We already posted Pitchfork's and SPIN's, so... here's Rolling Stone's top 50 albums of 2011. It's got tons of big sellers and major label players taking high spots like Adele, Jay-Z and Kanye West, Paul Simon, and Lady Gaga, but then something unexpected like tUnE-yArDs places at #13. There are also some odd inclusions like Wavves' Life Sux EP and then some albums you could only find on a Rolling Stone list like SuperHeavy (the supergroup featuring Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and others). They also give shots to Little Dragon, Josh T Pearson, Das Racist, Wild Flag, and many more. Check out the full list below...
Tycho (aka Scott Hansen) last toured North America this past October in support of his new album Dive, which is out now. Though he headlined MHOW during that tour, most of the dates were opening for Little Dragon, whose track, "Little Man," he has since remixed (listen below).
Tycho will go on his own headlining tour of North America in early 2012 which brings him back to Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 4. Tickets are not on sale yet but check ticketmaster for updates.
Most of the dates on that tour are being opened by Brooklyn duo Beacon (who released an EP last month), but they are not listed on the MHOW show. However, you can catch Beacon in NYC TONIGHT (12/16) at Cameo Gallery with Home Video and Warm Ghost.

SBTRKT & Sampha @ Nefertiti Jazz Club, Gothenburg, Sweden
Watching SBTRKT with vocalist Sampha, an inch from the small stage at Nefertiti Jazz Club in Gothenburg, Sweden back in August was a highlight of my trip over there for the Way Out West festival. At the time especially, SBTRKT's self-titled album was still in regular rotation in my brain and it was the first time I was seeing them live (I missed their july appearance at PS1). The only bummer was that I had to miss Little Dragon's conflicting festival set in order to catch SBTRKT which was even more frustrating because it was a hometown Little Dragon show (they're from Gothenburg) and it meant that Little Dragon vocalist Yukimi Nagano definitely wouldn't be showing up to play "Wildfire" with SBTRKT live. SBTRKT instead introduced the song by acknowledging that it was sung by one of their own residents and played her vocals from tape. It was still kind of amazing. Sampha sang live on the other tracks, and kept busy with various knobs and other instruments too. SBTRKT himself moves back and forth at lightning speeds from his multitude of electronic equipment to his drum set, sweating in the process. It did not seem at all like he was just "hitting play." Some unposted pictures from that Swedish SBTRKT show are in this post. I saw Little Dragon live a few days later in Brooklyn.
(After SBTRKT's set I ran through a park in Sweden on my way to catch who was playing after Little Dragon at the club they played at. I had no idea where I was - was just following directions. Fittingly, Yukimi passed me, in what seemed like the middle of nowhere, going in the opposite direction. On her way to say hello to SBTRKT I assumed.)
SBTRKT is now on a North American tour which arrives in NYC this week for two shows. The first, for the guys who wear masks on stage every night, is on Halloween at Bowery Ballroom with AraabMUZIK. The next is one night later at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Cubic Zirconia. Both are now sold out. Earlier on the tour SBTRKT stopped in Seattle where Shabazz Palaces made a surprise appearance to rap his remix verse live over "Wildfire" (kind of like Drake did in Toronto over the summer). Video from that Seattle show, more pictures from Sweden and all dates, below...

Hot, packed and dancing on Friday, New York's Terminal 5 was a scene rarely seen, in which nearly everyone in attendance was engaged and enthusiastic, their pretensions left at the curb. With Fredrik Källgren Wallin and Håkan Wirenstrand making melodies on either side of the stage and Erik Bodin hemmed in behind the raised drum kit, the job of crowd engagement rested squarely with Yukimi Nagano, and she carried its weight effortlessly. Barefoot and at ease onstage, flitting between impassioned and lackadaisical, Nagano is less charismatic than instructional, a how-to on letting go, or just never needing to, like a Sesame Street moral come to life. Her face has a sleepy, calming contour that's easily stared-at, and her dancing is carefree and natural, punctuated by timed punches to an immaculately choreographed and deceptively gigantic light show. Nagano's voice has a full, wavy heft that's remarkable to witness, strained at times and mathematically precise when required.- [Rolling Stone]Little Dragon headlined Terminal 5 on Friday (10/14), joined by Javelin, Donn T and a DJ set by Brooklyn Bowl regular Questlove (he plays this Thursday!). Pictures from the big show are in this post.
Little Dragon's appearance was part of a larger stretch of US dates that extends until the end of October, and included a DJ set the following night (10/15) at Yotel with Free Magic and Faso. Many of Lil Dragon's upcoming dates are with Tycho who played his own NYC show at Music Hall of Williamsburg over the weekend.
All dates, more pictures from Terminal 5 and the setlist, below....

