Metallica @ Stubb's for SXSW (more by Fresh Bread)
"European Summer Vacation, part 2,347 will end on August 2, so that can only mean one thing ... more dates in the U.S. and Canada! We just rocked Austin at SXSWand are super psyched that we'll be back in North America visiting our friends in the Fall as the World Magnetic Tour keeps rolling on. We had an amazing time on the last run in '08 and early '09 and we are so ready to do it again!Love turned to hatred for Metallica long ago, but lately that's turned into something in the middle which is a mix of my love/hate, and their classics-filled setlists. I figured I shouldn't miss the opportunity to see them at the small-for-them venue that was Stubb's during SXSW, but then I didn't try very hard to get in, and I ended up just listening to most of it from the street with lots of other people (many of whom were singing along to good ones like Master of Puppets). The only other venue I would probably make an effort to see Metallica at again, is Madison Square Garden in NYC, which is where they're playing on November 14th (thx Joe). All tour dates below...
Tickets go on sale either April 4 or April 11 - please see dates below and keep watching here for more information about on sale times and support acts." -Metallica

Invading South By Southwest, Metallica attempted to pose as one of the hundreds of smaller bands there just hoping to get a record deal.More pictures from Friday night's show below...
"We're a young band from Norway and we want to get signed," Metallica frontman James Hetfield told the audience at the heavy metal band's SXSW performance Friday night.
It was a widely expected but not officially announced show at a venue (Stubb's) that for a band like Metallica is downright minuscule, holding about 2,100 people. The band played for slightly more than an hour, performing both classics and, as Hetfield called it, "new stuff" off their 2008 album "Death Magnetic" -- a disc widely considered a return to form for the 28-year-old group.
But despite Hetfield's mock camouflage (and poor Norwegian accent), Metallica stood out on the SXSW landscape Friday. With more than 50 million albums sold, Metallica has probably outsold the other 1,900-plus bands at SXSW combined.
Droves of die-hard fans, catching wind of the rumors, lined up all day outside Stubb's, where Metallica 18-wheelers parked outside. [AP]

In a move that was either pure coincidence or pure brilliance, the Playboy bash was held in an empty grocery store attached to a slightly skeevy strip mall in a decidedly unsafe area of Austin. It's difficult to think of a more perfect setting for Jane's tawdry, tarty rock (the bevy of Bunnies parading around the party were a nice touch too). Whether it was due to the joy of feeling at home, or the joy of playing music together again, Jane's came out feisty, fiery and fierce.Metallica plays a more-official SXSW party tonight (3/20) at Stubb's. Kanye West is rumored to appear as the guest at the FADER House where Kanye's label GOOD Music is having a showcase (makes sense). More pictures from the Playboy party below...
On this night, there were no selections from Jane's softer side, just plenty of pummel, from opening number "Three Days" to the incredibly raucous set-closer "Stop!" Showing a swagger that only the best bands possess, Jane's threw haymakers, with guitarist Dave Navarro pulling solo after solo out of his axe, frontman Perry Farrell patrolling and posing, and the reformed rhythm section of Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins remaining in lockstep.
Songs like "Standing in the Shower ... Thinking" (during which Farrell patted his crotch dry with a towel, then tossed it into the crowd), "Ted, Just Admit It ..." and a particularly massive "Ocean Size" sent the crowd into hysterics -- there was even some crowd surfing, which sent the Bunnies scattering -- and showcased a band still very much at the top of its game. Navarro and Farrell shared a smooch, Avery and Perkins exchanged knowing nods, and frankly, it was as if those 17 years never happened. [MTV]
"In Norse mythology, Völsung was murdered by the Geatish king Siggeir and avenged by one of his sons, Sigmund and his daughter Signy who was married to Siggeir. Völsung was the common ancestor of the ill-fortuned clan of the Volsungs, including the greatest of Norse heroes, Sigurd. Their legend is known in Norse myth through Volsungasaga and Dráp Niflunga and in Old German through the Nibelungenlied. The above picture is a screenshot of SXSW's recently updated Stubb's schedule. Friday is now the "Guitar Hero Metallica" showcase and "Volsung" from "Somewhere, Norway" is playing at 10:30 pm.
In the English epic Beowulf, when the Geatish warrior Beowulf has killed Grendel, a Danish bard at Hrothgar's court sings about Sigmund and his father Waels." [Wikipedia]
PREVIOUSLY: Metallica playing SXSW??
P.S. Katy Perry has vanished from the Stubb's schedule, thus removing the (not)awesomeness that was Katy playing back to back with the Meat Puppets.
Metallica. And Jane's Addiction! (maybe)

