Ab-Soul in Williamsburg Park in 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
There's never a lack of great hip hop shows going on in NYC. Here's a roundup of a few of the good ones coming up, plus a handful of new tracks and videos from artists who will be here soon...
NYC rapper Smoke DZA recently made a video for "Hearses" which features Black Hippy's Ab-Soul and appeared on DZA's recent Dream.Zone.Achieve album. Check that out below. Ab-Soul, who put out his own new album recently, will be here this weekend for the 4Knots afterparty at Webster Hall on Saturday (7/12). Tickets for that show are still available.
Ab-Soul's TDE labelmate SZA, who dropped the track "Moodring" earlier this week, is now back with a Jill Scott collaboration, "Divinity," produced by Channel Orange contributor Om'Mas Keith. Jill's powerhouse soul mixed with SZA's airy indie/R&B tendencies works out really well, as you can hear below. SZA plays the AfroPunk-curated RBSS show at Rough Trade this month with Cakes Da Killa and more ($3 with RSVP). And both Cakes and SZA are playing the free AfroPunk Festival in August with D'Angelo, Body Count, Trash Talk and more.
This weekend is also the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival which includes a show on Saturday (7/12) at 50 Kent with Raekwon, Jay Electronica, CJ Fly, Cyhi The Prynce and more (tickets). Rae just rapped over a remix of Teena Marie's "Ohh La La" yesterday (7/10) for his #TBT series, and you can stream that below. CyHi also just put out a remix of "Good Night" off this year's Hystori: Black History Project mixtape. He brings Scotty ATL, Marian Mereba and Andrew "GC" Fennell along for the remix, which is streaming below.
Speaking of rap shows at 50 Kent, that's where Fool's Gold Day Off happens this year (Labor Day, 9/1) with Danny Brown, French Montana, The LOX and more (tix on sale 7/15). French Montana just put out a new single, "R&B Bitches" featuring Fabolous and Wale which is an unsubtle ode to the female R&B singers they dreamt of sleeping with (Mary J Blige, Miley Cyrus, Ashanti, Kelly Rowland, and Rihanna to name a few). You can stream that one below.
Danny Brown also plays NYC sooner at Peter Rosenberg's birthday party on July 23 at Best Buy Theater with Schoolboy Q and Action Bronson (tickets). Schoolboy Q also plays NYC with The Weeknd and Jhene Aiko on September 19 at Barclays Center. Tickets for that show went on sale earlier today.
Juicy J at Irving Plaza in 2013 (more by Samantha Marble)
The Weeknd's pal Drake will also be in NYC when his tour with Lil Wayne hits Queens' Forest Hills Tennis Stadium on August 19 (tickets). Wayne and Drake's collaborative song "Believe Me" was just revamped by Juicy J who released a version with his own verses that you can stream below. This comes a day after Juicy did the same to Drake's song "0 to 100," which you can also stream below. Juicy's tour hits NYC on July 22 at Terminal 5. Tickets for that show are still available.
Back to this weekend, the Jay Z / Beyonce tour rolls through the NYC-area for shows at MetLife Stadium tonight (7/11) and Saturday (7/12). Tickets for those shows are still available. Jay also plays Global Citizen Fest. Beyonce and Jay Z will also be filming part of their tour for an HBO special, as Billboard reports.
For something much smaller, local rap group Ratking play another hometown show on August 4 at SOB's. Tickets are on sale now.
For something more old school at SOB's, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony member Krayzie Bone will celebrate the release of his new album, Chasing The Devil, there on July 22. Tickets are on sale.
For something even more old school, Biz Markie celebrates the 25th anniversary of "Just A Friend" with a live performance and DJ set on September 12 at BB King's. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Sooner at BB King's, you can catch Fat Joe with Smoove Ski, La Luv and Famous on July 18. Tickets are on sale.
Internet-famous rap group Turquoise Jeep return to NYC on September 18 at Brooklyn Bowl with Oxymorrons and SABA. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
And while we're not sure who will show up, The Soul Rebels play Brooklyn Bowl on August 15 with special guests and a Google search shows Joey Bada$$ was initially announced. Even if it's no longer him, they've collaborated with other rappers including Slick Rick, members of Mobb Depp, The Lox and more, so it should be interesting. Tickets are on sale.

