Prince

Did Prince pull the ultimate con? Maceo (who played with Prince again at Madison Square Garden last night) and Questlove (who was at the Prince show at MSG again last night, tweeting pictures of his co-worker Jimmy Fallon dancing on stage with Prince) were both on the bill of a late-night show at Brooklyn Bowl last night. The Brooklyn Bowl show was set to run later than Prince's MSG show and rumors spread that Prince would play the Brooklyn Bowl show too (the bill even said "very special guests"). Prince is known for playing late-night shows after his main shows. The rumor not only made sense, it worked. Brooklyn Bowl was packed with Prince fans still waiting after 1am for the purple one to appear on stage.

Apparently it even said "Maybe Prince?" on Maceo's setlist. Maybe Maceo didn't even know if he would show up, or maybe he was in on it. Either way, by 1:15am word started to spread that Prince couldn't be playing at Brooklyn Bowl because he had arrived at the (groupie-free?) real afterparty at the Darby on 14th St in Manhattan. Those who ended up seeing Brooklyn Bowl headliner and jam band Lettuce and Dr. John instead of Prince can at least take solace in the fact that Prince didn't actually perform at Darby, though MSG opener Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings did (and of course Questlove was there to see that too).

MTVu Woodies 2009

Indie darlings Matt & Kim kicked off the show -- which celebrates the year's best music as determined by MTVu's college-centric audience -- with an energetic performance of their breakout single "Lessons Learned." Later, the duo returned to accept their Best Video Woodie award.

"We've had one heck of a year," said Matt Johnson, before counterpart Kim Schifino leapt into the crowd.

Additional performers included veteran alt-rockers Death Cab for Cutie, who rocked the audience with its "New Moon" soundtrack single "Meet Me on the Equinox," as well as Passion Pit, the Dead Weather and Clipse, who were joined onstage by fellow rappers Cam'ron and Rick Ross.

Presenter highlights came from Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and pop prankserts 3OH!3. Wentz rolled onto the stage holding a red Solo cup, while 3OH!3 gave a nod to Lady Gaga by dressing in her various VMA outfits. Asher Roth, will.i.am, and surprise guest Cyndi Lauper also presented awards. [Billboard]

Cyndi presented an award with Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester who also recently made an appearance at the Weezer (and Matt & Kim) show on Halloween that was sponsored by RXP aka the Matt Pinfield station. Matt was also at the Woodies as was Diplo who was DJing and David Cross, Zooey Deschanel, Janelle Monae, Dave 1 from Chromeo, and Mary Louise Parker. Matt and Kim didn't get naked like they do in their winning video (their second MTV win for that video), but their backup singers did strip down to their underwear.

The Dead Weather also played a show one day before the Woodies in Brooklyn. The Woodies air December 4th at 10pm. More pictures from the event (11/18 at Roseland Ballroom in NYC), below...

Matt and Kim
Weezer

Brooklyn duo Matt and Kim, dressed as Andy Warhol and his It Girl Edie Sedgewick, took the stage to Fat Joe shouting "Where Brooklyn At?" over the sinister beat of his hit "Lean Back", while they threw out candy to the crowd before beginning a fun-filled set that included their infectious smash hit "Daylight" and short nods to Europe's "Final Countdown" and Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part Two."

As for Weezer, they were dressed in various insect costumes, which vocalist Rivers Cuomo had audience members remove for himself his fellow band members while they continued to play "Undone (The Sweater Song)" early on in the set. The sold out house danced along to all the bouncy music Weezer had to offer (literally bouncy, as the band had a trampoline set up on stage), including hits such as "Perfect Situation", "Island in the Sun", "Surf Wax America", "Buddy Holly", "Pork and Beans", "Dope Nose", and new ones "I Can't Stop Partying", and "I'm Your Daddy." They also played an absolutely awesome cover of MGMT's "Kids", which took a detour to Lady GaGa's massive hit "Poker Face" in the middle. But as usual, it was "My Name is Jonas" that brought the house down.

The biggest surprise of the night, other than the cool cover, was an appearance by Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester. The TV star came out in nude pants splashed with random bursts of color and a 60's style beehive to sing a duet with vocalist Rivers Cuomo on "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To." She sang very well, and later Tweeted that Rivers was "perfection in a bottle." [Examiner]

Weezer maybe had the bug costumes left over from a taping for on an upcoming episode of Yo Gabba Gabba!. More pictures from their Saturday night Halloween show at Hammerstein Ballrooom, including many crowd members in costume, below...