San Francisco IDM artist Tycho (aka Scott Hansen) will release his new album, Dive, on November 15 via Ghostly. Check out the album's atmospheric single, "Hours," which you can download above. The album is available for preorder on iTunes now. The artwork and tracklist is below.
Tycho was supposed to be here for CMJ, but cancelled his CMJ plans because he's been added as an opener to Little Dragon's tour. He is not playing their show on October 14 at Terminal 5 though (tickets). Questlove (DJ), Javelin, and Donn T are. He will however play his own NYC show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 16. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Tycho will also perform at Decibel Festival in Seattle, WA today (9/30).

Little Dragon @ MHOW (by Amanda)
After a tight opening DJ set and great band introduction by Rich Medina, Sweden's Little Dragon played a set of vocal-driven live dance music to a sold out crowd last night (8/16) at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. It was a BV-presented show in honor of the release of their great new LP Ritual Union which they played many tracks from - most notably for me, the title track, which sent shivers down my spine when they played it early on.
Little Dragon @ MHOW (by Bao)
The four-piece band's approx-100 minute set included a mix of old and new and two encores, which even if planned, felt fan-driven. The room was going nuts - cheering as the band entered the stage, cheering even louder when otherworldly frontwoman Yukimi got on stage, and continued loud cheering throughout the show. Yukimi returned the love, letting us know multiple times how happy she was to be back in Brooklyn, and saying the crowd inspired her. People danced and sang along, and we all were brought to another place (the early 90s) when Little Dragon ended the first encore with a spot-on cover of Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)", mixed with a bit of the instrumental parts of Robin S's "Show Me Love".
If you missed, the band will be back as part of a tour before the end of the year. We have two sets of pictures from the Brooklyn show. Bao was backstage and on the stage while Amanda covered the front of the stage and balcony. Check 'em out, below...
The new Escape to New York festival is happening Southampton, NY this weekend. As mentioned, the music lineup features artists such as Patti Smith, Best Coast, Mates ot State, Psychedelic Furs, The Vaccines, of Montreal, and others. There will also be an acoustic stage with sets by Savoir Adore, Dead Leaf Echo, and many others we aren't too familiar with, and a dance tent, and a "dance off area" with sets by VHS or Beta (Live), Andy Rourke (of The Smiths), Alex English, Mister Saturday Night, "DJ Scotto of NASA", Rich Medina, and many others (also a lot of unfamiliar names). Tickets are still on sale and include weekend pass and camping options.
Escape to New York is not to be confused with Music To Know Fest which is in East Hampton one weekend later.
For the Psychedelic Furs, the Sothampton festival appearance is one of two upcoming NY shows. The other is at Irving Plaza with Tom Tom Club.
Rich Medina DJs in the Main Dance Tent at Escape to New York on Sunday. He has also been added as the opener to the BrooklynVegan-presented Little Dragon show happening at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday, August 16th. The show is sold out, though tickets are on sale for Little Dragon's upcoming show at Terminal 5. Meanwhile catch Rich at Le Poisson Rounge TONIGHT (8/3).
Best Coast, who play Escape to New York on Friday night, have a new Drew Barrymore-directed video which you can watch below...