Drake at Made In America 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Drake and his Young Money boss/frequent collaborator Lil Wayne have announced that they'll go on a co-headlining tour this summer which naturally will hit some pretty big venues, including two in the NYC-area. First they play the recently re-opened Forest Hills Tennis Stadium on August 19 in Queens, and then they hit Holmdel, NJ's PNC Ban kArts Center on August 26. Tickets for those shows go on sale June 21.
All dates are listed, with Wayne and Drake's recent collaboration "Believe Me," below...
Action Bronson at Irving Plaza in January (more by Lukas Hodge)

The two-stage lineup was just announced and the main stage includes 50 Cent, Nas, The Roots, Wiz Khalifa, DJ Mustard w/ YG & Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz, Action Bronson, Troy Ave and more, plus Nicki Minaj (joining Lil Wayne and Young Money), following her guest appearance at last year's Summer Jam, which followed her canceling her set at 2012's. Meanwhile, the Festival Stage includes Childish Gambino, Iggy Azalea, Jhene Aiko, Nipsey Hussle and more.

After a few years of releasing mixtapes, Compton rapper YG is set to release his debut album, My Krazy Life, on March 18 via Pu$haz Ink/CTE World/Def Jam. He's got some big name guests lined up for it, including Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Drake, plus newer-comers RIch Homie Quan and Ty Dolla $ign. Many of the tracks were produced by frequent collaborator DJ Mustard, who's also behind big tracks for 2 Chainz, Tyga, and others. You can watch the videos for "Left, Right" and "My Nigga" (and its remix featuring Lil Wayne, Rich Homie Quan, Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj), and stream the Drake-featuring "Why Do You Love?" below.
YG and DJ Mustard will support the new album by going out on a tour together this spring. That tour brings them to NYC on April 27 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/28) at 10 AM, and they're currently on Citi Cardmember/Live Nation/Music Geeks presales. All tour dates haven't been revealed yet, but you can check out the list of currently announced dates below...
Drake as Lil Wayne as Steve Urkel
The first Saturday Night Live episode of 2014 aired last night (1/18) with Drake as the host and musical guest. He acted in most of the sketches, including "Hip Hop Classics Before They Were Stars" where he impersonated Lil Wayne as Steve Urkel on "Family Matters" and Jay Z on "Mr. Wizard." That same sketch also had Kenan Thompson playing Rick Ross as the red Teletubby. Drake also did a sketch re-enacting his Bar Mitzvah and "Resolution Revolution" where he rapped about (and then broke) new year's resolutions to stop drinking and smoking, and then did Cosplay dressed as a wizard for the "no more Cosplay" resolution. He was in a few other sketches too, including impersonations of A-Rod and Katt Williams, all of which can be watched in the full episode video below.
For Drake's musical performance, he did "Started From the Bottom" into "Trophies" and a stripped down version of "Hold On We're Going Home" into "From Time," the latter of which featured an appearance by Jhene Aiko who also sings on the album version of the song and sang with him at his recent Barclays Center show. Videos of those performances are below too.
In addition to all the Drake stuff, the episode also marked the debut of new cast member Sasheer Zamata, SNL's first African American female cast member since 2007, when Maya Rudolph left the show. It was also the first episode that SNL's two new female African American writers, LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones, contributed to.

