Mac Demarco 2015

Mac DeMarco's new mini album, Another One, will be out August 7 on Captured Tracks and the singer has just shared the video for the title track. Mac directed it himself and the video also serves as a tribute to one of his favorite artists of all time, Michael Jackson. That tribute mainly entails wearing a MJ t-shirt and, for part of the video, a mask. You can watch it below. You can also watch a video where Mac teaches you how to play "Another One" and invites you to record your own version and send it to him. He'll pick his favorite and award the winner $.69 via PayPal. Watch that below too.

Having just played Bonnaroo, Mac DeMarco's tour continues on the festival circuit this summer and he'll be playing four NYC shows in August, and then The Capitol Theatre and Woodstock's Bearsville Theatre in October.

The polarities of Sunday's rock-friendly bill are represented by Mac DeMarco and Savages. DeMarco is a nonchalant goofball whose slacker self-deprecation ("We got nothing else to do") and wayward frazzle-rock suits the genial tempo of a blazingly hot afternoon. By contrast, Savages are all discipline and attack. Their spiky punk noir is like a glass shard to the ribs and Jehnny Beth, who dedicates Fuckers to anyone dismayed by the general election result, is an increasingly formidable frontwoman.

And so to the veterans. Patti Smith's 40-year-old album Horses was a jukebox of influences - garage-rock, soul, reggae - reconfigured with a poetic downtown sensibility. She performs it in full with urgency, pathos (dedicating Elegie to "anyone you wish to remember") and wry humour. After slightly botching Break It Up she says, "I never do nothing perfect. I only fuck up perfect." Reunited 90s indie heroes Ride have a slim catalogue for headliners, but they make a glorious noise, intense yet comforting: frontman Mark Gardener dedicates the effects-pedal firestorm on Drive Blind to obvious influences My Bloody Valentine. They are clearly delighted to be back. Early in the set, the propulsive Seagull goes down so well that Gardener says, "Good night! Only joking." - [The Guardian]

London's Field Day Festival took place last weekend (June 6 & 7) in Victoria Park, with a very impressive lineup. Day 2 featured Patti Smith, Ride, Savages, former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes, Viet Cong, Mac DeMarco, DIIV, Matthew E. White, Ducktails, Allah-Las and more. Pictures from that day are in this post. Day 1 featured Run the Jewels, Caribou, FKA twigs, Toumani & Sidiki Diabate, Stealing Sheep, QT and more.

Viet Cong will be in NYC this week for Northside Fest, playing two shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Girl Band, plus American Wrestlers on Saturday (6/13), and Sannhet on Sunday (6/14). Advance tickets for both are sold out, but they will be taking limited Northside badges, so if you have one of those, arrive early. More pictures from Day 2 of London's Field Day festival, below....

Mac DeMarco @ Surf Lodge 5/22/2015

Mac Demarco

Mac DeMarco kicked off the 2015 summer concert series at Montauk's Surf Lodge on the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend (5/22). He played solo, just him and his electric guitar, but the less rowdy setting didn't stop him from crowd surfing. (It is a surf lodge.) Pictures from his performance are in this post.

If you're in Montauk this weekend, the Surf Lodge hosts Corbu on Friday (6/6) and The Flaming Lips on Saturday (5/7). It will be interesting to see how the Lips plan on doing what they do on such a tiny stage. The shows are free. More pictures from Mac's show, below...

Flaming Lips

Earlier this month, part of the lineup leaked for this year's series free concerts at Montauk's restaurant/hotel/vacation spot The Surf Lodge, and we've now got the full schedule. Some highlights include Mac DeMarco (5/22), Flaming Lips (6/7), Alvvays (6/14), Benjamin Booker (6/20), The Allah-las (6/27), Jon & Josiah of The Head and the Heart (6/28), Sylvan Esso (7/26), Delta Spirit (8/8), tUnE-yArDs (8/9), The Joy Formidable (9/4), and more.

As usual, the annual series hosts these free shows each weekend from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. It's not too far from NYC, and the bands make for a pretty good reason to get away to Montauk for a weekend.

