The 14th edition of Mutek, Montreal's annual "international festival of digital creativ and electronic music," will happen May 29 - June 2. The festival has released the initial line-up of performers, including Matthew Herbert, Andy Stott, Jamie Lidell, John Talabot, Martyn, Onra and more. Mutek Passports (good for the whole fest) and Weekend Passes (good for 5/31 - 6/2) are on sale now.

John Talabot will be here in May; Dutch artist Martyn recently played NYC and his new EP, Newspeak, came out this week; and Onra was last here in November for the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival.
More info on Mutek 2013 is here and initial line-up is below.

Dutch producer Martyn, who released his last two albums on Brainfeeder, is set to release a new EP, Newspeak, at some point this year, and this one comes out on Steffi's label, Dolly. From the clips of the EP that you can stream over at Clone Records, it sounds like a similar breed of futuristic dubstep that Martyn was working with on 2011's Ghost People, and should shape up to be a pretty solid release. The tracklist is below.
Martyn is also featured on the upcoming Nonplus+ compilation along with Four Tet, Joy Orbison and others, and he's got some shows coming up including one in NYC with Jacques Greene on February 9 at 88 Palace. Dark Disco is also on that show.
A list of all Martyn dates and the EP tracklist below...

Joy Orbison

UK producer Joy Orbison (aka Peter O'Grady) hasn't been to the US in about two years and he recently announced that he'll be going on a short North American tour this February. That tour brings him to NYC for a Blkmarket-presented Nonplus+ Records showcase at a TBA Brooklyn location on February 15. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Joy Orbison will be playing with Nonplus+ head Boddika, and the bill also features Joey Anderson and Blkmarket DJs Taimur & Fahad.
The show doubles as an album release party for Think and Change, an upcoming compilation from NonPlus+ which is due out on February 25. The compilation features a deep house track from Boddika and Joy Orbison ("&Fate") and a wobbly cut from Joy Orbison solo ("Big Room Tech House Dj Tool - TIP!"), both of which you can stream below, and the latter of which you can download above. It also features tracks by Four Tet, Pearson Sound, Martyn, Instra:mental, and more. The full tracklist is below.
Joy Orbison's tour dates also include a London show on the European tour that Mister Saturday Night (Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin's NYC dance party) is going on in February. Mister Saturday Night also has a ton of local events in NYC coming up, including one with FaltyDL.
Nina Kraviz

Speaking of Blkmarket shows at TBA NYC locations, Russian singer/producer Nina Kraviz, who we highlighted last year and who will be featured on the new Brandt Brauer Frick album, is playing one on January 26 with Cem & Rg, Talmur & Fahad, and more guests TBA. Tickets for that one are on sale now. It's the day after the previously discussed Blkmarket-presented Ellen Allien show (tickets).

Jacques Renault

Pitchfork posted a story yesterday on The New Electronic Brooklyn Underground, where they highlighted the thriving dance parties, labels, and producers that have been coming up in Brooklyn for a few years now and have been experiencing even greater success lately. Some of what they highlighted, like record label UNO and especially their artist Mykki Blanco, have been working their way up so much, they may not even be able to be considered "underground" anymore.
Mykki Blanco is also part of NYC's rising underground rap scene, and along with Angel Haze, CJ Fly, Kirk Knight, and The Underachievers, Mykki is being featured in Spit Gold Under An Empire, a new documentary on the NY rap scene directed by Montreal's Emily Kai Bock, who directed Grimes' "Oblivion" video (via FACT). You can watch the trailer video below.
But back to the electronic stuff. UNO is also responsible for putting out releases by other great artists like Jacques Greene, CFCF, Fatima Al Qadiri, Arca, Gobby, and more. Jacques Greene, who resides in Montreal, is on tour of the US now and he'll be in NYC for a show on February 9 at 88 Palace with Dark Disco and Martyn. All Jacques Greene dates are listed below.
Another party highlighted in the Pitchfork article was Let's Play House, which is a party run by Jacques Renault (not to be confused with Jacques Greene) and Nik Mercer. They've got two upcoming events this month -- first they'll do a free one on January 24 at The Woods (48 S 4 St) with Stockholm producer HNNY (who also plays Le Baron on 1/22 while he's in NYC), and then a co-presented party with The Dog & Pony show at Le Poisson Rouge on January 26 with The Revenge (UK), Mark E, Jacques Renault, and Paul Raffaele (tickets). The flyers for those shows are below. Jacques Renault also has a show tonight (1/18) at The Counting Room (44 Berry St) with Miss Sabado and Son of Sound. Admission is $10 at the door or $5 with RSVP to resonate@misssabado.com.
Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin

The article also highlights the Mister Saturday Night party, which is run by Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin. They have a bunch of parties coming up, and one of the most interesting ones is FaltyDL (who has an album coming out next week) at House of Yes on January 26. More info on that show and a list of all upcoming Mister Saturday NIght events are below.
The article also talks about Aurora Halal's Mutual Dreaming party, which doesn't have any upcoming events at the moment, but you may remember it from the Hieroglyphic Being show at 285 Kent over the summer.

