering into the crowd. "This is the longest we haven't played in the history of the band. It's not really a 'show,' it's a live rehearsal."
He was right, technically. Not only was it the live debut of new material from LCD's upcoming third album, This Is Happening, but also the first for the new six-piece (at times seven) version of the band, still anchored around the core of Murphy, keyboardist Nancy Whang and drummer Pat Mahoney. All of Murphy's hemming and hawing was for nought. This is contender for show of the year. LCD Soundsystem blew the lid off the joint for almost two hours.
The band mostly ignored the new album. "I made a conscious decision not to play too much of the new stuff in the early part of the tour," Murphy said. "I remember being a kid taking the train two hours just to hear 'This Charming Man' only to get 'Panic." (Of all the things to be jealous of, Murphy also saw the Smiths.) Instead we were treated to a cavalcade of hits including "Your City's a Sucker," "Tribulations," "All My Friends," "Losing My Edge," "Yeah," "Someone Great," and show-closer "New York, I Love You."
Only two new songs were played. The VU-meets-Bowie first single "Drunk Girls" and what will surely be the second single, "I Can Change" that is more Gary Numan or Eurythmics (you can hum "Love is a Stranger" to it). The latter was more successful, though I think "Drunk Girls" is gonna turn into a big summer single once people hear it spun in a club at maximum volume. I wish they'd have played a couple more tunes, especially the Roxy/Eno-ish rocker "All I Want" but we'll get those in time.
Seriously, no complaints at all. The crowd was going mental for the last half of the 90-plus minute set, especially during "Yeah" and "Someone Great." Maybe too mental. After an early attempt at a mosh pit, Murphy and Whang put the kybosh on such behavior. "If you're dancing and not within two people of a girl," Whang explained. "You're doing it wrong." Murphy added, "Dance up and down!" In addition to the crowd, the stage was packed on the side like a hip hop show, including Hot Chip's Al Doyle who was LCD's touring guitarist on previous excursions.
Murphy must've reminded us ten times that this was LCD's first show in ages and they were under-rehearsed. (Though I heard they used MHoW as a practice space all week.) But clearly New York had missed LCD Soundsystem. And they missed playing. Three years was definitely too long. But, thankfully, absolutely, they haven't lost their edge.
Light Asylum were a great opener and sounded booming on the Music Hall sound system. Bill said they're like a goth Yaz. I just wish they would showcase Shannon Funchess's frontwoman abilities more. She used to shine when she was on stage with !!!. She later joined LCD for a bit during "Someone Great", but mostly just in the background. Before she left the stage James gave her a great big bear hug.
Murphy pointed out that he was 40 years old "which means every show I saw had Fishbone opening". That was a nice intentional-or-not intro to "Losing my Edge".
The crowd really was moving all night. The closest thing to a mosh pit came during the punk rock "Movement", and there was a bit of a fight near the stage earlier in the night (I think because someone thought people were being too rowdy).
The lasers all over the walls and ceiling during "Yeah" were the coolest thing I ever saw visually happen at Music Hall.
Though the band took an encore break before "Someone Great", James announced before leaving the stage that it wasn't an "encore" because in NY aka home, we don't have encores. They're for "other places". Nancy moved from her keyboard to a piano for the show-closing "New York I Love You".
Definitely the show of the year (so far).

More tickets go on sale at 4pm for tonight's LCD Soundsystem show at Music Hall of Williamsburg. If you don't get in, don't worry I hear there may be another show in NYC after tonight and before Coachella.

Ticketmaster is being screwy. Some people can get LCD Soundsystem tickets. Some can't. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why except that I think Ticketmaster screws up when they list a show a few minutes before it goes on sale. When a show gets listed it has to pass through their zillion identical servers and it isn't on all of them yet.

