Lily Allen

The blog is in fact deleted.

Lily Allen @ Roseland Ballroom (more by Natasha Ryan)
Lily Allen

"I havent written on here for a while but I've taken the time to write this as I think music piracy is having a dangerous effect on British music, but some really rich and successful artists like Nick Mason from Pink Floyd and Ed O'Brien from Radiohead don't seem to think so. Last week in an article in the Times these guys from huge bands said file sharing music is fine. It probably is fine for them. They do sell-out arena tours and have the biggest Ferrari collections in the world. For new talent though, file sharing is a disaster as it's making it harder and harder for new acts to emerge." [Lily Allen on MySpace, September 14, 2009]
On September 20th Lily Allen started a blog called "It's Not Alright". Her first post was a letter by James Blunt that started with the line "Lily is our Leader". Other posts include a letter from Tim Rice Oxley from Keane, one from Matt Bellamy from Muse, and, ironically, a post about 50 Cent that she lifted without credit from Techdirt. She has since, sort of, apologized. There are also posts by/about Mark Ronson, The Futureheads, Patrick Wolf, and Bat For Lashes' Natasha Khan.

"The 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival will showcase a diverse blend of acts both fresh and familiar at the eighth edition of the event in Zilker Park October 2-4. Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and Beastie Boys are performing for the first time at the Festival, with Kings of Leon, Ben Harper and Relentless7, and Thievery Corporation returning to Zilker Park once again. John Legend, The Dead Weather, and The Levon Helm Band will also make their ACL Festival debut, while Austin's own Ghostland Observatory will no doubt deliver another memorable set for festival goers.

With over 130 artists on this year's bill, the list of acts awes at each note with the likes of Sonic Youth, Mos Def, Toadies, Flogging Molly, The B-52s, Lily Allen, Citizen Cope, Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Coheed and Cambria, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk, and many more.

In the tradition of the TV show from which it was born, the Festival has always aimed to offer musical discovery for the fans. The 2009 lineup is rich with pop, country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, indie rock, hip-hop, and gospel, to name a few, spanning cultures and countries from New Orleans to Venezuela to France."

Lily Allen

"The venue was Roseland in the Times Square area of NYC. I was impressed that the place was sold out. Nev "has a guy" who works in security. We bypassed the line (standing in the rain poor guys), went to the front door, was ushered to a set of stair and we sat in the balcony watching the show from above. We were there early enough that we were able to secure high chairs and a place next to the ledge. Our seats were phenomenal and we were able to watch the entire show comfy and unobstructed. I bumped into someone I know who works the venue and she gave Nev and I two free drink coupons (I heart Malibu).

Then Lily Allen came on. What a treat she was from beginning to end. She mentioned between songs that she was not feeling well. You could not tell from her performance. She was high energy. She sang the crowd favorites: The Fear, Smile, It's Not Me It's You, and my favorite Fuck You. The thing that amazes me is that she closed her show with her rendition of of Britney Spears' Womanizer. The rendition started out with a clip of the new song "Day and Night"." [Seletyn's Weblog]

Lily Allen's previous NYC show was at the much smaller Bowery Ballroom. More pictures from last (4/20) night's show, below...

DOWNLOAD: Matt and Kim - Silver Tiles (MP3)

Lily Allen

Trouble Andrew, Matt & Kim, and Lily Allen played a MySpace Secret Show at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night, February 10th. It was the same day Lily's new album It's Not Me, It's You was released.

I missed them, but I'm told Trouble Andrew played for only 15 minutes. Matt & Kim started at 9PM and played to an enthusiastic, but not full, room. It wasn't until Lily Allen went on that the powers who be opened the flood gates and let everyone waiting outside into the venue. Then the room was packed.

It wasn't as rowdy as NYC Matt & Kim shows usually are, but plenty of people in the audience were there just to see the smiling duo from Brooklyn. At least one crowd member told Matt exactly that, during one of Matt's many peppy dialogues. For "Yea Yeah", the song everyone knows from their older album, Matt had all the lights turned off and asked everyone to go even more nuts than usual (which for this show was not very nuts, though there were a few people jumping off the stage). The psychology is that if nobody can see you, you're more likely to dance. Another crowd favorite was "Daylight" off their new album Grand. Before 10, they ended their set with "Silver Tiles".

