King Khan & The Shrines

The trip goes across the Midwest and the Northeast, and includes a pair of NYC shows on Friday, October 15th at Santos Party House (tickets) and Saturday, October 16th with Live Fast Die at the Bell House (tickets).

A video that says its from King Khan & BBQ Show's June Asian tour (possibly before their falling out) and all tour dates are below...

Eric Davidson of New Bomb Turks, mid-flight
New Bomb Turks

Two great rock bands, the New Bomb Turks and Live Fast Die, reunited Saturday night (6/26) at the Bellhouse to help promote New Bomb Turks singer Eric Davidson's new book, We Never Learn: the Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001. It's an amazing chronicle of the unheralded rock scene that launched the careers of bands like The Hives and The White Stripes. There are stories of legendary underground bands, crazy tours, and general debauchery.

The evening started with Eric reading some passages from his book, and then showing some awesome videos of bands like the Dwarves, the Didjits, the Gories, and thee Headcoats. Colombus, Ohio (the Turks hometown) based The Ex-Whites got the music started with a solid set of sneering mid-western rock'n'roll. Next up was Brooklyn's own Live Fast Die playing their first show in almost a year. The two constant members Camaro Werewolf (Ethan) and Viking Thrust (Aaron) were joined by guitar player Eric Cecil and drummer Jeff Ottenbacher. Jeff is one of the hardest working drummers in NYC at this point, besides the occasional Live Fast Die gig, he also plays in Adult Themes, Golden Error, and Doug Gillard Electric. Live Fast Die (named after a GG Allin tattoo) dusted off some classic songs, like Got Nitedo and Forged in Flames, as well as some ones they had never played live, including "Dawn of the VHS" and "Pizza and Vomit". The set ended with Camaro playing while lying on his back, and the audience showered him with beer.

The rest of the review, tons of pics, and some video are below...

The Gaye Blades
Gaye Blades

Retro rock band Georgiana Starlington (which features ex-Black Lips guitarist Jack Hines) kicks off a monthly residency at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn tonight (7/29). Opening up the show will be Atlanta's The Gaye Blades, a group fronted by current Black Lips member Jared Swilley (who is probably still in town since Black Lips played Sunday's Pool Party show). We think it's probably the group's (Gay Blades) NYC debut.

UPDATE: We realized right after posting that Benjamin Jay Womack (Bobby Ubangi) was also a member of the Gaye Blades (and Black Lips) at one time. Ben "passed away on July 1, 2009, following a nine month battle with cancer. B. Jay was 35 at the time of his death." Bradford Cox called him "A great friend and an amazing human being." RIP.

Wild About JenkemThe Gaye Blades appear on the Wild About Jenkem comp put out by Killer Diller Records in 2008. The songs on the record, contributed by bands that include Coconut Coolouts (who played NYC over the weekend), Back C.C.s and Livefastdie (who played their their last show in NYC over the weekend) (see below), are all about jenkem, which, according to Wikipedia, is "a hallucinogenic recreational drug composed of noxious gas formed from fermented human feces. In the early and mid-1990s, several reports stated that Jenkem was being used by Zambian street children." Sounds great! Charles Gaskins, who heads the Killer Diller label, will also be DJing at Bruar Falls tonight (7/29); Bosco Delray rounds out the bill.

VICE: Why's Livefastdie breaking up?

LFD: It's just time to call it a day. Four years is a lot longer than I thought it would go. Weird punk's taken over. Hippy shit. No room left.

If the "Gaye Blades" sounds familiar, that might be because...

move over Easter Bunny, Here Comes Nobunny
No Bunny

Like Peter Cottontail's drunk, degenerate brother who arrives just a little late for Easter, Nobunny is rolling into town on Monday (4/13 at Cake Shop) and Tuesday (4/14 at Union Pool) to fill your baskets with rock n' roll. Eggcited?
Here's What Victim of Time says:

The mysterious Tucson local, Nobunny, is certainly hitting a chord that's turning ears all over into fuzzy, pink, and protruding embarrassments. Although, he's been kicking around the sud bucket for longer that most realize, it's seems like only recently has he poked his rabbit head up for the rest to take notice. Like a pop machine spewing out a small rivulet of hits, he is not necessarily onto something completely new. Both GG Allin, and The Ramones were touching on the same fizzy button years ago, and the formula of bubblegum fuzz is one oldest socks in the sack, but either way it's good to see it's back. Nobunny's ability to deliver blithesome songs with a maddened and frothy smile is simply brilliant. His bouncy and rollicking style conjures images of dirty bubbles rising over a landscape of unkempt, and insanely catchy hooks that will have the stuffiest of the arm folding camp dancing and acting like idiots within the first couple of chords.
Or, as the Tuscon Weekly put it, "If you've never been hugged by a horny, drunken Muppet, you should seek him out."

Nobunny @ SXSW 2009
No Bunny

I caught a sweaty Nobunny performance in Austin during SXSW, where he wore his dingy, furry rabbit mask and very little else. Slightly disturbing, but the show was one of the more fun I went to during the week. Nobunny's hard-to-find 12-song, 22-minute debut album, Love Visions, was recently reissued by Oakland label 1-2-3-4-Go and is recommended for those who dig The Ramones, The Trashmen, The Cramps, etc.

Nobunny now does his thing out of San Francisco and is touring the U.S. and Europe with like-minded Bay Area band Rock n' Roll Adventure Kids. Both NYC shows are also with New Hampshire's Live Fast Die. Jersey's Liquor Store also plays with them at Union Pool.

Tour dates, flyers and video after the jump....

King Khan w/ LiveFastDie
LiveFastDie

"Livefastdie are probably my favorite band in New York right now. Seeing them live is like watching three-to-five crazed gibbons spinning out of control on the edge of a towering precipice, if that were a rock and roll band who play funny songs that sound like the Ramones. (I know citing the Ramones is music-journalism shorthand for "I don't know any other punk bands," but in this case it's true.)" [VICE]
Continuing with our "Where's King Khan?" series (previous CMJ spottings = at the Antics Black Lips show & at his own show with BBQ), here's a set of pictures from Thursday (10/23) night's MyOpenBar party at Don Pedro's...
