North Carolina's singing senator has recorded a song critical of the marijuana and alcohol citations filed against members of singer-songwriter Willie Nelson's band in January.Willie Nelson & The Family play a show at Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday, July 28th with Levon Helm Band (who are playing Wellmont Theatre March 12th). Tickets go on Fan Club & VIP presale Friday, March 5th at 10am; general sale starts Friday, March 12th at noon.
"It just looks like a special effort was made to go on that bus and cite them with marijuana," said state Sen. Charlie Albertson, D-Duplin.
The song, called "Leave the Man Alone," refers to the Jan. 28 citations issued to six members of Nelson's band on either possession of marijuana or possession of non-tax-paid alcohol. The band's bus was outside the Duplin County Events Center in Kenansville.
Nelson canceled the show that evening. His staff said the show was canceled because the musician's hand was hurting. But one woman who was at the canceled concert said practically no one believes that was the real reason.
"I don't think it was his hand at all," said Sylvia Hawes, 70, of Rose Hill. She said she believed the alcohol and marijuana charges prompted the cancellation. [Jacksonville Daily News]
Willie has shows booked around the country. His full schedule is posted below...

Eclectic rocker Neil Young, who has made no secret of his disdain for the Grammys, finally won a coveted trophy on Sunday for the first time in a career spanning almost 50 years.Kings of Leon won three. MGMT won none. Loudon Wainwright, Steve Earle, Levon Helm, Steve Martin (bluegrass), and Michael J Fox all won Grammys. Phoenix won for best Alternative Music Album. David Byrne & Brian Eno's CD won for 'Recording Package'. Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Les Paul and Michael Jackson were honored. Stephen Colbert won in the comedy category which came later in the show than his iPad bit. Video of that with the full list of winners below...
Fittingly, the Canadian singer/songwriter was honored for a long-delayed boxed set collecting more than 120 tracks from his early days.
"Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972)" won the Grammy for best art direction on a boxed or special limited-edition package. Young, 64, shared the award with fellow art directors Gary Burden and Jenice Heo.
"Thanks a lot, everybody," Young said as he accepted his statuette.
He also competed for best solo rock vocal Grammy but lost to Bruce Springsteen, whose career total rose to 20.
On Friday he was honored by the music industry at its annual MusiCares charity fundraiser in recognition of his annual concerts for the Bridge School for disabled children.
The 10-disc "Archives" boxed set has been in the works for years, with Young frequently delaying its release so that technology could catch up with his vision. It boasts studio and live tracks, demos, outtakes and other rarities, as well as videos and the first digital release of his directing debut, "Journey Through the Past."
Fans have the choice of three configurations: CD, DVD and Blu-ray -- the most expensive at more than $200. [Reuters]

"Veterans of the original Woodstock festival, including Levon Helm, Paul Kantner and Country Joe McDonald, have organized a scheduled flashback of sorts: they and several other musicians who performed at that 1969 concert will play a new show on Aug. 15 to celebrate the festival's 40th anniversary, The Associated Press reported. The new concert, whose lineup also includes the Woodstock alumni Big Brother and the Holding Company, Ten Years After, Canned Heat and Mountain, will be held at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in upstate New York, where the first Woodstock festival took place. Mr. Helm, who played at Woodstock as a member of the Band, will be appearing with his Levon Helm Band, and Mr. Kantner, who performed at Woodstock with Jefferson Airplane, will appear at the anniversary concert with the upgraded Jefferson Starship." [NY Times]No word still on the big NYC (possibly in Prospect Park) concert. Castle Clinton is hosting four tribute shows though.

With over 130 artists on this year's bill, the list of acts awes at each note with the likes of Sonic Youth, Mos Def, Toadies, Flogging Molly, The B-52s, Lily Allen, Citizen Cope, Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Coheed and Cambria, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk, and many more.
In the tradition of the TV show from which it was born, the Festival has always aimed to offer musical discovery for the fans. The 2009 lineup is rich with pop, country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, indie rock, hip-hop, and gospel, to name a few, spanning cultures and countries from New Orleans to Venezuela to France."
"There are plenty of reasons why you haven't heard of certain movies. Still, it would seem like a movie with Tommy Lee Jones, John Goodman and Peter Sarsgaard could be worthy of your Netflix queue. Maybe it's an off-the-wall indie?Levon Helm kicks off his two night run at Beacon Theatre in NYC tonight (3/5).
Unfortunately, that's not the case with In the Electric Mist. This direct-to-video crime thriller based on the best-selling novel by James Lee Burke is the perfect example of "let's get this out already." The movie goes nowhere, the Blu-ray has no special features, and even the press release has a typo in the first sentence. No one else cares, so why should you?
Well, there is the stellar cast, but we're not exactly sure what they are doing. Jones plays Dave Robicheaux, a detective investigating a bunch of blink-and-you-miss-them murders. Sarsgaard is a movie star and Goodman is a sleezebag, and both characters are kind of pointless. Did we mention that
Robicheaux likes to chitchat with deceased Confederate General John Bell Hood (Levon Helm)? Enter at your own risk.

