Bey & Tay

Beyonce was seen just kind of chillin with Jay-Z at Monday night's Nets game at Barclays Center (where Taylor Swift is not playing) (that was a heads up for Stereogum). Maybe she was thinking about how she is the highest paid woman in music this year according to a new Forbes list which also includes Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift, who just made headlines for pulling all her music off Spotify (to make more money?), and who Kendrick Lamar covered, sort of:

Fashion Week
Fashion Week

Though the more pedestrian "Fashion's Night Out" ended in NYC in 2012, the more high brow New York Fashion Week continues year after year and is back upon us once more. As always, that means lots of parties we can't get into, with performances by some of our most loved and hated musical artists. This year, as PAPER lists out in a handy guide, includes shows by Kiesza (tonight at a party co-hosted by Sophia Lamar, The Misshapes, Mike Nouveau and more -- -flyer above), Jarvis Cocker (tonight as part of a big extravaganza in Madison Square Park with Sofia Coppola, Angela McCluskey, Kalup Linzy and more --- see flyer above and HERE), Banks (tonight and tomorrow), Maluca (tomorrow), Pharrell (maybe?), secret guests and more. Unfortunately almost everything is invite only, but where there's a will, there's a way?

Banks' upcoming show at Terminal 5 is also going to be hard to get into (sold out), but you can try to get in to the much-more-public-and-practically-free Banks in-store at Rough Trade in Brooklyn on 9/9.

Tickets are still on sale for the fun, annual Fashion Week-timed event Bushwig at Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn this weekend. Lots of DJs, wigs, drag performers, wigs, and more wigs.

Speaking of, Lady Gaga will make an appearance this week at the The Plaza Hotel for Bazaar, and it will be a "jazz performance".

Spike Jonze and Jonah Hill are also in on the fun. They "have teamed to produce and write a one-act play for the fall New York Fashion Week presentation of Opening Ceremony's Spring 2015 line."

What else is happening? Leave tips in the comments.

Terry Richardson & Sky Ferreira & Daft Punk & Tyler the Creator
Terry Richardson
Terry Richardson
Terry Richardson

Infamous photographer Terry Richardson was the subject of a cover story on last week's issue of New York Magazine titled "Is Terry Richardson an Artist or a Predator?" Since the article ran, a lot of models who have worked with Richardson have spoken out -- both for and against him. He shot Miley Cyrus you may remember and directed a Lady Gaga video starring R. Kelly that never got finished but created a firestorm of controversy when TMZ leaked footage from it.

Miley's tour-mate Sky Ferreira (no stranger to inappropriate behavior), who has been photographed by Richardson many times (he also directed her "Red Lips" video), took to Facebook today to defend the photographer. An excerpt:

I made a music video with him and I have never felt uncomfortable with Terry & had 99 percent of the creative control. This was before I was "famous". Allegations are one thing but completely blaming the director isn't fair aka the Lady Gaga video. It doesn't matter if you want to be a "role model" or not, it's your responsibility to be AWARE of what you're doing. When you're making & selling pop music for 14 year olds that is just a straight up fact. I'm not against/doubting people that have said they've encountered things with him (it's not my place to say so) but the media acting as if Terry Richardson manipulated Lady Gaga into making a video about getting touched by R-Kelly or whatever is a whole other thing. She is 28 year old woman & fully capable/aware of what she was doing. If she wants to do it is HER choice. Whether I agree with it or not. I'm REALLY insulted that my work is somehow getting dragged into this mess (this is the only place I can actually write about this). Terry has only been a supportive & caring friend to me for a long time. I actually find the whole thing upsetting & have for a while. To say I support sexual abuse beyond hurts me.
This is not the first time Sky used Facebook to write a long defense related to one of her videos. You can read the whole thing below.

In semi-related news, American Apparel founder Dov Charney was ousted from the CEO position by it's board of directors for "ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct."

