Day two (7/31) of Newport Folk Festival featured performances by The Cave Singers, Wanda Jackson, Justin Townes Earle, Middle Brother, Elvis Costello, M. Ward, Emmylou Harris and others. If you missed the fest, you can listen to archives of the sets at NPR.
Like they've done in the past, Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello performed together on one of Elvis's songs. She performed guest vocals with him and The Imposters on "Scarlet Tide."

John McCauley, Jonny Corndawg, Matt Vasquez @ BV-SXSW
Jonny Corndawg is releasing his album Down on the Bikini Line on August 30. He'll celebrate the release of the album that same day (8/30) at Union Pool. Other bands TBA. John McCauley of Deer Tick provides guitar on the album. Check out the artwork and stream two tracks below.
The Union Pool show is 4 days after Jonny Corndawg plays The Saint in Asbury Park, NJ (8/26) with Jessica Lea Mayfield. Tickets are on sale now. Jessica Lea Mayfield recently contributed a cover of Nirvana's "Lounge Act" to Newermind. Kinda funny that Deer Tick isn't on that album.
Speaking of Deer Tick, friends, lovers and frequent tourmates Those Darlins are currently on an extensive tour that includes some dates this month with Old 97's. Those Darlins will hit NYC on October 14 at The Bell House. Tickets are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
As mentioned, Middle Brother (featuring John McCauley of Deer Tick) are not done yet and will play a rare set at Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island at the end of the month. It is their only scheduled date though. Delta Spirit (whose singer is also in Middle Brother) also play the SOLD OUT fest. Middle Brother, Dawes, Cordawg & Deer Tick played Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall in April, not long after Middle Brother and Deer Tick (and Corndawg) played a set at the Partisan Records/BV day party in Austin that The Old 97's also played. A belated set of pictures from that free show at Barbarella are in this post. More of them below.
Dawes (whose singer and drummer are also in Middle Brother) are currently touring overseas, but will return next week and head out on tour with Alison Krauss & Union Station (featuring Jerry Douglas). That tour hits Beacon Theater on August 2nd (the show is sold out though tickets are still available for the NJ show happening one day later). All dates are listed below.
Deer Tick also has dates coming up including a free show at Pier 54 (8/11) with DOM. More dates below.
Jo Schornikow of the John McCauley approved Shivers plays on Sunday (7/24) at Death by Audio as part of the "Permanent Wave's SOUND WAVE to Benefit the International Women's Health Coalition" at the all ages venue. Amy Klein of Titus Andronicus, Ian O'Neil of Deer Tick's previous band, is on the bill too.

Jonny Corndawg, Matthew Vasquez, Taylor Goldsmith
"There's a singer-songwriter intimacy in many of the songs on Middle Brother, as though band members John McCauley, Taylor Goldsmith and Matthew Vasquez were sharing secrets and anecdotes and decided to set them to music. All three men belong to bands -- Deer Tick, Dawes and Delta Spirit -- that trade on folk, blues and country traditions; even their up-tempo songs are less rave-up rockers than hand-clapping foot-stompers." [NPR]That blurb comes from a March 28th (yesterday) NPR feature on Middle Brother that you can listen to at NPR's site. On April 3rd Middle Brother kick off a west coast tour, but earlier this month they toured through NYC on their way to SXSW, and while they were here they played epic shows at both Music Hall of Williamsburg and Bowery Ballroom with opening collaborative sets by Deer Tick, Dawes, Jonny Corndawg and Matthew Vasquez. The MHOW show ended with everyone back out on stage during the encore, along with special guest Phosphorescent for the final jam of the night.
Since then I saw Middle Brother again at SXSW, where, like in NYC, the country-stylish Jonny Corndawg (as seen in today's NY Post) almost stole the show. The Austin show I saw was the BrooklynVegan Day Party at Barbarella, but they also played an official showcase at Auditorium Shores which is streaming at NPR.
I just realized that not only haven't I posted the SXSW pictures yet, I never even post the NY ones, so here is the set from Bowery Ballroom and it continues below...