Metallica played three NYC area shows in a row this past weekend, the final stops on their Death Magnetic US tour including Nassau Coliseum on 1/29 and a two night stay at the Prudential Center in beautiful Newark, NJ (on 1/31 and 2/1, the latter coinciding with the Superbowl). Machine Head and The Sword supported on all three nights, with The Sword adding a show at Bowery Ballroom on 1/30. The Metallica pics are from 1/31, I attended the 2/1 show.
I headed into the doors of the Prudential Center right around 6:45, settling into my GA "seats" (the floor) a few moments before The Sword hit the stage. My early arrival gave me a few moments to thoroughly inspect the unique "in the round" set-up. Placed in the center of the arena floor, with six mics positioned at various parts of the stage, members of the band were within ten feet of me at times, and on the opposite side at others. Overhead, seven sheet metal "coffins" the size of a Cadillacs containing lighting rigs and lasers rotated up and down and in a circular motion. On stage, located behind a short wall of amps was a line of pyro.... I guess James didn't learn his lesson? Later on, we would learn that Lars Ulrich's kit was also on a swivel. Low-budget, this show was not.
The Sword took the stage at 7PM, playing a shortened 25+ minute set and drawing from both of their Kemado releases. The Austin crew were simple and effective and it was truly surreal to see the band on THAT stage as opposed to the last time I saw them (Bowery Ballroom in 2007).
Machine Head were next, and even if I wanted to hear them (I didn't), I wouldn't have been able to. The mix was absolutely abhorrent, and if it wasn't for the metal-requisite whammy pedal, I probably wouldnt have been able to hear ANY guitars. My life-long Metallica fan friend commented:
"Those dudes are straight up corny".
Mostly. That said, the masses in Affliction/Don Ed Hardy tees, mohawks, and mock wallet chains were contented. Thankfully, guitarist/vocalist Rob Flynn is a good showman, spraying water about and leading the crowd in chants of "Ma-sheen-head" and "Machine-fuckin-head". At least he, unlike the music, held my interest.
Metallica took the stage a shade after 9PM, emerging with their usual intro music, "The Ecstasy of Gold" from Ennio Morricone's The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly soundtrack. Kicking off with "That Was Just Your Life" from the new LP, Death Magnetic, the band was accompanied a laser-light show of epic proportions.... Daft Punk is jealous. Although the concentration was on Death Magnetic material (six songs in total), the band did dip into the classics ("Master of Puppets, "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Blackened", Seek & Destroy"), the records that propelled them to the top ("Enter Sandman", "Nothing Else Matters"), and deeper fan favorites (a cover of "Die Die My Darling" by the Misfits, "Breadfan" by Budgie) over the course of the evening.
As a fan of the Cliff Burton & Justice era of Metallica, I would say this show was alot like a Jerry Bruckheimer film: loud, lots of explosions, an obscene amount of special effects, a little something for everyone, a touch on the dumb side, but big time entertainment.
More pictures from 1/31 and setlists for all three shows below...
A Brewster police officer is on paid administrative leave after allegedly urinating on a fellow music-lover at a Metallica concert in Boston and then refusing to leave TD Banknorth Garden when security guards ejected him for disorderly conduct.
A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Transit Police report from that night identifies Brewster Police Officer Joseph Houston, 29, as being thrown out of the Jan. 18 rock concert by security guards at around 10 p.m.
Although he has been charged only with trespassing, Houston appeared to be drunk, flashed his badge in an attempt to get back into the concert, called a black MBTA officer "Obama," and had been asked to leave the concert after he allegedly urinated on another patron, according to the report. In related news, "Rumor going around Austin is that Metallica will be performing on March 21st @ Stubbs BBQ. Anyone else heard this rumor? That place only holds around 1500 people, so that would be killer is it was true."