Catch Sky live later this summer at the Surf Lodge in Montauk.

confetti rains at Lada Gaga's Roseland farewell, 4/7/2014 (photo by @talithaanne)
Roseland

Roseland this morning (photo via @sayitaintsosis)
Roseland

Roseland opened in New York in 1919 and hosted icons like Count Basie in the Thirties. It relocated to its 52nd Street home (a former skating rink called Gay Blades) in the late Fifties, where a display inside touted the number of couples who'd met there and married. In the Seventies and Eighties, the spot was a disco haven; in the Nineties its 3,500-capacity crowds moshed to Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Its next occupants will be a 59-story apartment building, according to the New Yorker.

As a Manhattan native, chances are Gaga has many connections to the club, but she didn't regale the crowd with any personal stories about transformative nights on Roseland's famously springy dance floor (she earlier told a reporter about a Franz Ferdinand show there during her senior year of high school where she broke her nose in the pit). Instead, she stuck to her usual self-empowerment lectures ("Do you love you? Then scream!") and spent an outsized amount of time bidding farewell to the female dancer who slithered across the stage with her for Artpop's squelchy bisexual romp "Sexx Dreams." - [Rolling Stone]

Lada Gaga's seven-show run at Roseland came to a close last night (4/7) and with it the end of one of New York City's most famous clubs which had been in its present location since 1958.

Roseland was also home to the annual, over-the-top gay dancefest The Black Party and The Village Voice has a cover story on it, the venue and the changing face (and location) of club culture in NYC:

Pevner scouted other venues, but the Black Party not only needs a dance floor large enough to accommodate thousands of people, but also an entire weekend to install its own soundsystem and light rigs. The Saint at Large, which has held the party at Roseland for a quarter century, had a two-year option extending through 2015. "I told my lawyer to write a letter to address that we employ a staff full-time to work on this," Pevner says, "and if you're going to renege, here's the settlement." Pevner insisted that Ginsberg keep the club open at least through the third weekend in March, the one nearest the vernal equinox, which the party celebrates. According to Pevner, "They didn't want to end with the Black Party." So Ginsberg ended up with a win-win: Gaga gets reams of publicity and the club goes out in a blaze of glory.

Still, serious dance enthusiasts will always remember the club more for its unobstructed quarter-acre dance floor than as a midsize concert venue. Everything about Roseland was outsize, right down to its 14 coat-check windows.

More than anything, Roseland's closing marks the most painful sign to date that New York City's big rooms have become an endangered species. That a luxury residential space will likely replace it confirms the main culprit: an insatiable appetite for upscale housing that has transformed Manhattan, from the financial district to Harlem and beyond -- what Fordham professor Mark Caldwell, author of New York Night: The Mystique and Its History, has called "galloping gentrification."

I saw a lot of shows at Roseland, though mostly in the '90s -- Blur, and Oasis come to mind and I got to go to the Rolling Stones show there in 2002. My last visit there was for Big Audio Dynamite in 2011. I was never crazy about seeing shows there, but I always dug the classic vibe. What shows did you see there?

Roseland, you'll be missed.

---

Portishead famously played their in the late 90s. I say famous because not only was it an exciting show at the time, the show was recorded for a live album and DVD. Watch the whole thing (via someone uploading it to YouTube), below...

As discussed, NYC venue Roseland Ballroom closes its doors this April. It was already announced that Lady Gaga would play four nights, but that's since been expanded to SIX nights, including March 28, 30, 31 and April 2, 4, and 6. It's also been confirmed that her April 6 show will in fact be the venue's last ever show. Tickets for all six nights go on sale Monday (11/25), and there's a currently ongoing (while it lasts) Citi Cardmember presale and Little Monsters presale. Lady Gaga

NYC's Roseland Ballroom is closing this April, and additions to the venue's final schedule keep popping up. One of those additions is Lady Gaga, who, like her collaborator Beyonce did in 2011, will play four nights at the intimate (for her standards) venue on March 28, 30, 31, and April 2. Tickets for those shows go on sale Monday (11/25) at 10 AM with a Citi Cardmember presale starting Friday (11/22) at 10 AM.

Lady Gaga, who just hosted and sang on Saturday Night Live last weekend, has a new album, ARTPOP, out now and you can listen to one of its singles, "Dope," along with Roseland's current schedule, below...