Flying Lotus @ Terminal 5, 10/7/2012

Flying Lotus wrapped up his NYC takeover on Wednesday with the Brainfeeder showcase at Villain. That showcase was headlined by The Gaslamp Killer, who was supporting his new album, Breatkthrough, and it also featured Martyn, Dorian Concept, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, and The Underachievers. FlyLo didn't play a set but he was in attendance and you can see him on stage with Gaslamp Killer, along with other pictures from the showcase, below.
The NYC takeover also featured a "Meet the Musician" event at Apple Store SoHo, a Boiler Room set, an appearance at Warp's booth at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair, and a sold out headlining show at Terminal 5 on 10/7 with members of his Brainfeeder crew in tow (including opener Thundercat). Pics from the T5 show are in this post as well.
Flying Lotus will return to NYC during CMJ for a one-off at Le Poisson Rouge on October 17 with Death Grips, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Buke & Gase. That show is RSVPed out and we're not sure if they're taking any badges, but the show isn't listed on the CMJ schedule, so no promises.
With SBTRKT's show last night and FlyLo's show from Sunday, there's been no shortage of great electronic shows at Terminal 5 lately. Plus, shows coming up there include Major Lazer, Pictureplane, and Brenmar on 10/27 and Squarepusher, Bonobo, Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie on 11/1. More pics from FlyLo's T5 show and the Brainfeeder showcase at Villain are below.
FlyLo @ T5, 10/7/2012 (via @corneliuslives)

Flying Lotus played Terminal 5 last night (10/7) as part of his NYC Takeover and you can watch video of his T5 performance at the bottom of this post. The takeover also included a stop at the Warp Records booth at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair on Saturday (10/6) and continues on with a Boiler Room NYC performance tonight (10/8, guest list only but can be streamed live) with Questlove, Flatbush Zombies, Just Blaze, Joey Bada$$ & Pro Era, and The Underachievers; and a visit to the Apple SoHo store on Tuesday (10/9) and more.
Additionally, on Wednesday (10/10) there is the Brainfeeder Session NYC show at Villain in Williamsburg that features The Gaslamp Killer, Martyn, Dorian Concept, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, The Underachievers and "very special guests." Could FlyLo be that special guest? That show is free but you do need to RSVP (which is now open).
Additionally, he'll be here next week for CMJ for a show at Le Poisson Rouge on October 17 with Death Grips.
Video from Flying Lotus' Terminal 5 show is below.

DOWNLOAD: Martyn - "Viper" (MP3)

Martyn began DJ and promoting d&b nights in Holland as far back as 1996, but it was as recent as three years ago that his production began to be recognised. He had releases on Marcus Intalex's Revolv:R, both d&b and dubstep-- fitting since Marcus Intalex released one of the first deep house inspired dubstep-esque singles "Taking Over Me" as far back as 2000. But while Martyn bought into early Wookie material, it wasn't until Kode9's "Sine of the Dub" that Martyn took notice of dubstep. "I heard that record and it fitted right into some of the music I was hunting down at that time such as the reggae/techno from Berlin like Rhythm & Sound, Main Street and Basic Channel," he explains. [Pitchfork]Martyn released his second LP, Ghost People, last month via FlyLo's Brainfeeder label. The album is full of hollow dubstep beats in the vein of Kode9, who is mentioned above as one of Martyn's influences, and features guest vocals on the first track by Spaceape, who collaborated with Kode9 in 2006 for the pioneering Memories of the Future album, and again earlier this year on the duo's followup, Black Sun. But what really makes Ghost People a memorable listen is the way he works in his house influences. He can come out sounding like a better version of Deadmau5's early material (before he began taking a much frattier direction). The songs layer four-on-the-floor beats with more off-kilter ones and almost always use percussion in the forefront of the song, with a sparse melody in the background. The one exception is the album's especially house-y closing track, "We Are You In The Future," which opens with a catchy bouncing synth line that gets built off for almost 9 minutes, and is by far the longest track on the album. The album track "Viper" is available for download above.
Martyn's only got one North American date coming up and its The FIXED Holiday Bash at Public Assembly on December 16 with Jonas Reinhardt (live), Andrew "The Wiz" Potter, Ulysses, JDH & Dave P, and a back room hosted by Throne of Blood. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

Bassnectar closes out the final day

"Bassnectar, arms flailing and Cousin It hair flying in all directions, brought the loudest set of the weekend, inspiring two concertgoers to scale a 30-foot support pole inside the tent." [NYU News]Fresh off a recent appearance at Electric Zoo 2010, Bassnectar will return to NYC to play Terminal 5 on Nov 6th with Beats Antique (DJ set) and Emancipator. Tickets are on sale. The show is part of a larger US trek for the electronic artist that extends until the middle of December (and that was previously listed without the NYC show). All dates below.
In terms of new material, he says:
This week i finished the latest Bassnectar EP, 'Wildstyle' which is the most bonkers collection of music i've ever created. Each song was crafted with you in mind, and how your body and soul will be affected when the waves of this music are crashing through your cells. We will have more info soon with regards to release, but it will definitely become centerpiece of the fall soundtrack. In the meantime, and as promised, we have our fourth and final set of 2010 Electric Zoo pictures in this post. You can also check out PART 1, PART 2, and PART 3, before continuing with PART 4 below...

Pilooski @ Brooklyn Bowl - Sept. 26, 2009
Last week was great music-wise! On the less dancey side of things, Gonzales showcased his great talent behind the piano, not to mention a hilarious sense of humor at Joe's Pub friday night. Early Saturday night Phoenix rocked Central Park to perfection, followed by a late night dj set from Pilooski at Brooklyn Bowl, completing the weekend's trifecta of musical talents from Paris.
Pilooski's set lived up to the two I witnessed previously. Starting at 1:15, and deejaying nearly 2 hours, Pilooski treated the modest sized but seriously moving crowd to a great variety of highly danceable tunes. From some of his own expert edits ("Crawfish" by Elvis, "Beggin' " by Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, etc.), to disco, to even some harder sounding electro, Pilooski yet again, showed New York how a wonderfully diverse dj set could still be extremely cohesive and get everyone dancing. Yes, he's already been here three times this year, but I can't wait until Pilooski is back again. In the meantime, here's what's going on this week, starting with Thursday (10/1):
