The Blow @ SXSW 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
The Blow

As the Bell House's Haiti benefit on Wednesday, January 27th approaches, the show's lineup keeps getting more and more interesting. Since the initial announcement a few changes have been made (The Walkmen replacing Cold War Kids for one) and more acts have been announced. The schedule below reflects the expected set times, with the disclaimers that "performers will be playing abbreviated, acoustic and/or stripped down sets" and "line up subject to change."

AC Newman (who's putting out a new New Pornographers record), Rhett Miller and Nicole Atkins are playing as a Seekers cover band (a supergroup similar to what St. Vincent & Bon Iver did at MHOW on Saturday). Zach Galifianakis was also at the BV Haiti event,

UPDATE: Despite a press release that went out, The Bell House says that Paul Rudd & Zach Galifianakis are not on this benefit (they never said they were, but the press release did). Also the venue says that the set times that were posted (including here last night) are wrong.

Freelance Whales (who have quite a few shows, NYC and otherwise, coming up) are playing, as is Ted Leo (who himself has longer shows planned).

One notable addition is The Blow, aka Kaela Maricich, who played Art Basel in Miami this December, but hasn't played NYC in quite a while (possibly since CMJ 2007).

Tickets for the benefit show are still on sale.

The Blow's last album was 2006's Paper Television, when Jona Bechtolt from YACHT was still in the group. For YACHT's upcoming tour, Bechtolt and member Claire Evans will bolster their live show (previously them and a laptop) by a band consisting of Rob Kieswetter of Bobby Birdman (who is also opening), Jeff Brodsky of Jeffrey Jerusalem, and D. Reuben Snyder of Rob Walmart. The backing band's name is 'The Straight Gaze'. A tour preview clip is posted below.

Eugene Mirman

So we've got the Del Close Marathon happening this weekend (8/14-8/16) and we've got the New York Comedy Festival happening in November. And now it is with unbridled enthusiasm that I can achieve a comedy-festival-posting-hat-trick by announcing the EUGENE MIRMAN COMEDY FESTIVAL which is set to take over Brooklyn venues Union Hall and the Bell House from September 17 - September 20. OK, so we briefly mentioned the festival before, but with line-ups, showtimes, as well as venue and ticket info just released, it's time to spread the word.

Curated by the great Eugene Mirman, this year's festival has a gasp worthy line-up that is truly beyond belief and will feature stand-up, panels, videos, special guests, 'theme' shows, the occasional free drink, after-parties, and much more. The highlight of the festival for me are two Daniel Kitson headlining gigs at Union Hall. Daniel is a British Stand-up comedian who I've only had the opportunity to see once, but that one experience was epic. More monologuist than stand-up comedian, he is one of the smartest, funniest, most energetic and eloquent performers I have ever seen. We are blessed to have two chances to see him headline such an intimate room. Besides that, the festival boasts appearances by Reggie Watts, Todd Barry, John Hodgman, Bobby Tisdale, AD Miles, Kristen Schaal, Michael Showalter, Marc Maron, John Mulaney, Jon Benjamin, and many many more. And, of course, Eugene.

The schedule so far is below. According to the folks in charge, even more excitement will be announced in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!! Tickets for all shows go on sale Sunday August 16 Saturday, August 15 at noon via Ticketweb (Bell House, Union Hall).

Full lineup and more below...

Patton Fan

Two films I've been dying to see quickly made their way in and out of our fair city this past June. Being an idiot that cannot seem to prioritize anything, I missed them both. The films I speak of are Big Fan starring Patton Oswalt and Visioneers starring Zach Galifianakis. You may recall from previous articles that Zach and Patton are among my favorite comedians of all time; thus the eagerness to see these films and the anguish at missing them. Big Fan is the directorial debut of Robert Siegel, the man wrote The Wrestler, a film that featured comedian Todd Barry (another favorite). In Big Fan, Patton plays the role of Paul.

Paul is a 35-year-old toll booth operator from Staten Island who lives and dies by his New York Giants. When he has a chance encounter with Giants linebacker Quantrell Bishop, however, things go horribly wrong and a brutal beating at the hands of his idol tests Paul's allegiance to the team. Comedian Patton Oswalt delivers a heartbreaking, layered performance in this pitch-black comedy that reveals the disturbing side of obsessive fandom.
Thankfully, word is out that Big Fan will begin showing in theaters in New York and Philadelphia August 28th, Los Angeles, D.C, Dallas and Houston theatres September 11th and then expanding! In the meantime, visit the official website for trailers and whatnot. And definitely check out Patton's diaries from when Big Fan played at Sundance back in January. Trailer below.

VisioneersHaving seen the trailer last year, I feel like Visioneers has been on my radar for a really long time. It definitely looks to be a somber, Orwellian, supremely dark comedy. The film, directed by Jared Drake, stars Galifianakis as George Washington Winsterhammerman.

George lives a comfortable yet completely uneventful life, and when he starts having dreams in which he's the first President of the United States, his doctor informs him that they could be signs of impending explosion. Later, as the dreams become more frequent and his co-workers continue to detonate, George is prompted to reevaluate his mundane existence.
It looks like that June 3 screening at the 92Y Tribeca may have been my only opportunity to see it theatrically; it comes out on DVD July 21st (using Zach's role in The Hangover to reach a broader audience) and there only seems to be independently organized screening parties scattered across the US. Trailer below.