Lily Allen, backed by a full band, took the stage a little after 10:00. For the next hour she played a mix of old hits ("LDN", "Smile") and new songs. Fans were cheering and singing along to both. Lily jokingly suggested people must have been doing some illegal downloading, but she quickly followed that with a more serious "I don't care, I don't make any money off recordings". The UK celebrity's set closed with a cover of Britney Spears's "Womanizer".

Lily will be back soon, but at a much bigger venue next time. All tour dates HERE. Matt and Kim dates HERE. More pictures, and LA's setlist from the show, below...

Lily AllenLily Allen's It's Not Me, It's You, her follow-up to her successful debut Alright, Still is out Tuesday, and the vinyl picture disc edition is at the top of my shopping list. Catch her for free Tuesday night at Bowery Ballroom in NYC.

Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys drops his solo debut, Keep It Hid Tuesday. Singer-songwriter Ben Lee will donate a percentage of the proceeds from his new album, The Rebirth of Venus, to the FINCA Village Banking program, which offers small loans to low-income female entrepreneurs around the world. In a rather slow week for releases, I can also recommend Charles Spearin's The Happiness Project, Golem's wonderfully playful Citizen Boris, Miranda Lee Richards' Light of X, and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline's Coward.

What new releases can you recommend? Have I left anything off the list?

Lily Allen

MySpace Music the world's premiere online music portal, is excited to announce Lily Allen performing 3 Secret Shows on 3 continents. The British singer will put on intimate concerts for her MySpace fans in New York, Tokyo and London at no charge. Lily will kick off the global Secret Show series with a performance at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City on February 10th. The concert marks the first time a single artist will take part in multiple MySpace Secret Shows on a global level. The New York show, sponsored by TurboTax® Federal Free Edition, signifies Lily's debut concert celebrating the release of her new album, It's Not Me, It's You. Secret Show performances are exclusively for MySpace users who friend the MySpace Secret Shows profile and are then notified of all details via a MySpace bulletin. In addition, beginning February 10th, Lily's new album will be available to purchase for $3.99 for a limited time on her MySpace Music player through Amazon MP3.
The free NYC show also features Trouble Andrew and Matt & Kim on the bill. That is obviously a much better option than the show happening at the much larger Roseland Ballroom in April (that just went on sale). All tour dates HERE. MySpace show flyer below...

Lily Allen

On February 10th, 2009, Capitol Records will release It's Not Me, It's You, the follow-up to Lily Allen's critically acclaimed 2007 debut, Alright, Still. Recorded at Eagle Rock Studios in Los Angeles, the album finds Lily in top form, creating a record Blender's recent "In The Studio" feature described as "part God, part country and all middle finger." Allen wrote and recorded the album's 12 songs with producer Greg Kurstin (the bird and the bee), who worked with her on three songs for Alright, Still - "Everything's Just Wonderful," "Alfie" and "Not Big."

"We decided to try and make bigger sounding, more ethereal songs, real songs," says Lily, who will be touring the U.S. in the spring. "I wanted to work with one person from start to finish to make it one body of work. I wanted it to feel like it had some sort of integrity. I think I've grown up a bit as a person and I hope it reflects that."

All of those spring tour dates haven't been announced yet, but it looks like Lily will be taking Natalie Portman's Shaved Head out on the road with her in April. Surfaced dates include April 1st at House of Blues in San Diego and April 20th at Roseland Ballroom in NYC. The latter goes on sale Friday at 10am via LiveNation.com.

The Bird and The Bee have shows scheduled in February and March in support of their new album Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future (out now).

All known Lily Allen dates below...

Kate Nash @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - Jan 9, 2008 (Bao Nguyen)
Kate Nash @ Bowery Ballroom

UK singer-songwriter Kate Nash played to a packed, industry-heavy room at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night (Wed Jan 9, 2008) It was my first time seeing her - I missed Joe's Pub, Luna Lounge, and the Virgin Megastore shows. And I loved every second it....until the encore.

