As mentioned in What's Going on Thursday?, High Places play Glasslands tonight (8/18) with Soft Circle (featuring Hisham Bharoocha formerly of Lightning Bolt and Black Dice), Zambri, and Driphouse. Tickets are still on sale.

Zambri, who are also on the Glasslands bill tonight, recently signed to Kanine Records. They were set to play Summerscreen in McCarren Park on 8/3 along with a screening of Clueless but the show was rained out. It's since been rescheduled for August 24 at McCarren Park. The band are set to release their debut EP Glossolalia on November 8 via the label. They'll play a record release show at Glasslands on November 3. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Mi Ami

Mi Ami, the San Francisco trio of Daniel Martin-McCormick, Damon Palermo, and Jacob Long, are getting ready to release their second full-length "Steal Your Face" on April 6th and hitting the road in support of the album in the spring [April]. Keep an eye out for a European tour shortly following the initial trek and a FULL US Tour upon their return.
You can catch the first side of the Thrill Jockey band's recent 12" single "Cut Men," a drawn-out Oneida-esque jam, above. The track and the band in general explore the jammier side of punk (its members were formerly in D.C.'s Black Eyes). They travel from their California base for a tour this April. That includes a New York stop at Cake Shop on April 12th.

Album artork and tracklist and all tour dates are below...

Hot Legs @ the SPIN party @ Stubb's in Austin - March 20, 2009
SXSW

AUSTRALIA's THE AGE's SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST BREAKDOWN

Bizarre supergroup: Tinted Windows features members of Hanson, Cheap Trick, Smashing Pumpkins and Fountains of Wayne playing catchy guitar-pop.

The pin-up: Sienna-lookalike Little Boots combines pre-recorded beats with synth and live drummer.

Commercial breakthrough: Cutesy New Yorkers Chairlift are already featured on an iPod ad.

Novelty act: Hot Leg is the new 1980s hair-metal project for Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins.

Critical darlings: UK act Mumford and Sons and their four-part harmonies.

Stadium potential: London goths White Lies attempt to merge U2 and the Killers. Playing Splendour in the Grass.

Crowd favourite: Boston act Passion Pit -- big on hand claps and synths.

Best new band name: Airborne Toxic Event have just signed to Universal and combine Bruce Springsteen and the Hold Steady.

The novelty act played two shows (that I know of) at SXSW this past week. There was the Friday afternoon SPIN party (pictured above), and the 11pm set at Emo's Annex the next night. I caught the latter which satisfied my need to see the leader of the Darkness's new band at least once. I doubt i would go see them again, or even really listen to more than maybe a single, but they were fun, and they shred on guitar.

Mi Ami

"On a series of engaging 12" singles and a fascinating debut LP ("Watersports," released last month), Mi Ami stretches out and languishes in punk-dub, sideways-jazz and African accents. On stage, however, Long (bass) and Martin-McCormick (guitar, vocals) stuck to more direct strategy: attack. That mostly meant McCormick riding Long's gut-punch Rickenbacker bass riffs and Palermo's kinetic drum patterns like a banshee, spraying the songs with convulsive echo-guitar riffs."
[Washington Post on Mi Ami's 3/10 show]
The San Francisco three-piece (ex-Black Eyes) are playing with Mirror Mirror and local goth-rock quintet Extra Life (who just returned from a month-long US tour) at the Silent Barn in NYC tonight (3/12). Mi Ami then heads to SXSW for several parties (see below) and the Touch and Go/Quarterstick SXSW Showcase on Friday, March 20th at Flamingo Cantina, before a series of April/May dates in Europe.

The recently pared down Touch and Go released the band's Watersports LP (art below) on February 17th. All tour dates below....