Since his radio-ready debut, rapper Big Sean has released an evolutionary mixtape and has had some memorable guest verses ("Mercy," "Burn," "Show Out," "All Me"), that have set the anticipation pretty high for his sophomore album, Hall of Fame (the one that doesn't feature Kendrick Lamar's murderous verse). Much of the album is void of club hits and instead indebted to the introverted emotional rap of Drake or latter-day Kanye, especially on the recent Jhene Aiko-featuring single, "Beware." It also features guest appearances from Miguel, Nas, Kid Cudi, Young Jeezy, Nicki Minaj, Juicy J, and others.
Big Sean is also touring this year, including a run with Tyler, the Creator and Kid Cudi, and a NYC-area appearance in October for Rock the Bells NJ, which also includes Black Hippy, A$AP Mob, Jhene Aiko, Juicy J, J Cole, and more (tickets). Sean and Jhene AIko recently performed "Beware" together on Jimmy Kimmel Live, so maybe there's a chance that will happen again at Rock the Bells? Video of them on Kimmel, below.
He was also supposed to be in NYC this Thursday (8/22) for a conversation at Gramercy Theatre, but that has been canceled.
All upcoming dates are listed, along with the 'Kimmel' video and two music videos from the new album, below...
As mentioned, Lil Wayne and T.I. are going on a tour which hits the NYC-area on July 19 at Jones Beach, July 24 at PNC Bank Arts Center, and July 31 at Comcast Theatre. Inititally, Future was said to be opening those shows, but it will actually be 2 Chainz on the Jones Beach and PNC Bank Arts Center shows, and Tyga on the Comcast Theatre show. Ticket info for the shows has also been posted. General and VIP package on-sale begins Saturday (5/4) at 10 AM, Fan Club/VIP Packages presale begin today at 10 AM, and a Citi Cardmember presale begins Thursday (5/2) at 10 AM.
Toronto shoegazers Beliefs released their self titled debut LP this past March and went on a tour that was supposed to hit Brooklyn's Shea Stadium that same month. Unfortunately, they had to cancel that show, but they are now set to come to the venue on May 30 with Slowdance. Tickets for that show go on sale today at noon.
Cayucas is playing Mercury Lounge on July 5. Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale today at noon.
Shugo Tokumaru and Mirah are playing Bowery Ballroom on July 11. Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale today at noon.
PAPA is playing Mercury Lounge on June 17. Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale today at noon.
Production duo TNGHT (aka Hudson Mohawke and Lunice), who are playing this year's Pitchfork Festival, are about to kick off their North American tour this month, which surrounds their appearances at Coachella. That tour was initially supposed to hit NYC for shows at Webster Hall on April 16 and 17 but TNGHT have cancelled the April 16 date. They're still playing on April 17 though and tickets for that show are still available. Updated dates are listed below.
TNGHT also produced the track "Lay It Down," which appears on Lil Wayne's new album I Am Not A Human Being II. Nicki MInaj is also on that track and you can stream it below.
Wayne is supporting that album on a huge tour with T.I. (who recently played NYC at Best Buy Theater) and Future. That tour hits the NYC area on July 19 at Jones Beach and July 24 at PNC Bank Arts Center. Tickets for those shows are not on sale yet but you can check ticketmaster for updates.
All dates are listed, along with that song stream, below...

