Faith No More
Faith No More

So much for needing to shake off any rust. Thursday at an uncomfortably packed Concord Music Hall, Faith No More picked up where it left off 18 years ago, the last time the avant-metal band toured North America and released an album.

Exploring extremes of loud and quiet, manic and mellow, sinister and auspicious as if venturing into such divisive territories constituted the norm, the quintet proved anything but conventional. Its diverse 80-minute set served as a constant reminder that the group's success in the 90s -- a run that included a major-label deal, hit albums and renowned videos -- remains as bizarre as its most innovative songs. Historically, the sort of artistic experimentalism practiced by Faith No More gets confined to the fringes. [Chicago Tribune]

The reunited Faith No More are currently on tour, having hit Chicago's Concord Music Hall this past Thursday (5/7) with Le Butcherettes. The above review and pictures in this post are of that show. Setlist below.

The tour comes to NYC this week for two sold-out Webster Hall shows (5/13 & 5/14), also with Le Butcherettes, and it returns for a much larger show on August 5 at MSG with Refused. Tickets for MSG are still available, and we're also giving away a pair on Facebook.

Faith No More's first album since 1997, Sol Invictus, comes out next week (5/19) via Reclamation/Ipecac, and it's now streaming in full on NPR.

Sludge vets Melvins are the subject of a new documentary, The Colossus of Destiny - A Melvins Tale, which is currently in production and directors Bob Hannam and Ryan Sutherby hope to have it ready to show in early 2016. If you'd like to help it along there's a newly-launched Kickstarter campaign for the film that is currently a little more than a third of the way to its $75k goal. Melvins note on Facebook, "It is their project and not ours, but it will be good." You can check out the trailer below.

In other news, Melvins (who released new LP Hold it In last year) will be on tour this summer and will play two NYC shows at Santos on June 29 & 30 with Le Butcherettes. We were originally told they would be playing their 2001 album, Electroretard (which is getting reissued on June 2 via Ipecac Recordings), in full but now it is unclear whether that's happening or not. What we do know: tickets to the 6/29 show and the 6/30 show go on sale Friday (3/13) at 10 AM but you can get them early via our BrooklynVegan presale which begins Wednesday (3/11) at 10 AM.

UPDATE: PRESALE PASSWORD HERE.

All dates are listed, along with the Electroretard stream and the documentary trailer, below...

Antemasque / Le Butcherettes
Antemasque

If all you know of Omar is the talented but quiet guy off to the side on all those ATDI reunion shows, that dude has been replaced by a beast wearing a guitar. Something about these news songs has lit a fire under him, and watching him shred was a sight to see. His work on "Dominoes Fall" was incredible, with its big Guitar Hero worthy solo being the standout moment of the show.

Cedric held up his end of the bargain, sounding pretty solid for a guy who spent the better part of his younger years screaming his lungs out. He still knows how to command an audience, still has those funky dance moves and still knows when to stop and let the crowd sing their hearts out. [Houston Press]

Following the end of the At the Drive-In reunion and the breakup of The Mars Volta, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López have joined forces for yet another band, Antemasque. That band put out their debut album this year and recently wrapped up a tour with Omar's pals Le Butcherettes in support of it. The tour hit NYC for three shows and also hit other cities including Houston (where the above review is from) and Chicago, where the pictures in this post are from.

At the Drive-In at Coachella 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
ATDI

Though Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's post-Mars Volta/At the Drive-In band Antemasque put out their debut album (featuring Flea) earlier this year, it's since been taken off the internet and will be "officially" released in October via Omar's Nadie Sound label. Also in October, the band will kick off a tour with Le Butcherettes, whose album featured production and bass playing from Omar and whose singer Teri Gender Bender was in Bosnian Rainbows with Omar. The tour hits NYC on November 8 at Brooklyn Bowl and November 9 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for B Bowl and Bowery go on sale Wednesday (8/27) at 10 AM.

All dates are listed, with a recent live video, below...

Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 3
Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 3

"The second weekend brought record heat. Festival-goers jockeyed for patches of grass around the shaded perimeters. They pounded frozen lemonade at $6 a cup.

"It feels like a different world from last weekend," The Shins frontman James Mercer said. "It was Iceland last week."

While the weather forced some practical fashion choices, Coachella's sartorial influence was noted well beyond Indio. Joan Rivers and Kelly Osbourne debated Coachella-inspired fashion trends, and the wider cultural significance of the festival, on the E! Channel program, "The Fashion Police."

Osbourne, a Coachella regular, proclaimed, "When you go to Coachella, all the girls are half-naked and 22." Rivers, who joked that she goes to Coachella, too, quipped, "If David Hasselhoff was there, this means officially Coachella is no longer cool."" [MYDesert.com]

How was your Coachella?

After DJing a party on Friday night and headlining with his band Radiohead on Saturday, Thom Yorke kept busy on Sunday by DJing a Rolling Stone pool party with Nigel Godrich, and then showing up as a not-so-surprise, special guest during Modeselektor's Sunday night set in the Mojave tent while Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg headlined the main Coachella stage.

Blood Red Shoes @ MHOW
Blood Red Shoes

After Chris left the BV Loft Party all the way back on Friday, October 22nd, he headed over to Music Hall of Williamsburg for the Blue Flowers-presented CMJ showcase for a lineup of mostly UK bands including Chapel Club, Everything Everything, and Blood Red Shoes (who toured North America with Sky Larkin in October). Pictures from that show are in this post.

The occasion (to post these belated pics)? SXSW has already announced an initial lineup of bands playing in Austin from March 16-20, 2011, and Chapel Club is on that list (and I wouldn't be surprised of the other 2 mentioned bands end up coming too). Also on the list: Lia Ices, Braids, Asobi Seksu, Wye Oak, Suuns, Sun Airway, A Place to Bury Strangers and more. Full list under the rest of the MHOW pictures, below...
