Greg Ginn

Gregory Regis Ginn (born June 8, 1954) is a guitarist, songwriter and singer. He is best known for being the leader of and primary songwriter for the hardcore punk band Black Flag, which he founded and led from 1976 to 1986.
Since breaking up Black Flag, Ginn has recorded a few solo albums, and has performed with the bands HOR, Fastgato, October Faction, Gone, Confront James, EL BAD, Mojack, The Texas Corrugators, Jambang, and he also played bass with Tom Troccoli's Dog. He also owns the Texas-based, independent record label, SST, originally begun as an electronics company called Solid State Transmitters when he was a teenager in Long Beach, California. He remains very active in music; in a recent interview he states he still performs "about six nights a week."
...Ginn made it to 99th on Rolling Stone's list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" -[Wiki]
Greg Ginn played all the instruments in the recorded output for Greg Ginn and The Taylor Texas Corrugators (downloadable for free), but he and a band are currently on the road through the beginning of May. Those dates include four NYC-area shows. Three are with the CSC Funk Band (ex-USAISAMONSTER) in the five boroughs. A fourth is at Maxwell's with Cinema Cinema. Black metal darkness from Malkuth will manifest the first date which goes down at Cake Shop on 4/13. After heading down as far as Charlottesville, the band will be back to haunt Issue Project Room with their jammy country influenced jazz on Mon 4/19, followed by Zebulon the following day, and finally Maxwell's to sew it all up on 4/21.

Full tour dates and some videos are below.

As previously discussed, Rosetta's new album A Determinism of Morality is on the way, as well as a split with Restorations.

Junius are hitting the road with Battlefields for a set of dates that will take the pair to SxSW. Stream all of Junius's last album, The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist.

Krallice at Union Pool, replete with stage invaders
Krallice

Almost no music is more ripe for renovation than black metal, with its hyper mannerisms, its flamboyant obscurantism, its single-mood monotony. Some recent American bands have been doing just that, without Satanism, face paint or bad aesthetics. Krallice, a New York City band with an excellent new record, "Dimensional Bleedthrough" (Profound Lore), takes some of black metal's conventions - its blast beats and guitar drones and scoured vocal yells - and adds physical and intellectual urgency... As written by Mick Barr (also of the bands Ocrilim and Orthrelm) and Colin Marston (of Behold ... the Arctopus), these songs have tons of structure: strategic repetition, moving harmony, sections that develop with new melodic strains. It's way aggressive, but it hasn't closed in on itself. [New York Times]
Friday night's record release show was more like a record release party as Krallice set Union Pool ablaze. The show, night one of a full 'Blackened Weekend', featured killer sets from the controversial black (?) metallers Liturgy, the great Malkuth (who were sick once again), and sludge duo Orphan. Openers were good, but the crowd kicked it up to 11 when Krallice hit the stage, causing a giant mosh pit that consumed literally 1/3 - 1/2 of the floor of Union Pool. (I watched the show from above).

24 hours later Skeltonwitch (with Black Anvil) would somehow best Krallice in crowd participation. Photos from that show, as well as from the Shrinebulder/Rwake/Liturgy show are on the way.

After a day of rest (today, unless you are headed to The Jesus Lizard), the madness continues. A list of upcoming shows at the end of the pictures from Union Pool, below...

Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum @ Market Hotel...
Mount Eerie

The haunting, cryptic grind of Malkuth and the high-intensity shriek of Liturgy (in full corpsepaint) were quite the introduction for Mount Eerie's headlining set at Market Hotel on Halloween. The latest opus from Mt. Eerie (aka Phil Elverum), Wind's Poem, is a metal-inspired noise odyssey that manages to expertly pair brutal passages of distortion with ethereal lyrics and tender interludes usually found in his acoustic work. The somewhat rare occurrence of Phil's full-band tour, armed with the abrasive new album, was the obvious impetus for the creative holiday-night booking. Mount Eerie's live set, with Elverum backed by No Kids' Nick and Julia on synths and two drummers (one of which manned a massive gong), did not disappoint with its dynamic range - guitars blasted and died alongside Phil's whispered words.

