We already posted Pallbearer's favorite albums of 2015, Stephen Brodsky's (of Cave In and Mutoid Man), and Decibel Mag's, and we told you that James Hetfield's favorite album of the year was Baroness' Purple. Here's more of the best metal of 2015:
Our metal sister site Invisible Oranges had writers post their individual lists. You can check out lists by Joseph Schafer, Vanessa Salvia, Jon Rosenthal, Skid Rÿche, Dan Lawrence, Rob Sperry-Fromm, Bruce Hardt, Rhys Williams, Mat Schmahl, Jason Bailey, Ian Cory, Greg Majewski, Chris Rowella, Chris Brown, Ben Sas, Avinash Mittur, and yours truly. The top 3 consensus picks from the IO staff were:
3. Mgla - Excersises in FutilityDeafheaven were probably the band who appeared most on non-metal lists, including our own. They also topped a few metal-specific lists, including Pitchfork, SPIN, and my personal metal list.
2. Deafheaven - New Bermuda
1. Panopticon - Autumn Eternal
Panopticon topped Stereogum's list, Marilyn Manson (?) topped Rolling Stone, and Horrendous topped that aforementioned Decibel list. Tribulation didn't come in at #1 on any major lists we saw, but they cracked the top ten (and often top five) of almost every one. For more, check out MetalSucks' individual writer lists, Metal Injection's individual lists, and NPR's heavy songs.
Two great albums that popped up on a lot of lists that we never got a chance to talk about here on BV were Dead to a Dying World's atmospheric black metal opus Litany (ft. members of Pallbearer, Sabbath Assembly and Pinkish Black) and Khemmis' sludgy debut Absolution. Listen to those below.
What was your favorite metal of 2015?
Rolling Stone has published their list of the Top 50 Albums of 2015. As always, it has older artists who don't seem to pop up on many other lists (Madonna, Darlene Love, Mark Knopfler, Boz Scaggs, Keith Richards, James Taylor, Don Henley) (did you even know Don Henley released an album this year?). There's also two major rap albums in the top 3 (with Adele sandwiched in between), a good amount of country (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Ashley Monroe), smaller indie rock bands (Hop Along, Car Seat Headrest), mainstream pop (Selena Gomez, Carly Rae Jepsen), alt-rock giants (Muse, Marilyn Manson), and a lot more. And they're counting D'Angelo's December 2014 release for this list (it cracks the top 5).

Smashing Pumpkins (Jimmy Chamberlain included) continued the NYC-area run of their tour with Marilyn Manson on Friday (7/31) at Jones Beach. You already saw pictures of the PNC Bank Arts Center stop, and we've got shots of Jones Beach here. The setlist was the same as PNC, but luckily for Billy Corgan, no stage rushers this time.

the 'Pumpkins w/ uninvited guest / Marilyn Manson @ PNC Bank Arts Center 7/29/2015
"I don't know how those people are getting on stage but the next person that does is getting a guitar upside the head!" Twice, fans made it on stage during Smashing Pumpkins' set at PNC Bank Arts Center on Wednesday night (7/29), first during "Disarm" and then during "1979." Thankfully, roller coaster enthusiast Billy Corgan did not have to resort to guitar violence after that. Video of both stage invasions are below.
This was the first of three NYC-area shows for Smashing Pumpkins' tour with Marilyn Manson. The latter's set was even more highly theatrical than when he played Terminal 5 back in January. It takes guts to sing in stilts at age 46! Pictures and setlists for both Smashing Pumpkins and Manson are in this post.
Their co-headlining tour hits Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Friday (7/31) and Susquehanna Bank Center on Sunday (8/2). Tickets for those are still available.

