Yo La Tengo Hanukkah @ Maxwell's 12/22/2011 (via TheRealYLT)

The Lee Ranaldo Band and comedian Ted Alexandro opened the third night of Hanukkah for Yo La Tengo at Maxwell's. Lee, Steve Shelley, and Alan Licht, who is also in Lee's band, joined Yo La Tengo for a number of songs in the latter half of their set, including a cover of Sonic Youth's "Mote," which Lee sings lead on. In the encore, Yo La Tengo covered John Cale's "Andalucia" and Barry Manilow's "Mandy," the latter of which they were joined by John Cameron Mitchell on vocals. Check out the full setlist via Frank & Earthy below.
Who will open the fourth show tonight? Spent reunited for the second night. The setlist from that show is below too. We posted the first night's setlist HERE.
Speaking of Lee Ranaldo, he's working on his solo album called Between The Times & The Tides, which will be out March 20 via Matador. As mentioned, his live band includes Alan Licht, Irwin Menken, and SY bandmate Steve Shelley. All three members contribute to the album in addition to Sonic Youth collaborator Jim O'Rourke, Nels Cline, John Medeski, Bob Bert (who drummed in SY before Steve Shelley joined, and was also in Pussy Galore who are rumored to be opening one of the YLT shows), Lee's wife and longtime collaborator Leah Singer, and Kathy Leisen. The album was produced by Lee Ranaldo and John Agnello, who produced Sonic Youth's most recent album, The Eternal. According to Sonic Youth's site, he is planning a 2012 tour. Lee spoke to Rolling Stone about the new album:
It's eight songs with a full band and two songs with pretty much acoustic guitar only. I've always been an acoustic guitar player and I've pretty much continued to play acoustic guitar throughout all of the Sonic Youth periods. My material for Sonic Youth often started on acoustic guitar. What was refreshing about this was just to see all these songs sprout and actually kind of follow each other down this road and actually get completed. I've got millions of tapes of half-completed songs and for some reason, at this point, I had the energy to take them all the way through to the end.And about the future of Sonic Youth:
I'm feeling optimistic about the future no matter what happens at this point. I mean, every band runs its course. We've been together way longer than any of us ever imagined would happen and it's been for the most part an incredibly pleasurable ride. There's still a lot of stuff we're going to continue to do. There's tons and tons of archival projects and things like that that are still going on, so there are so many ways in which we are tied to each other for the future both musically and in other ways. I'm just happy right now to let the future take its course and I guess I'm kind of thankful that I've got this other project that kind of came about on its own. It wasn't kind of like, well, "Oh the band is ending for a while and I've got to figure out what to do." It kind of naturally happened in the course of things so that was a nice way for that to come about. I played my first show the day after Kim and Thurston announced [their separation.] That was completely weird.A picture of Lee Ranaldo Band from the Yo La Tengo show and setlists below...

Matador label-mates James McNew of Yo La Tengo and Ted Leo both have December 2011 Maxwell's shows coming up and both contributed 'Best of 2011' lists to Matador Records for the label's annual big list of lists. Maybe their lists contain some clues on what special guests we can expect at their upcoming NJ shows (Yo La Tengo on all nights of Hanukkah, Ted Leo on New Year's Eve). At a minimum, Ted's list contains a great recommendation for vegan pizza in Brooklyn. Both lists are reprinted below...

To quote Matador Records...
On November 8, Kurt Vile will be releasing a brand-new 6-song EP on the 12" vinyl and digital formats, entitled So Outta Reach. The EP contains 5 original songs initially recorded during the sessions for Smoke Ring For My Halo but not used for the album, which were reworked with producer John Agnello this summer. In addition, the EP contains a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Downbound Train."Download new EP track "The Creature" above. On the same day there will be a deluxe 2-CD version of Smoke Ring For My Halo with a new color cover. The deluxe CD will include the So Outta Reach EP on a second disc, all at the same price as a regular CD.
Kurt heads out on tour later this month with Bright Eyes who just played Williamsburg last week. DOWNLOAD: Ceremony - Sick (MP3)