No Kids, the quiet, restrained indie pop trio responsible for 2008's excellent Come Into My House, must have felt a bit out of place in the opening Halloween-night spot, but it was a different scene the following night at (Le) Poisson Rouge (I showed up too late to see them on Halloween so I stopped by the next night at LPR). At that show, the band followed classical pianist Dina Pruzhansky, whose opening set included selections from Debussy and Schumann. Welcoming the diversity, singer and songwriter Nick Krgovich played all his synth parts on the club's grand piano. Phil Elverum has been playing drums with the group all tour (drummer Justin Kellam has been living in Berlin) . His casual, sound-sensitive approach to the kit is rooted in his production style - subtle and unafraid of the occasional slip.

No Kids played a set of all new songs written for a forthcoming LP expected in fall 2010 (no word if they played the supremely excellent "For Halloween" on the night itself). The tunes dealt in Tin Pan Alley melodies (aided by the piano for synth substitution) and lyrics that painted a Hopperesque picture of isolation (and focused on Hollywood in specific terms). The crowd sat, still in a haze from Halloween, and soaked in the restrained songs.

I didn't see Tara Jane O'Neil's set either night. I don't believe she played at Market Hotel, but she was definitely set up to go at LPR. The Mount Eerie/No Kids/TJO tour continues through November 8th. Dates and more pictures from both shows are below...

Skeletonwitch at Scion Rock Fest (more by Steven Brown)
Skeletonwitch

Skeletonwitch must pretty much live in their van. Luckily that means that NYC has another SW date to look forward to, 11/14 at Union Pool with the incredamazing Black Anvil! Tickets are only $10 and currently on sale.

The Skeletonwitch show is one day of a "Blackened Weekend" from The Blackened Music Series, which also features the highly anticipated return of Krallice with Malkuth, Liturgy, and Orphan at Union Pool on 11/13, and the BV-sponsored Shrinebuilder/Rwake/Liturgy jawdropper at Le Poisson Rouge on 11/15 (tickets).

Liturgy is also playing with Malkuth at the previously discussed Mt Eerie / No Kids / Tara Jane O'Neil throwdown at Market Hotel on Halloween. Want to go? I HAVE A PAIR OF TICKETS AND A COPY OF Mt. Eerie's Wind Poems on LP for giveaway. Learn more at the bottom of this post.

Skeletonwitch recently dropped their new LP, Breathing The Fire and are currently on tour with Trap Them, Toxic Holocaust and The Black Dahlia Murder. That tour stirred up some controversy down south when they tried to play a Christian venue. Check out the news videos below along with a statement from Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust, and all Skeletonwitch and Orphan tour dates, below....

Woe

As if Burnt By The Sun, Tombs, Black Anvil, and Bloodhorse at Cake Shop (10/2) wasn't enough, now you can look forward to a SECOND helping of heaviness on the first weekend in October! Just two nights after the Cake Shop is set ablaze, storm clouds will roll into town as BrooklynVegan is proud to present Woe, Aluk Todolo, Malkuth, and Castevet at Union Pool on 10/4! $8 gets you in the door.

Woe's smashing LP, A Spell For The Death of Man, recently saw a vinyl release and is currently available for pay-what-you-want download.

Frenchmen Aluk Todolo dabble in a hybrid of black metal and krautrock (seriously!), and feature members of Diamatregon. Their new album Finsternis is out NOW, pick that up at Aquarius Records, who called it "a slow shifting otherworld defined by This Heat, Geronimo, Laddio Bolocko, Can, [and] Faust". The Union Pool show is part of a short US tour that also includes a few other NYC dates including Music Hall of Williamsburg with Faust on 10/1 (part of the WFMU Festival). All dates below.

Malkuth and Castevet both played shows this past weekend: Malkuth at Lit Lounge with Dark Castle, Orphan, and The Body, Castevet at Show No Mercy on 9/6 with Gnaw, Mick Barr, and Period. Pic sets from those shows are on the way.

King Khan & the Shrines @ Sasquatch 2009 (more by Chris Graham)
King Khan

The Almighty Defenders CD, out September 22nd on Vice, brings together the Black Lips, King Khan and Mark Sultan. The latter two make up King Khan & the BBQ Show, which is the band that'll be playing Brooklyn's Bell House this Halloween (its an early show - 7:30pm doors / over by 10:30pm) (there's a TBA late show at the same venue). Prizes for best costume. As you can see above, King Khan already has some ideas in mind. Tickets are on sale now.