Middle Brother over Corndawg (more by Tim Griffin)
As the "Middle Brother" release date of March 1st approaches, the band have released the title-track from their self-titled debut album. Grab the MP3 for the first time above, or listen to the song in the band's new iPhone app. Pre-order the album via Partisan Records.
Middle Brother (the band) is comprised of the unmistakable three voices of Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit, but in "Middle Brother" (the song) you'll also recognize the voice of Jonny Corndawg who also helped them write the tune.
Middle Brother kick off their first-ever tour on March 2nd in Washington DC. That's the tour that will include FULL SETS by Middle Brother AND Deer Tick AND Dawes on almost all March dates including on March 5th at Music Hall of Williamsburg and March 6th at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets to both of those shows are still on sale.
Jonny Corndawg (pictured above) will be on the tour and performing at all Middle Brother shows, though he'll only be playing full opening sets at the newly-added April California shows (list below). After California, Corndawg heads back to NYC in time to finish off another Brooklyn residency - last time it was at Union Pool, this time it's at Brooklyn Bowl (April 4, 11, 18 & 25).
Middle Brother's March run ends at SXSW in March. There the band play the previously-mentioned Ground Control Touring showcase at Auditorium Shores on March 19th, and they will play a BrooklynVegan day party one day earlier - March 18th & Swan Dive/Barabarella. BrooklynVegan (we) have teamed up with Partisan Records and Knitting Factory for a free, afternoon, 3-stage event. It will be Middle Brother's only day party, and Deer Tick are on the bill too. The rest of the lineup and more details TBA. Stay tuned.
Back to NYC for a second, this related show is also happening:

John & Ian & barrels of wine
After a rousing opening set by duo The Shivers, Deer Tick frontman John McCauley and Deer Tick guitarist Ian O'Neil (who also used to be in Titus Andronicus) took turns playing completely solo and with each other at their show at City Winery in NYC last night (1/19). In front of an over-packed house, they each used their voices and guitars as instruments, and sometimes John sat down at the piano. Speaking of sitting down, that's what most of the crowd was doing, at their tables where food, beer, and especially wine were flowing. Others were standing around the edges of the spacious venue because there weren't any seats left.
The setlist was heavy on Deer Tick classics that I was especially happy to hear stripped down, included brand new unrecorded songs (often the ones Ian sang), Middle Brother songs (including the song "Middle Brother" with assistance from special guest and audience member Jonny Corndawg who helped write the song), a Replacements cover, and a John Prine cover. They closed with a festive cover of Buddy Holly's "Oh Boy." The only dissapointment was that John had a piano at his disposal and he didn't use it to play "Christ Jesus."
The merch table had Jonny Corndawg-created Beavis & Butthead (John & Ian) airbrushed shirts for sale, and the venue was selling limited edition bottles of City Winery-made John McCauley 'petit shiraz' wine (pictures below).
Go catch John and Ian on tour with each other now, catch Corndawg out on tour with Dawes, and see Middle Brother when they tour with Deer Tick and Dawes in March (tickets are still on sale for both NYC shows). Everyone's dates are listed HERE.
More pictures and some videos from City Winery, and videos from Union Pool too, below...
As you mostly already know, Middle Brother is a group consisting of the frontmen from Deer Tick, Delta Spirit and Dawes (and the drummer from Dawes). Jonny Corndawg, who has upcoming dates with Deer Tick and Dawes, also contributed to the new Middle Brother album. Middle Brother is going on a tour with Dawes and Deer Tick in March. That tour includes shows at Bowery Ballroom, MHOW and SXSW. Now all dates have been announced (and listed below), and tickets for the NYC (and other) shows go on sale at noon.
Jonny Corndawg, who has just one week left in his Union Pool residency, is running the Surf City USA Marathon in California soon after he gets done touring with Dawes (on Superbowl Sunday to be exact). At the risk of it seeming like a conflict of interest, I took Jonny up on an his offer to be one of his race sponsors. The money he raised from BrooklynVegan and six other sponsors helped him do what he needed to do... including making an outfit with all the sponsor logos on it which is the coolest part. I can't wait to see the picture from the race (hopefully with him holding a trophy). In the meantime we have the picture of Jonny sporting sweet blue shorts, which is with all tour dates, below...

