Beliefs

Manimal is releasing a Duran Duran tribute album, Making Patterns Rhyme: a tribute to Duran Duran, on July 15, with all proceeds going to Amnesty International. The comp features Warpaint, Little Dragon, Moby, Austra and more. Moby's cover of "Rio" was released recently (stream below), and now the cover of "Sound of Thunder" by Toronto shoegazers Beliefs can be streamed below as well. They've turned the song into one of their own (reverby vocals, swirling guitars), and it's not the first time they've put their spin on a classic song in the past year.

Check it out, plus the album tracklist, below...

Liars
Liars

Liars made their way from Austin Psych Fest to NYC for a wild, strobe-filled show at Le Poisson Rouge last night (5/8). Jana Hunter, who opened with a great cover of Hall and Oats' "Maneater", opened the show. Pictures from it are in this post.

It was a great set from Liars -- which now includes Pit Er Pat / Boredoms' Butchy Fuego on drums -- but we'll save our commentary for after tonight's show in Bushwick at The Wick (where Marnie Stern played last night). Tickets for the Brooklyn show will be available at the door if you're looking for last minute plans. Their tour continues Saturday in MA.

Liars @ Austin Psych Fest - 5/2/2014
Liars @ Austin Psych Fest - 5/2/2014

Liars never ever sound hollow. There's a fine line between wankery and worthy experimentation, and thanks to their passion, Liars always make for a worthy live show. It doesn't matter if it's not your cup of tea, and you spent all day catching the deciduous vibes of campfire acts like Woods. Seeing three compelling weirdos go nuts on stage will always cast an impressive silhouette.

There was a moment towards the beginning of their set when the power snapped off and they spent a few minutes working out the problem. Once it was figured out, Angus reengaged the crowd with a couple old-fashioned "How are y'all doing tonight?1" calls. That's right, for a few moments a noise band cared about its audience. - [Austin Chronicle]

Liars headlined the first night (5/2) of the 2014 Austin Psych Fest. It was one of the first times the band -- which now includes Pit Er Pat's Butchy Fuego on drums -- have performed since releasing Mess, their terrific, accessible, danceable new album. Pictures from Psych Fest are in this post.

NYC gets its first taste of Mess tonight (5/8) at Le Poisson Rouge and tickets are still available. They also play Friday (5/9) at new Bushwick venue The Wick and tickets are still available for that show too. Jana Hunter of Lower Dens opens both shows.

If you'd like to see Liars at The Wick for free, we're giving away a pair of tickets. Details on that, plus more APF pics, below...

pro

The new single from Liars' excellent album Mess is "Pro Anti Anti" which, in the opening seconds, sounds like it's going to be some '90s house jam until the distorted synths come crashing through the wall like Kool-Aid Man. One of the remixes for the song is by Manchester's Factory Floor (who were just in NYC) who pull the stems apart and rebuild the song in their own acid image. Stream it (via The Quietus) below.

Liars are at Austin Psych Fest this weekend and then will be in NYC for two shows: Le Poisson Rouge on May 8 and The Wick on May 9. Lower Dens' Jana Hunter opens and tickets to both LPR and The Wick are still available.

More shows have been added to Liars' tour schedule and all dates are listed, along with the remix and original version of "Pro Anti Anti, below...

Record Store Day 2014 is Saturday (4/19) and there are upwards of 800 RSD exclusive titles released worldwide this year. Which is clearly too many. But if you're reading this now you're probably at least thinking of going out and joining the throngs of music fans, record collectors, and eBay types trying to get all the stuff on their list. Or maybe you're going out to check out some in-store performances, or just hoping to have a couple free beers.

We've already written about a whole lot things being released this year. But we've got more. BV editors Andrew Sacher and Bill Pearis each picked 11 RSD exclusives they think are worth the dough. (Ten just wasn't enough.) What titles are you looking for this year?

Their respective lists, along with some streams, below...

