"The worst group in history just finished on stage at the Fader Fort, Sleigh Bells." - Daniel Berkal

"Sleigh Bells just blew the doors off the Fader Fort" - Enthusiastic Amateur

Sleigh Bells

"M.I.A.-anointed Sleigh Bells closed the showcase with their bombastic drum-and-bass combination, a live show that's growing leaner, tighter and stronger, like a prizefighter before a big payday. Alexis Krauss, Sleigh Bells' frontwoman, is just soaked in superstar potential. She screams, coos, pumps her fist, snaps her head back in the "sexy-lady-moshing" style Sophie described earlier this week. Though the band is just Krauss and guitarist Derek Miller, they sound massive on songs like "A/B Machines," "Crown on the Ground" and "Infinity Guitars." With cred in tow, Sleigh Bells' spring release should be one of the year's most anticipated records." [Time Out]
The review is from the Pitchfork show Sleigh Bells played at SXSW. The pictures are from the Fader Fort where they went on right before Bone Thugs n Harmony!

I previously posted that "M.I.A. is playing NYC & LA Hard Fests & Oya (lineup), co-releasing the new Sleigh Bells". An update to that is that Sleigh Bells are opening the NYC show which is taking place at South Island Field @ Governors Island on Saturday, 7/24, 5pm. Blaqstarr, 12th Planet, Destructo, Nguzunguzu, Borgore & more" are also on the "Hard" bill. "$40 Pre-Sale Tickets / $45 Limited Advance Tickets / $55 Advance & Day of Show Tickets + $5 Round Trip Ferry Fee for all tickets". On Sale Fri 3/26 at 12:00PM. More pictures from Fader, and a video, below....

M.I.A. @ Outside Lands 2009 (more by Chris Graham)

M.I.A. will be playing "HARD Fest" shows in L.A. and NYC this July - her first scheduled US shows for 2010. The L.A. date is July 17th at the Los Angeles State Historic Park. NYC's is July 24th.

Tickets for L.A. go on sale Friday, March 26th. NYC ticket info TBA.

M.I.A. has a new record due this year (possibly in June). Her Neet Recordings will be putting out Treats, the debut record from Sleigh Bells (who play SXSW and have plenty of other shows coming up), in conjunction with (as previously mentioned) Mom + Pop Records on May 11th. Neet has also signed Blaqstarr.

M.I.A's other shows include Øya Festival in Oslo on August 10th-14th, and Underage Festival in London on August 1st.

A flyer for the L.A. show, the current Oya lineup, and a teaser video for an M.I.A. song called "THERES SPACE FOR OL DAT I SEE" is posted below...

Happy Holidays! I take on more than I can handle. That results in a lot of unposted content. In the name of catching up, while also taking it easy during this final week of the year, here's some of that lost material.

Tenacious D
The Dead Weather

For what was the worst day weather-wise for San Francisco's Outide Lands Festival, its last day (Sunday, August 30th) may have been the best musically. Cold fog and wind took the place of cloudless, sunny skies, but those who attended witnessed sets by Modest Mouse, the Dead Weather, the Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, Calexico, Matt & Kim , and soul legends Robert Randolph and Betty Layvette, and MIA, who complained via Twitter about the fest's substitution of Tenacious D for the Beastie Boys, then covered two Beasties songs, "Intergalactic" and "Sabatage, in her set.

Scrambling to find replacement headliners for the Beastie Boys was a common theme for festivals in summer '09, after the group was forced to cancel all dates when Adam Yauch was dianosed with cancer (he's since had sugery, and reports say that part of his health regiment is a vegan/organic diet). Beastie Boys' slot was filled by Jay-Z at All Points West and Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Lollapalooza

Prefuse 73 @ Terminal 5 in November 2008 (more by Zach Stern)
Prefuse 73

David Ellis is an artist born into a family immersed in music. His paintings are often recorded in a form of digital time-lapse animation he calls motion painting. Like jazz, these works provide Ellis with an opportunity to combine ideas with collaborators and work solo within a form that promotes improvisation and spontaneity.

Ellis often stages events when exhibiting his motion paintings, inviting musicians, performers, and sound artists to interpret the work live. His motion painting, Paint on Trucks in a World in Need of Love was exhibited at MoMA. Ellis further explores sound with kinetic installations that produce analogue sequences in rhythm. His latest work, often in collaboration with composer Roberto Lange, deconstructs the inner workings of player pianos to create sprawling sculptures that automatically play percussive rhythms with recycled typewriters, buckets, bottles and cans.

