Brooklyn DJ duo Metro Area (Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani) are going on a small US tour at the end of the month. Due to the tour's sponsorship by Scion, all stops on the tour are free. The tour kicks off in NYC on June 27 at Santos Party House. House of House and Goddollars open the show. You just have to RSVP to enter.
After hitting Santos, Metro Area will play Electric Pickle in Miami. Miami New Times spoke to Morgan about the upcoming show:
What can Miami expect during Metro Area's upcoming performance at the Electric Pickle? All tour dates below...A good time, I hope. Open-minded crowds, music-loving and dancing crowds rather than people who consider club music a disposable soundtrack to nightlife... they seem to appreciate our sets the most. So with hope it'll be a good match. We'll be mixing all of our influences and trying our best to make people sweat!

The Field

"As with most of the Field's music, Yesterday and Today works better through headphones than in the club. You'd get too many people transfixed, just staring out into the middle distance. But that's what makes it such a powerful experience to listen to on your own. So cue up "Sequenced": let its static alternation and its basic bass and hi-hat drift through you and out across an icy landscape. It's the pulse of 2009. " [PopMatters]Hopefully you had a good time getting down Friday night. Get ready to do some more dancing tonight (Saturday, 6/19) and read on for a chance to win a pair of tickets to see Fatboy Slim at Terminal 5 next Wednesday:

Trevor Jackson @ Studio B

Last week in dance was a lot of fun despite only going to one event - Primetime meets Fixed at Studio B. I caught most of Eamon Harkin's set in which he masterfully mixed up some disco, house, and techno. House of House, who I hadn't seen before, truly lived up to their name in terms of their selections. The Studio B crowd was feeding off of the duo's enthusiasm as House of House animatedly delivered track after track. As much as I enjoyed their set I was extremely excited and anxious for Trevor Jackson to begin. The set Trevor finally delivered at nearly 2:30 was well worth the wait. For the next hour an a half he played an excellent set that was heavy on house and disco, with some modern subtleties. Despite only being able to identify "Heaven's In the Backseat of My Cadillac" by Hot Chocolate, "Situation" by Yaz, and "Use Me" by Runaway out of the entire set, it was easily one of the better dj sets I've witnessed in '09 thus far.
I have to admit I'm more excited about seeing David Byrne than getting down this weekend, but here are some options if you'd rather not leave the dancing to the man in the big suit:

Housemeister @ Bowery Ballroom - January 24, 2009

I thought the Valerie Collective at Webster Hall last Friday would be nearly impossible to top, but Saturday proved different. The typically rocking Bowery Ballroom had gone rave for the night. Bowery's usual head-nodding, foot tapping crowd was nowhere in sight and upon entering the front of the sparsely filled ballroom it was like seeing a mirage: a range of people from teens to late 30's, wearing everything from brightly colored shorts and tights, tie dyed capes, matching striped hoodies, and nylon LA Gear Jumpsuits...all getting down (on a much too well lit, and nowhere close to being crowded dancefloor) just minutes into the evening! In addition to the crowd seeming very rave-ready to begin with, Housemeister played an absolutely great opening set...very techy/techno-ey in the vein of Boys Noize and totally fresh. He included many of his own remixes, a lot of tracks I didn't know, and some great current stuff (aka Oizo's "Positif") that had everyone accordingly losing it: Vous êtes des animaux indeed.
You could tell the crowd was eagerly anticipating Modeselektor's set by their hysterical reaction to Gernot Bronsert & Sebastian Szary's brief visits to the stage to show support for Housemeister prior to their set. By the time Modeselektor finally did take the stage (just before midnight), the crowd went absolutely berserk as they opened with "The Dark Side Of The Sun". As the show progressed the pair's energy and antics only fueled the crowd further in much the same way as the past two times I saw them. Modeselektor's lip syncing to their remix of Bjork's "Dull Flame of Desire" garnered a great reaction from the crowd as did track after track which included one of my favorites, "2000007" (featuring French rap group TTC) among others.
Modeselektor @ Bowery Ballroom - January 24, 2009 (more by Zach Dilgard)