Mess on a Mission

Owing a whole lot to late '80s EBM, New Beat and industrial while sounding very much in the now, Liars' new album, Mess, is their most immediate and danceable in ages. (It's also, for what it's worth, my favorite of 2014 so far.) If you've had "Mess on a Mission" on repeat and have wanted more, the whole Mess is streaming over at NPR and the album's out next week (3/25).

In other news, Liars will release "Mess" as Record Store Day 12" on clear vinyl that has colored yarn imbedded in it. That's what it looks like above. There is also a new Black Bananas remix of "Mess on a Mission" which you can stream below.

You can also catch Liars live in NYC in May where they'll play Le Poisson Rouge (5/8, tix) and The Wick (5/9, tix). The band have added a few other select shows to their schedule since we last posted and updated dates are listed, along with streams, below.

Liars

Liars will release their terrific new album, Mess, on March 25. There's some undeniable industrial/EBM influence on this one, but at the same time it's their catchiest, most immediate record in ages. (It's really good.) You can stream single "Mess on a Mission" and the Silent Servant remix of it below.

Liars are playing Austin Psych Fest and Sasquatch in May and in between those fests they'll playing a few shows, including two in NYC: Le Poisson Rouge on May 8 and The Wick on May 9. Tickets to both LPR and The Wick are on sale now.

All Liars dates are listed, along with streams, below...

Liars will release their seventh album, Mess, via Mute Records on March 25. That's the cover art above and tracklist is below. Following 2012's glitchy, introverted WIXIW, frontman Angus Andrew says this one is quite different:

We are a reactionary, or maybe a better word is schizophrenic band. We go from one extreme to the other. Working on the last record was really doubtful and paranoid, and that's fine, but it just meant that when work started on this one, it was the exact opposite. It was way more instinctual, fun and confident.
The first single, "Mess on a Mission," definitely backs that statement up, it's a real banger, the kind we haven't heard Liars do in a while. You can stream it below.

While a tour is promised for later this year, Liars' only dates at the moment are appearances at Palm Spring's Desert Daze Festival April, and Austin Psych Fest in May.

"Mess on a Mission" stream, album info and video teaser, below...

Austin Psych Fest 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
APF

The 6th annual Austin Psych Fest happens from May 2-4 at the Carson Creek Ranch (where it took place last year), and this year's lineup includes Primal Scream, Loop, The Black Angels, The Zombies, of Montreal, The Horrors, Black Lips, Temples, Avey Tare's Slasher Flick, Liars, Mono, Destruction Unit, Oneohtrix Point Never, Moon Duo, TOY, Earthless, Shannon and the Clams, La Femme, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Quilt, Gap Dream, Circuit Des Yeux, and more. Tickets (including a camping pass option) are on sale now.

Let's hope that means a Loop (who just played ATP End of an Era) and Primal Scream will have other North American shows while here. French band La Femme mentioned they'd be doing a two-month North American tour in 2014 and this is the first actual date we've seen.

Warm Up MoMA @ PS1 - 8/31/3013

MoMA PS1 Warm Up closed out August with a bang on Saturday (8/31) with one of the most stacked, varied line-ups of the season, featuring live performances from bands Liars and IO Echo, plus sets from Cajmere, Lil Silva, Jon Hopkins and Sam Valenti IV. Pictures from all their performances are in this post.

Meanwhile, Jon Hopkins (who played Cameo later Saturday night) just released a track with Bat For Lashes (who played this weekend too) on vocals. You can watch the video for that below.

Warm Up concludes its 2013 season this Saturday (9/7) with French electronic artist Alan Braxe, acclaimed hip hop producer Young Guru, Soul Clap & Wolf + Lamb, Lee Bannon and Huerco S. Tickets are still available.

Danny Brown

Even though the season doesn't official end until September 21, Labor Day (9/2) is generally seen as the end of summer and the last chance for NYers to get out of town and relax. Mind you some people find a half-empty city just as relaxing as a beach, and for those who will be in town this weekend there are lots of live music options. Head below for our Top 10 Labor Day Weekend music picks...