Little Dragon, who are playing the sold out BV presented 'Ritual Union' album release show on August 16 at Music Hall of Williamsburg, have announced an extensive international fall tour in support of the album. That tour mainly includes overseas dates but there are a few stops in the US including Moogfest and one on October 14 at Terminal 5. Tickets for the large NYC show go on sale Friday (7/29) with an AmEx pre-sale starting Wednesday (7/27) at noon. All dates, including an LA show at Avalon, are listed below.
Ritual Union, the band's 3rd LP, was released on Peacefrog/EMI today (7/26). Purchase the album as LP/MP3/CD on Amazon. You can listen to a track below.
"I’ve been listening to their albums for a while and I've been a big fan. They seem to have a real, original direction. Every time they put out new material, it's always forward-thinking and changing up and doing something which no one thinks they’ll do. They're not conforming to what other people think is pop music or electronic or any particular genre. Even in terms of live shows, they’re pretty exciting. I was really keen on working with Yukimi, and they were really up for it."Yukimi's vocals have also been featured on albums by Maximum Balloon (Dave Sitek) and Gorillaz. All Little Dragon tour dates below...
"Paul Simon, Lee Scratch Perry and Jimmy Cliff play blinding sets at Glastonbury Saga stage. All over 70 Tony Benn oldest at 95 !" - James Osborn
"Best thing musically I saw at Glastonbury was probably SBTRKT on the Friday night ...quality stuff." - Joshua Saunders
Glastonbury 2011 (via Glastonbury.fm)
Glastonbury Festival took place in Worthy Farm in Pilton, England this past weekend. Tons of artists from all different backgrounds played the festival. The festival featured guest appearances, secret sets, and other interesting occurrences. Here are a few of the highlights.
Headliner Beyonce played a hits-heavy set with some pretty interesting cover song choices (King of Leon's "Sex on Fire," Etta James' "At Last"). But more even more interestingly, Tricky joined her on stage for a pretty inexplicable guest appearance on "Baby Boy." The trip-hop pioneer took a mic and uttered some sparse vocals as Beyonce and her backup singers belted the song. Video of the performance is below.
Speaking of things related to Massive Attack and Glastonbury, UK DJ Nick Warren, who would regularly DJ for Massive Attack in the '90s, said "My Highlight of Glastonbury Festival was James Blake live." James's set included the track "CMYK" off the 2010 EP of the same name in addition to tracks off his 2011 self-titled album. Some might say James's set was even explosive:
James Blake at Glastonbury
Festival attendees who were not part of the 75,000 watching Beyonce may have ended up at The Streets' set which took place at the same time. The show was apparently one of the Mike Skinner's last, who recently announced a breakup. Unfortunately, The Streets recently cancelled a trip NYC, but maybe they'll reschedule before saying their final goodbye. Video of The Streets' Glastonbury performance below.
This year's secret shows included UK Glastonbury vets Pulp and Radiohead.
It was Pulp's fourth Glastonbury appearance but their first for nine years and as they came on stage, frontman Jarvis Cocker told the crowd: 'We couldn't think of anything to get you so we brought the sunshine.'Video and setlist of Pulp's performance (which Kate Moss did not witness) below.
After their set, which included some of their biggest hits including Disco 2000 and Common People, he added: 'Thanks Glastonbury, obviously it's been a very important place for us. When we played in '95 things took off for us and we went in a strange orbit around the earth, and now we're back home in one piece.' [Daily Mail]
Radiohead brought Portishead drummer Clive Deamer as a guest to play with Philip Selway. Their setlist was almost entirely made up of The King of Limbs and In Rainbows tracks, and recent non-album material, except for Amnesiac's "I Might Be Wrong." They also surprised fans of their earlier work by playing "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" as an encore. Video of "The Daily Mail" and "Bloom" and setlist below.
Cee Lo, unlike at Coachella, showed up on time for his set, which included a mix of his own material and Gnarls Barkley stuff. He also covered Black Sabbath twice. Big Boi got lost in London, but also ended up showing on time for his set. Like Cee Lo, he still embraces past projects and included a good amount of Outkast material. Big Boi-collaborator Janelle Monae played the festival too. Video of her performance of "Tightrope" below. Catch her and Cee Lo (but not Big Boi) for free at Afro-Punk in August.
Battles brought Matias Aguayo on stage to sing "Ice Cream," the song he recorded lead vocals for on their recently released Gloss Drop. Video below.
British folk/jazz legends Pentangle, who reunited in 2008 but have not been very busy since then, played the festival. Their lineup includes Bert Jansch who is currently a Drag City-recording artist and released The Black Swan on the label in 2006, over 30 years after Pentangle originally broke up. Lauren Laverne of BBC 6 interviewed the band. They talked about the resurgence of folk music and how Bert is a fan of Fleet Foxes (who also played Glastonbury). Video of the interview below.