Zach did a split 7" with Ted Leo a while back, available only via Chunklet.com and only available if you purchased another item from the Chunklet store. Now you no longer need to buy a second item in order to purchase the record. This extremely limited edition 7" is only $5 and is available on four different types of wax. Get 'em while they're hot!.

Radio Happy Hour

Radio Happy Hour [at (Le) Poisson Rouge] is a live variety show featuring an old-time radio comedy/drama and your favorite guest stars from the worlds of film, music, and letters. Hosted by Sam Osterhout, the show engages its guests in a wildly right-angled conversation that careens between interviews, performances, and trivia. And at the center of it all is a short, old time radio comedy in which the guest stars as him or herself or, in some cases, as Nancy Drew. Audiences will see all of this--the interviews, the corny jokes, the guest performances, and the behind-the-scenes making of a radio drama--from 2 to 3 pm on the second Saturdays of June, July, and August. Radio Happy Hour is an updated, New York version of Hee Haw. With more drinking. And sound effects. Trust us, it'll make sense when you see it.
The guests for the three scheduled Radio Happy Hours are Norah Jones, Michael Showalter, and Andrew W.K.. Tickets (only $5) are on sale now.

This summer, Norah Jones, who recently appeared on 30 Rock, is appearing in her second movie, Wah Do Dem, with Sean Bones. She also has a high profile gig with Rufus and Martha Wainwright scheduled for late August on the tip of Long Island, and probably some smaller ones scattered around too.

Andrew W.K. has a number of shows and projects coming up, including a Canadian tour, a gig at Santos Party House on Thursday, June 11th, and Cake Shop show June 12th.

Michael Showalter appears at Bonnaroo with Michael Ian Black this weekend (June 11-14). The pair will celebrate their new Comedy Central show, Michael and Michael Have Issues, at The Bell House with a comedy set and a screening of its premiere on July 15th. Tickets are on sale. Showalter will also be at All Points West on August 2nd.

Michael and Michael

Executive produced by Black, Showalter, Jim Biederman ("Whitest Kids U Know," "I'm With Busey") and Lou Wallach, "Michael and Michael Have Issues" stars Black and Showalter in a new twist on narrative and sketch comedies that features the long-time comedic partners as the hosts of their own fictitious sketch show. Sketches will be interspersed throughout the narrative thread of each episode."
Michael and Michael is a new show that premieres on Comedy Central on July 15th. That same night, the State/Stella veterans "will perform comedy sets leading up to the live broadcast of the show" at The Bell House in Brooklyn! Tickets are on sale.

Last Thursday, M&M shot "a theater scene in front of a live audience". Videos below...

All Points West

Following last year's inaugural event, festival producers began work immediately on resolving concerns expressed by fans in attendance. They have worked closely with their partners at NJ Transit to improve light-rail service and capacity. As an added value for 2009, festival goers who choose to travel to the site utilizing the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line can ride for free throughout the weekend with their ALL POINTS WEST festival ticket. Additionally, based on the popularity of the ferry as a mode of transportation from lower Manhattan to Liberty State Park, the frequency and size of the ferryboats will increase at a reduced price for festival attendees.... The producers have also worked with their partners at Liberty State Park to improve the fan experience in the beer gardens. This year's areas will be larger, have shorter lines, and feature shade tents, views of the stages and food concessions...
The second annual ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL returns to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey Friday, July 31, Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Like last year, bands will play on three stages, except "the Queen of the Valley stage has been changed to a Coachella-like tent creating an environment that will showcase comedy, DJs, electronic acts and bands."

More details on the items above will be posted at the apwfestival.com. The entire lineup (it's good!) and ticket info, below...

Amadou & Mariam @ All Points West 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Amadou and Mariam

The contest to guess the lineup of this year's All Point West festival continues. I honestly don't even know the lineup yet - I'll be receiving it right before I post it at 7am Monday morning.

Will Coldplay be on the lineup? A lot of people seem convinced based on the band's current tour schedule (which you can see in its entirety below). If they are playing the fest, well, that will be weird.

UPDATE: yes, Coldplay are in fact playing the festival

Amadou and Mariam played All Points West last year, are touring the US with Coldplay in July, and have some headlining dates scheduled in June (including a show at Webster Hall on June 8th). The Mali duo was also just added to this year's Bonnaroo lineup.

Also recently added to Bonnaroo (music and comedy): Public Enemy, Ani Difranco, the Itals and Wailing Souls, Murs, Shadows Fall, High on Fire, Janelle MonĂ¡e, Pretty Lights, Tony Rice, Passion Pit, Hockey, White Rabbits, Jimmy Fallon, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, John Oliver, Rob Riggle, Rory Albanese, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Aziz Ansari, Kristen Schaal, Arj Barker, Todd Barry, Nick Thune, Wayne Federman, Nick Kroll, Kurt Braunholer, Amy Schumer, Kumail Nanjiani and Pete Holmes. Full Bonnaroo (June 11 - 14 in Manchester, Tennessee) lineup below...

