Judge

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...

Ariel Pink, Tamaryn, The Fresh & Onlys, Bobb Trimble's Flying Spiders, Mike Wexler, Home Blitz @ Pioneer Works
This is the first night of the two-day Mexican Summer fifth anniversary, and it's very stacked. Tonight we get nostalgic pop from headliner Ariel Pink, gothy shoegaze from Tamaryn, psych pop from The Fresh & Onlys, a rare live appearance from '80s cult folk icon Bobb Trimble, a newer folk singer who owes a bit to such cult folk icons, Mike Wexler, and bare-bones rock from Home Blitz. There's also free beer from 6:30 - 8 PM.

Judge @ Saint Vitus
For this year's CBGB Festival, we at BrooklynVegan contributed by presenting this show with reunited NYHC vets Judge. It's a treat to catch these guys while you still can, and Saint Vitus seems like just the place to see 'em these days. Sold out.

Vessel, Pete Swanson, Container, Huerco S. @ 285 Kent Avenue
Tri-Angle signed producer Vessel makes the kind of dark, murky stuff we've come to expect from the boutique label, and tonight he teams with noisemaker Pete Swanson, Container, and minimalist producer Huerco S.

Hanni El Khatib, Bass Drum of Death @ Bowery Ballroom
You get two sides of the garage coin with this tour: BDoD unleash party-friendly rippers, where Hanni El Khatib are more on the soulful side. This is the first of two NYC shows for these two.

Benoit and Sergio, Evan Michael, Travmatic @ Cameo Gallery
DC-area DJ duo Benoit and Sergio are working on their new full-length and will perhaps be giving folks an early taste tonight. You can check out their mellow new single, "Adjustments," below

Lux Perpetua, Coke Weed, Air Waves @ Coco 66
Maine combo Coke Weed are descendents of The Velvet Underground's chugging psych rock -- a sound that never seems to go out of style and they do it well on their current album, Back to Soft, which you can stream in full below.

Hunters, Total Slacker, Skimask, Sleepies @ Death By Audio
NYC's Hunters are about to play a gazillion shows at CMJ next week, but you'll still get one more chance before then to see them at tonight's album release show. Making the bill doubly cool: Brooklyn punks Sleepies, who might also play locally a ton, but have a very underrated album out.

Big Ups, Flagland, Butter The Children, Big Neck Police @ Shea Stadium
Speaking of bands that play NYC a lot... Most notable on this bill is post-hardcore rippers Big Ups and poppy shoegazers Butter the Children.

Pop. 1280, Haunted Horses, Yvette, Dillon James Rego @ Silent Barn
And for some more local regulars: the gothy Pop. 1280 and the experimental Yvette team up with Seattle's Haunted Horses (who also played NYC last Sunday) tonight at Silent Barn.

Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, Ami Dang, Kid Kamillion, Dirtyfinger @ Glasslands
Baltimore party starter Spank Rock plays what will surely be a wild show with frequent collaborator Amanda Blank and more. Part of the CBGB Festival

Two Door Cinema Club, St. Lucia @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club mix Phoenix-ish melodicism and the mathy angles of Foals for an easy-to-swallow pop pill. Peace were supposed to be on this show but dropped off.

Francesco Tristano, Byron Westbrook @ Issue Project Room
IPR continues its 10-year Anniversary tonight with Barcelona-based pianist Francesco Tristano and Brooklyn electronic composer Byron Westbrook.

School of Night, Grand Resort @ Mercury Lounge
School of Night is the new project of Darby of The Antlers, and if you like the airy layering of that band, much of that sound is to be found here too.

The Spits, Useless Eaters @ Mercury Lounge
Practicing a mix of Ramones and Misfit-isms drenched in battery acid and too many downers, The Spits have quietly been ruling the punk underground for years. Don't miss Memphis' Useless Eaters who are pretty ferocious live and open the show.

The Thrilling Adventure Hour @ The Bell House
Old time radio serials come to life -- satirically -- with stellar cast, including Paul F. Tompkins, Paget Brewster, John Hodgman, Marc Evan Jackson, and Craig Cackowski. Sold out.

Nicole Atkins, Puss In Boots, Bad Girlfriend, Kay Kasperhausen @ The Bowery Electric
One of the better CBGB Fest shows tonight, featuring Nicole Atkins, Norah Jones' country band, Puss n' Boots, and garagey girl group, Bad Girlfriend.

Holloys (solo set featuring member of Rye Coalition), Wreaths, Danny Leo (ex-Native Nod) @ The Grand Victory
If you were wondering what it would sound like if a member of NJ rock n rollers Rye Coalition made jammier, trippier, and just overall weirder music, Holloys is the project for you. Fellow NJ band Wreaths is on this bill too.

Gold Panda, Slow Magic, Voices of Black @ Webster Hall
Gold Panda has been churning out some excellent IDM over the past few years, and he keeps getting bigger too: this is his largest headlining show in NYC yet.

Tony Bennett @ Radio City Music Hall
One of the last great crooners, at 87 Tony Bennett is still going strong. Tickets are still available.

Ginger Baker @ Iridium
One of the greatest living drummers of any genre, Ginger Baker is best known as one third of Cream but is a master of many styles. This is his second of a five-night run at Iridium, and tonight's show is part of the CBGB Festival too. 8 PM and 10 PM shows.

Ian Anderson @ Beacon Theatre
Let their be flutes! The Jethro Tull main man will be peforming Thick as a Brick in full.

Wolf People, Wild International, Bennio Qwerty @ Knitting Factory
If you'd like Tull vibes in a younger package, UK band Wolf People sound like they could be from 1973 -- proggy, riffy, and the occasional wind instrument. Quality locals Bennio Qwerty open this show.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Jackson Scott @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Portland's jam-friendly psych rockers have been on tour pretty much this whole year and tonight is their third NYC show this year.
