The Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival returns with its fifth year starting June 4 and continuing every Tuesday through Labor Day. Brought to you by City Winery (where the shows take place), the free outdoor shows (they're behind the venue) go down from 5:00PM-7:30PM.
This Tuesday's kickoff show is with former Kinks guitarist/singer Dave Davies (who played City Winery last week). Other acts playing this year include Los Straitjackets, The English Beat, The Pietasters, Tim O'Brien, Rasputina and more.
Again these shows are free and open to all ages. Full 2013 Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival below...
The fabulous Fleshtones, NYC's progenitors of "super rock," will release a new EP in August titled Los Fleshtones Quatro x Quatro via Yep Roc records. Maybe they'll play some of it tonight (6/21) at Bowery Electric. The line-up for tonight's show is actually pretty cool all-around, with Steve Wynn & the Miracle Three, former Voidoid Ivan Julian, Swedish garage rockers Stupidity and Palmyra Delran. Tickets are still available.
The EP was recorded while on tour in Gijon, Spain and all four songs are in Spanish, including covers of two songs by Mexican rock band Los Johnny Jets. Says frontman Peter Zaremba:
The story of this record goes way back to our original bass player, Marek Pakulski, finding a bunch of albums including 'Los Johnny Jets A Go Go' in the trash in front of Joey Ramone's Lower Eastside tenement one night in 1977. Johnny Jets were a typical Mexican '60s rock and roll group -covering top-ten hits of the time like 'Wooly Bully' in Spanish with varying degrees of competence -- just the thing to appeal to The Fleshtones. Rather than the Spanish language versions of overly-familiar tunes like 'Hang On Sloopy', what really caught our ears were two more-or-less original tracks 'No Tengo Dinero' and 'Todos Queremos A Lupe' (which seemed to at least be inspired by Johnny Thunder's 1962 hit 'Loop De Loop'). We decided we would record these two songs ourselves as soon as possible. If nothing else, The Fleshtones are good for their word!In other news, The Fleshtones' record label, Yep Roc, turns 15 this year and they're throwing a three-day celebration at The Cat's Cradle in Carboro, NC on October 11, 12 and 13. No word on whether The Fleshtones will go down for it but confirmed YR15 artists include Dave Alvin, Chatham County Line, John Doe, Liam Finn, Fountains Of Wayne, Robyn Hitchcock, Los Straitjackets, Nick Lowe, Chuck Prophet, Eleni Mandell, Mayflies USA, Cheyenne Marie Mize, The Sadies, Sloan, Jim White and Master of Ceremonies John Wesley Harding. While three-day passes are sold out, you can still buy individual tickets to each night.
YR15 Flyer is below, along with a list of Fleshtones tour dates.
A message from Danny Amis
Dear Friends...That donation button is at Danny's website, as is a list of upcoming benefit shows including the one taking place at Maxwell's in Hoboken on June 29. The Raybeats, The Individuals, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley (of Yo La Tengo), The Schramms, and Tall Lonesome Pines all will play the NJ benefit for the sick member of the instrumental surf group Los Straitjackets. Tickets for the Hoboken show are on sale. Conan O'Brien is performing at the LA one which is also still on sale.
I can't thank you enough for your generosity.
Thanks to your help, and the upcoming benefit shows,
I no longer need to stress out over my medical bills. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
As many of you know, I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2010.
This forced me to stop working and touring.
The type of cancer I've been told I have is called
"Multiple Myeloma", cancer of the bone marrow.
I was caught off guard without insurance, but thankfully was able
to obtain insurance through the Affordable Care Act which
passed congress last year and for which I am eternally grateful.
Without that insurance I wouldn't have been able to get a necessary
procedure to save my life called a Stem Cell Transplant.
I underwent that procedure in May, and it seems to have been successful.
I now face a couple of months of recovery.
Your generosity has helped immensely, it's a very expensive procedure.
Unfortunately, high medical costs are something I'll have to face the rest of my life,
as this disease is incurable. I can only hope to knock it into remission for a while.
I'm going to leave this donation button up for those who still want to help.
Simply be aware that I'm not set up to accept tax-deductible donations.
Again, I can't thank you enough for your help!
Los Straitjackets go on a very long tour of their own without Amis this summer. The tour stops at City Winery on June 23 and 24 with Dave Alvin & the Guilty Ones. Tickets are available for both shows. It also hits Maxwell's on August 4 with Bill Kirchen. Tickets are on sale. All LS dates and benefit dates, below...
The Hold Steady @ Terminal 5 11/6/08 (more by Chris La Putt)
All four of the Hold Steady's scheduled NYC shows, June 8th - 11th, have sold out, though the group's second Music Hall of Williamsburg show (Thursday, June 11th) is part of the Northside Festival, which still has badges available.
Openers for those shows are Right on Dynamite (6/8 @ Bowery Ballroom), Mischief Brew (6/9 @ Bowery Ballroom), Gost Trio (6/10 @ MHOW) and Hype of the States (6/11 @ MHOW).
The Hold Steady's other upcoming dates include them playing as openers themselves for the Counting Crows (in the UK in May) and the Dave Matthews Band (in the US in June).
The band also just announced some new headlining dates including a Friday, July 24th show at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 15th at noon.