A handful of the artists, including Mac DeMarco, The Flaming Lips, Alvvays, Sylvan Esso and tUnE-yArDs, also have other NYC-area appearances coming up.

Check out the full 2015 Surf Lodge concert series schedule below...

Tickets for The Cap and Bearsville go on sale Friday (5/15) at noon.

Coachella 2015 - Day 3
Coachella 2015 - Day 3
Coachella 2015 - Day 3

Remember punk? The supposed sound of youth and clarity? I don't know about that. Every kind of music has the age it is and the age it wants to be. At Coachella, electronic dance music wants to be young, electro-soul wants to be late-20s and early 30s, and punk, regardless of the age of the people playing it, wants to be middle-aged or older, with mixed feelings. It's the sound of probity, disappointment, disapproval.

The visual clichés of Coachella are sunglasses and dyed blond hair and gym-rats with neon tank tops. The punk shows I've seen so far -- there are a few of them here and there, with small crowds, like secret meetings -- are where the sundresses and tank tops are not. The obstructing monolith disappears; suddenly a different festival reveals itself. Whatever the music might give you, the sight is a relieving contrast. [NY Times]

Coachella 2015 day 3 had the most amount of punk bands of the three days, a genre that was surprisingly well-represented this year, despite the bands' much smaller crowds compared to the increased interest in EDM acts. Day 3 had Brand New, Conor Oberst's recently-reformed Desaparecidos, OFF!, Touche Amore and Joyce Manor, as well as somewhat-related bands like Conor's old Saddle Creek pal Jenny Lewis and Brand New/Desaparecidos' sideshow mate Built to Spill. According to Ian Cohen at Pitchfork, those punk bands "tore through tight and triumphant sets--the difference between bands that had to win over kids instead of critics over the years instead of vice versa was abundantly clear."

It was also the day that Drake headlined (and, uh, made out with Madonna on stage), Florence + the Machine played (and sadly, Florence broke her foot after her set), and we got sets from Ryan Adams, St. Vincent, Jamie xx, Mac DeMarco, Panda Bear, Charles Bradley, Philip Selway, Angel Olsen, John Talabot, Sturgill Simpson, The Cribs and more.

Pictures of day 1 HERE and day 2 HERE. More day 3 pictures below...

Perfect Pussy

Perfect Pussy wrapped up their tour over the weekend in Brooklyn with a two-night stand at Baby's All Right. The shows were presented by the band and singer Meredith Graves' new label Honor Press, and featured Sick Feeling, Meat Wave and Mannequin Pussy on night 1 (4/3); and Honor Press signees So Stressed, plus Wreck & Reference and Laced on night 2 (4/4). Perfect Pussy's Captured Tracks labelmate Mac DeMarco was in attendance on night 2, as you can see in the instagrams from the shows, below.

Perfect Pussy's next Brooklyn show is a free one, happening May 23 at Brooklyn Night Bazaar. They'll be joined by a handful of other local punk bands, Big Ups, Vulture Shit, Nine of Swords and Nonsense.

That show is part of a Time Out Live-curated weekend, which includes another punk show at BKNB the day earlier (5/22) with Priests, Greys, Skating Polly and Done.

Primavera

The 2015 Primavera Sound Festival goes down in Barcelona, Spain from May 28 - 30. We knew The Strokes and recently reunited shoegazers Ride were playing and now the line-up is being announced via the festival's mobile app, which is a not-so fun 8-bit game you have to play to reveal names. Calder

Alex Calder hails from Edmonton, Alberta, and was a member of Makeout Videotape, aka Mac DeMarco's old band. Like Mac, he's now part of the Captured Tracks roster and will release his debut album, Strange Dreams, on January 20. While not a million miles away from what his old bandmate does (hazy guitar pop), Calder's music seems a bit more serious. You can stream the "Strange Dreams" title cut below.

