The math-y chug of Meshuggah rang through the halls of Roseland on Friday (2/15), joined by the jazzy Animals as Leaders and Los Angeles favorites Intronaut as part of a string of dates together. Pictures from the show are in this post.
Tension filled the air for the bulk of the night due to Meshuggah's vocalist Jens having to miss the last few shows due to the flu. In Atlanta, Jens was replaced by Sacha of Intronaut, while other tracks featured a vocal backing and a cardboard cutout. Not the case at Roseland, where the vocalist ran full-steam ahead while strobes and the technical thunder of the Swedish band provided his accompaniment. Check out the setlist, more pics and video of Sacha of Intronaut singing the Meshuggah favorite "New Millenium Cyanide Christ" in Atlanta, below...

Just make sure to get tickets when they go on sale at 10AM today (11/30).
All other tour dates are listed below along with Intronaut and Meshuggah video.

Decibel Magazine has compiled their annual list of top 40 albums of the year. As usual, there are some surprises but the 2012 top ten is basically a list of nine veterans with only a single newcomer to the bunch. The full list of top records of the year according to Decibel Magazine is below, along with a tweet from the winning band. Buy your copy HERE.

Where do you go after Red and Blue? Apparently tackle two colors at once. Baroness are preparing to release their new LP Yellow and Green via Relapse Records on July 17th and have released a new MP3 from said release in the form of "Take My Bones Away". Stream/download that at RCD LBL.
Baroness recently teamed with Meshuggah to play Terminal 5 on May 23rd, a stop on their tour in celebration of Meshuggah's Koloss LP which hit via Nuclear Blast this past spring. More pictures from the NYC tour stop with Decapitated (our photographer missed the latter) are below.

Baroness at Chaos in Tejas (more by Tim Griffin)
While some may place the blame squarely on them for the emergence of "djent" as a subgenre, others will celebrate the news that technical metal band Meshuggah are heading out on the road in celebration of a new LP Koloss due in March via Nuclear Blast. The Swedes will team up with Baroness and Decapitated for a string of US dates that will include a stop at Terminal 5 on May 23rd. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale 2/10.

St. Vincent @ Pitchfork Fest in Chicago (more by Kate Gardiner)
David Byrne and Annie Clark are collaborating on music for a future Housing Works benefit. There's no date set for that, but Asphalt Orchestra will be debuting a version of one of the songs they've been working on...
A few months ago we had [Here Lies Love arranger] Tony Finno arrange the horns, and we performed one of the songs -- tentatively titled "Who" -- at the end of Annie's show at the Rose Room at Lincoln Center. Now, having been approached by the Bang On a Can spinoff Asphalt Orchestra, with the help of [Asphalt saxist/producer] Ken Thomson we've adapted another song called either "Two Ships" or "The Movie" for their group. This will be an instrumental version and we'll do a vocal version later. [David Byrne]Asphalt will perform that song on Wednesday, August 4th, at the first of five free shows the avant-marching band is doing around the Lincoln Center as part of LC's Out of Doors Festival. Locations and times for the band are below.
In addition to that piece, they'll be debuting a commission by Yoko Ono; other songs in the group's repertoire include commissions by Tyondai Braxton of Battles and Stew & Heid Rodewald of Passing Strange and BAM Next Wave 2010. The 12-piece will release a seven-track CD of its material on August 3rd through Canatloupe Music. That includes a blisteringly dissonant song by Swedish metal band Meshuggah and an intricately-arranged version of Bjork's "Hyper-Ballad." There are a few more typical "ra-ra" maching band songs on the album too (Zappa in particular is already quite melodic and pompy), but the band focuses on getting unusual sounds out of the limited instrumentation. Live, they move in unique coordinated patterns, so the experience is individualized to the space and where you stand.
As an aside, this Saturday at Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival is going to be particularly amazing, with the "Detroit Breakdown" lineup of Mitch Ryder, ? and the Mysterians, The Gories, Death and more.
St. Vincent has her own free show this weekend, at the Central Park SummerStage Sunday (8/1) afternoon, with openers Tune-Yards and Basia Bulat.
A video of Asphalt Orchestra doing that Meshuggah song on WNYC, and their schedule, plus a video of Annie doing a nylon-string version of "Actor Out of Work," are below...

"Cynic was formed in 1987 by guitarist (and now singer) Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert who met in elementary school. Soon after they recruited bassist Mark Van Erp and singer Jack Kelly. In 1988, the band made their first recording, simply called the '88 Demo. After the demo, Paul Masvidal took over vocal duties, while continuing to play guitar. The band also added a second guitarist, Jason Gobel. Another demo followed in 1989, this one titled Reflections of a Dying World. 1989 also brought the addition of bassist Tony Choy. In 1990, the group went to the studio to record their third demo, plainly titled '90 Demo. In 1991, Cynic signed with Roadrunner Records and recorded their fourth and final demo, known as Demo 1991." [Wiki]The reunited Cynic and promising newcomers The Faceless rounded out a whopper of a triple bill with headliner Meshuggah at Irving Plaza on 2/19. The sold-out show marked the return of the highly influential tech-death Cynic to the NYC stage, part of their first US tour since the early 1990s.
Reports from our camp were mixed... photographer Justina Villanueva raved about all three bands, while contributor Klaus Kinski chimed that "Cynic was the low point of the evening", adding that while Cynic were technically impressive, they lacked stage prescence... a sentiment he did not echo for Meshuggah. Unfortunately, I did not make it to the show (blasphemer!), but that's OK... word is, alot more touring is in Cynic's future.
Meshuggah did not allow photography during their set, but Cynic and The Faceless did. More of them below...

Welcome to this week in Metal! This week we'll start with the pedal to the floor with Harpoon of Chicago, who will release their new LP Double Gnarly / Triple Suicide on Interloper Records. Featuring members of 7000 Dying Rats, the band recorded the LP in August 2008 with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos), sending it off to metal-mastering go-to Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed) for the finishing touches. The trio takes advantage of the drum machine gun to create a relentless grind assault reminiscent of Plague Bringer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, or Genghis Tron (sans keys). Check out "Frogs, Boils, Locusts..." available for download above, and cop it on limited LP (400 in black, 100 in white & blue marbled vinyl) when it drops on Feb 10th!
