Bill Calahan's album Dream River has topped MOJO magazine's Best Albums of 2013 list which is in the new year-end issue. Seems about right for a magazine that had both Paul McCartney on the cover of one issue this year and The Beatles on another (also the Stones, Dylan, Pink Floyd, Johnny Marr). Their #2 was a bit of a surprise, at least to me. The Arcade Fire's Reflektor only came in at #18 but they can just be happy with being the issue's cover stars. Check out that cover -- and the entire Top 50 list - below...

Sun Kil Moon & The Album Leaf
Slowcore mastermind Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon) and ambient artist Jimmy LaVelle (The Album Leaf) teamed up for a collaborative album, Perils From The Sea, which came out on Mark's Caldo Verde Records last week (4/30). It's as beautiful a collaboration as it sounds like it would be, with Mark's descriptive lyrics taking their usual forefront, but this time over minimal beats and synth textures, rather than finger-picked acoustic guitars. You can stream three tracks from the album, "Caroline", "Baby in Death Can I Rest Next to your Grave," and "What Happened to My Brother," below.
Mark Kozelek will be heading to Portugal for the Vagabundo Festival this October, but before he crosses the Atlantic he'll stop off in NYC for a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 7. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (5/10) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (5/8) at noon.
He's also got a few upcoming international dates in May and June. All dates are listed, along with those song streams, below...

The album will be out April 24 and proceeds will go to help medical and funeral costs for Molina's family. Preorder it here. It comes with a screen print by William Schaff which you can see below, along with a note from Schaff as well.
You can stream Kozelek's contribution, "It's Easier Now," below.
Advance Base - 'The Shut-In's Prayer'
Advance Base (the current project of Owen Ashworth formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone) released his debut album for the project, A Shut-In's Prayer, earlier this year. Stream two of its tracks, "New Gospel" and "Summer Music," and watch the video for the latter below.
Advance Base has a number of upcoming shows this year including a few support dates for Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters) on his upcoming tour which brings both musicians to NYC on September 29 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets for that show are still on sale. Advance Base also plays another NYC show one day earlier (9/28) at Union Hall with Pendulum Swings and Jennifer O'Connor. Tickets for that show are not yet on sale.
It's also just been announced that Advance Base will support Ben Gibbard on many of the dates on his upcoming solo tour, incuding the NYC show which happens on November 5 at Town Hall. Tickets for that show are still available. When we last spoke, The Town Hall date was the only announced date on Ben Gibbard's tour but that tour has just been revealed in full and is mostly with Advance Base except for a few California dates with Damien Jurado (who plays his own NYC show on his tour). All Ben Gibbard dates are listed below.

Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek has scheduled a few North American dates to happen this fall. One of those will take place in Brooklyn at Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 29 with support from Caldo Verde labelmate Advance Base (aka Owen Ashworth, formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone), who interviewed Mark last year about the film Mark Kozelek: On Tour. Tickets for the Brooklyn show go on sale Friday (4/6) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (4/4) at noon. All dates are listed below.
In related news, Mark Kozelek is readying his fifth full length album for his Sun Kil Moon project, Among the Leaves, which is due out May 29 via Caldo Verde. Like 2010's Admiral Fell Promises, the album focuses almost entirely on Mark's voice and nylon string guitar, but Among the Leaves also features an "ensemble of players [joining] Mark for a portion of the record." Download the lead single, "Sunshine in Chicago," above or stream it below, along with the album's artwork and tracklist.

Mark Kozolek will be touring through Europe for a good chunk of February, and playing a few shows in North America in March. To be exact, the Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon member has only three North American dates scheduled. Luckily for East Coasters, those are in Philadelphia, Toronto and at NYC's Bowery Ballroom on March 18th. Tickets are on sale (at noon, 12/10).
Mark Kozelek also got his dirty paws on the debut LP from Desertshore (named after Nico's LP?), a band comprised of keyboardist Chris Connolly and guitarist Phil Carney (of Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters). The instrumental album, entitled Drifting Your Majesty, was co-produced with Kozelek/the band and is out now via Caldo Verde Records. The band is currently streaming a pair of tracks: check out "Mojave Mirage" and "Gwynnedd". Both are worth a gander.

Neil Halstead @ All Points West 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Now there are two NYC chances to see Neil Halstead that don't involve Jack Johnson or going to the Hamptons. The first is November 11th at Mercury Lounge - tickets on sale Thursday at noon, and the second is one day later at Music Hall of Williamsburg where Neil will be opener at the Brooklyn Mark Kozelek show. All dates below...
To some, Kozelek may come across as a recluse, but he's anything but: since the release of Sun Kil Moon's debut--2003's extraordinary Ghosts of the Great Highway--he's scored a film, acted in the movie Shopgirl, and put out a double-disc live album as well as a Sun Kil Moon record consisting of nothing but Modest Mouse songs. Ben Gibbard: When I was in my early 20s, I saw people in their 30s or 40s very differently than I do now. There's a level of confusion that is never really quelled as you get older. The rest of that conversation is at the Onion.
Mark Kozelek: I hear what you're saying about the confusion of it all. A part of you feels like you haven't grown up as much as you should at this age. I'm really in a strange position, where I'm 41, still don't know how to drive a car, I'm not married, I don't have kids. When I go back to Ohio, that's where it really kicks in. Everyone around there is dealing with their mortgages and their kids and all these things. That's where I really feel the confusion, and I really feel like the odd man out. There, nobody really cares about my record deals or my little bit parts in movies or these little blurbs I get in magazines. Everything's more like, "If you don't have kids, and you don't have religion, and you don't go to church, and you don't drive a car, and you don't own a home, and you're not married, you just don't have shit." [Laughs.]