Matador writes:
For several of us at Matador Records & Filmworks, 'Rohnert Park', the 3rd album from Northern California's CEREMONY wasn't merely one of our favorites of 2010, it also represented one of those moments where we sit around in a dark room and wonder aloud, "can you imagine what these guys will do next?"Ceremony are in NYC now, playing two shows, each of which has featured in BV post in the past day: tonight (6/30) is at House of Vans and Friday is at 538 Johnson (and NOT Death By Audio). All tour dates below...Those moments usually don't last long. Often one of the cleaners will turn on the lights and we'll have to explain they've not walked in on some kind of corporate hazing ritual. In this instance, however, the moment seemed to extend for several months, finally culminating in the worst kept secret in our version of the rock biz this spring ; Ceremony's next full-length studio album will be a Matador release in 2012.
The announcement of Ceremony's signing to Matador also coincides with the band's swan song for Bridge 9, a 6-song 12? EP/CD/digital EP entitled 'Covers'. Songs by Urban Waste ("Public Opinion"), Pixies ("Nimrod's Son"), Crisis ("Holocaust"), Eddie and the Subtitles ("American Society"), Vile ("5 to 10?) and Wire ("Pink Flag") are reinterpreted by Ceremony on this collection of outtakes from the 'Rohnert Park' sessions. Bridge Nine are taking preorders starting today.

TNV @ a BV Day Party (more by Amanda Hatfield)

As at least one person picked up on back in October, Times New Viking are no longer on Matador. As just officially revealed via Pitchfork, they are now labelmates with the Mountain Goats...
"Ohio shit-fi indie rock heroes Times New Viking have signed with Merge Records, who will release their new album, Dancer Equired, on April 25 in the U.S. (Wichita will release it in Europe, Pop Frenzy in Australia, and Big Nothing in Japan.) It's the follow-up to 2009's Matador LP Born Again Revisited.Look for Times New Viking on the lineup of the Merge Records SXSW showcase when it gets announced. That video and another below...The first single from the record will be "No Room to Live", which previously appeared on a tour-only 7" during the band's jaunt with Guided by Voices last year. Don't plan on being at the BrooklynVegan official CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday night (now with more Suuns, less Yuck)? Looking for something to do afterwards? The above flyer illustrates another October 21st CMJ option, and though there will be no live music, there will be free beer, giveaways courtesy of Converse, free t-shirts, free beer, prize packs, free beer, and lots of people who work at record labels in the house including two who will be playing music . Oh, and it's all in the name of buying music.
Speaking of the 21 year old Matador aka Beggars, the Blonde Redhead/Pantha Du Prince tour, two shows at Webster Hall included, kicks off in Philly tonight (10/15), and 4AD aka Beggars has released a new free remix to celebrate. Grab that above. All dates below...
by BBG

Dramatic and ethereal, not to mention captivating, the recorded material from UK's Esben & The Witch recall moments of Kate Bush, Bauhaus, Portishead, or the darker side of indie pop. The trio have signed with Matador and will welcome the new Marching Song 12" on Oct 11th and a long-player next year, but in the meantime will hit the road for a string of US dates that will include THREE shows in NYC. One of those dates is TONIGHT (9/20) at Glasslands. It's their first-ever US show and tickets are still on sale. Mon Khmer, Grooms, and Megafortress are also on the bill.
The second NYC show will be supporting Foals at the sold-out Bowery Ballroom on 10/1 (right before they head to Vegas for Matador 21) and the third will see the band supporting A Sunny Day In Glasgow at Knitting Factory on 10/26 (tickets).
Esben & The Witch recently dropped a video for the title track to the Marching Song 12", dig on the video for that, as well as all tour dates below.

On the Matador 21 schedule you'll see that both The New Pornographers and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists play the final day of the festival, Sunday, October 3rd. It was also just announced that those same two bands will share a bill again two months later in NYC. Tickets for the Monday, December 6th show at Terminal 5 in NYC go on service-fee-free Presale today (9/14), AmEx presale Wednesday at 11am, and then general sale Friday at noon.
In between Las Vegas and NYC, the New Pornographers will play a series of dates with Tokyo Police Club who also have a bunch of shows scheduled without their fellow Canadians. All dates are listed below.
Ted Leo has an even busier schedule between now and December, and as usual, good taste in openers. In September and October he'll hit the road with So Cow and then Kevin Seconds and then Screaming Females again.
Screaming Females meanwhile are on a tour that passes through Brooklyn on Wednesday, September 15th. Tickets for the Knitting Factory show are still on sale.
All dates and stuff below...

