Flogging Molly in Chicago in 2012 (more by James Richards IV)
Flogging Molly

The concert cruises just keep on... cruisin'. Like Weezer, Motorhead, Mad Decent and Holy Ship, Celtic punks Flogging Molly will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day in 2015 with the Salty Dog Cruise, which leaves from the coast of Miami on March 13 and continues through March 16, hitting the Bahamas twice in between.

Joining Flogging Molly for this cruise will be gypsy punk party animals Gogol Bordello, melodic punk faves The Bronx's mariachi-themed altar ego Mariachi El Bronx, UK folk punk Frank Turner, fellow Celtic punks The Tossers and The Real McKenzies, ska/rocksteady vets Hepcat and more. It's sure to be a cruise you won't remember, and luckily no designated drivers will be needed. You can book a cabin now.

Kendrick Lamar/Alabama Shakes
Bonnaroo 2012 - Day 1
Bonnaroo 2012 - Day 1

[Kendrick] Lamar hails from gangsta rap central: Compton, Calif. But instead of directing his anger at the police, women or outsiders, he criticizes himself and his environment, and he projects far more ambition than victimization. One song, "She Needs Me," praised a career woman-a rare creature in hip-hop. Mr. Lamar uses hip-hop's love of raunch and brand names (especially fashion labels and upscale alcohol) as teaching tools. Both, for him, are incidental to tales of striving, self-improvement and overcoming a rough past, delivered with a cutting rasp and fast, complicated meter shifts.

Yelawolf had a rasp, too, putting an edge on boasts and defensiveness; he's a white rapper, still an uncomfortable position even though he is signed to the label of another white rapper, Eminem. He battles any doubts with self-assertion and defiance, as his raps often toggle into doubletime to insist on his virtuosity. But his set was padded with a D.J. showcase and cover songs, including a tribute to Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys.

[Danny] Brown has two voices-a stentorian bark and a nasal, cartoonish whine-for raps about sex and death. He switches between them, over sparse, booming tracks, as his rhymes switch between wildly imaginative imagery and boasts about his potency. The raunch has plenty of singalong lines, and the Bonnaroo audience shouted them all with him. [NY Times]

Bonnaroo kicked off yesterday (6/7) with sets from three very different rappers to have recently hit the scene (as noted in the NY Times review above), along with sets from The Cave Singers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., White Denim, Alabama Shakes, Mariachi El Bronx, Phantogram and others. More pictures from Day 1 are in this post.

If you aren't in Manchester, TN for the festival, have you been following along online? More Bonnaroo coverage to come. More pics from Day 1 below...

Arcade Fire / The Walkmen
Arcade Fire
The Walkmen

The 10th annual Austin City Limits festival came to a close on Sunday with a headlining set by Arcade Fire (who also taped an edition of Austin City Limits the TV show one day earlier). It was a rough year for some attendees. I'm talking about smokers. Austin Statesman posted the following before the weekend:

We welcome all the people and music artists attending this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival. It's a special year for the music festival, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The talent this year is incredible, with headliners Kanye West, Stevie Wonder and Arcade Fire, as well as local favorites such as Asleep at the Wheel.

Before we get this party started, we must advise attendees that the Austin Parks Department has banned smoking at all Austin parks, greenbelts, trails and golf courses. That includes Zilker Park, site of the festival.

We realize that a smoking ban might be an inconvenience for some. But it is necessary to keep everyone safe. So please have fun at the events, which run today through Sunday, but leave the cigarettes, cigars, pipes -- or whatever else one might be smoking -- behind. (The ban also prohibits wood or charcoal grilling in Zilker and other parks.)

Smoking was allowed at previous ACL festivals, but this year is different. This year, Central Texas is dealing with wildfires that have killed two people, destroyed about 1,500 homes and burned tens of thousands of acres in Bastrop County, Steiner Ranch, Pflugerville and other Central Texas communities. In Austin, city firefighters responded to 469 brush fires from January through July. Cigarettes caused about a fourth of those fires, officials said. [Austin Statesman]

I don't know how many people obeyed that, but it's safe to say that ACL was fire free. In fact, much to the delight of many, it actually rained a bit on Friday and Saturday. Pictures from Sunday continue, with Arcade Fire's setlist, below...

The Bronx on a boat
The Bronx

"We've been a band for a long time, and we've toured all over, and I'll tell you shows like this don't come around very often. We're on a boat going around New York City, and for a couple of you, this is gonna be the best night of your life. This is as good as it's ever gonna get. It's just a long slow slide to death from here," Matt Caughtran told the sweaty crowd from the top of the speaker stack on the Queen of Hearts last Wednesday (6/22).

The Bronx played their first album from start to finish, and closed with a bunch of songs off their last two records. People were clutching the ceiling to keep back the constant push of the crowd, coupled with the slant of the boat to the back where the stage is, and the constant rocking from the water. Anyone who got on top of the crowd had to keep themselves from smashing into the top of the boat as they got tossed around. A couple times I heard the unmistakable sound of skulls hitting metal over the blaring music. And I got yet another opportunity to hold a mic so people slamming into the stand didn't smash out a friend's front teeth while he sang. Boat shows are great for that. They closed out the night with the brutal "History's Stranglers" that had everyone screaming along 'Motherfucker I want your bloooooooooooooood.' Awesome.

Cold Fur opened the show, announcing this was their fourth show as a band, also their first and possibly last boat show. Cold Fur played a fast, heavy set, which is what you'd expect from a band made up of dudes from Rye Coalition and the Want.

The Bronx returns to town Tuesday night (6/28) to play a free show at Brooklyn Bowl as Mariachi El Bronx with Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers and The Two Man Gentlemen Band.

I've known the Bronx guitar player Ken Horne for about ten years, from him touring as the lead guitar player for the Dragons. They used photos of mine on their albums on Junk and Gearhead records. I got a chance to talk to him a bit at Union Pool after the boat show. Our chat and more pictures from aboard the Queen of Hearts are below.

The Bronx at FFF Fest (more by BBG)
The Bronx

The Bronx hits the dock in a few short hours from now (6/22), playing a Rocks Off cruise aboard the Queen of Hearts TONIGHT (6/22). The boat shoves off at 8PM with doors opening at 7. There are VERY limited tickets at the door, so make sure and get there early (like now) if you don't have 'em already.

After NYC, The Bronx will have a bit of an identity crisis, as they'll alternate from The Bronx to Mariachi El Bronx from night to night along the East Coast. Mariachi El Bronx will return to play a FREE Sailor Jerry-sponsored show at Brooklyn Bowl on 6/28 with Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers and The Two Man Gentlemen Band. You just need to RSVP.

In addition, Mariachi El Bronx will also make their way back to the NYC area to support Foo Fighters with Rise Against at Izod Center on 9/26 as part of a larger tour. Tickets are still available for that show and the Foo Fighers show at Prudential Center on 11/14. You can also get Rocks Off Express Party Bus tickets for each show too (aka Rocks Off is running a bus from NYC to the shows and back).

All tour dates and some video is below.
