SXSW was a blast, but days before that the Scion Rock Fest shook the college town of Columbus, Ohio (March 13th) with it's mix of metal gods of the past (DRI, Cannibal Corpse, Voivod, Shrinebuilder, etc) and killers of today (Ludicra, Landmine Marathon, Yob, Thou, etc). The one-day fest was spread throughout four of the town's venue, meaning any one person could only see a limited amount of the full lineup. Luckily I went to Columbus with my own camera, two other photographers (Jessie Barber and Christopher Mumma), and crossed paths with writer Kim Kelly along the way. If there is a metal show worth a damn within hundreds (thousands?) of miles from Kim, she'll be there. Her version of the story along with half of the pictures from the day (the rest HERE), below...

Atlanta no more! Scion Rock Fest 2010 will take place in Columbus, Ohio on March 13, 2010. The show will officially expand its reach from one to FOUR venues in Columbus: Circus, Newport Music Hall, Skully's, and Bernie's Distillery. 2010's lineup contains zero return bands from the 2009 festival but does contain sets from bands that released my favorite albums of last year (namely Magrudergrind, Yob, Absu) and played my favorite shows of last year (Lightning Swords of Death, Landmine Marathon, Trap Them, Black Tusk, Ludicra) in addition to sets from headliners Cannibal Corpse, Voivod, Shrinebuilder, Brutal Truth.

The rest of the lineup, the show flyer, and RSVP info is below...

Pierced Arrows are touring North America this February and March, including some dates with Lullabye Arkestra (whose recent album Threats/Worship is out on Vice). The bands play NYC-area shows on March 5th at Mercury Lounge and March 6th at Maxwell's. Tickets for Maxwell's go on sale Wednesday at noon. Mercury Lounge tickets go on sale AmEx presale Wednesday at noon. General sale starts Friday at noon.

Vice Records also recently signed BK band Growing, for a new record, Pumps, that's coming out April 6th.

Work on PUMPS began March 2009 at Ocropolis Studio in Brooklyn and was painstakingly arranged and mixed over a period of nine months. In between bouts of working at the studio, 2009 found Growing touring Japan and Italy for the first time, concluding the year with a second appearance at All Tomorrow's Parties and joining Fuck Buttons for a national US tour. 2010 tour dates to be announced soon.
"Hormones" off that record is posted above.

The very cool album art for the new Growing, and all Pierced Arrows tour dates (and video) below...

Charles Spearin of Do Make Say Think blowin' the horn for Broken Social Scene @ Mercury (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
BSS

Do Make Say Think has scheduled a few dates in the coming months, including 9/10 at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University (tickets are on sale) as well as Music Hall of Williamsburg and Bowery Ballroom on November 28th and 29th respectively (ticket info forthcoming). And DMST will keep it family, having invited along Charles Spearin's Happiness Project as well as guitarist Ohad Benchetrit's project, Years. Both released their LPs earlier this year on Arts & Crafts. (note: Years is not playing the Miller Theatre show).

Meanwhile, one Do Make Say Think side project will NOT be out on the road with the band, but ARE on their way to NYC in the coming months. The band Lullaby Arkestra features Justin Small of DMST and his wife Kat Taylor-Small, and they are a lot less crescendo, and a lot more melodic heaviness akin to Big Business, Tweakbird, or NYC's Orphan. Lullabye Arkestra are currently prepping their sophomore LP, Threats / Worship, out on Vice Records on Sept 1 and have scheduled an NYC show at Glasslands on 8/13. Check out "We Fuck The Night" downloadable above.

All dates below...