(Le) Poisson Rouge is hosting an opening party for David Ellis: Recollect on Tuesday, November 10th. Performing at the free show (besides Ellis himself) will be Prefuse 73, Jon Hopkins and Mixhell.

Not free, but also a party at (Le) Poisson Rouge, Buraka Som Sistema are back. Maluca and DJ Geko Jones open the show which takes place at the West Village venue TONIGHT (11/4) @ 11pm. Be prepared to stay out late.

All Buraka Som Sistema dates, a video of Ellis painting a piece and a song from Prefuse's latest LP, Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian, which came out earlier this year, and more below...

Outside Lands

When Tenacious D was asked - eventually - to step in as the closing act for the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival next Sunday after the Beastie Boys were forced to drop out at the last minute, the guys didn't hesitate. In their mind, the substitution seemed like a natural fit.

"I think there are more similarities than differences, really, when you put us together," announced Jack Black, who formed the folk-metal duo with his friend Kyle Gass long before he became a big-time Hollywood star. The band may not have been up to much since starring in the feature film "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny" three years ago, but when we spoke to them last week they promised, "The D will be in fine form."

SF GATE: Who got the call when the Beastie Boys had to drop out?

Jack Black: I assume they just called our manager. We actually have the same manager as the Beastie Boys.

The Outside Lands Festival kicks off today, Friday, August 28th, and runs through Sunday in San Francisco, California. You can watch some of it live at YouTube.

Neither M.I.A. nor Tenacious D will be viewable on the stream, but Built to Spill and The Dead Weather will be. Full lineup below...

Built to Spill @ the 2009 Siren Music Festival (more by Tim Griffin)
Built to Spill

"Over the past 17 years of touring, Built to Spill have become as famous for their cover songs as for any of their own material, having paid homage live to acts as diverse as M.I.A., David Bowie, the Talking Heads, Neil Young, Macy Gray, Modest Mouse, Ozzy Osbourne and on and on. The band is so fond of playing other people's songs that according frontman Doug Martsch, "when we play a cover it's the highlight of the evening for me every single night."

But as one would imagine for a band that has built such a reputation, BTS take the art of the cover song very seriously. "We're like a real cover band when we do covers -- we try to do it straight up for the most part," Martsch tells Spinner. "We don't make a joke out of it. We're trying to convey how great that song was in the first place."" [Spinner]

Tickets are still on sale for the four upcoming NYC Built to Spill shows. That includes the two at Webster Hall, the two at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and two-day passes for each venue. Those previously-announced October shows are part of a much larger tour. All dates, and a few videos of BTS playing covers, below...

The Very Best

The Very Best (production duo Radioclit and Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya) played a late-night show at (Le) Poisson Rouge on July 18th. They were joined by two backup dancers (one of which was on crutches!), and Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend for one song. He stopped by to contribute his part on "Warm Heart Of Africa." That track and two new remixes are posted above.

Ezra Koenig @ Le Poisson Rouge - July 18, 2009 (by Kwesi Abbensetts)
The Very Best

The Very Best's debut record, Warm Heart of Africa, is due to come out on Green Owl, the NYC-based record label that was founded by Benjamin Brewer (the father of M.I.A.'s child), on September 22nd (available digitally August 25). Ezra and M.I.A. both sing songs on it. That album is not to be confused with Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit Are The Very Best which was the mixtape (that contains songs by Vampire Weekend and M.I.A.) they released for free in 2008. Grab that above.

On Saturday night (7/25) (exactly a week after the LPR show), Radioclit brought "their wild monthly London residency, SECOUSSE, to the States for an all out UK vs. BK battle of the riddims." And by "the states", they mean Supreme Trading (or the former Supreme Trading building at 213 N 8th St) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Green Owl artist Janka Nabay was also on the bill.

"While many genres of African music have made the crossover to the west (Afrobeat, Highlife, etc), Sierra Leone's traditional Muslim street songs, or Bubu music, have not. The king of Bubu is Ahmed Janka Nabay, an amazing humanitarian musician whose life has been shaped by Sierra Leone's civil war." [Straw vs Gold]
According to Green Owl, it was the king of Bubu's first "official" NYC show, but he didn't have to come too far; Ahmed Janka currently lives in Philadelphia. He wore a traditional Rafia costume at the show, that he made earlier that day....