Levon Helm in Asbury Park - Feb 2008
Triumph and joy. You could see it in Levon Helm's eyes, on his ear-to-ear grin, and most of all, you could hear it within the soul of the music Saturday night. Not just inside the music, but outside of it too, enveloping the Orpheum stage and its performers - between nine and a dozen of them at any given time - like a warm, cloaking embrace. [The Boston Globe]Levon Helm plays the Beacon Theater in NYC tonight & tomorrow.
As previously announced, Levon Helm is playing two shows at NYC's Beacon Theatre in March. Now you can add to that a February 15th show at The Electric Factory in Philly, and one the next day at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. I was also told that he is expected to make an appearance at BB King's this Thursday.
Bill Graham died 16 years ago, but the legendary rock promoter's birthday is still cause for celebration in these parts. That story is about California. Here's what's going on in NYC....
For each of the past three years, Graham's old compadres have invited stars such as Carlos Santana, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt to gather in San Francisco in January for a good time and a good cause.
"We have a dual purpose," says Danny Scher, a former vice president for Bill Graham Presents and current member of the Bill Graham Foundation's advisory board. "One is to give money away to organizations that probably couldn't get it otherwise. The other is to keep the spirit of Bill and awareness of Bill alive." [The Mercury News]
Levon Helm's new CD sounds like a time capsule. Close your eyes while listening to his first solo studio album in 25 years and try to convince yourself it's not the work of a 1930s-era singer. The NYC shows are March 7th & 8th. Tickets on sale Friday.
Helm, famous for his work with The Band, manages to sound old and new at the same time by returning to his rural roots in Dirt Farmer. Of its 13 songs, five are traditional while the other eight are covers of songs by Steve Earle, A.P. Carter and others. The newer songs mix perfectly with the old, thanks in large part to the production work done by multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell and Amy Helm, Levon's daughter.
Helm would sound great even if he wasn't making his first recording since doctors told him in 1998 that throat cancer would end his singing career. Here, he sounds relaxed and at home with the music he loves. [Associated Press]
Ida's new album Lovers Prayers comes out on January 29, 2008. Ida is playing a show with Tara Jane O'Neil at Knitting Factory in NYC tonight (Nov 15, 2007). What do the woods and Levon Helm have to do with this? Keep reading for that (press release), and more tour dates, below....

Levon Helm @ Summerstage, NYC - June 28, 2007 (by Sandwich!)
Is anyone going to see Bob Dylan at Jones Beach tonight? What about Rush on Monday?
Rodrigo y Gabriela and Vietnam for free in Central Park on Sunday might just qualify as the show of the weekend. JDH and Dave P are DJing too. It's really too bad that it's going up against Man Man, Illinois, Dengue Fever, and What Cheer Brigade at McCarren Pool which is also free. I hope for both of them that this rain lets up by then. Dengue Fever is also doing an in-store at Sound Fix on Sunday. (though is a show there even technically an "in-store" anymore?)
PS1 kicks things off in Long Island City this weekend with DFA.
Although Cake Shop's website lists Saturday night's show as "JASON TRACHTENBURG and pals", I'm being told the show will be a full-on Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players "open rehersal", and "a chance to see something new and be witness to the development of some new concepts that are being developed for the Edinburgh Fringe in Aug. A lengthy Q and A session will also occur."
Although they were some of the displaced tenants, Sam Champion is not playing the Pizza Plus benefit at Southpaw on July 13th with Teenage Prayers and The Legendary Captain Greech + the Shrimp Shooters. Wait a minute - who are The Legendar Captain Greech + the Shrimp Shooters???
Sam Champion are for sure playing at South Street Seaport tonight though - with Ra Ra Rabbit........I mean...
