First Anniversary of the Popular Ensemble that "Turns the Revolution up to 11"
This Wednesday, May 1st, the Occupy Guitarmy will gather in Bryant Park to celebrate their one-year anniversary and kickoff May Day with the Immigrant Worker Justice Tour that will wind its way through midtown stopping at corporations that are exploiting their workers.
The Guitarmy will continue their march to Union Square for a May Pole dance at 3PM, join the 99% rally at Union Square at 4PM, and then march down Broadway with the Fair Pay Ensemble: a group set to inspire and educate musicians and audiences about the deplorable working conditions in New York City live music venues. They will end their celebrations by singing the opening song with Occupy at the People's Assembly in Foley Square.
Schedule of Occupy Guitarmy Events:
12 PM Bryant Park, Immigrant Worker Justice Tour
3 PM Union Square, May Pole Dance for Justice
5:30 PM Union Square to Foley Square, Solidarity March down Broadway
7 PM Foley Square Opening Occupy Wall Street People's Assembly
7:30 Zuccotti Park Kimani Gray Memorial Assembly opening
The Occupy Guitarmy is an open, participatory musical group that was born out of Occupy Wall Street music working group. Last year, hundreds joined the Guitarmy in their May Day march and hundreds more participated in the 99 Mile March from Philadelphia to New York for economic justice.

"The Occupy movement that mobilized thousands of protestors last fall was mostly quiet through the winter in New York, as both the cold and the NYPD chased demonstrators out of their makeshift camp in Zuccotti Park. But the movement officially relaunched on May 1st in honor of International Workers' Day, with organized protests taking place throughout the U.S. and with Tom Morello, Das Racist and other musicians staging a May Day concert in downtown Manhattan. How was your May Day? Pictures and videos of the May 1st party in Union Square, below...
"I traveled 3,000 miles to march with you today," Morello told a diverse crowd of Occupiers during a ceremonial "mic check" in Bryant Park. "It is an honor to march these streets with you, to sing these songs with you, letting the powers that be know that we will be heard."
Morello led a "guitarmy" of hundreds along Fifth Avenue from Bryant Park down to Union Square. An Occupy Tumblr had already supplied the setlist - including Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" and tunes from Morello's own World Wide Rebel Songs LP - and many had cheat sheets taped to the sides of their guitars, as they strummed and sang protest songs along with the rocker. As the band of marches inched its way into Union Square, a much larger rally commenced featuring Das Racist, Dan Deacon, and Immortal Technique on stage...." [Rolling Stone]

Over 135 cities are celebrating International Workers Day with a general strike, and not working, and playing music and stuff...
"While American corporate media has focused on yet another stale election between Wall Street-financed candidates, Occupy has been organizing something extraordinary: the first truly nationwide General Strike in U.S. history. Building on the international celebration of May Day, past General Strikes in U.S. cities like Seattle and Oakland, the recent May 1st Day Without An Immigrant demonstrations, the national general strikes in Spain this year, and the on-going student strike in Quebec, the Occupy Movement has called for A Day Without the 99% on May 1st, 2012. This in and of itself is a tremendous victory. For the first time, workers, students, immigrants, and the unemployed from 135 U.S. cities will stand together for economic justice."In NYC that includes performances by MEN and Tom Morello, Dan Deacon, and more.