Ahmed Janka @ Supreme Trading - July 25, 2009 (by Ryan Muir)
The Very Best

AND, it ends up that Saturday night's show at Supreme Trading was also a sort-of-secret Very Best show. Radioclit did DJ, but then performed with Esau too (no Ezra this time though). More pictures from both shows and the new album artwork, below...

Street Scene

"STREET SCENE, one of the nation's longest running music festivals, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with two full days of music Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29. The Black Eyed Peas, M.I.A., Thievery Corporation, Modest Mouse, The Dead Weather and Cake are among the more than 35 acts that will bring the streets of downtown San Diego's East Village neighborhood alive with music and entertainment from 4:00 PM to midnight daily. The venue site will include Tailgate Park (adjacent to Petco Park) in the heart of East Village, incorporating 14th Street as the main thoroughfare and bordered by Imperial Avenue to J Street."
2009 is the 25th anniversary of the festival which was launched in 1984. This year's festival also has WAVVES on the lineup, which means three shows total now scheduled for the band. Full lineup below...

It's impossible to see everything at Coachella. Here's more of what one photographer saw...

Continue reading "Coachella 2009 - Day 2 in Pictures "

"M.I.A. gave the main stage at Coachella her best shot. It just didn't work out.

After a strong start, a few hiccups, and a somewhat listless finale, the Grammy-nominated new mom declared at the end of her hour-long set in the desert that "next time I'm back in the tent."

"I want to be in the sweat," she said.

M.I.A. had performed twice in smaller tents at the music festival, in its tenth year and one of the nation's most prestigious.

She noted earlier, "I really don't know how to bring it on the main stage." And her live show staples--climbing on speakers, dancing body-to-body with the crowd--didn't quite fit the new digs. When she tried to bring some of the audience onstage Saturday night, security guards thwarted most fans.

M.I.A. ended up on a platform above the crowd performing "Bird Flu," and asked when it was over: "Can we get some order in the place? My baby's waiting." She gave birth to a son in February, a few days after the Grammys." [Times Standard]

Plenty of fans did get on stage too - security was definitely not happy about it though. M.I.A. was playing in Amy Winehouse's place last night. The show didn't seem as bad (on the stream) as the above review makes it sound. Then came the Killers (still streaming as I type this actually) and Day Two of the three-day festival was over. Earlier in the day Glasvegas cancelled their set. What I saw of Beirut's performance on the stream sounded great.

Friday night Paul McCartney played "a two-and-a-half-hour performance of solo hits from the '70s, new songs released by his alter-ego the Fireman, plus 20 Beatles classics". Morrissey and Leonard Cohen played the same day.

Sunday is my favorite day. We'll have lots of pictures soon. In the meantime, below are more stills from the M.I.A. stream...

MIA @ the Diesel party in NYC (more by Kyle Dean ReinforD)

"Sri Lankan pop sensation M.I.A. has been added to the Coachella festival's Saturday night lineup, the event's producers announced today via their Twitter feed. M.I.A. replaces Amy Winehouse, who was forced to cancel her appearance earlier this month due to an assault charge in the U.K.

Coachella will mark the rapper/singer's first public appearance since the birth of her son last month and her performance of "Paper Planes" with Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne at the Grammy Awards in February.

M.I.A. joins other late additions to the Coachella bill including Devendra Banhart, the Orb, Chemical Bros., Murder City Devils and Etienne de Crecy." [Billboard] (thx Tye)

"Kuduro is the new baile funk. No, check that; kuduro is the new kwaito. Or was that grime? Reggaetón, maybe?

For a particular sort of cultural trainspotter, tracking down the newest strains of dance music from diverse parts of the world with the assiduousness of a modern-day Alan Lomax, this Angolan style is the current ne plus ultra.

Built on the fundamentals of house music, with the chilly, playful textures of electro and early rave and faint echoes of the Caribbean, kuduro is full of coarse break beats and bass lines that vibrate just at the edge of collapse. It's lately gained traction in Europe, particularly in Portugal, which has a significant population of immigrants from Angola, a former Portuguese colony.

That's where the Lisbon trio Buraka Som Sistema hails from.
[NY Times saw them DJ at Santos Party House in October]

Portuguese DJ's/producers João Barbosa (Li'l John), Rui Pité (DJ Riot), Andro Carvalho (Conductor) and Kalaf Ângelo - together, Buraka Som Sistema - will visit our country again in 2009 for a tour that brings them from Coachella in Indio, CA to NYC to play Bowery Ballroom on Saturday, May 2nd. Tickets are on sale now.