SBTRKT, who visits NYC for the first time in July, played a live set (pictured above). His Young Turks labelmate Jamie xx (of The xx) played a set too. Jamie's "Far Nearer" single is on sale now. Pressings are limited. Check out a soundcloud stream of the track below.
Another UK post-dubstepper Jamie Woon played the festival. 3AM writes, "During my bum breaks, I caught Jamie Woon's set and it was fantastic. I've heard a lot about this chap, but haven't listened to his stuff before. Sitting in the middle of a field with a pounding head and cider was the perfect way to be introduced to Jamie's chilled but strong, powerful tunes."
Speaking of dubstep crossover, UK singer Katy B brought her dubstep-leaning pop to Glastonbury as well. She plays a private show in NYC tonight (6/27). It will be her first.
Little Dragon wowed the crowd, according to VH1 anyway:
For the UK at least, this performance of their new song "Ritual Union" is a real coming-out party for the band, who absolutely deserve to be heard on a much wider scale. It's really difficult to make smooth music work in the middle of the day at a big outdoor festival, but Little Dragon pulls it off in style.Video of that and their whole setlist is below.
UK anti-folkie Emmy the Great covered The Pixies' classic "Where Is My Mind" with help from Tim Wheeler of the punky brit-poppers Ash. Full setlist below.
On a more negative note,
A senior member of David Cameron's Tory constituency has been found dead in a portable toilet at the Glastonbury festival.---
Christopher Shale, the chairman of West Oxfordshire Conservative Association, suffered a heart attack, sources believe.
His body was found in a portable toilet in the backstage area, where many celebrities and performers stay.
A story in the Mail on Sunday contained leaked sections of a strategy document Shale had drafted for David Cameron, in which he said the party can be perceived as "crass" and "always on the take".
Avon and Somerset police confirmed that the body of a man in his mid-50s had been found in the backstage area. A woman was seen being comforted by officers.
His body was found at 8.45am. An area between the Pyramid stage and the Other stage has been cordoned off. [Guardian]

UMO @ Glasslands
Unknown Mortal Orchestra headlined Glasslands on 6/4. Headless Horseman, Balkans, and Fort Lean rounded out the rest of the bill. Despite some gear issues, UMO played an hour long set that concluded with "How Can U Luv Me" to a relatively full crowd. UMO is currrently prepping to release their self-titled debut on Fat Possum on 6/21. Stream three songs at the label site and download one above along with a remix the band did for Little Dragon.
The Glasslands show was one of two NYC dates for UMO, who played Webster Hall with their tour-mates Portugal The Man the night before. They'll return both venues in September while on tour with Toro Y Moi who headlines Webster Hall on 9/14. Ava Luna is also on the bill and tickets are still available. One day later, 9/15, UMO return to Glasslands for another headlining show. Tickets are on sale for that too.
UMO also has a bunch of dates scheduled with Yuck.. All dates and more pictures from Glasslands below...

Miami New Times: The third Little Dragon album is half-done, right? How far along is the writing and recording?Ritual Union won't be here in April and May but Little Dragon will be back in NYC tonight (1/24) to play their 3rd sold out show in a row. The guitarless band played Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday (1/20) and Bowery Ballroom on Friday (1/21) after an appearance on East Village Radio.
Yukimi Nagano: All the songs are there. It's just waiting to be mastered. We want release it this spring and we can't wait! It will be called Ritual Union.
In the past, you've said, "We're a strictly no-guitar band." Does that mean Little Dragon is totally anti-guitar?
Yukimi Nagano: None of us plays guitar very well, so that's one reason. I guess we just feel like there are so many guitar bands out there. And we haven't felt inspired to have any guitars on any songs. The third album has no guitars. One day after a lot practice, maybe we'll make some kind of a guitar jam. Who knows? We try to stay open-minded!
Theophilus London joined the Swedes for both shows and will join them for the third time tonight. He also
promises a "big headline" date to be announced "soon" is playing Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 14th (tickets will be on sale soon). Theophilus will release a new EP, Lovers Holiday, on February 8th.
Brook Bobbins followed Little Dragon from Bowery soundcheck to East Village Radio and back to Bowery. His pictures of the whole day and some videos are below...
Little Dragon's previously mentioned NYC shows at Bowery Ballroom (1/21) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (1/20) have almost sold out, so they added a third at Bowery Ballroom (1/24). Tickets for the new one will go on sale soon. All three shows are being opened by Theophilus London.
Little Dragon's new album, Ritual Union, will see the light of day in April or May. Their last album, Machine Dreams, was released all the way back in 2009, but they have a new video for a song from that album. The song is "My Step", and you can watch the video, with all tour dates, below...

