As mentioned, the closing night concert of the Big Sur Brooklyn Bridge Festival is happening May 19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Phillip Glass, Van Dyke Parks and Friends. To make the evening even more tempting, Real Estate (playing a stripped-down set) have now been added to bill. Tickets for that show are still available.

Speaking of, Real Estate will also be playing in the actual Big Sur for the 2013 Woodsist Festival which happens at the Henry Miller Library on September 22 & 23. The sold-out two-day event also features Foxygen (who have three shows in NYC next week), The Fresh and Onlys, Peaking Lights, The Babies and more.

There is also a Woodsist Fest date on September 28 at Pappy & Harriets in Pioneer Town, CA with Woods, Real Estate, Fresh & Onlys, Parquet Courts and more on the bill. Tickets to that show are still available.

And in other news, Alex Bleeker & the Freaks (who also play both Woodsist fests) will release their second album, How Far Away, via Woodsist on May 28. You can stream a track from the LP, "Leave on the Light," below. They'll play a NYC record release show at Knitting Factory on the same day (5/28) with Spectre Folk and King Cyst. Tickets are on sale now.

Oneida at Ecstatic Music Fest (more by David Andrako)

As previously mentioned, live concert recording site NYC Taper just turned five years old and is throwing a party at 285 Kent on Saturday (5/12) to celebrate, with performances by Oneida, Sightings and Prince Ruperts Drops. Joining Oneida onstage will be James McNew of Yo La Tengo/Dump fame and Greg Fox (Guardian Alien/GDFX). If you can't make it, we're going to guess someone will make an downloadable audio document of it. Meanwhile peruse NYC Taper's awesome catalog of nearly live recordings. There's nearly 1000 of them at present -- like the recent Lower Dens show at Glasslands, and the Crystal Stilts/Woods show that took place at 285 Kent last weekend. The flyer for the NYC Taper show is at the bottom of this post.

Greg Fox plays the Stone earlier the same night as part of the ongoing Buke & Gase-curated series of shows.

While we're talking about 285 Kent, tonight (5/11) the Brooklyn venue hosts an evening of electronic avant garde and noise, with former Yellow Swan man Pete Swanson, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Forma, and SSPS.

Then on Sunday (5/13), Woodsist Records is throwing a record release party for MV&EE's Space Homestead, with a live performance by the band as well as Steve Gunn and Herbcraft. MV&EE have some tour dates coming up and those are below, along with a stream of a song from the new album....

Silver Apples @ Abrons Arts Center

It's not every day you have the opportunity to step into the 5th dimension (and hitting up one of those smokey Chinatown mall raves that are all the rage lately doesn't count.) However, if you happened to find yourself at Brooklyn's Coco66 last night to see electronic-psych pioneers the SILVER APPLES, chances are you felt like you were visiting the other side...

Before a fawning and awe-inspired crowd, esteemed godfather of experimental electronics and surviving member of legendary psych duo Silver Apples, Simeon Coxe III greeted us with waves and smiles. And then came the oscillations we had all been waiting for! Promptly making the magic happen on his historic, eponymously named, personally devised synthesizer, The Simeon, Coxe performed a handful of Silver Apples/Contact-era favorites ("A Pox on You," "Seagreen Serenades," "Oscillations"), as well as a healthy dose of newer, nerve-perking vibrations. Transcendental, dance-inducing, and euphoric, last night's mystical Silver Apples set truly had us seeing stars. [Opening Ceremony]

That's a review of Silver Apples' show on Sunday, May 16th at Coco66. It was one of two shows for the legendary project, the other being a Friday, May 14th gig as part of the Joshua Light Show Fest at Abrons Arts Center. At that show he shared a bill (and stage for a few songs) with BK psych-rockers Oneida. Behind them, Joshua Light Show projected trippy visuals, which you can see for yourself in the pictures and videos below.

Other bands that played the four-night Joshua Light Show fest at Abrons included Dean & Britta (video below), Steve Moore (video below), Woods (NYC Taper taped it) and MV & EE (NYC Taper taped it).

The 1st Annual Memory Burn Psych Fest is a one night affair on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 @ Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY. Inspired by such psych-minded festivals over the past few years such as the Frisco Freakout in SF, Memory Burn gathers a stylistic smattering of local heady, heavy hitters in New York's psych scene for an evening of tripped-out fun...

The inaugural Memory Burn Psych Fest is a doozy, featuring performances from Revival Times, Weird Owl, Future Hunter, The Black Hollies, White Hills, Hopewell, Golden Triangle, Psychic Ills, and Sunburned Hand of the Man. The show kicks off at 7PM and $12 gets you in the door.

Another notable psych-related event in the near future includes The Entrance Band, who will team up with The Growlers at Mercury Lounge for a show on June 12th. Tickets are on sale. The Entrance Band play Bonnaroo just two days prior.