HAIM at Halloween '93 (via)
IMAGE

Saturday Night Live is back this week (11/2) with host Kerry Washington and musical guest Eminem (just ahead of the release of The Marshall Mathers LP 2). The show then takes two weekends off, returning November 16 with Lady Gaga, whose new album ARTPOP is out next week, and she'll pull double duty as both host and musical guest.

Both Eminem and Lady Gaga also play the YouTube Music Awards in NYC this month.

Then on November 23, Haim (who posted the old Halloween pic above on their Facebook yesterday) will be the musical guest and Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson will be the host. Earlier this month HAIM will play the soon-to-close Roseland Ballroom on November 11 as part of a VH1 event called "You Oughta Know In Concert" that also features Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sandé, Matt Nathanson, Lorde and The Lumineers. No tickets were sold -- it's being taped for a special that that will air 11/23 -- but you can watch it live online on 11/11 as it's being filmed, if that's how you want to spend your time. Details TBA. HAIM continue to tour like mad, and all dates are listed below.

Last weekend (10/26) Janelle Monáe was the musical guest (Ed Norton hosted) and if you missed her performances, you can watch them below, she was pretty terrific. You can also check out the spot-on Wes Anderson horror parody, The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders, below too.

2013 NYC Village Halloween Parade

After taking a year off due to Hurricane Sandy, the now-crowdfunded Halloween Parade returned to Greenwich Village this year with the theme of "Revival!"

Re-imagining our identity and Remaking ourselves in costume.

Show us your stuff!
There was a bit of rain, but that didn't stop the masses from showing their stuff. Constumes we saw included Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Michael Jackson, KISS, Obamacare, random excuses to be half naked, Pee Wee Herman, Devo, Captain Crunch, Batman, Michael Jackson, Instagram and even Lou Reed. Arcade Fire at MSG in 2010 (more by Jonathan Bayer)
Arcade Fire

If MTV still gets to have a music awards show, then surely YouTube should get one too right? Well this November, for the first year ever, there will be a YouTube Music Awards show, which was created with Spike Jonze.

The live event will take place in NYC on November 3 at Pier 36 with performances by Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire and Eminem, plus musicians who have gained recognition via Youtube, including Lindsey Stirling and Cdza, and more. The show will also stream live online.

The awards nominations will be announced in mid-October. More info here.

Arcade Fire have a new album on the way, and they were just in NYC to perform on SNL, after which an Arcade Fire special, "Here Comes the Night Time," aired on NBC.

Eminem also has a new LP on the way.

So does Lady Gaga, but first she releases a remix EP for its single "Applause" today (10/1), which features a remix from Purity Ring (who also appear on the new Danny Brown album). Stream their remix below.

Taylor Swift realizing *NSYNC appeared on stage
Taylor Swift

From many points in Brooklyn, one could look up and see the lit up blimp in the air hovering over the Barclays Center yesterday (8/25). It was where the overhead shots were being filmed during the pre-show which included the big crowds outside around the Brooklyn streets that MTV got closed down to create the red carpet for the VMAs....

A red carpet, set up on Dean Street near Flatbush Avenue, was completely invisible to many non-ticketed fans and the general public who were mainly cordoned in a pen at the Best Buy on Atlantic Avenue between Fort Greene Place and Sixth Avenue.

Another penned area, at Sixth Avenue and Bergen Street, gave a small group of fans a distant peek at the carpet, but it was still a full city block away.

"Obviously they can't let everyone in for security reasons, but we can't see anything at all," said Donna Hall, 28, who came from Queens. "I've been out here with my friends since 3 p.m. and we've been trying to find the best vantage point possible, but we settled here because at least we could see a glimpse of the red carpet. [DNA Info]

Meanwhile, during the ceremony, we got performances from Kanye West (playing "Blood on the Leaves," not "Black Skinhead"), Justin Timberlake (on-stage *NSYNC reunion included), Drake, Kendrick Lamar (joining Robin Thicke, who, um, palled around with Miley Cyrus on stage), Lady Gaga (playing her new EDM-inspired single), and more.

