Jonah Matranga & Ian Love at Gershwin Hotel (more by Tim Griffin)
Jonah might be playing that and a few more shows (listed below) solo, but - even more than before - Far is back...
Vagrant Records is proud to announce that Far has signed to the label. The recently reunited quartet is currently wrapping up their fifth full-length release in The Airport studio in Southern California with producer and guitarist Shaun Lopez at the helm and an early spring release date is expected.Far has added a few new West Coast shows in May and June, including one opening for Kings of Leon in Santa Barbara, CA. All dates below, but nothing on the east coast yet.
"We had no idea all this would happen," says vocalist Jonah Matranga. "We were just planning on getting to know each other again and playing a few shows... all of a sudden, the songs are coming, and it feels really good."
In the tail end of last year (while he was here for that Gershwin Hotel show), we caught up with Jonah Matranga and asked him about Far, his solo venture(s), and what it means to be back in lock-step with the guys again. Check out that interview below.
Meanwhile, some of Jonah's bandmates in New End Original are getting their old band back together as well. Split Lip, which became Chamberlain in 1995, will reunite with all original members to play a handful of shows in their native midwest, and eventually, the east coast. Tour dates are below.
The dates coincide with the re-issue of Chamberlain's emo-influential Fate's Got A Driver LP on color vinyl with bonus tracks.
Chamberlain's Fate's Got a Driver delivers more emotion in its 30 minutes than most bands do over the course of a career. The record is thought provoking and musically adventurous, a rare feat for a band whose members were barely past twenty when it was recorded. With nods to the Everyman side of Sunny Day Real Estate and the insistent melodicism of Fugazi, Fate's Got a Driver consistently impresses. It's all the product of lead guitarist Adam Rubenstein's thick, Fugazi-style progressions and David Moore's highly poetic lyrics... An amazing achievement by such a relatively young band. -[allmusic]Jonah discusses Lupe Fiasco, Sepultura, Fort Minor, Radiohead, and more, in the interview below...

M.I.A. & Kanye & friends (via Kanye's blog)
Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and N.E.R.D. are playing Madison Square Garden again on August 5th. Tickets go on sale Friday June 13 @ 10am. I didn't forget about Rihanna - her name doesn't seem to be on the bill this time around.
Kanye has a new video for "Flashing Lights". N.E.R.D. has a new video. Their last show at MSG was in May. Kanye then played another NYC show the next night and surrounded himself with half-naked girls dressed as astronauts. Video from that below....
At Tuesday night's Madison Square Garden stop on his national "Glow in the Dark" tour, West rapped and roamed around an otherwise empty stage, assuring that all focus would land entirely on himself.
The vast staging mimicked a lunar landscape in a world far away, underscoring "Glow's" intergalactic theme, which served the star's ego as well. At one point in the night's "Lost in Space" scenario, West met a female space alien who, naturally, recognized him.
"You're the biggest star in the universe," she exclaimed.

N.E.R.D. are opening for Kanye West at MSG tonight. I hope they play a much smaller venue in NYC before their new album comes out next month. Check out their performance from Letterman last night.....
Kanye is on tour with Rihanna, N.E.R.D. and Lupe Fiasco. The NYC show (I'm amazed they never added a 2nd one) at Madison Square Garden is tomorrow (Tuesday, May 13, 2008). Tickets are sold out. All dates below....
Yo, anybody that's not a fan; don't come to my show. For what?! To try and throw ya'll two cents in? Ya'll rated my album shitty and now ya'll come to the show and give it a B+. What's a B+ mean? I'm an extremist. It's either pass or fail! A+ or F-! You know what, fuck you and the whole fucking staff!!! I know I shouldn't dignify this with a comment, but the reviewer threw a jab at all the artists. I just wanna know when was the last time you enjoyed yourself. If you can't have fun and lose yourself at this tour it's a good chance you're a very miserable person. I actually feel sorry for you guys. Your job forces you to not have fun anymore. Grab a drink, holla at some nice girls, and party bitch!! You don't know shit about passion and art. You'll never gain credibility at this rate. You're fucking trash! I make art. You can't rate this. I'm a real person. I'm not a pop star. I don't care about anything but making great art. Never come 2 one of my shows ever again, you're not invited and if you see me...BOW!! This is not pop, it's pop art! [Kanye West - ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY'S NOT INVITED!]And after some controversy with Kanye walking off stage in Houston on Friday....
Lupe Fiasco on MuchMusic
Lupe Fiasco is playing an 'intimate' (even more intimate than the last intimate one in NYC) at SOB's on May 14th. Tickets are on sale. Kanye West showed up last time Lupe played SOB's. Lupe & Kanye are going on tour together starting in April. The SOB's show is actually the night after they play Madision Square Garden.
nobody loves Kanye like Kanye