Sunburned Hand of The Man recently contributed to a tribute LP for the fallen Jack Rose, who passed away late last year. The album, entitled Honest Strings: A Tribute To The Life And Work Of Jack Rose, is out now via Fina Music and also features contributions from Bardo Pond, MV & EE, No Neck Blues Band, Six Organs of Admittance, Spectre Folk, and many many other notables. All proceeds from the sale of the record go to the estate of Jack Rose. Pick up that record, and read more about it at the label's site.

MV+EE...

Esctatic Peace psych-country duo MV & EE (Matt Valentine and Erika Elder) are on a weeklong trip with the wild-riffing Flower-Corsano Duo. The pairs play Silent Barn this Saturday (4/10) along with Meg Baird playing solo and Nonhorse.

MV+EE will be back for a May 13th show that's part of the Joshua Light Festival at Abrons Art Center. There they'll share a bill with Woods.

Also Saturday you can catch propulsive big band Darcy James Argue's Secret Society at Galapagos (listen here). Tickets are on sale.

And again on the same night, Asobi Seksu perform at Japan Society (333 E 47th St) as part of a 12-hour Open House titled j-CATION. Their show, with opener Me & Mars, starts at 9:30. Tickets will be released first-come, first-served starting at 8pm, and admission to the show is included in the $5 suggested donation for the fest.

Joshua Light Show behind Yo La Tengo @ Roseland Ballroom last September

The iconic Joshua Light Show, led by multimedia artist Josh White, remains one of the most visible proponents of the psychedelic lightshow discipline popularized in the 1960s as a means to enliven the experience of live music -- an experimental cinematic medium that is also essential to the visual culture of rock. Artist and curator Nick Hallett has selected four evenings of incredible musical artists, including Silver Apples aka Simeon Coxe (who performed with the original Joshua Light Show at Bill Graham's Fillmore East on a bill with no less than The Fugs and Norman Mailer) and pioneering English electronic musician Sonic Boom and his band Spectrum, sharing an evening with Dean & Britta. Younger talent, culled mainly from Brooklyn's ultravivid music scene, rounds out this mini-festival, focusing on visionary, visual music.

Besides those bands, the four-night mini-fest at Abrons Art Center, which runs May 12th-May 15th includes MV+EE on a bill with Woods, Oneida with the aforementioned Silver Apples, and itsnotyouitsme with Steve Moore.

Tickets to all four shows are on sale.

"The Lutheran Church of the Messiah across from McGolrick Park in Greenpoint is a ghostly, candle lit basement performance state filled with cobwebs and perfect for the gothic folk of Marissa Nadler. Nadler, who is touring in support of her soon-to-be-released Little Hells, a record which finds the Boston based songwriter exploring the sonic textures of her sullen, pastoral folk, played solo on Friday night, ditching her live band for a more intimate performance with just her, her guitar, and the occasional banjo. Friday night's set was a welcome run through of Songs III stands outs like "Sylvia", "Dying Breed" and "Salutations in the Dark", as well as Little Hells highlights "Heart Paper Lover", "Ghosts & Lovers" and "Cobwebs." The especially intimate affair (most of the audience was seated Indian style on the floor) also featured an intensely poignant rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire". Nadler, who switched between a six string Taylor and a twelve string Martin, was in a jovial mood, laughing about how critics had been labeling "Mistress on a Sunny Day", the Little Hells closer, an "uplifting" tune, something that doesn't really exist in Nadler's canon. The warm, rainy night in Greenpoint ended with Marissa doing a version of "Dead Wives Club" on banjo, an appropriate end to a somber evening with the gothic folk princess." [Chocolate Bobka]

DOWNLOAD: MV & EE and the Golden Road - Anyway (MP3)

The New England psych-raga rockers MV+EE and the Golden Road are playing tonight (1/20) at Cake Shop (set at 11pm, $7, 21+), and tomorrow (1/21) at Monster Island Basement with Spectre Folk, Kurt Vile, Pink Reason, and Christian DeRoek of Little Gold (8pm, $7, all ages). After a Jan/Feb tour down the East Coast, MV+EE will then get back to NYC for a February 27 gig at Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Greenpoint with Marissa Nadler and Mountainhood (a.k.a. Michael Curtis Hilde who's hosting the gig as part of his The Story series - this one is Chapter XII: Blisses).

Today, MV+EE and the Golden Road dropped a new duo-and-friends LP/CD, Drone Trailer, this time on San Francisco's Dicristina Stair Builders label. The band, fond of recording and releasing albums, worked with Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label on 2007's Gettin' Gone and last year's Astral Bleachers/Big Moment limited-edition live bootleg. The band's blog also reports that "[MV+EE] got some deep live archives being waxed for heroine celestial agriculture[EE's label] for the jan/feb tour as well as a sweet deluxe C.O.M. - all heads be united." I'm not really sure what that last part means...

Thurston Moore recently gave his Top 10 of 2008 - listing MV Carbon's The Dislodged Parahelion CD at No. 7. MV Carbon, a Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist, is a similarly dubbed, but totally different person than MV+EE's Matt Valentine. All tour dates and a video below...