Daft Punk didn't perform, but they did walk the red carpet and sit in the audience in their masks which they also wore to present 'Best Female Music Video' with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. They also debuted part of the video for "Lose Yourself to Dance."

Vampire Weekend, who are headlining the Barclays Center in September, presented an award to One Direction.

Jay-Z and Beyonce were strangely nowhere to be found.

Eminem also pulled a Jay Z and announced his new album, MMLP2 (the sequel to 2000's Marshall Mathers LP), in a commercial that aired during the VMAs. The album was executive produced by Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin, and it's due out November 5. Meanwhile, the single, "Berserk," will drop this Tuesday (8/27).

And before it all began, Grimes co-hosted the Red Carpet Report. Who wore it better, Grimes or 2 Chainz?

If you watched, what did you think? Should Miley Cyrus stop being so trashy? Should Robin Thicke stop being so creepy? Should Kanye stop being so serious? Does Justin Timberlake have really long arms? Does anyone really care that *NSYNC showed up (for a minute and a half)? If you didn't watch, or need a refresher, some videos from the night are below...

Kanye West at Governors Ball 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Kanye West

As previously mentioned, this year, MTV's Video Music Awards will be taking place in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center on August 25. It was just announced that Kanye West will appearing at this year's VMAs to perform "Black Skinhead" off his recently released Yeezus. Lady Gaga will be performing as well, debuting her new single, "Applause" off her upcoming ARTPOP album, due out November 11. Admission to the VMAs is free, but do you need tickets. You can currently get free Pit tickets, though the other ticket options are all TBA. There's a Ticketmaster page for the event too, but no on-sale date is listed at the moment.

Nominees for this year's VMAs include Kendrick Lamar, Drake, A$AP Rocky, J. Cole, Beyonce, Miguel, Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu, The Weeknd, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Lion, Mumford & Sons, Vampire Weekend, Alt-J, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Flying Lotus, and more. Full list below.

Also, watch the video for "Black Skinhead," which uses similar elements to the visual that accompanies Kanye's live performances of the song, below...

Tame Impala at Terminal 5 in February (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Tame Impala

We know these kinds of listicles get published all the time, and that everyone will always find ways to argue them, but this one is kind of interesting. Rolling Stone published their '50 Greatest Live Acts Right Now' list, where they asked a panel of writers, industry figures, and artists, "who rules the road in 2013?" It's got much of the stuff you'd think Rolling Stone would have on this kind of list (like insisting The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen are still better live than basically anyone else in 2013), but there's still some surprises, like the inclusion of Tame Impala amongst mainly rock/pop stars.

If you wanna see if you agree with Rolling Stone's assertions, you can catch some of the artists who made their list in NYC soon, like Tame Impala, Fiona Apple, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, and more.

Check out the full list below...

Love Songs

Not to turn into Perez Hilton or anything, but the same day we get the news that Justin Timberlake, another pop star who actually puts out great music, is releasing new material, Beyonce announced on facebook that Destiny's Child have recorded their first original song in eight years and Pharrell produced it. The song will appear on Love Songs, the upcoming Destiny's Child compilation which is due out on January 29 via Sony Legacy and can be pre-ordered now. The tracklist is below.

In related news, Beyonce, who is about to perform at the Super Bowl on February 3, but not until after she sings the National Anthem at President Obama's inauguration ceremony on January 21, said in an interview with GQ that she'll have her new album out "as early as April" and will go on a world tour in support of it. The album may or may not include her rumored sequel to her collaboration with Lady Gaga, "Telephone." (And that song may or may not also feature Azealia Banks.)

The album will follow 2011's 4, much of which saw Beyonce stripping back her sound and pulling more from '70s soul than contemporary R&B, but it also contained "Countdown," which is up there as one of Beyonce's greatest pop singles, and just one of the greatest pop singles of recent years in general.

The video for "Countdown" and the video for Destiny's Child's "Survivor" below...