Alex is playing two Brooklyn shows this weekend: Cameo tonight (1/9) with Laced (Dustin from Beach Fossils' new band), and Donovan Blanc; and then Sunday (1/11) at Rough Trade, which is the store's one-year anniversary party that also features Steve Gunn, Dom Flemons, and DJs Jake B & Jesse Rosoff. The Rough Trade show is a free matinee, doors at 2:30 PM.

Calder also has an active YouTube page where he showcases his extremely dry sense of humor, offering up tutorials on how to play Grimes' "Oblivion," and John Mayer's "Daughters," how to get out stains from clothing, how to print a PDF document, and other emphera. Check out his "Live La Blogette Session" of "Strange Dreams" (brought to you by Pitchfork, Niosey, Vans and more) and a couple video tutorials, below.

You can also catch Steve Gunn in NYC later this year at Baby's All Right on April 1 (tickets), and stay tuned for his new collaborative album with Black Twig Pickers, Seasonal Hire, coming February 24 via Thrill Jockey.

Mac's Vans in action at 4Knots 2014 (more by Chris La Putt) / Ebay picture
Mac DeMarco's shoes
Mac DeMarco's shoes

Would you like to own Mac DeMarco's old Vans? He's selling them on Ebay for charity:

I'm selling an old pair of my shoes. I've John Hancocked the left shoe. Will anyone buy an old stinky pair of shoes? I don't know. lets wait and see. I'll probably throw some other crap in the box before shipping it, I dunno what.

If you're one of those kids who tried to take them off my feet while I was crowd surfing at some point this year, nice try jackass. But hey, here's another opportunity for you to have them.

All of the profit will go to Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.

Bids on Mac DeMarco's old Vans are already up to $7,900.00 as of this posting with six days left in the auction. As he wrote above, all proceeds are going to the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. Ebay also has an option where you can ask the seller questions, which people have been doing, and Mac's been answering. Some highlights:
Q: Ever stepped on dog shit in these? Can I even say dog shit on here? If so, thats awesome of eBay. Hope its not censored and you do know what I'm saying :)
A: I'm usually pretty good with not stepping in dog shit, but I can't be 100% positive

Q: Ever kick a hippie with these bad boys on?
A: Don't really kick hippies that much. definitely kicked it with some hippies in these

Q: yo mac daddy have you had any religious/spiritual experiences while in these shoes? peace and jah bless
A: Yes. We came into contact with a reptilian shape shifter at pukklepop. A drummer. No joke, evil is real.

If you're wondering how they smell, there's a video that Mac shot with his girfriend, Kiki, and you can watch that below.

Mac played Terminal 5 earlier this month and will spend the early part of 2015 on the other side of the world, playing Japan and then the Laneway Festival in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. His only North American dates currently are during Austin Psych Fest's Levitation in May. All dates are listed below.

Montreal duo The Muscadettes are currently holed up working on their debut album but while we wait for news on that, they've offered up holiday treat in the form of new song, "Christmas Kitty." With a twangy, B-52's lead, its a bouncy little stocking stuffer that makes its premiere in this post. You can stream it below.

The Muscadettes, who were last in NYC for CMJ, have also been making a list and checking it twice, in this case their Top 10 LPs of 2014 which they've shared with us as well. You can check that out below too.

Pitchfork

First tracks, then honorable mentions, and now Pitchfork has put out their Top 50 Albums of 2014. There's nothing entirely out of left field, but there's definitely some surprises here. Taylor Swift, whose album was not reviewed at all (I guess it was a pretty obscure one), comes in at #31 with her album, 1989. Sun Kil Moon, which was the only 2014 album in their Top 10 Albums of the Decade So Far this past August (and seemed like a sure bet for #1) dropped down to #7 and was beaten out by his enemies The War on Drugs. TWOD actually came in at #3 themselves, and the two ahead of them are two you may not have seen coming.

We already knew that Pallbearer, the only Best New Music metal album of 2014, was an honorable mention, which unsurprisingly left zero metal albums on this list. No other BNM album got snubbed (save for a Hyperdub compilation and the Beyonce album, but that was probably because it was technically a 2013 release), and there's not really any glaring omissions in terms of what Pitchfork appeared to champion this year.

See the list for yourself below...
