Gary Carter

"In 1986, Carter's Mets won 108 games and took the National League East by 21.5 games over the Phillies. Carter suffered a postseason slump in the NLCS, batting .148. However, he hit a walk-off RBI single to win Game 5. Carter also had two hits in the next game which the Mets won in 16 innnings.

The Mets won the 1986 World Series in seven games over the Boston Red Sox. Carter batted .276 with nine RBIs in his first World Series, and hit two home runs over Fenway Park's Green Monster in Game Four. He is the only player to hit two home runs in All-Star Game (1981) and two home runs in a World Series game. Carter started a two-out rally in the tenth inning of Game Six, scoring the first of three Mets runs that inning on a single by Ray Knight. He also hit an eighth-inning sacrifice fly that tied the game. Carter finished third on the NL MVP ballot in 1986." [Wikipedia]

If a Brooklyn music venue is allowed to call itself Shea Stadium, then a Brooklyn music blog is allowed to post a tribute to a Mets superstar. R.I.P. Gary Carter.

Paul McCartney

The new Citi Field received a Beatle baptism Friday night.

Paul McCartney offered the first musical concert at the sterling new venue, an apt parallel to the Fab Four's historic, kick-off show at Citi Field's predecessor, Shea Stadium, 44 long years ago.

Of course, several key differences between 1965 and today made themselves immediately clear.

This time, everyone could hear. And the only "girls" who screamed were gently prompted by Paul.

As a further reference to history, Paul brought out a special guest at one point - Billy Joel, who last summer closed down the crumbling Shea.

Together they performed a song from the '65 performance, "I Saw Her Standing There." [The Daily News]

Paul was also Billy's guest at the final Shea shows. Two more Paul shows at Citi Field to go - the next of which is tonight (Saturday, 7/18). More pictures, some videos, and the complete setlist from last night, below...

FLUSHING, N.Y., June 3, 2009 - Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Paul McCartney will perform the historic first concerts at Citi Field - the new home of the Mets - Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18.

Tickets go on sale Monday, June 15 at 10:00 A.M. ET online exclusively at www.507tixx.com and by phone at 718-507-TIXX. These concerts are rain or shine.

These inaugural concert events at Citi Field mark the latest in a series of landmark performances that link the beloved Beatle with New York City and the home of the Mets. Beginning with The Beatles' legendary musical christening of Shea Stadium in 1965, and continuing with McCartney's special appearance at Billy Joel's "Last Play at Shea" show that closed the stadium last year, McCartney's summer shows at Citi Field will once again mark a momentous occasion in the history of New York - and rock n' roll itself.

"I am really excited about playing Citi Field - The Beatles were the first to play at Shea Stadium and along with Billy Joel, I was the last to sing at the old Shea," said Paul McCartney. "So to be the first to play this stadium is incredible. I am really looking forward to a buzzing show."

Shea Stadium

Shea Stadium, the new Brooklyn space that's hosting a Showpaper benefit with Fiasco, Dinowalrus and others on May 30th, is opening in full this weekend (May 22nd).

On Friday, May 22nd, Whack, Grocery Thief, and No One & the Somebodies play the venue. Then, Shea hosts a kick-off party on Sunday, May 24th with Golden Error, Pow Wow!, Bad Credit No Credit and Donner Party Picnic with the So So Glos DJing.

It turns out the venue is also rigged for live recording and has plans to release recorded shows on their website ("think Daytrotter with an audience").

Shea Stadium is a progressive art space that serves a dual purpose as both a recording studio and live music venue. Our deal is simple....bands are invited to come and use our space and our equipment free of charge to make a live recording of their set. During these live recording sessions our doors will be open to the public: all bands are encouraged to treat these sessions as a show and bring as many of their friends/fans as they like. A small cover charge at the door (we have to pay the bills right??) grants you admission to the entire night of sessions as everyone is welcome to stay for the duration of the evening's festivities. As both a studio and show space, our mission is to create a fun-loving environment that will bring out the best in all the bands who perform, as well as the audience.
The new venue was started by producer Adam Reich, who is a childhood friend, and the producer of, The So So Glos, who are some of the people behind Market Hotel. It's one big DIY family.