Smashing Pumpkins are going on a tour this summer with Marilyn Manson, and they've got some pretty exciting news about it. Original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin is back in the fold for the whole tour, USA Today reports. The band has more or less been Billy's solo project for years now, and to some extent that hasn't even really been worth complaining about, as Billy had been known to overdub his bandmates' parts during their classic era anyway. But one thing Billy's never been able to replace is Jimmy Chamberlin's killer drumming, and he knows it too. He tells USA Today:
You can't just grab somebody and say, 'Play drums on this Smashing Pumpkins song.' Jimmy's drum parts are so incredibly technical and nuanced that it's a very rare class of people that can step in and play.As of now, Jimmy's just on board for this tour. For future lineups, Billy plans on having different members come and go. "I want to run a business more like it's an open door," he says.
The tour hits the NYC-area on July 29 at PNC Bank Arts Center, July 31 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater and August 2 at Susquehanna Bank Center. Tickets for those shows are still available.
Recently on the band's acoustic tour, they played a medley of all the Gish songs in three minutes. Watch a video of that, with the list of tour dates, below...
not at this Denny's, which is known more for stabbings...
Flemington, NJ-based punk band Knuckle Sandwich had a tradition in the early 90's. They even sang about it. "After the show, we all go to Denny's!" went the chorus of the popular song by the popular local band known for their sing-along choruses and active mosh pits (not to mention for the huge, post-show business they brought to Denny's). The Denny's in question was located on the Somerville Circle in Somerville, NJ, as frontman Rich Vavrence points out in an earlier version of the song entitled, "Let's Go To Denny's" which someone uploaded to Soundcloud.
The Somverville Denny's is long gone, but the tradition of eating at the 24 hour chain diner after a show lives on, knuckle sandwiches included. TMZ confirmed that this week. While DMX was allegedly robbing someone at a gas station after a show in NJ, Marilyn Manson was experiencing his own NJ-like, post-show action up in Canada:
Goth rocker Marilyn Manson got more than two pancakes, two eggs, two pieces of bacon and two sausage links during a trip to Denny's this past weekend ... he allegedly got clocked in the face!Hopefully the dark lord's face isn't too bruised up. He needs to look pretty for his upcoming tour with Smashing Pumpkins (not that we'd notice under the makeup).
According to our sources, Manson had a concert in Alberta, Canada on Saturday night and hit up a local Denny's around 2 AM. We're told Manson got into an argument with a group at another table, and at some point allegedly called a guy's gf a bitch.
The guy was pissed, and we're told he responded by punching Manson in the face.
Police confirm there was a disturbance at Denny's that night, but no charges were filed and the case is closed.
We've reached out to Manson, and he's going on the attack for what he calls a "sucker punch." [TMZ]
And speaking of violence at Denny's, Brooklyn had their own taste this week, though it wasn't at a Denny's with a yellow sign. South Brooklynites may be familiar with the other Denny's, a pub located near the Church Ave F stop in Kensington (pictured above, they don't actually serve steak anymore). That's where a man was stabbed on the sidewalk in the middle of the afternoon on Monday. No, it didn't happen inside. That was the stabbing that happened at the same spot just a month earlier.
And speaking of 'goth rockers', KMDFM (who have shared a band member with Manson), also just announced a tour.

Billy Corgan (I mean William) and Marilyn Manson publicly ended their 15-year beef this past December, and will be showing everyone how much they like each other now with a summer tour together. Billy's current version of the Smashing Pumpkins (whose 2014 album wasn't half bad) and Marilyn Manson (who some say is making a comeback this year) will tour North American amphitheaters together this summer.
The tour hits the NYC-area on July 29 at PNC Bank Arts Center, July 31 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater and August 2 at Susquehanna Bank Center. Tickets for the shows are on Citi Cardmember presale now. Facebook, Ticketmaster, Live Nation and LN Mobile App presales begin Thursday (4/2) at 10 AM, and the general on-sale begins Friday (4/3) at 10 AM.
All dates are listed, with a video of their recent on-stage collaboration, below...

"At Marilyn Manson's concert tonight @ Terminal 5 & was shocked 2 hear him dedicate "Sweet Dreams" 2 his friend of 20 years, Michael Alig!"" - Michael Alig
Marilyn Manson released his ninth album, The Pale Emperor, this year which some are calling a comeback. He's on tour in support of it now, and hit NYC last night (1/29) at Terminal 5, which was rescheduled from January 26 due to Winter Storm Juno. Did you catch the show? Do you agree that he's once again risen to relevance? Was he ever relevant to begin with?
Marilyn was also supposed to play Long Island's Paramount Theatre on 1/27 but due to the weather, that show was 100% cancelled and won't be rescheduled. Refunds are available.

