Dispirit at Rites of Darkness (more by BBG)

As discussed, I am currently in San Antonio, TX at Rites of Darkness preparing to see the likes of Zemial, Mournful Congregation, Midnight, Inquisition, Weapon, Demigod, and many more. Stay tuned to BV for pictures and daily reports from the festival. I will ALSO be live-tweeting the festival at my twitter as well.
After almost 30 years in existence, Onslaught have announced their first ever US tour, including a stop at Saint Vitus on April 7th. Support will come from M-Pire of Evil (mems Venom). Full tour schedule is below. THe band will reportedly be performing "an exclusive set list spanning through all their studio albums such as: Power From Hell, The Force, In Search Of Sanity, Killing Peace and their latest release Sounds Of Violence."
As we wind down for the year-end, Natur will present a holday gift to NYCers. Look for the recently-Earache-signed band to play a FREE show on 12/10 (Saturday) at Saint Vitus with La Otracina, Syphilitic Lust, and Ain't Rights. You must be 21+ to get in.
More suggested shows and some live video of Brainoil and Spazz (not together), below....

Danava at Acheron

Danava and Thrones completed a round of NYC dates over the weekend. They tagged Acheron on an icy Thursday night with Caltrop and Psychic Limb, and then hit Union Pool on Friday (10/28) with La Otracina & Ben von Wildenhaus (mem Federation X). Thrones, Danava, and La Otracina were then set to head out on the road together together, but were forced to cancel their Boston date at Midway Cafe the next night due to the freak snowfall that blanketed the Northeast, but resumed their tour in Providence last night (10/30) and are on their way north towards Portland, ME now. Full tour dates are below.
Thrones, Danava, La Otracina and Ben von Wildenhaus, aka the Friday lineup, ALL have new releases to celebrate. Thrones, aka Joe Preston, recently dropped a split with Sedan on his own Joe Preston's Solid Gold Records. La Otracina were literally assembling and selling their new Skyblazer 7" at the show, out now via In For The Kill Records. Ben von Wildenhaus released his new LP Great Melodies From Around this past Tuesday (10/25) via Riot Bear Recording Co. And of course, Danava's new LP is out now too.
Of the previously mentioned, only BvW has another NYC date in his near future, at Zebulon on Thursday (11/3) with Pure Horsehair and DJ Porkchop in celebration of Great Melodies From Around.
Pictures from Acheron and Union Pool, as well as video from Acheron, are below...

fireworks (more by Chris La Putt)

The 35th Annual Macy's 4th of July Fireworks returns to the West Side to delight New Yorkers and the nation with an awe-inspiring display of patriotic firepower. This year's extravaganza, "Gift of Freedom," will feature more than 40,000 fireworks expertly synchronized to a dynamic 25-minute score that includes a mix of American standards and the hottest pop favorites!Nick Lachey hosts the TV show which will feature performances by Brad Paisley & Beyoncé.Not in New York? Check out our entertainment
special on NBC, July 4th at 9 pm EST.
"The Fireworks can be viewed from any area with an unobstructed view of the sky above the Hudson River. For the best views, head to 12th Avenue below 59th Street at the following access points along 11th Avenue." Note that: The Westside Highway will be closed from 22nd Street to 59th Street beginning at 4:00 pm. You can also watch from NJ. I wouldn't recommend trying to see them from Brooklyn, though it may be possible if you get up high enough somewhere. One option for watching the fireworks is aboard a Rocks Off ship.
Unfortunately there will NOT be a free concert in Battery Park this year, not that last year's was anything special (for people over 5 years old anyway). There will not be a free show on Governors Island this year either. Last year they had a free She & Him show and a Rosanne Cash show too. This year the beach on Governors will be occupied by a not-free Pacha-presented dance party (part of the four-day Dance.Here.Now. Festival).
4th of July NYC show options are pretty slim in general this year, though Shea Stadium is hosting Summerjam III with Extreme Animals, Sightings, Liturgy, PC Worship, Hubble, La Otracina, Fuckton, In Buenos Aires, Dubknowdub, Black Ribbons, Future Shuttle, and more. Zebulon, Brooklyn Bowl and Barbes are all also open that day.
July 4th is a Monday though, and it's a Monday you probably have off of work (like Bowery Presents does -- all their clubs are closed that day). That means you can stay up late Sunday, July 3rd which is when Panda Bear plays Music Hall of Williamsburg, Tinsel Teeth are at Death By Audio, The Hairs play a free afternoon show at the South Street Seaport Fulton Market, Jaga Jazzist play Le Poisson Rouge, and the Feelies play their third of three Maxwell's shows.