Can't make it Halloween? King Khan and BBQ are also playing Bowery Ballroom one night earlier (10/30). Ticket info TBA. Full tour dates are still forthcoming, but there are a few more below (including November 1st in Philly). They'll be touring in support of the new King Khan & the BBQ Show album, Invisible Girl, out November 3rd on In the Red.

Another Halloween NYC gig happening in Brooklyn is the Mount Eerie metal show at the Market Hotel. His tourmates, No Kids and Tara Jane O'Neil, will also be his backing band for a set that promises "2 drummers, some gongs and a wall of amps." Liturgy is one of the bands on the bill. Another will be Malkuth. That tour formerly had a TBA for another NYC show. That will happen (with No Kids & TJO playing sets too) on Sunday, November 1st at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Tickets for that Manhattan show (which does not include Liturgy or Malkuth) are on sale (Market Hotel doesn't have advanced tickets).

The LPR show is put on by Wordless Music, who has a bunch of big shows coming up (not the least Rhys Chatham's A Crimson Grail on Saturday). There's also Warp20NYC, the Wordless series at Columbia's Miller Theatre, Deefhoof and Why?.

The Market Hotel show is curated by Brandon Stosuy - music writer and organizer of Show No Mercy (that Black Bubblegum co-curated this past Sunday). Tonight (August 5th) Brandon will be be presenting from his "in-progress oral history of American black metal [briefly excerpted at Believer] joined by Matt Luem for "Joe's Pub's Happy Ending Reading & Music Series. Also at the event will be "Rachel Cohen reading from her book A Chance Meeting: Intertwined Lives of American Writers and Artists. And Lawrence Weschler reading from his work on the visual artists David Hockney and Robert Irwin. And Colin Stetson delivering an opening invocation on saxophone. And Buke & Gass playing a short set of clear voiced yet fuzzed out pop experiments on homemade instruments." Tickets are still on sale.

The black metal star, with the star of classic cinema such as Ghost Rider, Next, Knowing, and Captain Corelli's Mandolin.
Nic Cage

In 1987, actor Nicolas Cage was "Raising Arizona." Three years later, he began raising future underground black-metal singer Weston "Arcane" Cage....

Weston tells BostonHerald.com. "I have a dark maniacal side and sometimes I want to decimate every person in the room. But I also want to enlighten. We have a variety of different fans and get different reactions."

He adds... "I come from a lineage of great artists," he said. "I just want to contribute to my genre and honor my family."- [Boston Herald via Blabbermouth]

That "undergound black metal band" is Eyes of Noctum, whose debut album, Inceptum was recorded by Fredrik Nordström (Dimmu Borgir) and features Hellhammer (!?!?!?!) (Mayhem, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir) and Snowy Shaw (King Diamond, Therion, Mercyful Fate). Eyes of Noctum play two nights in NYC starting tonight (7/17), and though I wouldn't necessarily recommend this band, they are playing with the mighty Malkuth at Studio @ Webster Hall and then again on July 20th (Mon) at Europa with the also awesome Villains and Bezoar. Advance tickets for tonight are here while tickets for Europa are here.

Snowy Shaw rwas recently interviewed by SickDrummer.com where he spoke on his current projects as well as his time with Eyes of Noctum:

SDM: Tell us about your relationship with Fredrik Nordstrom. Do you ever do studio sessions for him?

Snowy: Fredrik and I are great friends, and occasionally I do sessions for him or in his studio.

Most recently was last summer for a band I think is called Eyes of Noctum with Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage's son as the leader/singer. Fredrik just called me one night, asking me to attend in the studio as some sort of coach for this poor young LA drummer who simply couldn't get it down, so after having wasted several days, Fredrik as the producer just had to take charge of the procedure and get things moving. I got there the next morning thinking I'd be coaching the guy, then understand they expect me to do ghost drumming, then the next day I'd be listed as the drummer. I'm a very quick learner, and although I don't consider myself a very good black metal drummer (since I hit the drums very very hard, playing that ultra fast gets tricky), but I did my best to please them with all their wishes and requests, and I nailed it all in a few days time, and everybody was happy.