Smashing Pumpkins released their not-half-bad new album, Monuments To An Elegy, this week, and Billy Corgan's current version of the band celebrated in NYC last night (12/8), their final of four release shows in different cities. For these shows, Billy was backed by current Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder, as well as Rage Against the Machine/Black Sabbath drummer Brad Wilk and The Killers bassist Mark Stoermer. Last night's intimate show (much smaller than 2012's Barclays Center show) included about half of the new album, and a handful of their '90s faves like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," "Tonight, Tonight," "Disarm," "Hummer," "Silverfuck," "Zero" and "Drown" from the Singles soundtrack. Pictures of the show are in this post.
In other news, Billy Corgan has now publicly made up with Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson, following about 15 years of beef. Good year for Courtney Love ending beefs, having probably made up with Dave Grohl earlier this year too.

Eternalism is a philosophy of time arguing that all points of time are real. Adherents to this ideology (i.e. stoners) will tell you 2000 didn't stop, it's always 2000 for those living in the present of 2000. It is with an eye on eternalism that we bring you the following collection of stories. You have entered. . .the Nu Twilight Zone.
First up, antichrist superstar Marilyn Manson has been cast on the upcoming season of the FX biker gang drama Sons of Anarchy. His character is named Ron Tully and is a white supremacist ruling his minions from a jail cell. If white supremacists pick their leaders based on paleness, Manson must be their king. Says Manson regarding the role, "Sons' has been such a big part of my life, as well as my father's, so I was determined to make him proud by being involved in what will probably be remembered as the most amazing piece of television cinema. After all, the very heart of 'SOA' is about that relationship. So, now all I need is a motorcycle." Making dad proud by going to jail. Keep doing it your way, Brian Warner. Sons of Anarchy's ultimate season starts airing in September.
Say what you will about Manson's music, at least he survived the era without making a total doofus of himself. Same can't be said for Limp Bizkit who are back on the troll-path. They've announced "Endless Slaughter," the new single from Stampede of the Disco Elephants -- like we could expect poet laureate ish from a band known to name albums Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water -- will be released initially as a cassette. Oh snaps, take that boutique noise, indie and black metal labels. I bet today is now just one of those days when you don't wanna wake up. The "experience" is to be sold at Limp's upcoming live shows. "Experience." In 30 years there's going to be a Limp Bizkit laser show. Bet on it.
Godsmack are naming their new album 1000 Horsepower. Said Wyatt, "THAT'S A LOT OF HORSES!" It's not known if Luck's David Milch will film Godsmack's first video. It's also not known if you can go back in time and delete your Godsmack-borrowing senior quote.
Korn's Jonathan Davis is miffed at Revolver for not including him in the stylized cover honoring participants at this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour. The art does include the bruised and bloodied visages of Mushroomhead and Body Count, among others. (Also, Cannibal Corpse. Just saying. Fair and balanced.) The scat man sorta sub-tweeted his displeasure on Thursday. He then jumped in his shower that sprays solely $100 bills. Life is hard.
Finally, Sublime With Rome -- which is not the shittiest remake of Roman Holiday ever, but a cover-heavy collaboration between Sublime's Eric Wilson and singer Rome Ramirez -- called foul on Linkin Park for calling authorities on their weedy ways. Sublime With Rome -- which is not sports talk radio Jim Rome's karaoke name -- were allegedly sparking up at KFMA Day 2014 in Tuscon, Arizona. Then the man came and took all their weed, man. Rome Ramirez sent the following flurry of tweets:
Linkin Park called the cops on us and said that they were allergic to pot. cops came and took all our weed while we on stage. Bitch shit. That just happened lol #snitches #bitchmove. Linkin nark.Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda, along with other band members, denied being involved. Turns out, Linkin Park's security detail are the finger-pointers, because an unnamed band member is actually allergic to "marijuana smoke." In the end, I guess it doesn't even matter.
In related news, Linkin Park have mentioned they're crafting their next album in the spirit of Meshuggah and Botch. Hmmmm...
Find the full statement regarding Linkin Park's pot-smoking fiasco below. Have a great weekend.