Unlike last time they visited NYC in October though, this time they'll be with "Full Live Set-Up" which is being further advertised as an "explosive multi-decked live show, involving physics-defying dance troupes, serious percussion and rotating rapid-fire MCs."

Fabric is reissuing/releasing Buraka Som Sistema's full-length debut, Black Diamond, on April 7. Its single, "Sound of Kuduro," featuring M.I.A., is out now at iTunes, and appeared as a bonus track on last year's Kala reissue. The video for that song, and all tour dates, below...

M.I.A. who wouldn't risk her health to perform on the Oscars, and Peter Gabriel who wouldn't compromise his integrity to perform on the Oscars, lost the title of "Best Song" to Slumdog's Millionare's "Jai Ho", the song credited to A.R. Rahman who also won a few minutes before that for the entire soundtrack too.

A very, still pregnant M.I.A. (she is due any second if she didn't have the baby already) performed on the Grammys Sunday night with Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and T.I.. She was also nominated, but didn't win. Maybe she'll win the Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire.

She left the above message on her MySpace blog before the Grammys. On the Tavis Smiley show she talked about being accused of being a terrorist, being the only Tamil in the Western media which gives her the platform to speak for the Tamil civilians, not to be confused with the Tamil Tigers. Watch the video below...

TMZ can confirm that Chris Brown just entered an LAPD station, where he turned himself in to police.

Chris is being investigated by the LAPD for an alleged domestic violence felony battery that occurred early this morning near Hancock Park in L.A. Police officials said earlier today they may arrest Brown when they found him. Well, now they know where he is.

According to the female victim -- who cops refuse to identify -- she and Chris got into an argument which turned violent. Cops say when they arrived to the scene, Brown had split, but the woman had "visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker."

Brown and his girlfriend Rihanna were together earlier last night, attending Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party -- and both canceled their scheduled performances at tonight's event.

Brown is currently being interviewed by detectives. [TMZ]

Radiohead did show up the Grammys, as did an even MORE pregnant M.I.A.. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss took best album (for an album that came out on indie label Rounder Records). Video of Radiohead and M.I.A.'s performances, and a list of all winners (including Daft Punk) below...

The Dark Knight, the superhero thriller that was expected to make history as the first comic-book adaptation to take a best-picture nomination, and Gran Torino, which the Hollywood veteran starred in and directed, were left out of the contest for Oscar's top prize.

Instead, the far more serious Holocaust-themed The Reader took the fifth berth and its director, Stephen Daldry, also managed to slip into his category.

The other nominees announced for top prize in the 81st Academy Awards Thursday morning in Los Angeles followed the script of the prognosticators: the era-spanning fable The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which led the crowd with 13 nominations; gay-themed political biopic Milk; TV-landmark drama Frost/Nixon; and romantic crowd-pleaser Slumdog Millionaire. [USA Today]

Slumdog Millionaire, which won for Best Score at the Golden Globes, was also nominated for Best Score and Best Song (twice). Three songs total were nominated this year: Peter Gabriel's Down To Earth (Wall-E), and Slumdog Millionare's "Jai Ho" and "O Saya". Along with composer A.R. Rahman, Maya Arulpragasam (aka M.I.A.) is credited for "O Saya". Listen to it in the video below...

Mickey Rourke and Bruce Springsteen

Mickey Rourke, considered THE coolest guy in Hollywood by all of the other "genuine" cool guys, won the Gold Globe this evening for Best Actor in "The Wrestler."

As if art is imitating life, Rourke played a down and out professional wrestler who makes a valiant comeback just as Mickey is doing as you read this.

The crowd went wild as Mickey has always been well loved and a favorite amongst his acting peers.

Additionally, Bruce Springsteen received the best song prize for the title track to "The Wrestler," stating, "This is the only time I'm going to be in competition with Clint Eastwood," said Springsteen, referring to the filmmaker who had a song nomination for writing the title tune to his "Gran Torino." "It felt pretty good, too!" [The Lang Report]

In other Springsteen news, he is going to play at an Obama pre-inauguration event, you can catch him in the Superbowl halftime show, he made a lot of money in 2008, he's up for two Grammys, and he has a new album called "Working on a Dream" coming out January 27th...