1.) What is the cost and how do the tickets / hotel rooms work?"Remember, tickets go on sale this Friday at 9 AM Pacific via ticketfly.com, and at the two Zia Records locations in Las Vegas at 10 AM Pacific."The cost of the show starts at $199 for a three-night pass plus an additional $99 per night to stay at the Palms. You can have up to 4 people in one room and the option to purchase up to 4 tickets. After the initial swathe of tickets is sold out, the cost of the show goes up to $225 for a three night pass. You must buy hotel rooms with these tickets - sorry if that seems extreme, but it's how we were able to make this work economically with this lineup of bands in an intimate venue. We negotiated this rate for you and it's a good one. There will be all-night events going on at Palms, and the concept is for a familial event with label staff, artists and fans all mingling and staying at the same site.
VIP tickets are available for $399. These tickets (21+ only) will get you:
- Reserved Seating at the Pearl (AT THE FRONT)
- Access to Opening Party on Friday with open bar with staff and bands
- Priority access into afterparty shows
- Priority access into sky villa parties
- More TBAFor Las Vegas residents, there will be 100 tickets available for $199 at the two Zia Records locations in Las Vegas, for locals. These do not require purchase of hotel rooms. Tickets will be awarded via lottery at both locations, so please, don't attempt to camp out at either store early that morning or the night before.
In response to demand, we are also offering a limited number of a la carte passes for $250 for those who choose not to stay at the Palms. These will be available Friday, July 9th with a 2 ticket limit via the Ticketfly site only.
Once the a la carte passes and the local tickets at Zia are sold out, ALL TICKETS WILL REQUIRE THE PURCHASE OF A HOTEL ROOM.
2.) Will there be an installment plan to buy tickets?
Yes. Details will be available on the Ticketfly site. (The installment plan does not apply to the Zia tickets.)
3.) Can I purchase multiple hotel rooms at the time I purchase the tickets?
Yes.
4.) Can I purchase a ticket without a hotel room if I'm staying in someone else's room?
No. The only tickets without rooms are the Zia tickets and the limited $250 a la carte passes. Sorry, but that was the only way we could make this work. [FAQ for Matador at 21: The Lost Weekend]

"Tickets for "The Lost Weekend" aka Matador's 21st birthday celebrations at The Palms will go on sale this Friday morning at 9am, PST. Matador's 21st birthday fest will be happening in Las Vegas October 1st-3rd. For it, they've pulled the cream of the indie-rock crop. Previously speculated headliners Belle & Sebastian and Pavement will be there - on top of that, Guided By Voices will be reuniting to play, "in the band's "classic '93-'96 lineup!" The most recent show for GBV was New Year's Eve 2004/05.
In addition to those three, the lineup includes Sonic Youth, Spoon, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, New Pornographers, Superchunk, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Guitar Wolf (who also play NY), Chavez, Girls, Fucked Up, Harlem, Cold Cave, Shearwater, Kurt Vile and Jeffrey Joe Jenson. More will be annonuced July 5th.

Solange & Ed...
Her recent credits include playing with Dirty Projectors at Fashion Week and singing with Of Montreal at Highline and Terminal 5. Now Solange is DJing at Brooklyn Bowl on Friday, June 18th. I'm not totally sure if she's a good DJ or not, but tickets are on sale.
That's her in the picture above with her friend Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear who maybe she'll be checking out Sunday at Williamsburg Waterfront (again).
Grizzly Bear also have a NYC show coming up later in the summer at Governors Island with the Walkmen (tickets are still on sale). The Walkmen have just announced a new album! Pitchfork reports:
"Yesterday, we reported that Interpol's new album comes out September 14. As it turns out, September 14 will be a big day for bruised, world-weary New York indie rock, since that's also the date that Fat Possum will release Lisbon, the new album from the Walkmen. As Pitchfork said right there, Interpol's new album is coming soon too, and their old label Matador will be releasing it in the US! In the UK it will be Interpol's "own newly formed label, Soft Limit" that puts it out on September 13th (one day before the US). More details below. Interpol, now with a new 5-person lineup, are playing a free NYC show on June 26th.The band recorded the follow-up to 2008's You & Me over two years, working in warehouses in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. They also wrote a few songs on trips to the Portuguese city that gave the album its title. St. Vincent/Mountain Goats/Thermals knob-twiddler John Congleton produced the 11-song album, and Passion Pit/Les Savy Fav veteran Chris Zane engineered it."
Back to Solange for s second... She blogs that that she is in the process of finishing her new, indie (as in not on her former label, Interscope) album with indie rocker Dev from Lightspeed Champion (something that was originally reported a while back). That update is below...
DOWNLOAD: Teenage Fanclub - Baby Lee (MP3)