La Otracina

With the band's new LP Reality Has Got to Die out today (9/21) via Holy Mountain, Brooklyn trio La Otracina (Adam Kriney, Evan Sobel, and Philippe Ortanez) played an album release show on 9/16 at Union Pool with help from Cloudland Canyon, Main Street Gospel, and Mondo Drag.
Says Kriney, "It's our first album to feature our current line-up and also the first to feature the new vocal-based music we have been working on, being that we were an instrumental band to begin with when we started. We're really excited about the musical dynamic throughout the album shifting between classic hard rock, early-metal, and prog, but also including forrays into free-jazz, cosmic synthesizer music, and even free-folk. We think this really represents the high level of musicality of the band and shows our ability to bring all of these seemingly disparate genres together in a seemless ball of connected sonic bliss. As I see it, LA OTRACINA does not play any 'type' of music, we play ALL music, and it just ends up sounding like US, no matter what style or genre we receive influence from. Lyrically, we're very excited that we can present themes to enhance the already sky-bound music to further destinations of mythological and fantastical worlds, creating poetry based on our own real experiences and our response to the insane world around us and our lives as artists struggling through it. So on many levels this album is a major work of catharsis for us and we are proud to share it with the listener in hopes that it will propel them into the future or past or whenever/wherever they'd like to be. Its a sweet ride mama, hold on."If you missed them due to being ravaged by The Body at Acheron or by the hurricane, never fear, the Brooklyn band is scheduled to play Cake Shop on 9/26 (SUNDAY) and (so far) 10/8 at a TBD Brooklyn venue with Dead Stars. Full tour itinerary, along with more pictures from Union Pool, below....

DOWNLOAD: La Otracina - "Raze The Sky" (MP3)

Incorporating elements of hard rock, punk, and metal, La Otracina still know how to lock into a heavy-psychedelic groove, and they do it well. The retro-leaning band will show off some of those XL riffs on a new LP Reality Has Got to Die out now digitally via Holy Mountain Records. Hard formats are due in September. Spacey but not meandering, gently melodic but with cojones, La Otracina pummel on burly tracks like "Raze The Sky" available for download above.
La Otracina's genetic make up is similarly awesome, featuring members of Titan, Children, and the dearly-departed Nebula (who played the BV day-party at Fontana's last year). The trio will show off their chops at a number of NYC shows in the coming weeks including Coco 66 Wednesday (7/28) with Telecult Powers & La Big Vic, August 27th at Union Pool with a killer teaming of Bezoar, Naam, and Wizardry, and September 16th at Union Pool with Mondo Drag and The Main Street Gospel. Full tour sked and some videos are below...

Future Islands at a BBQ show in 2009 (more by Sarahana)

You can almost count on one hand the shows happening this July 4th. She & Him, The Old 97s and Rosanne Cash all play free shows, while the Feelies hold fort a Maxwell's in Jersey. Add to those Shea Stadium's all-day BBQ show, that'll also be celebrating the one-year anniversary of its 20 Meadow Street location. The bands & genres range from black metal (via Liturgy) to 'minimalist funk' (courtesy of CSC Funk Band ) to sludge rock of La Otracina to synthy post-punk Future Islands (grab one of their songs above).
A flyer, more details and videos are below...

One look at their merch table (below) and you can tell that the Dysrhythmia boys are slightly busy. The story that it doesn't tell is all of the production projects that Colin Marston is taking on at Menegroth (his studio), the in-process Krallice LP, or the Gorguts reunion with fellow Dysrhythmia bandmate Kevin Hufnagel. With all of this on their plate, the NYC boys have decided "What the hey! Let's also headline a full US tour!" Sounds great guys. Full tour dates are below, including a string of dates with recent Show No Mercy / BV-BBG alumni STATS which culminates in their final show of the tour, Nov 1st at Union Pool.
Dysrhythmia are touring off of their new LP Psychic Maps, and played a record release party at Union Pool on July 18th. Pics from that show which included opener La Otracina, as well as a video of the band barreling through "Festival Of Popular Delusions", and all dates, below...
