"What we're trying to do is create an immersive experience where moving throughout the festival grounds is as engaging as standing and staring at the stage," said Omar Afra, the Day for Night festival producer.Houston's inaugural Day for Night Festival happened over the weekend, which billed itself as an "evolution of light and sound," and featured an eclectic lineup that on day 1 (12/19) including New Order (who hadn't played the city since 1989), Janelle Monae, Philp Glass, Psychic TV, Battles, CocoRosie, Prince Rama and more. Acts played against digital art installations (there were more on the festival grounds, too) making for a rather unique experience.
Reas, whose software, prints and installations have been featured in galleries globally, will showcase a television signal collage that highlights the most watched shows on a local Los Angeles station projected onto a 20-by-25-foot (6.1-by-7.6-metre) canvas.
"The idea is to create something which is already a visual assault and make it more of a literal visual assault," Reas said...
...Vincent Houze created a structure of gauzy black screens that act as a container of fog and serve as canvases for lava-lamp-like animations of water meant to mimic brain activity after going under general anesthesia. The exhibit will be controlled from his smartphone.
"Millennials are engaged every moment with the screen on the phone, the screen on the computer, video games and we feel like this is a long time coming for the world of music production to catch up with the way young people engage art and music," Afra said. - [Reuters]

This year's 20th anniversary of Nocturnal Wonderland went down pretty much without a hitch. With no reports of deaths coming our way, the festival seems mostly bereft of controversy and conflict. For those who had a ticket, Nocturnal Wonderland came to a close late Sunday night, after three straight nights of partying and hula hooping in San Bernardino. We sent photographers to check out the scene, capture the ravers in action, catch a few of the acts and peak inside the Toyota tent that we co-presented. Our photos from the three-day rave can be found HERE and HERE and BELOW...
One thing that stood out in the official reports, however, were the staggering number of arrests for the first two days of the event. Nearly 200 people were taken into custody, according to San Bernardino County sheriff's Capt. Stephen Dorsey. 76 people were arrested Friday and 123 were arrested Saturday, and the majority of those were for "people who are trying to sneak in. You're not welcome here unless you're paying, and those people who are sneaking in are not being searched." [youredm]

This Labor Day weekend, San Bernardino, CA will host the 20th annual Nocturnal Wonderland festival at the San Manuel Amphitheater & grounds. The mostly-EDM festival has some cool stuff like Duke Dumont, Flosstradamus, Tensnake, Kiesza, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Booka Shade, L-Vis 1990, Eats Everything and Paper Diamond, alongside bigger names like Armin Van Buuren, Bassnectar, Afrojack, David Guetta, Pretty Lights and more. Full lineup below. Tickets are still available.
Like at Outside Lands and Lollapalooza last month, BrooklynVegan will be repping inside the festival grounds, in the Toyota Tent. Stop by to check out intimate, bonus sets by artists playing the festival, including Tensnake (8pm Sunday) and L-Vis 1990 (7pm Sunday). Say hi to our host and house DJ Jamie Granato aka Rezound, design your own hula hoop, check out live art installations and more.
A few days after the festival, Kiesza will make her way to NYC where she'll play Best Buy Theater on September 8... with Nick Jonas. Maybe it seems weird to see a pop singer who's on the "indie" side play with a former boy-bander, but maybe Nick Jonas is heading in that direction too. He just hit the studio with Purity Ring's Corin Roddick. (And come on, you know you're a sucker for the Tinashe-featuring "Jealous" remix.) Will he be the next Timberlake? Or at least the next Miley? The NYC show also includes American Authors, Shawn Mendes and Timeflies.