"Dogged adherents of the "if it ain't broke" philosophy of music, the Glaswegian quartet have been plying their own brand of harmony-laden guitar pop for two decades and little changes here. Pedestrian? Yes. Derivative? Certainly. But an alchemy exists within the band allowing them to find something newly life-affirming in the most well-worn elements of their Byrds-indebted sound. Current single "Baby Lee" might be twee but boasts a melody so sunny it could persuade grown men to skip down the street. And among this record's bittersweet pleasures, drowsy closer "Today Never Ends" is porch music of a timeless kind." [Guardian]Teenage Fanclub's new album, Shadows, was just released overseas in Europe (where they're touring at the moment in support of it). Merge Records puts the album out in the U.S., on June 8th (the last day of their UK tour). Download "Baby Lee" for free above.
In July and August, Teenage Fanclub will play some European festivals. In December they play the Belle & Sebastian-curated "Bowlie 2" ATP in Minehead. Before that they join their fellow Scots for a show in Brooklyn (and maybe a TBA tour?).
As promised, Belle & Sebastian are coming. They play the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn on September 30th with Teenage Fanclub. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.
Anonymous pointed out that Matador is hosting their 21st anniversary festival in Las Vegas from October 1-3. That makes it seem very likely that Belle & Sebastian will play that too while they're visiting. Las Vegas Weekly reports...
...the host venue appears to be the Pearl at the Palms, according to a source with inside knowledge. And, yes, Pavement is set to headline, a figure close to the band has confirmed; the just-reunited '90s alt-luminaries play LA's Hollywood Bowl on Thursday, September 30, and will perform in Vegas that weekend... Oh, also on that Hollywood Bowl bill? The legendary Sonic Youth, whose latest album, 2009's The Eternal, was released by, ahem, Matador Records. Hmm...Teenage Fanclub's album tracklist and dates below...

After months of speculation (much of it in our own corridors), we can happily announce that Matador Records has purchased the True Panther Sounds label. TPS, best known to many of you as the imprint behind Girls' recent rise to prominence, will continue to be managed by label founder Dean Bein. What would possess Matador to become involved with another label in this capacity? As Victor Kiam once explained his decision to purchase the Remington Shaver operation, "I liked it so much, I bought the company." Needless to say, we like Dean, Girls, Glasser, Tanlines, Lemonade and Hunx & His Punx much more than than Mr. Kiam appreciated those razor blades.Girls, who Amazon says put out the 6th best album of 2009, are on tour with Real Estate. They play a sold out show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC tonight (11/6).At the moment, Girls' 'Album' is the only True Panther Sounds title to be worked through Matador's fearsome promotional & marketing machinery (ie. Hunx' recent 'Gay Singles' LP, was not). However, in the months to come, additional offerings from TPS' impressive roster (prior releases have included titles from The Fly Girlz, Ty Segall, Rainbow Bridge, The Standing Nudes amongst others) will receive similar treatment. Stay tuned! [Matador]
Girls were not here for CMJ when Matador and True Panther teamed up for a showcase at The Suffolk.
Tanlines' last NYC show was at the Guggenheim with Yeasayer.

Also opening the show will be Titus Andronicus (who've been busy lately) and Brooklyn's The Girls at Dawn. Tickets are still on sale.
We also have a pair of tickets to give away, along with a copy of Chemistry of Common Life on LP and a Titus Andronicus limited Live in London 12" LP. Details are below.
On January 26th, Matador will be releasing a compilation of rare Fucked Up singles and b-sides called Couple Tracks. The comprehensive breakdown of the double-CD/double-LP is posted below.
Katie Stelmanis, a fellow Torontonian who's collaborated with Fucked Up before, just opened for Tegan and Sara at both of their Town Hall shows (Oct. 30th & 31st). At the gigs, she filled out the one-woman-show with a drummer and guitarist backing her up. A clip of her playing "Believe Me" at the first Town Hall show is below.
After the Brooklyn show, Fucked Up will be playing Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin on November 7th.

Cold Cave

"Cold Cave was one of the most hyped CMJ acts to hit New York last week. Their dark, almost industrial music went well with the extremely dark stage [at The Suffolk] and with their look- all black clothes and somber faces. I felt like a vampire or a bat in a cave. But I wasn't scared. Cold Cave's music is both slow and aggressive, moody and somehow poppy. While the crowd brooded I bet inside they were ecstatic. The music of Cold Cave is powerful and visceral. Maybe a little boring in a live setting, but something tells me that's the point. Enjoy the darkness." [Microphone Memory Emotion]Cold Cave played before Ted Leo at The Suffolk on Friday night. Tanlines, Glasser (backed by Tanlines), Harlem, and Lemonade also played the True Panther / Matador bill. More pictures from the show below...