Tickets went on sale at midnight for May 20th and May 21st LCD Soundsystem shows at NYC's Terminal 5. A new song "Drunk Girls", ("the first single from the third and final LCD Soundsystem album. The as yet titled album is due out May 17th on DFA and Parlophone"), can be heard in the video below...
LCD Soundsystem has confirmed May 18 as the U.S release date of its as yet untitled third album. The record will be released on DFA/Virgin in the U.S. and will consist of the [the songs listed below]:One of those other festival dates is the just-announced Camp Bisco. The record's release will be supported by a world tour beginning with an April 16 penultimate slot at the Coachella festival in Indio CA and continuing with a run of UK/Europe headline dates (several of which have sold out well in advance and necessitated added dates) and further worldwide festival appearances.

the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival will be held at Chicago's Union Park on July 16 - 18. We are pleased to announce the first batch of bands slated to perform, as well as proclaim that tickets are on sale today at 12 PM CST! This year's festival welcomes the highly anticipated return of legendary band Pavement as they make one of their first appearances since reuniting! Pavement will perform on Sunday night. Friday features indie-rock, chart-topping mainstays Modest Mouse, while Saturday and Sunday sees performances by LCD Soundsystem, Raekwon, Here We Go Magic, St. Vincent, Lightning Bolt, Cass McCombs and Sleigh Bells. Electro-pop duo YACHT will be going on tour this February/March with Bobby Birdman. One of the only announced US dates (vs. Canada) will be at NYC's Bowery Ballroom on Thursday, March 11th with MNDR. Tickets go on sale Wednesday at noon.
YACHT's 2009 DFA album See Mystery Lights brought them on tour around the world (and to IFC's Dinner with the Band). They made video diaries of most trips - China, South Korea and Brazil are below.

Daft Punk's first album had helped refresh house music in the mid 1990s; the second went further, rewriting electronic pop's pleasure principles to such a degree that when it came out a lot of people thought Discovery must be a put-on. They took the joy in the record for irony. Rather, the band had simply plunged into the raw popstuff of their 70s childhoods, from AOR to disco, Buggles to Manilow, rock to robotics. They wanted their listeners to get the rush of context-free delight they had hearing music as kids, and on "Aerodynamic" and "Digital Love" they succeeded wildly, dissolving a decade-plus of dance music good taste. And not all of Discovery looked back. The middle of the album is house music as string theory, with the duo finding dimensions of pleasure coiled within the tiniest loops: "Crescendolls" releases an awesome, gleeful energy by repeatedly triggering one five-second sample.Daft Punk grabbed the #3 spot on Pitchfork's list of the Top 200 albums of the 2000s (now fully announced) (yesterday they were only up to #21). The top 20 are also listed below...
Discovery was simply the decade's best good-times record, with Daft Punk as pyramid-toting party wizards and the chipmunk Kraftwerk of "Harder Better Faster Stronger" their anthem. But this most celebratory of records has a bittersweet streak, too: Daft Punk know that a rush always carries the risk of exhaustion. Perhaps the album's most underappreciated track is the sad but gorgeous "Short Circuit", a three-minute robot graveyard of crumbled transistors and dying LEDs. But from Romanthony's first blissful, vocoded shout of "one more time!" the dominant emotion on Discovery is joy. A joy that wasn't afraid to be sentimental and funny as well as hard and futuristic, and is all the better for that. When a generation looks back and tries to catch a fuzzy hold of the music that made them happy this decade, Daft Punk's will be top of the list. --Tom Ewing [Pitchfork]

Causes 1 is out now and has tracks by Animal Collective, Bloc Party, Death Cab, Spoon, The Shins, Bright Eyes, Cornelius and many others.
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and the Decemberists are also among the artists who contributed to Dark Was the Night, a new comp to benefit the Red Hot Organization which will be released in February.