By the last 20 minutes of the set everyone was in an absolute frenzy that seemed to be at its peak, at which point Modeselektor voiced a robotic sounding request for champagne - the show was far from over. Moments later a very pleasant hell broke loose as the crowd shifted forward in the hopes of being sprayed. The music and dancing continued on as this happened not once, but twice! The inflation of a huge ape balloon followed, as did the sudden and very unexpected presence of a man in a chicken suit along with a butcher (complete with a real pig's head - ew!) who repeatedly showered the crowd and the stage with feathers. Modeselektor's excellent show ended infinitely more fun and bizzarely than it had started.
As much fun as I had, I didn't really get to bask in the Modeselektor afterglow as I was racing down to Santos in the hopes of catching Tortured Soul perform at Mister Saturday Night. Thankfully I managed to get there, check my coat, find my friends, and only miss the first two songs of their performance. After witnessing a great show from them last March, but being too exhausted to actually dance, it was awesome to finally see the three-piece, live Brooklyn house band again. They were in top form and had everyone in Santos' packed, main room was getting down from the second they dropped "Fall In Love" early in their set, right until the very end. The dancing didn't stop there as Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter seamlessly eased into their set with Metro Area's "Caught Up" just as Tortured Soul finished and proceeded to keep everyone moving with a great mix of melodic and danceable tunes. Both the upstairs & downstairs of Santos were as packed as ever with people who were there to dance...and Mister Saturday Night proved to be an excellent new way to do it.
Unfortunately this is the first weekend since it started that no Mr. Saturday Night party is happening, but there are many other excellent ways to get down this weekend & get started next week. Here's what's happening starting with Saturday (1/31)...

Sebastien Tellier @ LPR - Dec 11, 2008 (natkg)

From Tuesday my week in dance hit a slight hiccup. Thursday night (12/11) it was pouring when I arrived at Le Poisson Rouge for Sebastien Tellier and despite not waiting outside long at all, I still entered the venue sogggy. Unfortunately I also arrived just in time to see Hearts Revolution. I've seen them once before. I'm fine with their beats and I like some remixes of their tracks, but I find their shows to be atrocious (ouch - ed). It's mainly due to Lo's singing which is shrill and unpleasant to begin with, but the lead vocalist's unnecessary commentary which included complaining about the bright stage lights this time around (and wanting to go home and go to bed the previous time I saw her) was not helping matters. Thankfully their show was pretty short and Sebastien Tellier was on not too long after.
While Sebastien Tellier had my Tellier fanatic-friends and I bugging out when we last saw him at Hiro, this time around the experience was much more subdued. The stage show was a little toned down - less pelvic thrusting and fun with the microphone. I brought a Tellier-virgin along and was concerned about what he was thinking of Frenchman... Though everyone seemed really into it, and it was still a decent show, my distance from the stage, and concern that my friend was/wasn't enjoying himself, and a slightly less outrageous performance, made his show at Le Poisson Rouge fall short of the madness I experienced at Hiro in July.
Luckily things picked right back up where they left off Friday night...
Boy 8-Bit @ 88 Palace, November 14, 2008 (The Culture of Me)

Last Saturday despite only considering two options, I had a tough decision to make. I hadn't seen Justin Martin deejay since January, but I had come so close to seeing Boy 8-Bit (without it actually happening) last month that I needed to go to Korrupt 88 Palace (a venue that wasn't very easy to find).
If you haven't been (this was my first time), 88 Palace is a dim sum restaurant on the second floor of a mini-mall that is under the Manhattan Bridge. As you walk in there is police tape up so you are pretty much corralled up the stairs, straight to the restaurant. I was a bit skeptical/curious about how this was going to work as a dance venue...but it worked pretty f-ing well. The place is shaped a bit like a stretched out horseshoe with a bar running down one side, tables scattered everywhere and a dancefloor at the end. I don't remember what time it was (probably sometime between 1 and 2) when we arrived, but the party was already packed and grooving. You could pay for shots that they would pour straight from the bottle into your mouth at the bar, apparently there had been jello shots earlier...I don't think anyone who was drinking was feeling bashful about hitting the floor.
We worked our way up to the floor shortly after we arrived, just as Boy 8-Bit began his set. Much like when I saw him in March, he dropped a more UK-influenced set, (that featured other stuff too)...but was just a pleasant far cry from so much of the French music (old and new) I've been (happily) listening to over the past year. It was one of those sets that was so good I was too busy dancing/had absolutely no desire to attempt a setlist, but a few good tracks I remember are below. I did'nt know lot of the really good stuff Boy 8-Bit played though - perhaps some new music of his?
that setlist and lots of upcoming events, below...