Jon Hopkins
Jon Hopkins

As discussed, UK electronic musician Jon Hopkins is returning to North America this month for Warm Up at MoMA PS1 on August 31. It's one of the better Warm Ups this year, with live sets from indie bands Liars and IO Echo, plus '90s Chicago house vet Cajmere, and another solid UK producer Lil Silva. Tickets for that show are still available.

After Warm Up ends, Jon Hopkins will keep the party going by heading to Cameo for a midnight show. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Flyer below. Jon's new album, Immunity, is one of the most forward thinking dance albums of the year, and if you hadn't heard it, you can listen on Spotify and stream a track below.

Lil Silva will also be playing a late show in Brooklyn that day. HIs is a LAZERPOP party happening at Glasslands (11:30 PM) with L-Vis 1990, Slava, and Peter Fonda. Tickets for that show are on sale now. He's releasing a new EP, Distance, next week (8/5) via Good Years. You can watch the video for its track, "No Doubt," along with a list of all dates, below.

Culture Collide

FILTER Magazine's Culture Collide festival is returning to various LA venues this year from October 9-12. It begins with a kickoff show with Phoenix and Dinosaur Jr (maybe they'll join each other for "Entertainment"?) at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena (10/9), which tickets (separate from the rest of the festival) are on sale for now.

Then, the rest of the fest will include sets from Liars, King Khan & the Shrines, The Raveonettes, Rhye, Iceage, The Men, Medicine, Fuck Buttons, No Joy, Heliotropes and many other bands from around the world. Festival passes that you get in to all non-Phoenix/Dinosaur Jr events are on sale now.

Jon Hopkins
Jon Hopkins

As mentioned, London electronic musician Jon Hopkins is releasing his new album, Immunity, on June 4 via Domino. It's heavy on the thick, dancefloor rhythms, but he pays serious attention to creating gorgeous melodies that do more than make your feet move. Take a listen to the entire hour-plus thing for yourself over at NPR.

Jon is celebrating the new album with a previously discussed record release party in NYC at Glasslands on the day of its release (6/4). Openers on that show include California producer SFV Acid (live) and Brooklyn producer Octo Octa. Tickets for that show are still available.

SFV Acid released his debut album, The Dwell, this week (5/28) via UNO NYC. It was allegedly created entirely in Starbucks locations, and channels a rich history of IDM, making him a good fit for the bill with Jon Hopkins. You can stream that album in its entirety below (via FADER).

Octo Octa also released a new album this week, Between Two Selves, which is an ambient take on this whole house revival that's going on. That album can be picked up at the 100% Silk webstore and you can stream one of its tracks, "Please Don't Leave," below. He also plays other hometown shows on Friday (5/31) at Body Actualized Center (143 Troutman), Saturday (6/1) at Bossa Nova Civic Club (1271 Myrtle Ave), and on July 5 at Cameo with Anthony Naples and Magic Touch. Advance tickets for the Cameo show are on sale now.

Back to Jon Hopkins. In addition to his record release party at Glasslands, he'll be returning to NYC this summer for Warm Up at MoMA PS1. He plays on August 31 with a pretty stacked lineup of Cajmere, Liars (live), Lil Silva, IO Echo (live), and Miles. Tickets for all Warm Up shows go on sale June 5 at noon.

Cajmere (aka Curtis Jones), who plays Warm Up with Jon Hopkins, is a '90s Chicago house veteran that you may know from his head-knockin' 1992 single, "Brighter Days" (streaming below), his 1995 single as Green Velvet, "Flash" (also streaming below), or the rest of his long discography. He put out a new album, Too Undeground for the Main Stage, this month and you can stream two tracks from that below too. You can catch him in NYC much sooner when he plays Williamsburg dance club Output on June 6 with Free Magic & Faso and Discovery. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

All Jon Hopkins dates are listed, along with song streams, below...

