"Just in time for Memorial Day and tourist season, Broadway has been closed to vehicle traffic in Times Square and also in Herald Square. Traffic is diverted to 7th or 6th Avenue or the cross streets, and pedestrians can wander about or lounge on folding chairs scattered around. I'll be interested to see how this works out. With the Memorial Day holiday today, the new music release list is a bit shorter than usual in both length and star power. Of all the releases this week, I have enjoyed John Hiatt's new album Same Old Man the most. Hiatt is a legend as a songwriter, and this collection of songs is a prime example of his craft. He may be getting older, but he doesn't confuse maturity with sentimentality or nostalgia.

Other discs I have already heard and can strongly recommend this week include Malcolm Middleton's Sleight of Heart, Julie Ocean's Long Gone and Nearly There, and Walter Meego's Voyager.

At the top of my shopping list are the digital release of Mt. Eerie's Black Wooden Ceiling Opening and Ellen Allien's SOOL.