Jamie xx w/ The xx in Austin in 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
It was recently announced that NYC EDM festival Electric Zoo would be returning this year with drug-sniffing dogs, patdowns, plainclothes security officers, and a required anti-drug PSA after last year's festival resulted in two drug-related deaths (and one reported case of sexual assault and 31 arrests) which cancelled day 3.
Now the initial lineup has been announced and amongst all the EDM heavy hitters is The xx's Jamie xx. Other than that, it's the typical E Zoo type stuff you probably want to steer clear of like David Guetta, Zedd, Armin Van Buuren, Laidback Luke, Kaskade, Benny Benassi, Datsik, and more, plus many more TBA. They've been known to add cool stuff as the fest approaches, so stay tuned.
Electric Zoo goes down Labor Day Weekend (8/29-31) on Randall's Island. Tickets are on sale now. Full initial lineup below...
The VIrgin Mobile FreeFest is returning for its fifth year on September 21 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. This year's lineup leans pretty heavily on indie/pop crossover with names like MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Washed Out, The Avett Brothers, CHVRCHES, Icona Pop, Sky Ferreira, Robin Thicke, Pretty Lights, Kaskade, and more.
Free tickets go on "sale" August 9 at noon, and a presale (via Twitter and Facebook) begins August 8 at noon. There will also be premium packages which guarantee admission, and include a t-shirt and souvenir cup for free fountain drinks at the festival. Any contributions will go to Washington, DC's transitional home for homeless youth, The Sasha Bruce Re*Generation House, which the festival had been raising money for over the last four years to help have it built.
Speaking of Washed Out, he just announced some other special free events happening in NYC and LA this week.

Speaking of Bjork, she's teaming up with the New York Public Library (NYPL) and the Children's Museum of Manhattan to create interactive educational programs for middle school-aged students based on her Biophilia app. Speaking about the program, Bjork said:
"It's not a bookish thing. You cannot learn to make music from a book." "I love books; they're like the best ever," she added. "There are things you can only learn from books, but it's also important to introduce the physical aspects. So for me, it was very important to make, somehow, music education that was physical." (via NY Daily News)Both Bon Iver and Bjork are set to play Oya Festival in Oslo, Norway this summer (Aug 7-11) with The Stone Roses, Refused, The Afghan Whigs, Bob Mould (performing Copper Blue), Chromatics, Cloud Nothings, John Maus, Purity Ring, Saint Etienne, SBTRKT, Screaming Females, St. Vincent, and more. Diplo released the "Express Yourself" 7" this month, the single for that track from his EP of the same name. You've already seen the video for that song, which features bounce artist Nicky Da B, and below we're offering a stream of the single's b-side, "Move Around" (featuring Elephant Man and GTA). That's the cover art for the 7" above. Pick up a copy on green vinyl.
Diplo, Grimes, Skrillex (one of the greatest guitarists of all time), Tokimonsta, Pretty Lights, and others are set to head out on the Full Flex Express Tour, a tour of Canada on a train modeled after The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and The Band's 1970 Festival Express tour.
Although the Full Flex Express tour doesn't come to the US, Diplo, Skrillex, and Pretty Lights will all be in NYC later this summer for Electric Zoo, which returns to Randall's Island from August 31-September 1. Lollapalooza (more by Grant MacAllister)
Chicago Sun Times reports:
Lollapalooza has revealed its official 2012 list of performers -- a typically wide-ranging smorgasbord of genres and styles topped by nearly a dozen mainstage headliners: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, freshly reunited bands Black Sabbath and At the Drive-In, the Black Keys, Jack White, Florence + The Machine, the Shins and Passion Pit, plus spotlighted electronic music including Swedish house titan Avicii, French dance duo Justice and DJ-producer Bassnectar.Check out the full list below...
The annual music festival is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park.
Rumored lineups have circulated widely, as they usually do, and Lollapalooza itself stoked the speculation in recent weeks via a series of CTA and online advertisements that seemed to hint at who would be playing.
The ads featured lyrics from such acts as Sigur Ros, Santigold, Jack White, Kimbra, Twin Shadow, the Weeknd, Bloc Party and more -- all bands that wound up on the bill.
Radiohead @ Roseland Ballroom in 2011 (more by Bao Nguyen)
Coachella which is taking place over the course of two weekends this year (April 13-15 and 20-22) revealed their 2012 lineup. The reunited Pulp then announced itself. The full lineup also includes headliners The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, not to mention, as predicted, the reunited At the Drive In and the reunited Mazzy Star (!), and Madness and Refused (!) and Jeff Mangum and many, many more that you can see below...