Kate seemed comfortable on stage - even in front of the tough NYC crowd. Her keyboard playing, singing, lyrics, backing band, and stage presence were all good. Her guitar playing wasn't bad either. If I left before the encore, I would have left raving about how much I loved it start to finish. I would have agreed with you that there's already a Regina Spektor and Lily Allen, but I would have just said that I'm happy to have all three of them (actually, I'll still say that).

But then came the first song of the two-song encore. It was a slow song, and she sang it solo - just her, her keyboard, and her microphone. It wasn't just that the song was kind of boring - it was that, at one point, she suddenly transformed into Regina Spektor in a fake-quirky-I-studied-live-Regina-Spektor-tapes kind of way. It turned me slightly against her at that moment. By the time her band came back on stage for the very final song (a high-energy one), I was turned off. I may have liked it more if they played it ealier in the show when the other high energy songs were making it hard to stand still. That said, I forgive her for what was a mostly-great show, and hopefully she (only 20 years old) eventually develops more of her own quirks.

I'll be surprised if Kate doesn't get more famous in the USA than Lily and Regina combined. Then again, I guess I won't be surprised if she doesn't. She definitely has the show to back up the songs though, and I hope to catch her at least one more time next time she visits.

16 yr old Jamie Lynn Spears isn't the only one

Lily Allen & Ed Simons

Popstar, tabloid favourite, chat show host. Lily Allen will soon be able to add mother to that list after the singer confirmed she is pregnant with her first child.

A spokesman for the 22-year-old said the pregnancy was at a "very, very early stage" and confirmed the father is Allen's boyfriend Ed Simons, one half of the Chemical Brothers.

Allen, whose single Smile went to number one last summer, has spoken on numerous occasions about her desire to start a family and leave music behind, in some accounts by the age of 25. She recently told the Sunday Times: "I'd like to live in the country and have a walled garden, and chickens and pigs."

As well as confirming the pregnancy, however, Allen's spokesman said that her second album, the follow-up to 2006's Alright, Still, would be released next year as originally planned.
Simons, 37, and Allen have been together since September of this year and are said to be "thrilled" by the news.[Guardian]

I have to finish what I started, and I guess that would be compiling the world's biggest collection of people dressed as Amy Winehouse for Halloween. I was already up to 92 pictures. By the end of this post you'll have seen another 166. Some are great, and more than a few paired Amy with her boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil. This photo falls into both of those categories....

Amy Winehouse

Even more looked less like Amy, and then there were many Amys that decided to hang out with Pete Doherty instead of Blake - a pairing that makes a lot of sense from the English musician drug addict tabloid point of view. This picture falls into both of those categories....

Pete Doggerty & Amy Doghouse
Amy Winehouse

In related news,

After Amy Wino's hideous performance at the MTV Europe Awards last night, she was booed when she accepted an award for Artists' Choice. Pete Doherty immediately came to her defense.

He was asked what advice he would give Wino, "I wouldn't give her any. She's fine. It's all bollocks. People should leave her alone. I went for a drink with her earlier today and she's totally fine. Perfectly healthy and happy.
"People are saying she's out of control, but she's not. She's a sensible girl and she knows what she's doing. She ain't doing nothing wrong." [dlisted]
Then there was Amy with Lily Allen...

Amy Winehouse

and even Amy with M.I.A....

Amy Winehouse

Now we'll get to more Amy's in a second, but first: To answer my own question, "no", Amy is no longer playing the MTVu Woody Awards or Saturday Night Live due to visa issues. Oh well - not a big loss considering how scary her last live appearance was. That video, and a zillion more Amy impersonators, below.....

"This weekend saw the Glastonbury Festival taking place but it also saw one of the wettest weekends that we’ve seen recently - it was p*ssing down quite a lot of the time. The result was that the Glastonbury site at Pilton, Somerset once again turned into a bit of a quagmire with ankle deep mud in many places. That however didn’t stop about 170,000 people enjoying all the music and other events on offer on the various stages throughout the site and there was something for everyone from all the latest hot bands to long-established acts like The Who – headliners on Sunday night."
