Lisa Gerrard of DCD at Beacon Theatre, 8/30/2012
Dead Can Dance

Lisa Gerrard would not be swayed when Dead Can Dance played the Beacon Theater on Wednesday night. Fans shouted her name between songs; she replied only with a serene smile. When she sang, the lyrics were in her own invented language. Dressed in a long black dress and a golden cape, standing before a hammered dulcimer, she was an emanation from earlier times, even though she was flanked by synthesizers....

Dead Can Dance's performance was a string of dirges and incantations. The band largely ignored the more up-tempo parts of its repertory, instead seeking the meditative and otherworldly. And when Ms. Gerrard was singing, that's what it achieved. Her keening, hovering voice can summon the tragic dignity of Baroque opera, the bite and swoop of Balkan music, the calm fatalism of Celtic ballads and the devotionality of plainsong. It was pure, wordless, rapturous sound. -[NYTimes]

Dead Can Dance completed their round of NYC shows with a second date at Beacon Theater last night (8/30). Much like last night (8/29, pictures), the evening started promptly at 8 (who I missed) with percussionist David Kuckhermann. Dead Can Dance hit the stage around 8:45, closing the evening out near 11 after no less than three encores. The shows, part of a reunion tour that saw the band take to the stages for the first time since 2005, were in celebration of DCD's new LP Anastasis, the focus of the evening.

Dead Can Dance at The Beacon Theatre, 8/29/2012
Dead Can Dance

Dead Can Dance played the Beacon Theatre on Wednesday (8/29), their first of two nights at the NYC venue with percussionist David Kuckhermann opening the show. Their 19-song set featured the entirety of their gorgeous new album, Anastasis, with plenty of DCD classics as well, plus a cover of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" (which was most famously done by 4AD all-star group This Mortal Coil which DCD have collaborated with). Dead Can Dance play Beacon Theatre again tonight (8/30) and tickets for tonight's show are still available.

Setlist and more pictures from Wednesday night's show are below.

Brendan Perry at Irving Plaza last year
Brendan Perry

As previously discussed, Dead Can Dance are back, and they're currently gearing up for a world tour in support of a NEW ALBUM in August!

The just-announced tour, with 15 dates in North America (listed below), kick-off in Vancouver and eventually make their way East for NYC shows at Beacon Theater on 8/28 and 8/29. Tickets for the Beacon shows go on sale Friday 3/30 at 9AM (and cost $55, $75, $95).

This will be the first time they've played as Dead Can Dance in NYC since Radio City in 2005, though Brendan Perry played Irving Plaza in 2011 as part of a tour with Robin Guthrie. Some belated pictures from that solo show are in this post.

About the new developments Brendan said...

"Myself and Lisa (Gerrard) are genuinely excited to be working together again in the studio, said Brendan Perry. "Writing began for the new album in the Autumn of 2011 and the final recording sessions will take place at Quivvy Studios in Ireland in the early part of this year. It will be a spring album to coincide with both natures reawakening and the group's subsequent rebirth."

"Our tour plans are also well under way and we have assembled a fine group of performers for the live concerts who have kindly put their own careers on hold in order to perform the music from our new album as well as some new arrangements from the archives."
The band is also giving away a new EP entitled Live Happenings - IV available for the price of your email address.