Liars @ The Met's Temple of Dendur, 5/17/2013
Liars

As mentioned, Liars were in town over the weekend for two shows. We already posted pictures from their Le Poisson Rouge show, but the main event this weekend was their performance on Saturday at the Temple of Dendur exhibit in The Met. Having the band play amongst Egyptian ruins as the windows darkened into dusk with projections behind them was, in the words of our photographer Amanda Hatfield, "nearly an hour of weird creepy awesomeness." Some might claim that sound was not ideal, but getting to see them in such a genuinely epic setting is certainly a fine tradeoff. Pictures from their performance are in this post.

The next show happening at Temple of Dendur is on July 19 when Om will play their track "At Giza," which is now sold out. More pictures from the Met below...

Liars @ Le Poisson Rouge - 5/19/13
Liars

Onetime Brooklyn residents Liars returned to their home city for two shows over the weekend. The first happened on Saturday (5/18) at The Met and the second happened on Sunday (5/19) at a more traditional concert space, Le Poisson Rouge, where it was relocated to from its original Brooklyn Masonic Temple location. Pictures from the latter are in this post.

Lower Dens were initially supposed to open that show but quickly dropped off and were replaced by Toronto's Doldrums. However, Doldrums never made it across the border (missing their Ran Tea House show too) as their van got broken into and Airick Woodhead's laptop and passport got stolen. Via Twitter: "hey my van was broken into & along with my laptop with a years worth of writing and a box containing nothing but my fav CDs from teenagedom."

So Liars ended up taking the stage at their originally schedule time of 8:30 with no opener, and played a set that was a little over 75 minutes and included three encores. More pictures from the show (including one of the setlist) below...

Continue reading "Liars played 2 NYC shows (Le Poisson Rouge pics & setlist); Doldrums' van got broken into, never made it to NYC"

As mentioned a few times, Liars are here this weekend for two shows: a sold-out one Saturday (5/18) at The Met's Temple of Dendur, and then Sunday (5/19) at Le Poisson Rouge with Doldrums (relocated from Brooklyn Masonic Temple, tickets). To plug these shows, Liars are offering up two new songs as a free download. One of those tracks, "I Saw You From The Lifeboat," has a video as well which you can watch below.

In addition to the NYC shows, Liars will be heading to Europe for a tour that includes a stop at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Spain. All dates are listed below.

Doldrums @ BVSXSW 2013 (more by Bruno Simões)
Doldrums

As mentioned, Liars have two upcoming NYC shows: the "multimedia, site-specific performance" in the Temple of Dendur in the Sackler Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 18 (sold out); and then a second the next night (5/19) that was to have happened at Brooklyn Masonic Temple. That show, part of the Wordless Music Series, has been moved to Le Poisson Rouge and now features Doldrums as the opener. All previously purchased tickets will be honored and you can still get them too. We're also giving two pairs away.

As for Doldrums, they'll also play Ran Tea House in Williamsburg the day before the LPR show (5/18) with Rioux and Crux. All tour dates for Liars and Doldrums are listed below.

Lower Dens at Central Park in 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Lower Dens

As mentioned, Liars are coming to NYC this month for shows at The Met on May 18 (sold out) and Brooklyn Masonic Temple on May 19. Since we last posted, Baltimore dream pop crew Lower Dens has been added to the Brooklyn Masonic Temple show. Tickets for that one are still available and we've also got two pairs to give away.

UPDATE: As quick as they joined this show, Lower Dens have dropped off of it.

Details on how to enter to win tickets and videos from both bands below...

Still from "WIXIW"
Liars

Liars have released a star, black-and-whilte video for the title track from last year's WIXIW. The clip is, according to director Alex/2Tone, "the legend of Sisyphus as told by a young ballplayer lost in a haze of codeine and prescription weed." Check that out below.

Don't forget, Liars will be here in May, playing a sold-out show at The Met on 5/18 as well as another Brooklyn Masonic Temple on 5/19 (tickets).

Liars

As mentioned, Liars are playing a special show in NYC on May 18 at the Temple of Dendur in the Sackler Wing at the Met Museum. Tickets for that show are on sale now. They've also just added another NYC happening a day later (5/19) at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple, and it's being presented by Wordless Music (who are also presenting the Met show) and BOOM Collective. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