new Metallica video at YouTube.
Smashing Pumpkins' new video for G.L.O.W. below...
"I felt like a dagger went right through my heart. It hurt so much," Satriani says. "The second I heard it, I knew it was [my own] If I Could Fly."So now Joe is suing. Watch a video comparison of the songs in question HERE. Watch a video comparing Satriani's guitar solos to Kirk Hammett's below...
As it turned out, Satriani wasn't the only one who noticed the similarity between If I Could Fly and Viva La Vida.
"Almost immediately, from the minute their song came out, my e-mail box flooded with people going, 'Have you heard this song by Coldplay? They ripped you off man.' I mean, I couldn't tell you how many e-mails I received.
"Everybody noticed the similarities between the songs. It's pretty obvious. It's as simple as that - when you listen to a song and you say, 'Wow, that's a real rip-off.'"
What makes the situation especially painful for Satriani is that If I Could Fly isn't just any song. It's a composition he'd been laboring over for well over 10 years before he recorded it.
"I started writing it on the Flying In A Blue Dream tour back in 1990. But because of the way I write, sometimes songs take a while, as this one did. In 2003 I started demoing it in earnest. I played it on the acoustic guitar on a demo so I could sing the melody, then I demoed it on electric to get the sound. And the performance turned out to be so spontaneous, so right and so emotional, that it wound up being a keeper."
..."That was the intent all along," he says. "It was a love letter to my wife, Rubina - a simple, direct expression of feeling.
"That's what really hurts about this whole thing. That I spent so long writing the song, thinking about it, loving it, nursing it, and then finally recording it and standing on stages the world over playing it - and then somebody comes along and plays the exact same song and calls it their own."
"Coldplay didn't want to talk about it. They just wanted this whole thing to go away." Joe Satriani... [the interview continues @ Music Radar]

More tribute band news...
You thought Bowery Presents couldn't announce any more New Years Eve shows. Then you remember they can stay open super late that night which means they can host shows after other shows. Such is the case with the Mr. Brownstone show happening at Mercury Lounge. Doors are 2 AM - after the A Place to Bury Strangers show. The Guns N' Roses cover band will be playing "Appetite For Destruction" in its entirety (or until they pass out). Tickets are on sale.
And speaking of cover bands performing entire albums, Pinktallica, an "All Chick Tribute to Metallica", will be performing "Kill Em All" right before Girls Girls Girls (all girls, Motley Crue), will be playing "Shout At The Devil". This all also happens at Mercury Lounge, but on January 17th. Tickets are on sale for that too. I can't find a website for Pinktallica, so I know nothing about them, but they're my favorite band, just based on their name (and their choice of album to cover), in this post.
Last but not least, the extremely popular Beatles cover band, The Fab Faux, has two shows coming up at Terminal 5. On December 26th they perform "Abbey Road" and "Let it Be" (tickets), and on December 27th, "The White Album" (tickets).
More dates at their site.

Do you think he got it done after St. Anger?
In between the dates at Nassau Coliseum (1/29) and Prudential Center (1/31, 2/1), The Sword will opt to NOT go shopping around Soho (like Metallica might) in lieu of another date in the NYC area. Tickets go on AMEX presale 11/19 and regular sale on 11/21 at noon for a January 30th show by The Sword at Bowery Ballroom. It's one of a few shows the band added to fill in the holes between Metallica dates. Some of the added dates are also with Lamb Of God who is also on tour with Metallica. Others are with Year Long Disaster.
Lamb of God recently announced details of their new album, due in 2009. The Sword recently released a video for "How Heavy This Axe". That video, and all tour dates, below...

Let's kick this thing off the RIGHT way, an absolutely BRUTAL grind record out NOW on Willowtip.... no, not the new Phobia (though that is good, and out NOW) or the new Maruta (also out NOW)... it's Cleptocracy by unstoppable force known as Kill The Client! Blazing through eighteen tracks of searing grindcore, Cleptocracy is both destructive and engaging.... Check out "Cleptocracy and "Divide And Conquer" downloadable above!

Check out the basic itinerary below, and hold tight for details to come.
Mastodon have anounced details for Crack The Skye, their upcoming album due in 2009! As discussed, Brendan O'Brien will be on the boards for the seven track (listing below), fifty minute opus which was was recorded at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta. Meanwhile, the band has announced a handful of European dates with Metallica (find 'em below).
The sickening crusty hardcore of Planks are one my my latest obsessions, and their limited 12" (500 copies) is out NOW on Narshardaa. Pick it up here and check out "Deluge" from that LP, which the band has made available for download above and scoot on over to Aversionline, who has a second track for download! Also out now on Black Box, a split LP that Planks rocked with Tombs... a taste of which is above in the form of "A Sunken City". Speaking of Tombs, the band permenantly added Andrew Hernandez (ex-ASRA badass) on drums, and I must say that he absolutely KILLED it when I saw them lay waste to the Relapse showcase during CMJ.
Cattle Decapitation have posted a new song from and announced a date for (Jan 20th, 2009- INAUGURATION DAY!) their new album, The Harvest Floor! Highly influential black metallers Mayhem have announced that they will tour the US in spring of 2009!