Lupe on stage w/ UNKLE @ Vegoose 2007 (CRED)
The Lupe Fiasco one-off, record-release show at Irving Plaza is this Tuesday December 18th. Then he's taking a Hawaiian vacation, and then he'll start a tour in January that will eventually bring him back to NYC on February 2nd for a show at Nokia Theatre. Tickets for that one aren't on sale yet, but they are for a lot of other dates.
Nah. I was thinking about this one, though, I was kind of pondering the importance of a Grammy nomination. It can really affect sales and things of that nature. We’ll see if I win one. It’s starting to be the little things that matter to me. Like, last night I got invited out to see The Cult, with Ian Astbury, and he shouted me out on stage. I’m a big fan of Ian Astbury. I think The Cult is a little bit before my time, but I’m a big fan of Ian Astbury’s due to a lot of the stuff he’s done with UNKLE. So, yeah, it’s more those little things and occurrences, which are the milestones. Like, “Frank Sinatra went over to Sammy Davis Jr.’s house and they had a barbeque.” It’s starting to be like, “Damn, guess who I was just with yesterday?” I got a chance to perform with UNKLE, which was phenomenal. It was with a live band, we were all in Vegas. Some people might be like, “Who the hell is UNKLE?” But for me it’s like, “Damn.” Those are the stories I’m gonna tell my kids. [Lupe to the Village Voice]This is the part where I was going to post Lupe's entire new album for you to download for free, but then I read THIS, so you'll have to just stream it instead. All dates below....
We don't have many releases left to look forward to in 2007 (hence the appearance of so many end-of-year lists), but in the world of on-the-indie-rock-radar hip hop, there are actually two potentially (I haven't heard the leaks) awesome albums still coming out (and one of them is not the new Daft Punk). They are: Ghostface Killah's The Big Doe Rehab (out Dec 4), and Lupe Fiasco's The Cool (out Dec 18).
Vampire Weekend added a 2nd NYC show at Bowery Ballroom (Jan 30). Tickets go on sale Friday. The first one (Jan 29 - the same day their new album comes out) is almost sold out. Wu-Tang Clan (and more VW) tour dates HERE. Info on Lupe's upcoming NYC show, HERE.
Tickets go on sale Wednesday for a December 18th Lupe Fiasco "record release" show at the Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza. The new record is called "The Cool", and the first single "Superstar" is streaming at Lupe's page.
I saw Lupe Fiasco perform last week - ONE WHOLE SONG (and with a member of Fall Out Boy) at the mtvU awards at Roseland - the same show Spank Rock was drunk at. That's Lupe in the photo above. It was taken by Leia Jospe for BrooklynVegan. So were all the other pictures in this post. More photos of Lupe, Rilo Kiley (played 2 or 3 songs), Annie Lennox (accepted an award), Peter Bjorn and John (nominated, men about town), Spank Rock (played 2 songs), Tokyo Police Club (played 2 or 3 songs, then explored the basement of Roseland with us) & other characters present at the event....
Rilo Kiley's Street Team (CRED)
Calling all Rilo Kiley fans in the NYC area!!I wonder if it's better to have seen them before, or to not have seen them before. Lupe Fiasco is also rumored to be playing (along with Tokyo Police Club, Spank Rock and The Academy Is). Annie Lennox is being honored and will be there. Amy Winehouse will not (though I can't speak for the many impersonators).
Rilo Kiley will be performing at the 2007 MTVU Woodie Awards this Thursday, 11/8/07 at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC. We need true, dedicated COLLEGE fans to be part of this show. For FREE tickets send an e-mail ASAP to email@example.com and please include the following info:
-Where do you go to college?
-What is your favorite Rilo Kiley song?
-Are you available from 6pm to 10pm this Thursday evening?
