RoyaRoya

Roya is a brand new Brooklyn trio with a pretty strong pedigree: singer Rahil Jamilifard fronts Habibi, drummer Hamish Kilgour is a member of legendary band The Clean (as well as NYC's Mad Scene), and Jay Heiselmann is in Grooms (and formerly French Miami). Their sound isn't too far from what Rahil does in Habibi, and you can stream a song below.

The band just played their first show last week at Cake Shop and Roya will be playing this week at the Northside Festival, Friday (6/13) at Knitting Factory. That show is the previously mentioned Palladia & VH1 House show that Perfect Pussy are headlining, and Shilpa Ray is on the bill too. Tickets are still available, or you can try and get in with your Northside Badge (based on capacity).

The Clean will be here in August. Roya song stream below...

Jowe

Onetime Swell Maps and Television Personalities member Jowe Head released Confessions from the Twisted Tower last year. The album's somewhere between the postpunk bands he's known for and proggy English folk, and can be streamed via Rdio below.

Jowe, who toured this time last year, is visiting the US for a few shows this week with his band Celestial Choir, including two in NYC: Thursday (4/10) at Union Pool with Lame Drivers and Phoaming Edison, and then Saturday (4/12) at Cake Shop with Ne-Hi and Prince Rupert's Drops.

The Celestial Choir, it should be noted, includes members of Magnetic Fields (Claudia Gonson), Mad Scene (Lisa Siegel, WFMU's Brian Turner, and Katie Gentile), and Fly Ashtray (Eric Cohen). All tour dates are listed, along with the album stream and flyers for both NYC shows, below...

DOWNLOAD: BLURRY BITTERS - A CAKE SHOP BEST OF 2012 MIXTAPE (MP3)

Eddy Current Suppression Ring @ Cake Shop, June 2010 (more by Diana Wong)
Eddy Current Suppression Ring

One of the biggest, most genuine music fans I know is Andy from Ludlow Street indie rock club Cake Shop. He's an indefatigable listener and always turns me onto new stuff. Here we've got his "best of 2012 and live from cakeshop and recorded" which is topped by Parquet Courts' fantastic debut album, Light Up Gold. You can check out the full list of "21 AMAZING EXPERIENCES" below.

Andy is also a great maker of mixes, and I stil put in one he made for the Cake Shop/Slumberland 2009 SXSW showcase from time to time. Over at the Cake Shop blog, he posted a 2012 mix loaded with great stuff that you can download above and see the tracklist below. Highly recommend. Cake Shop had a successful Pledge Music campaign this year, signed a new 10-year lease, survived the Great Sandy Blackout, and I can't wait to see more bands there in 2013 (like maybe Obits on January 19) and beyond.

Andy from Cake Shop's Best of 2012 list and mixtape tracklist are below...