M83 @ Webster Hall - Nov. 14, 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

Last Friday I had a frustrating, puzzling experience at the M83 show at Webster Hall. M83 is easily one of my favorite bands and I'd enjoyed many of their shows prior to last week's including the one they played just a few months ago at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Despite playing a similar set Friday night, I just wasn't having my typically awesome M83 experience. For some reason, I had no patience for their more mellow and slow songs and when they finally would play something more upbeat or poppy (like Don't Save Us From the Flames or Graveyard Girl) it didn't pack as much of a punch as I wanted. The encore of Couleurs was amazing, but overall something just seemed to be missing. That said, one of my friends loved it, the another (who had never seen M83 before and was only slightly familiar with their music) shared thoughts similar to mine. I also watched some videos of the show THE following morning and got goosebumps, so who knows...Check out one of M83 performing Teen Angst below (more here):

Here are some highly recommended options for tonight, Saturday (11/1), along with a few things coming up over the next few days.
Midnight Juggernauts @ Le Poisson Rouge - September 13, 2008 (CRED)

Last week/weekend in dance was one of the best I've had in a long time.
Thursday night at Santos, Cassius' Boombass played a more mellow set compared to the Cassius set from '02 that I remember so fondly. It picked up at times, but around 3:30 when the music took a retro turn with Pump Up the Jam and This is Acid, I headed home.
Friday I found myself last minute at Été d'Amour's party on the Mini Rooftop which wound up being awesome. From there I headed to Robot Rock where I couldn't tell if Linus Loves set was just ok, or if I was just having trouble shifting gears from Trevor's funkier style to Linus' more straight-up electro.
Saturday night I witnessed the best performance yet from Midnight Juggernauts. I think it all boils down to the soundsystem. Though the Bowery Ballroom show was better than seeing them at the cavernous Terminal Five, I thought the Midnight Juggernauts' spacey, guitar-driven, electro-peppered tracks found their perfect balance thanks to Le Poisson Rouge's impeccable soundsystem. I didn't have the best spot either. I watched the the show from a spot off-center, to the immediate right of the stage. All of the more subtle, electronic loveliness, previously obliterated at Terminal Five, and overshadowed slightly less at Bowery Ballroom, fully came through, delighting the audience with the electro-space sound that brilliantly shines through on Dystopia.
Sometimes it's better to quit while you're ahead, but instead of heading home after the great Midnight Juggernauts show, I headed to APT to see Kaos. His set was a nice mix of modern and classic disco I've come to expect from him, but the place was DEAD, especially for a Saturday night.
Sunday marked the great end to a nearly flawless weekend in dance. Holy Ghost started things off on the mellow/discoey side at the Yard, followed by a great set by Stretch Armstrong. He played a great mix of literally everything, a lot of which I wasn't familiar with along with some current tracks I love (the Boys Noize Happy Birthday remix of Cut Copy's Lights and Music). Unfortunately it was early, and daylight and nobody (myself included, despite almost doing it multiple times) had the nerve to hit the floor. Once Feadz began his set people gradually started getting up to dance. Going in I had absolutely no idea what to expect from Feadz. I don't like Uffie so I never really took the time to check out Feadz extensively. It became apparent almost immediately that I had been missing out. A set that began with a hip hop track quickly moved from genre to genre, touching on techno, house, b-more, and everything in between without a single misstep. The young Frenchman treated the now packed floor to a nearly 2-hour set that was as bouncey as he was, bopping up & down as he scurried between the decks.
I never made it to Minitek over the weekend, but I heard it didn't all go as planned.
A week like that is going to be hard to top, but before we get into that, we have a contest! We have 5 copies of the deluxe, double-CD edition of the Chemical Brothers' Brotherhood to give away. Details on how to win are at the bottom of this post, under all the Friday night events....

Kelley Polar @ PS1 - August 16, 2008 (CRED)

Despite things starting off a bit slow at PS1 on Saturday, I had a great weekend. I caught about an hour of Metro Area's first set. It was pretty fun and disco-ey, nothing mind-blowing though. Afterward Kelley Polar went on with a full band. The first song started off beautifully with some violins, then a dope bassline was dropped. Something went off in my head. I became instantly happy and thought I had just discovered another great live disco band along the lines of Escort. Unfortunately things wound down from there. The energy from the bassline was lost and the rest of the performance didn't really go anywhere memorable. After that I called it quits in the interest of resting up for the Beach Party at Water Taxi Beach later that night.
The atmosphere and vibe at the beach is really great. The crowd is a mixed bag, but the view of the Manhattan skyline at night is beautiful. There's sand under your feet. It reminds me that New York City is a bunch of islands. I felt like I was on vacation. On top of all that, the music was excellent. Unfortunately I have no idea who (out of Justin Carter, Probus, Todd Makinen, and My Cousin Roy) was deejaying then, but what I do know is that most of the people I was with brought up how great the music was multiple times. It was definitely one of the most laidback, yet intensely fun nights I've had in a while.
Sunday morning my Saturday night caught up with me and I arrived at Summerstage later than planned resulting in a less than ideal spot. Luckily Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings were in top form and gave one of the soulful, energetic performances for which they are known. My distance from the stage became unimportant.
All too quickly it was Monday again. Thankfully we're headed to yet another dance-filled weekend in New York. Here's what's going on starting with Thursday night:

Apparently Sebastien's Wednesday show is going to be so epic we'll need an entire day before we're ready for the after-party Sexuality pre-release party. Someone made the connection that having the after-party the day after the show (which is what I originally saw on this flyer) didn't seem quite right. The Thursday (July 31st) pre-release party features Sebastien deejaying along with Marc from Record Makers from 10-1. From 1 on Institubes Paris Terror Club which includes Bobmo (one of the handful of recently emerging, super young, talented French deejays), as well as fellow Frenchman Jean Nipon (be sure to download his "Freedom Fries" mix at the top of this post) plus New York's own Heavy Bass Champion, Drop the Lime take over. The show is the first stop on Institubes' US and Canada tour. The rest of the dates can be found below after the rest of Thursday's events. Advanced tickets available here....

Crookers at Webster Hall - June 21, 2008 (Phil Xander)

LA Riots at Hiro - June 19, 2008 (Nicky Digital)

With Crookers, Green Velvet, and many other deejays in town, I'm sure a lot of dancing went down in New York this past weekend. Regrettably I wasn't around for most of it, but managed to make it out to the Youpi party at Studio B Wednesday night. Unfortunately the party did not live up to its name. I arrived with some friends around 12 or so and Studio B was maybe one quarter full (which was probably in part due to the $18/$23 cover). I am un chien!! began just after we walked in. Their sound was more rock/guitar-based with some electronic beats in the background. Unfortunately the rock overtones were on the abrasive side and made the whole experience rather unpleasant - sort of an inferior version of the Rapture at times. The lead vocalist, David Fontao, put a lot of energy into his dance-move laden performance, but ultimately his frustration with the less than enthusiastic crowd became apparent. The highlight of the show was definitely the length - at just about 30 minutes I don't think I could've taken much more.
continued....

P.F.1 (Public Farm One) is an urban farm concept that evokes the look of a flying carpet landing in the P.S.1 courtyard. Constructed from large cardboard tubes, its top surface will be a working farm, blooming with a variety of vegetables and plants. The structure will create a textured, colorful, and constantly changing surface in contrast with P.S.1's angular concrete and gravel courtyard. P.F.1 will work as an interactive bridge between outside and inside, creating multiple zones of activity including swings, fans, sound effects, innovative seating areas, and a refreshing pool at its center. The installation will be a living structure made from inexpensive and sustainable materials recyclable after its use at P.S.1....P.S.1 will hold a summer opening celebration in Long Island City on June 22nd with a performance by Ecstatic Sunshine. Then they officially kick off the weekly Saturday ourdoor (urban farm-looking) parties on July 5th with Nublu Orchestra. From there we get some DFA, Kelley Polar, Apollo Heights, Matthew Dear and much much more....

People Don't Dance No More @ Love, May 22, 2008 (more by David Bruno)

There's a lot happening this weekend, especially at Love. Tonight (May 23) the Captain and Mathhead are back for the Take Over. You can always rely on Trouble & Bass to bring their bass-heavy sound to the floor. This special edition of the Takeover features three other crews of monthly Love residents (Sub Swara, Secret Night of Science, and Dub War) each bringing their own influences to the bass that they have in common.
Dub War was featured in an article about dubstep in the New York Times a few months ago. If you're new to dubstep, Dub War has a podcast you can check out too (@ iTunes).