A news article has appeared here and elsewhere, quoting me as saying that LCD Soundsystem is over, or that they have split up. I would like to clarify that LCD have not disbanded, nor could the entity be disbanded in the sense that it has always had a revolving cast of players - it would be like saying that The Fall had disbanded, or Prince has split up. LCD Soundsystem is James Murphy, and he's allowed to take time off, do other things, and come back, or not come back. And he doesn't have to tell you or anyone else about it. I didn't know if anything was going on with LCD next year, which is the truth, and that's all I should have said, but I gabbled on a bit because that's the way I am and I didn't imagine in million years that anyone would concoct a story out of it... Anyway, I should probably stop doing interviews after this, which is already my second chance. But the main point to take away is that more LCD music is in the pipeline, which is surely good news for everybody. [Hot Chip's Website]

LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy has revealed that he is involved in a new band who are set to release material on his label, DFA.Pat Maloney?? (like I should talk). James and Pat are also collectively known as Special Disco Version, and............
Murphy told NME.COM that the collective, featuring LCD cohort Pat Maloney plus former Hockey Night members Paul Sprangers and Scott Wells, haven't decided on a name yet.
"There's this rock band arguing about what name they are," Murphy told NME.COM. "They're from Minneapolis.
"We've gone back and forth for months, there's no way to say [what the band name is]. Pat and I are the drummer and the bass player [respectively]."
Murphy said he expected to release material by the new collective next year.
According to his spokesperson Murphy is not officially a core member of the band, although he produces and contributes bass.

"Dressed in a dark blazer and white pants (after Labor Day, mind you!), John MacLean looked more like a professor than a dance-rocker. Perhaps his fashion sense is a remnant from his days teaching English in New Hampshire? Following a set from Chairlift, a Brooklyn-based trio whose career received a kick-start after Apple licensed "Bruises" for an iPod commercial, their fleeting allusions to Television and Bjork were bulldozed by The Juan MacLean's dance floor pastiche and their fondness for disco, house, and techno. Though MacLean's vocals sounded a little off at times (probably due to technical problems), when he's not singing and playing keyboards, he's constantly adding hand percussion and tweaking gizmos that give his music an interesting effect. Most notably, the icy vocal of singer/keyboardist Nancy Whang (of LCD Soundsystem) is a perfect yin to MacLean's yang. Their union shined on "Give Me Every Little Thing," a throbbing, squelchy, funky number laden with Theremin. Thankfully void of needless irony, it tipped its hat to Parliament-Funkadelic. Along the way, they dropped "Happy House," the first single from their forthcoming album, The Future Will Come, and it was a definite highlight. If tonight's performance is any indication, the future for The Juan MacLean looks very bright." The Juan Maclean came on late closing out the DFA showcase...around 12:45- 1? John/Juan the man and his trusty troupe, including Nancy Whang and ex-!!! drummer Jerry Fuchs, brought dance chaos to the cold concrete floor of Santos. He oscilalted between a smorgasbord of samplers, tambourines, and modern electronic gadgets....and tastetested a track from upcoming album, The Future Will Come. Crazed lights and lasers added to the otherworld sci-fi vibe (that and the pills that were going around)... -FaithFree Blood (featuring ex-!!!'s John Pugh) was also on the Santos bill.

'Special Disco Version' is an old term for a dance interpretation of a pop song, now known as a remix. It was frequently printed on a circular sticker and slapped on the record's sleeve, left for Murphy and Mahoney to discover 30 years later as they plumbed the bins at New York record stores. SDV the party will bring back such gems - some of which are more rock than dance, and more minimal than orchestral - to curious dance floors, and mix them with new material. The fresh blend will rock the party in unprecedented ways, and offer LCD fans a new perspective on the musical roots of their favorite band.
'With SDV, I can keep experimenting with remixes that we're working on, I can keep playing new stuff, and I can keep finding old records,' says Murphy.
SDV's disco is The Bee Gees' 'You Should Be Dancin',' but not the original: The unreleased dub version. It's not Studio 54: It's The Loft, a NYC venue open at the same time, where the music was so much the focus that DJ David Mancuso would let songs finish in silence, rather than mix them into each other, so each could be appreciated on its own. It's Francis Grasso, the New York DJ who would blend Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin during marathon, 12-hour sets, and reportedly lived in his DJ booth at West Side club Salvation. 'How punk rock is that?' says Murphy."