50 Cent wants you to stop masturbating, and he's taken to Twitter to tell you how to do it:
Step 1. To avoid the urge to masturbate stop going to porn sites. And there you have it. In related news, 50 may share the stage with his rival Fat Joe for for a Chris Lighty Tribute at the BET Hip-Hop Awards.
Step 2. Make a conscious decision not to turn your head after people walk by you.
Step 3. Do not go to strip clubs
Step 4. Do not look at lust filled magazines
Snoop Dogg on Teen Son's Pot Use: 'He's Learning From The Master'. Catch Snoop Lion at Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ tonight. He goes on at 10 (or when he feels like it). Tickets seem to still be available.
We premiered a new Strife song today.
More importantly, we're pretty sure your cat wants this for his or her birthday:
Conor Oberst played a 19 song solo show in Austin, with help from Daniel Johnston and Ben Kweller.
Ben and Conor will again team up at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate park this October.
Obama and marriage equality supporters The National are currently in the studio (hopefully crafting the follow-up to 2010's High Violet), and have posted a six-second clip, titled "Jazz Brunch," to their new Soundcloud account. You can have yourself a "Jazz Brunch" HERE.
Steve Earle is playing an Obama fundraiser at Brooklyn Bowl.
When in doubt, do like Andre Williams says, and "Blame it on Obama."
26 years ago today, heavy metal lost one its greatest bassists and heroes to a tragic bus accident. His recordings are among some of the greatest albums ever produced in metal. Cliff Burton, you are missed.
Metallica's Kirk Hammett will be signing his new horror memorabilia book on 10/11 in New York, NY @ Barnes & Noble, 10/13 in New York, NY @ Comic Con, 10/25 in Los Angeles, CA @ Barnes & Noble, 10/26 in Burbank, CA @ Monsterpalooza, 10/27 in New York, NY @ Chiller Theater, and on 11/20 in San Francisco, CA @ Books Inc.
Speaking of the Ramones, a young Morrissey did not like them, at least the first time around.
Tumbull, CT tried to throw a Michael Bolton concert, lost lots of money in the process.
More stuff below...
The Cranberries are back and headlining Terminal 5 on May 4th. Tickets are on sale at noon.
Ringo Starr and his All Star Band are hitting Bethel, CT and Jones Beach this summer.
Both Willie Nelson shows at Wellmont Theater go on sale at noon.
Tickets are on sale at noon for The Big Pink at Bowery Ballroom on April 23.

Dee Dee?? (Living Things @ Highline / more by Leia Jospe)
St. Louis garage rockers Living Things are about to appear as one of their hero bands, the Ramones in the now-filming The Runaways, the biopic about the groundbreaking 70's all-girl hard rock group led by Joan Jett. Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame plays Jett, with Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie and Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Shannon as the band's "Svengali" Kim Fowley...Living Things have already recorded a cover of "We're A Happy Family."That makes two Twilight actors with roles as rock stars in upcoming movies. Living Things' new record, Habeas Corpus came out earlier this year on Jive Records. A track from it is posted above.
In addition to having a useful resemblance in attitude to the punk progenitors, the band has a direct line into the production - singer Lillian Berlin is the husband of the film's writer and director Floria Sigismondi.
In other movie news, the The Sun UK reports that "drug-guzzling shock-rocker" Marilyn Manson will be filming a musical, "Goth-inspired" version of Cinderella with Harry Potter's Emma Watson. 500 Days of Summer, starring She of She & Him, has an indie rock soundtrack that includes Feist, The Black Lips, and She & Him. Funny People, in addition to featuring characters wearing indie rock t-shirts, also has an indie-friendly soundtrack. Oh, and Patton Oswalt is a Big Fan.
A pic from the set of The Runaways movie, with Living Things tour dates, and some trailers, below...

NIN in Atlantic City, NJ (more by Zach Dilgard)
Got a few weeks to kill? Time to break out that new hard drive that you got over the holidays.
"The internet is full of surprises these days. And in the forum....
I was contacted by a mysterious, shadowy group of subversives who SOMEHOW managed to film a substantial amount (over 400 GB!) of raw, unedited HD footage from three separate complete shows of our Lights in the Sky tour. Security must have been lacking at these shows because the quality of the footage is excellent". -Trent Reznor
There is about 405gb of HD footage available. It was recorded with multiple consumer HDV cameras during three shows: Victoria 12.05.08, Portland 12.07.08, and Sacramento 12.12.08.The release of these torrents has PC World asking if NIN is the first "open source band". If so, there's more proof that open source is the way to go, because despite giving away their album Ghosts I-IV for free, it was Amazon's best selling digital album of 2008.
This is raw, unedited, un-color-corrected HD footage. It will be primarily of interest to advanced users, who may wish to attempt to edit it together into something. It could be really interesting to see what creative users can put together using this and other fan-recorded footage. These guys are off to a great start already.
...The footage is available as a free download via bitTorrent. If you don't know what bitTorrent is, please go to this link and read every word of it before you ask anyone on the forums what to do with the torrent files. [NIN Forum]