San Francisco's Girls (a band that's been discussed here quite a bit over the past couple months) have nearly three months of touring lined up in support of their album, Album, which comes out September 22nd on True Panther Sounds. True Panther is the home of Lemonade and Hunx and His Punx, and well as "a new label working within the Matador family". The first song off that record is posted above, and the whole thing is currently streaming at the label's website.
The band gets back from a Europe tour at end of October, and with only a little more than a week off, sets out across North America. The first date of that leg will be a November 2nd show at Maxwell's. Tickets are on sale.
A few days later, the band plays a November 6th show at the Bowery Ballroom. Tickets go on AmEx presale Wednesday, Sept. 16th at noon. General sale starts on Friday at the same time.

Tonight (9/10) is Fashion's Night Out in the Bowery (one of many Fashion Week events happening in the city this week), which, aside from being a great chance to get a new pair of slacks, is your doorway to a free performance by Cold Cave at Rogan Store at 10pm. The flyer is posted below.
The recent Matador signees will put out their debut LP, Love Comes Close, on November 3rd. Two tracks from that are posted above.
The band's upcoming schedule includes two other NYC shows: they open for Faust at MHOW on October 1st, a show that's part of WFMU Fest at the venue.
They're also opening for Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. at Terminal 5 on November 21st.
Sonic Youth, labelmates with Cold Cave, were recently forced to reschedule their upcoming west coast tour (and cancel two shows) because Lee Renaldo fractured his wrist while playing tennis. sadness...

Matador Records co-owner Gerard Cosloy was the owner and resident of a nearly 100-year-old home on Lindell Avenue [in Austin] that burned to the ground early this morning.---Cosloy and another person escaped a fire this morning at the home near the intersection of South Congress Avenue and West Live Oak Street, said Austin fire Captain Andy Reardon.
Fire officials received the call about 3 a.m., Reardon said, and crews arrived to find the entire house on fire. Police had to alert the people inside the home that it was on fire, Reardon said. The 3,888-square-foot home, which is estimated to be a total loss, was evacuated safely.
The two-story house was built in 1911, and is located in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood.
Officials said the fire did about $500,000 worth of damage. The cause is still under investigation, officials said.
Cosloy sounded shaken but calm this morning. "There are a lot of people who have a lot less than I do who deal with a lot worse, but this is pretty bad," he said.

Jay Reatard's bassist @ the Stuy Town Oval (more by Tim Griffin)

eMusic: Judging by the altercations you've had with a few of your fans, it can be tough walking around with a moniker like Reatard.Jay Reatard's new disc, Watch Me Fall, is out August 18th on Matador. NYC will get a free listening party for the album at (Le) Poisson Rouge on Monday, August 17th, while the West Coast gets a slightly better deal. Jay Reatard will be playing a series of free record shop in-stores from LA to Vancouver through the end of August. Those dates are below.Jay Reatard: Their perception of the name, which I think of as being just mildly offensive, is what puts those negative thoughts into their heads. They anticipate something completely different from reality, and they react that way.
When I first started the Reatards, I just wanted to get to make a record. As long as I could survive until then, I could make that one and then survive until I made the next one. A lot of that early work was focused on being youthful and ignorant -- feeling immortal and thinking I could get away with whatever I wanted. After I turned 26 years old, I started thinking about things a little differently. I started to realize I'm not going to live forever, my heath is going to fail, I need a place to live. So either I grew up, or society broke me down. Either way, I started thinking more about my future, which was the opposite of everything else I'd ever done.
At this point, it would be easier to get to certain levels in the music industry if I wasn't called Jay Reatard, because it's an immediate turn off. I would definitely be playing to larger crowds, and have more money. Everything I didn't care about when I first called myself Jay Reatard, I could have more of now. But I'm fine with it -- I look at it as a litmus test for assholes. If you can't get past the name, then you can't afford the price of admission.
This September, Jay Reatard reunites with his first band, the Reatards, for a set at Goner Fest in Memphis.
On Thursday, October 1st (a few weeks before CMJ) he'll headline a Shattered Records showcase (his imprint) at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Also on that NYC bill are Box Elders (who have other NYC dates coming up too), Useless Eaters, Hunx and Nobunny (both featured HERE). Doors are at 11:00pm. Tickets are on sale.
Two tracks off the new album, including the first single "It Ain't Gonna Save Me," are above. The video for that song, with the trailer for "Waiting For Something," a short documentary about Jay Reatard, and all tour dates are below...