"On Tuesday night (12/9), a few of us ventured into Times Square to catch comedy troupe Stella at the Nokia Theatre. Stella is David Wain, Michael Showalter, and Michael Ian Black, all founding members of another comedy troupe, The State. Also, all film/TV actors/writers/directors. The Stella style of comedy is not for every taste, but it's for me. On Tuesday night's homecoming gig, the trio offered up a head-spinning assortment of absurd and abstract jokes, bits, and riffs. Their comedy is a stream-of-consciousness style that is hard to summarize, but it recalls the so-clever-it's-silly routines of Monty Python or the Marx Brothers.

Part of the show included a funny cameo by Paul Rudd, who has worked with the guys in films such as Wet Hot American Summer, The Baxter, and The Ten. Opening the show was fellow geek comic Eugene Mirman, stacked with his trademark dry wit and abstract social commentary. Both sets probably played best to the chemically-enhanced members of the audience. For those of us sticking to liquor, it was still a delight." [Matt Dentler]

Tonight/Wednesday is the 2nd of two NYC shows. More pictures from last night below...

Michael Showalter

JDub Records is delighted to announce that renowned comedy trio Stella will be back on the road this November. Formed in 1997, Stella features comedians David Wain, Michael Ian Black and everyone's favorite goof-off Michael Showalter.

Showalter first came to recognition as a cast member, writer, producer, and director of MTV's half hour sketch comedy show, The State, which aired from 1993-1995. Michael later went on to co-write and star in the cult classic film Wet Hot American Summer (2001), write, direct, and star in The Baxter (2005), as well as write, produce, and star in Comedy Central's televised Stella (also 2005). In addition to these many feats, Showalter also hosts the excellent online interview show The Michael Showalter Showalter on CollegeHumor.com (you can see the episodes here: http://www.collegehumor.com/tag:michaelshowalter); recent guests include Andy Samberg, Paul Rudd, David Cross and Michael Cera. Showalter's 2007 album, Sandwiches and Cats, out on JDub Records, gleefully inhabits "the comedy danger zone that hovers between too far and just enough" (The New York Times).

Though they rarely tour as a collective, a typical Stella show guarantees audiences a playful mix of mainstream comedy and surrealist wit. Their absurd approach to the mundane promises that no show is the same as the last. So why don't you find out for yourself?

They never really did break up. In fact, you might have caught the trio earlier this month at NY Mag's 40th Anniversary party @ Hammerstein Ballroom. Individually, they are not that rare either (which is a good thing), well Michael Showalter especially, who, for instance, just performed with John Vanderslice at the opening of the 92YTribeca way back before CMJ (10/18). That's where the pictures in this post came from.

Stella play the Nokia Theatre in NYC on December 9th and 10th. Tickets are on sale. More tour dates below...

Neko Case and Lucy Wainwright Roche

It went Michael Showalter --> Kristin Schaal --> Kristen Schaal & Kurt Braunholer --> Neko Case & Lucy Wainwright Roche --> Eugene Mirman --> Todd Barry. It was June 5, 2008 @ Southpaw in Brooklyn. Plus, the whole thing was hosted by LA's Andrew Donnelly who I guess counts as the "super special guest" (though Kurt wasn't on the bill either).

And, yes, Neko and Lucy performed TOGETHER (as you can see in the pictures above). I didn't realize they would do that. It was just the two of them, their mics and a guitar. Unfortunately, they only played two songs - both covers, one of which was a kind of a half-joking semi-disaster. For about a minute though - during the second song, the half-filled Southpaw got a little bit of magic from the ladies, and all in an extra special intimate setting.... for $25, but it was for a very good cause. Honestly, they could have played a few more songs, but I'm not complaining. The comedy part was almost all funny from start to finish and there weren't even supposed to be musical guests originally. Did I mention it was for a good cause?

I'm glad I went. I was a bit torn about missing the Black Lips/Titus/Gringo show.

Kristin and Kurt showed episode 5 of their hilarious series "Penelope Princess of Pets". You can watch episode 1 below...

Eugene Mirman fighting for Union Hall, May 8, 2008
Eugene Mirman fighting for union Hall

Late last month some residents of Park Slope secured themselves a Community Board meeting with CB6 to air their complaints about Union Hall, and attempt to stop their liquor license from getting renewed. The meeting took place last night, lasted more than two hours, and to everyone's surprise -- the board voted against Union Hall. The vote of six to two (with two abstentions) means CB6 will advise the State Liquor Authority (SLA) against renewing the liquor license of Union Hall.

The meeting was mostly an open forum for the Board to hear voices in favor of and against the bar/venue's presence in the neighborhood. The voices against were predominantly residents of the Union Avenue block Union Hall is located at, led by community activist Jon Crow (aka "Old Man Crow"). The supporters of the bar consisted of patrons, employees, and regular performers at the venue including Michael Showalter and Eugene Mirman.... [Gothamist]

The article goes on to say that although Union Hall lost this fight, the neighbors are still unlikely to get the bar shut down.