As expected, there have been lots of (dangerous) rumors floating around about Big Boi's upcoming sophomore solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, which is due out December 11 via Def Jam (pushed back from November 13). He's now revealed what is (fingers crossed!) the official tracklist for the album and the guest spots are pretty exciting. Despite Little Dragon's initial guest spot having gone to Kelly Rowland a while back, the group actually appears on three other album tracks. The album's got plenty of love from the dirty south, like on "Gossip," which features veteran UGK and worthy newcomer Big K.R.I.T.; frequent Outkast/Big Boi collaborator Killer Mike appears on a track with Little Dragon; TI and Ludacris end up on a track together; and Sleepy Brown of Organized Noize, who produced a ton of Outkast back in the day is on one too. In more surprising (and also exciting) news, Wavves and Jai Paul are both on the album. As is A$AP Rocky, Phantogram, Kid Cudi, and others. You can check out the full tracklist below.
In related news, TI also revealed the tracklist for his much-delayed upcoming album, Trouble Man (due out 12/18), and it looks a bit different than the one we initially mentioned. The most striking difference is that the song sampling Gotye and featuring Kendrick Lamar is not listed anymore. But in more positive news, Big Boi's Outkast partner Andre 3000 is there on the song, "Sorry" (the one where he allegedly apologizes to Big Boi). Cee Lo Green, A$AP Rocky, R. Kelly, and more are set to appear too. The full tracklist is below. TI plays NYC on December 18 at Best Buy Theater (tickets).
T.I. at SXSW 2012 (more by Ryan Muir)
Atlanta MC T.I. is prepping to release Trouble Man, his eighth studio album, before the end of the year. Though not named after the the excellent Marvin Gaye soundtrack of the same name, as a recent listening party can attest, the LP does dip its toes into samples from that effort while logging guest spots from R. Kelly, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky, No I.D., P!nk, Cee-Lo, Pharrell Williams and more. Gotye gets into the mix via a sample on TI's track "Somebody That I Used To Know". Stream some tracks below.
In the meantime, the promotional arm is in full swing for T.I. and you can look for the MC to play some live dates. One of those goes down in NYC on December 18th at Best Buy. Tickets are on sale now.
All known tour dates, those song streams and some video is below
Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz, who has been making guest appearances for years and has a few mixtapes to his name as well, is set to release his first official album, Based on a T.R.U. Story, this week (8/14) via Def Jam. The album features guest spots from Kanye West, Drake, Nicki MInaj, Lil Wayne, The-Dream, John Legend, Scarface, and more. You can check out some streams and videos from the album and the cover art and tracklist below.
2 Chainz has some upcoming dates in support of the new album. His only live date in the NYC area is Rock the Bells, which he plays on September 1 at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ, but he'll be in NYC on Thursday (8/16) to sign autographs of the new album at J&R Music and Computer World (23 Park Row) at 6 PM. "Purchase the CD beginning 8/14 & receive a wristband to meet 2 Chainz on 8/16. While supplies last."
That same night (8/16), there will also be an official album release party for Based on a T.R.U. Story at Webster Hall for a Girls Night Out party (ladies free all night). No word on whether or not 2 Chainz will actually be showing up, but if he's in NYC for that autograph signing, it seems likely. The flier for this party is below.
UPDATE: Though Webster Hall is still open Thursday night, the 2 Chainz event is cancelled.

Nicki MInaj, who was scheduled to headline Hot 97 Summer Jam at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ last night (6/3), cancelled her performance due to a diss made by Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg, while he was introducing Kendrick Lamar's set at the pre-show. Rosenberg said, "I know there are some chicks in here waiting to sing along with 'Starships' later. I'm not talking to y'all right now. Fuck that bullshit. I'm here to talk about real hip hop shit." Video footage of that is below.
Not long after that diss, Lil Wayne took to twitter, saying "Young Money ain't doing summer jam." Nicki then followed with "Wow. U niggaz just fucked up history. But the President has spoken. #YMCMB" and "I go above and beyond for my fans. But won't ever go against wayne's word. What he says, goes." Young Money rapper Tyga went through with his performance, but Nicki refused to take the stage.
Needless to say, Nicki was given immediate backlash. Funkmaster Flex dissed her, saying "we ain't fucking with commercial rappers no more" (video below) and a PIX11 news report has footage of fans who came from Georgia lashing out too (video below). Maybe Rosenberg should have thought twice before dissing the headliner of his own radio station's show, but he made the comment at the pre-show, which hosted less commercial rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, ASAP Rocky, Azealia Banks, and Big KRIT, where a comment like that isn't so out of line. Plus, was that diss really grounds for canceling an entire performance, especially one that thousands of fans probably dropped a good chunk of their paycheck on?
Nicki's set was reportedly supposed to include a number of guest appearances including veterans Nas and Lauryn Hill (who played HIghline Ballroom the night before). Nas and Lauryn took Nicki's place and delivered a performance of their own at the festival, which you can watch video of below. With all the positive reactions to her Highline show and the Summer Jam performance, Lauryn Hill seems to have had one hell of a weekend in NYC.
Azealia Banks at Bowery Ballroom (via)
In related news, Azealia Banks played Bowery Ballroom at night after her set at the Summer Jam pre-show. Though doors were at 7PM, she didn't take the stage until 1 AM. (Though that set time was pretty well known in advance.) If you were at the show, was her set worth the wait? From the looks of the YouTube videos, the crowd was into it. Those Bowery performance videos are below.

