Saturday March 15th @ MOHAWK - Austin TXSo, like most of the pictures I took at the Oya Festival in Norway this past summer, I never posted the ones of Matt & Kim. I started to write a "Matt & Kim are huge in Norway!" post a few times, but I never finished. Here they finally are...:: TODD P / FREE AGENCY / SILENT BARN SHOWCASE

the 11th in a series where we asked comedians to tell us what was good this year....

Kurt Braunohler is one of the greatest, though sadly lesser-known, comedians in this city. His super-human comedic abilities cover everything from improv to stand-up to teaching to hosting to acting to being in videos. His first project was called Kurtbot which featured street comedy sketches and a website that delivered them to the masses. He then got involved in a street theater project called Chenguin. Following that, his work with Neutrino Video Projects got substantial acclaim and ended up traveling to the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, as well as to the Edinburgh Theater Festival in Scotland. These days he is better known as the co-host of the Hot Tub Variety Show with Kristen Schaal and co-star of the series Penelope Princess of Pets, also with Schaal. He also teaches classes at The Pit. And the stand-up I've seen him do lately is some of the funniest stuff I've seen in ages. Simply put, he's one of my favorite comedians around. Here's what he was into in '07 - Klaus

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? - A highlight of my summer was driving into Montreal for the first time ever blasting this album (I know they're from Georgia, but still.) Every song on this album, I love.
Tegan and Sara, The Con - This year, I spent some time in a city that demands you sit in a car for long periods of time every day (it rhymes with "Smell-A.") I would have murdered many more people if not for this album.

Matt @ Siren Fest 2007, Brooklyn, NY - July 21, 2007

The spazzy, smiley, mosh-friendly Matt & Kim touring with the equally mosh pit-inducing Against Me! seems to make sense. Team Love singer-songwriter David Dondero on that bill doesn't make as much sense, but hey, why not....

TheDeathSet in Baltimore (CRED)

Now that I finally got the Best Fwends post out there, it's finally time for the one about one of their friends - another Todd-P-Baltimore-Wham-City-Dan Deacon-Spank-Rock-Punk band that I've been getting pretty excited about lately - THE DEATH SET.
TheDeathSet @ Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn, NY - May 25, 2007 (CRED)

This is also my chance to finally bring up the water balloon incident...
Last Friday was a show at Glasslands put on by Bikes In The Kitchen. It was a pretty great line-up, with Pterodactyl, Team Robespierre, Best Fwends, and theDeathset. The show was a sweaty good time (very sweaty, perspiration was condensing on the metal roof and occasionally dripping down on the crowd), until a random tragedy hit right at the start of Deathset's set. Some girls thought it would be funny to throw water balloons down on the crowd from the balcony. And it was funny. Until one of them, for whatever possible reason, decided to start throwing them past the band at the back of the stage where all of the amps/speakers/cables/sound equipment was.....[Suckapants on May 28, 2007]..........
....Meanwhile "Fuck you you fucking fuck" girl decides instead of simply giving me her details it would be a better idea to call the police after first trying to fight me all the time me thinking how ridiculous it actually is that my first fight will be with a girl. Luckily peoples pull her off. So in summary, this girl is not only an imbecile and an idiot, she is also a narc, causing the party to end. The police come and side with me after they hear the story and I tell them I don't want her to be arrested and they advise me to get an attorney which I don't have the first clue about and obviously being in a touring band can not afford. [TheDeathSet - June 4, 2007]The Death Set have a new (twelve song) EP out this week. It features remixes by Dan Deacon and Bonde Do Role. Tonight (June 22, 2007) and tomorrow they play shows in NYC followed by a whole bunch more shows all over the place. Tonight is going to be especially nuts because they're on a bill with Matt and Kim and Parts and Labor - Above the Auto Parts Store....

Despite the July 21st date being set in stone for some time, it seemed a lot of people had their doubts that the annual, free Village Voice Siren Music Festival in Coney Island would even happen this year. Perhaps with the destruction of Astroland and what not, 2007 will indeed be the last year. Enjoy it while you can. The Village Voice just announced the following intiial list of bands:
New York DollsSomething tells me this isn't going to be a friendly comment thread. Thoughts?
We Are Scientists
Matt And Kim
The Black Lips
Dr. Dog
Lavender Diamond
The Detroit Cobras
Elvis Perkins
The Twilight Sad
The Noisettes
Brooklyn's own Todd P will be in Austin too. Here's a list of the all-ages events he's throwing this year....

Yea Yeah (MP3) is one of my favorite tracks by Brooklyn duo, and Todd P regulars, Matt & Kim - I play it regularly on the "BrooklynVegan blog radio' show. Now the song has a video too - a video with a bunch of vegan and non-vegan food throwing, a moshing banana, and even some partial-nudity....
"Does it get any more adorable?" [YANP]
"Anyway, the reason I love the Matt and Kim version is the pure joy on the faces of Matt and (especially) Kim as they are splattered, and body slammed, with all sorts of foodstuffs." [without sound]
"And if you gag on their shrill, off-key, cutesy remedial nonsense, you can turn the volume off and watch people throw shit at them." [heartonastick]
MATT & KIM FANS (CRED)

Though I never post my weekly playlists anymore, I am still on Sirius Left of Center's Blog Radio every Tuesday night @ 10 pm EST. For what it's worth, it was announced yesterday that Blog Radio is up for a Plug Award in the "Specialty show of the year (commercial radio)" category. Feel free to vote. (full disclosure: I am one of the many people on the "Plug Advisory Board")
Here are the songs I played on the radio last night (November 14, 2006).....