Little Dragon @ Le Poisson Rouge in 2009 (more by Matthew Taplinger)
Little Dragon announced an early 2011 US tour promoting the release of their upcoming third full length album. The tour makes two stops in New York at Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 20 and Bowery Ballroom on January 21. Tickets are on sale. No openers mentioned yet.
Little Dragon are currently on an international tour (Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand) supporting the Gorillaz, whose most recent album Plastic Beach features Little Dragon on two tracks; "Empire Ants" and "To Binge." LD vocalist Yukimi Nagano also performs both songs live with the band (you may have seen her do it at MSG or on Letterman).
Speaking of Gorillaz, Damon Albarn has announced not only an upcoming Gorillaz album, but two other albums as well. According to an interview with Stuff, Albarn has plans for a second album by The Good, The Bad, & The Queen, and for an album by a new band he's a part of. The new band features Tony Allen (also of The Good, The Bad, & The Queen), Flea, and some of Albarn's "favourite African musicians will be involved also."
Stuff also asked Albarn if Blur, who released a DVD documentary this year, have any plans for a world tour or new album. Albarn responded, "There won't be another world tour for me - for anything - for five to six years; it would seem unlikely. I have a young daughter and it's just not feasible, it's too long away from home. This has been great, but it's too much after a while and so, no, there won't be any tours for me for a while, I should think."
Albarn has also been recording a new Gorillaz album on tour with his iPad. He told NME "I've made it on an iPad - I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad," he said. "I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record." Albarn wants to release the album "before Christmas."
Gorillaz recorded a new single "Doncamatic" with British R&B singer Daley which will be officially released on November 22 in three formats. The CD version also includes a Joker remix of the song, the iTunes EP adds the third track "Album Mix Tape," and the 7 inch single is "Doncamatic" with the Paul Harris remix of "Empire Ants" on side B. All three formats are currently available for pre-order. There's also a video for the song. You can watch it below.
Little Dragon also recently collaborated with Dave Sitek on one of the tracks off this year's Maximum Balloon release. Sitek more recently remixed the track "Be Africa" by France's Bibi Tanga . It has nothing to do with anything really, but it's being offered as a free download, so grab that mp3 above.

"If anyone tells you the Gorillaz show at MSG on Friday was anything less than incredible, they're lying to you. Some bands you wish to see in their earlier stages, but now is the time to see Gorillaz. They have never been better, and there's no guarantee they can top this. This is their prime time, and the brilliance of their collaborative musical geniuses was amplified in concert. Not only did we see Damon Albarn in flesh - a personal idol - but he was accompanied by the incredible artists that were featured on Plastic Beach: Mos Def, Lou Reed, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, Little Dragon, members of The Clash, etc. Co-creator of Gorillaz, visual man Jamie Hewlett also peeped out from backstage to say hello - to whom Damon planted a big ol' kiss. The entire show was almost too epic to be true... You know when all your favorite superheroes get together and form a league? That is what this was. And this 'league' leader, frontman Damon Albarn, was clearly having the time of his life. He was constantly dancing, jumping around, running around the stage, hugging people - never keeping still unless he was playing the piano. Reminded us of his good old Blur days, sigh. They played almost all of their latest album and included old time favorites like "Clint Eastwood" and "Feel Good Inc."" [morningafterpills]After launching their tour in Boston, Gorillaz and N.E.R.D. played the giant NYC room that is Madison Square Garden on Friday night (10/8). As the quote above points out, there were many special guests in the house, some of whom are on the whole tour and some who just stopped by for the New York show (like Jay-Z though he was just there to watch).

Gorillaz play Boston on Wednesday (10/6) to kick off of the US leg of the Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour, hitting MSG two days later. Tickets are still available. The live band, led by Damon Albarn, will also be joined by a killer lineup up special guests including De La Soul, Little Dragon, Bobby Womack, as well as Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash. AND, to quote the legendary Onyx, "buh-buh-buh-wait-gets worse!", as N.E.R.D. will join Gorillaz as opener on all dates.
Opening with "Hot N Fun" and ending with "Lap Dance", N*E*R*D* played a three-song pop-up "show" on 9/23 in Times Square as part of a Honda promotion. A pic from that appearance is above and video from that show (as well as all tour dates) are below.