After an EP and a mixtape, Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar released his debut LP Section.80 last month via Top Dawg Entertainment. The album features contributions by fellow Black Hippy members and production by J. Cole on the epic closing track "HiiiPoWer." You can watch the video for that below.
Kendrick is also rumored to appear on Dr. Dre's Detox (if that ever actually comes out) and is on Game (formerly The Game)'s The R.E.D. Album, which after being delayed for about two years, was released today (8/23) via DGC/Interscope. He appears on the album's first full track, "The City," and absolutely kills it. Between Game's fury, Kendrick's breakneck lyrical flow, and Cool & Dre's production, the track is one of the album's highest points. Some other standout guests appear throughout the LP including Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne on "Martins vs. Goblins," Big Boi and E-40 on "Speakers on Blast", and Drake on "Good Girls Go Bad." You can stream those tracks below and order the album on Amazon.
Kendrick has a few shows coming up including one on August 31 at S.O.B.'s in NYC with Trav, Los, and Sim City. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
In related news, Smoke DZA is having an album release party for his upcoming LP Rolling Stoned on August 29 at S.O.B.'s with special guests Asap Rocky, Bun B, Va$htie and more. Tickets for the show are on sale now. You can catch DZA in NYC again when he returns as part of the Smokers Club Tour with Curren$y, Method Man, Big K.R.I.T, and others.
Speaking of J. Cole, his debut LP, Cole World: The Sideline Story is set to be released on September 27 via Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint. The video for the album's single, "Work Out," is below. He's set to kick off the 'Cole World: World Tour' on Tuesday (8/23) in Canada and continue touring internationally through mid-December. The tour hits NYC on October 25 at Best Buy Theatre. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale Friday (8/26) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (8/24) at 10 AM and an internet presale starting Thursday (8/25) at 10 AM.

Rapper Lil Wayne walked out of New York's Rikers Island jail Thursday and was set to fly to Miami for a welcome home party thrown by his record label, his publicist said. He'll soon head to a studio to work on new music, publicist Kia Selby said. Lil Wayne, whose legal name is Dwayne Carter, began serving jail time on a gun possession charge last March. Former President Bill Clinton, asked about Lil Wayne on a radio show this week, predicted Lil Wayne would stay out of trouble in the future. "This guy's smart and he's got ability and he's got a new chance now," Clinton said. "What I hope is that it's not just something to brand him as a cool guy, but it'll never happen to him again." The New York conviction stemmed from his arrest in 2007 outside New York City's Beacon Theater. According to police, Carter had a .40-caliber pistol on his tour bus. His attorney said it belonged to someone else. - [CNN]Wow, Bill Clinton commenting on Lil Wayne? If anyone had any doubt that touring is where the money is in the music business, a quick look at the top Moneymakers for 2008 should hammer the point home.I hope Kanye West can handle being below The Jonas Brothers (and Lil Wayne). The whole list below...
Regardless of genre, retail sales or radio play, each of the 20 acts on Billboard's Moneymakers list toured in 2008. (Taylor Swift mostly opened for Brad Paisley but doesn't get credit for that revenue). For almost all of them, touring generated the most revenue. And in a year when recorded-music sales declined yet again, many earned more at the box office than ever before. [Billboard]

A rumor is going around that Thom Yorke is here and possibly performing, but Men.Style.com says...
I've got some good news and some bad news for all you fashion, music, and fashion music fans. The bad news first: Despite the rumors Twittering around the Interwebs, Thom Yorke will not, in fact, be playing tomorrow's Rag & Bone show. The good news, however, is that the Radiohead singer did "curate" the tunes that'll accompany the models down the runway. Guess he's returning the favor after the nice bomber jacket the lads hooked him up with for the Grammys. (Notably, Lil Wayne also wore the brand last Sunday--who knows, maybe he's hard at work on a playlist for Spring 2010.) In any case, autograph seekers should leave the Sharpies at home, as I'm told Yorke won't even be at the show. (I assume the same's true for Wayne.)In other Thom Yorke
This is the second time Terminator Salvation came up recently. The first was because of Christian Bale freaking out.