Metro Area @ Studio B, Brooklyn, NYC - Jan 4, 2008 (Justin Charles)

No more "Week in Dance". Obviously, you've seen that it's not a weekly feature. "Dance Update" will be more frequent and less frequent at the same time. Longer and shorter. Keep an eye on my friends' Darrin and Greg Remixed posts for more regular updates on the MP3s that are flying about on the dance'o'net. I'll keep doing what I'm doing here.
I had the grand scheme to do successive posts on my best of for 2007, but that never materialized. I instead wrote an overview of my thoughts on the year in dance, and now I'll jump right into what I'm looking forward to for 2008.
I already told you about the Tim Goldsworthy(DFA)-produced Cut Copy album coming out on Modular. There's also some exciting new releases DFA is putting out themselves. (Sidebar: I know I got some heat for focusing too much on DFA last year, but this is a New York blog, and DFA keep putting out such damn good music: its really not my fault. But noted.). Full-lengths are soon forthcoming from Hot Chip, Hercules and Love Affair, and The Juan Maclean, but killer singles and remixes are coming even much sooner.
Hot Chip is up first with a Feb 5th release of Made in the Dark. They definitely maintain their "leftfield" designation with this album, but its quirkiness is exactly what makes it (and them) so endearing. Check out some fun behind the scenes footage at Hot Chip's shoot of "Ready for the Floor".
Less quirky, more proper early 90s house music: Hercules and Love Affair's album will probably be out in March and features more than a few guest appearances from Antony. Preview the amazing "Blind" featuring Antony on the HAFL Myspace, the 12" single will hopefully come with a remix from early 90s house legend Frankie Knuckles. Fact Magazine has a preview here.
You might have heard the unabashedly piano house track "Happy House" by The Juan Maclean making the rounds in the clubs. It's quite the jam (listen here) and features Nancy Whang on vocals and will be released in March. The album " " (yes, that's what it's called) will be out a bit later in the spring and TJM will kick off unrelentless touring throughout the rest of the year.

Curses! & Das Glow @ Element, NYC - May 11, 2007 (CRED)

People Don't Dance No More (my party at Element) had a supremely glowtastic night last Friday (May 11). Das Glow destroyed, playing the newest French bangers along with bangers from Paris circa 1998. Curses! chopped and re-edited almost every track he played and hi-jacked some Chicago house into 2007. Supremely awesome. Beware the acid.

PS1's Warm Up 2007 party series begins on June 30th, and runs until September 1st.
Each Saturday, music and performances will revolve around a theme or guest host. A sampling of themes include Punk revival, Psychedelic trends, Girl groups, and global fusion. Objektivity, Tummy Touch, Rong, DFA and other music labels have been invited to assemble six-hour programs featuring their most exhilarating artists. This party is one of the best reasons to be in New York in the summertime. Line ups are coming soon.
Dance Parade & Remix Hotel Invades NYC This Weekend
The first annual NYC Dance Parade is this Saturday (May 19) from 1 pm down Broadway & 5th Ave to Washington Square Park. The parade seems to be a mix of Carnival's massive troupes of dancers and the Love Parade's freaky types. From their site:
We are celebrating everything from Break dance to Ballet with Burning Man Spirit and Love Parade Energy. We are an all volunteer run Non-Profit Organization who seek to show that dance is an expressive form of art--Our aim is to educate the public on the wonderful health and cultural benefits of dance. In doing so, we aim to support and strengthen the role of dance in our culture.Go and support dance, dancing, and dance music. There's a festival in Washington Square park after the parade from 4-8pm with appearances by Danny Tengalia & Kool Herc, and an afterparty at Element.
Remix Hotel is a travelling public event that was started by Remix Magazine to bring hands-on access to new music production technology via presentations and demonstrations from some of electronic & urban music's brightest minds.
NYC's edition takes place at the SAE Institute of Technology Friday May 18th - Sunday May 20th, and IT's FREE. The full schedule of events can be found here. I'm most interested in the Producers Panel on Saturday at 5 pm with Just Blaze, Kode 9, Buckshot, Rob Swift, and Eric Kupper. Remix hotel-related parties listed at the end of this post.

KELLEY POLAR

Number one on Todd's list, Kelley Polar is "a New Hampshire based producer who lives in a farmhouse basement studio, and is the caretaker of a herd of Scottish Longhair cattle". Michael F. Gill of Stylus interviewed HIM. PAPER says "Kelley Polar is a classical-music prodigy with a taste for techno, a duality that got him booted out of Juilliard." Above photo snagged from All Music.
Pitchfork gave Love Songs of the Hanging Gardens a 7.8.

A SHOW: Kelley Polar is playing live at Knitting Factory in NYC on March 8, 2006. Dan Selzer (Acute Records, AllDisco) and Morgan Geist (Metro Area, Environ) are DJing. I heard something about special lighting and an 8-piece string section too. Tickets are on sale.