Rolling Stones w/ Lady Gaga at Prudential Center - 12/15/12 (via Sarah Neves)
Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones wrapped up their '50 and Counting' shows at Prudential Center in Newwark, NJ on Saturday (12/15), after playing the same venue two days earlier. They were joined by previously announced guests Lady Gaga on "Gimme Shelter," The Black Keys on a cover of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?", former Stone Mick Taylor on "Midnight Rambler," and Bruce Springsteen on "Tumbling Dice." In addition to those guests, John Mayer (who was a surprise guest at the first Prudential Center show) and Gary Clark Jr. (who was a guest at their Barclays Center show) joined the band for a cover of Don Nix's "Going Down," and The Choir of Trinity Wall Street again joined them for "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

Videos and setlist below...

Rolling Stones at Barclays Center - 12/8/12 (via Marie-Joelle Parent)
Stones

The Rolling Stones came to the US/NYC area for their first of four appearances here on Saturday for a Barclays Center show. Gary Clark Jr. and Mary J Blige joined them for that one, and the setlist (which you can see HERE) was pretty similar to their London shows. The Stones next play the huge Sandy benefit at MSG (12/12/12) and then head to Newark, NJ for two Prudential Center shows (12/13 and 12/15). The 12/15 will be streamed live and the Stones just revealed some pretty huge guests for that one: fellow 12/12/12 musician Bruce Springsteen, younger blues rock torchbearers The Black Keys, and megastar Lady Gaga.

In other news, NY Times posted a review of the Barclays Center show and here's an excerpt:

What is a Stones show? Musically, now that they're in their 50th year and a long time before now, it doesn't seem to be so much about the performances you're actually hearing in real time. It's an oldies show that can become a flickering re-enactment ritual: momentarily you hear a sound that's both well-worn and alive, with a huge amount of meaning attached to it -- it's almost always a guitar riff or a drum fill -- and then it's gone, pulled under into a more functional or starchier or sometimes sloppier passage. And visually it's about Mick Jagger's stamina. Saturday's show was the start of the American part of the Stones' "50 and Counting" tour; as long as he was on stage, during the show's two and a quarter hours, he never stopped. In running shoes and stretchy black clothes he bounced on his toes with knees slightly bent and swinging independently of each other, like a woman in high heels trying to walk in more than one direction.
You can check out a few videos from that show below.

Jack White has issued the following statement to correct an excerpt from his upcoming cover story in British Esquire that was taken completely out of context--and actually edited to change its original meaning--in an NME.com news post.

The original quote referred to the state of image-based celebrity in general was twisted by the NME who changed the original quote, tacking the words "Lady Gaga's music" on to the original quote--words Jack never actually said.

White commented in full:

I'd like to address the recent tabloidesque drama baiting by the press in regards to Lady Gaga. I never said anything about her music, or questioned the authenticity of her songs in any way. I was in a conversation about the drawbacks of image for the sake of image, and that it is popular nowadays to not question an image in front of you, but only to label it as "cool" or "weird" quickly and dispose of it. I don't like my comments about Lady Gaga's presentation being changed into some sort of negative critique of her music. If you're going to try to cause drama, at least get the quotes right. I think journalists should also be held accountable for what they say. Especially publications like the NME who put whatever words they feel like between two quotation marks and play it off as a quote. maybe somebody with more lawyers can take them to task, but I'll just use the internet and twitter instead. I also think that kind of tabloid drama encourages artists to not express their opinions in the press, and instead give polite soundbites that don't stimulate thought about creativity and the consumption of art in its many guises. Peace to lady gaga and I fully congratulate and compliment her on her championing of gay rights issues and the momentum it's given to help create change.

Thank you.

Mutal Core

Youtube commenter Annika Seffer writes:

Bjork sounds nothing like Gaga, and this video is unlike any Gaga video out there. Honestly, you ask for originality, but anyone who is original and unique and quirky and happens to use electronic beats is automatically a Lady Gaga clone. Her voice, music, and lyrics are totally different to Lady? Gaga. You should probably just go back to watching Lady Gaga and Muse videos as you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Lady Gaga pointed her Twitter followers toward a video that prominently features her own voice in the chorus of Kendrick Lamar's "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" off of his recently released good kid, m.A.A.d. city album, which Gaga was initially supposed to be featured on. Are you upset that she didn't make the cut? Find out for yourself by listening below.