As previously mentioned, Middle Brother is the alt-country supergroup consisting of Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit (each the frontman of their respective bands). As also mentioned, that group is releasing a self-titled album on March 1st. And now the first tour dates in support of that album have appeared.
Middle Brother AND Deer Tick AND Dawes (but not Delta Spirit even though Matt will be there as a member of Middle Brother) will each play a set at Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 5th, Bowery Ballroom on March 6th, and Theatre of Living Arts in Philly on March 9th. All three shows go on sale Friday at noon (worth noting: Deer Tick, Dawes and Delta Spirit have all headlined their own shows at Webster Hall already).
Middle Brother will also play the Ground Control Touring SXSW showcase at Auditorium Shores in Austin on Saturday, March 19th with Bright Eyes, the Felice Brothers and Man Man. Stay tuned for more dates.
MEANWHILE, catch John McCauley on his solo tour with The Shivers that kicks off January 14th in Boston, and catch Middle Brother contributor Jonny Corndawg at one of his upcoming shows too. Some of those Corndawg dates are with Dawes this month. All Dawes dates and some videos below...

Jonny Corndawg at a 2010 BV-CMJ Day Party (more by Chris Gersbeck)
Jonny Corndawg will kick off a Brooklyn residency at Union Pool tonight (1/4). Fellow Deer Tick collaborators Liz Isenberg and Bed Pigs open the show. Bed Pigs = Deer Tick's ex-guitar player Andy T (the guitar player before Ian from Titus Andronicus took over). Corndawg will also play the venue on the next two Tuesdays, bringing Pepi Ginsberg & Alana Amram on for support on 1/11, and Buffalo Stance & The Extraordinaires (who used to be Jonny's backing band) for Jan 18th. Each show will cost you $8 at the door (and free blue Mountain Dew to the first 10 paying customers in the door).
Jonny Corndawg celebrated the new year by posting a new track to his Bancdcamp page. The song "Down on The Bikini Line" is streaming below, but you can get a downloadable copy for the price of an email address.
Jonny Corndawg can also be found on the debut album by Middle Brother. You might remember them as MG&V...
"Middle Brother to release debut album in March.Jonny Corndawg also played with MG&V aka Middle Brother at that SXSW show, or to be more specific, he performed "Middle Brother" with the band. It's a song he helped write which now shares a name with both the full album and the band. It's track #4 on the new album and you'll need to wait a while to hear it, but track #8, "Me Me Me", can be downloaded now for free above. Pre-order the album at Partisan. Check out the full tracklist below.
Partisan Records is excited to announce that Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit have joined forces to make a very special record. The self-titled debut, recorded in January 2010 in Nashville, will be released on March 1, 2011.
Middle Brother played their first show at 2010's SXSW - a tiny, late-night, unannounced event under the moniker "MG&V." Other than recording the album and rehearsing once, they had never played the songs live. The audience (and the mob of onlookers crammed in the doorways and windows) was treated to an impossible-to-forget set by a band of musical comrades who seemed genuinely surprised by the fire that was ignited on stage. It was a rollicking and boisterous show that could have fallen apart at any moment and instead centrifuged into melodic and harmonic brilliance. What held it together was each member's sense of song and performance - a perfect, intuitive balance of craft and feel, equal parts playful and earnest."
Middle Brother played their first show as "Middle Brother" on December 20th at The Troubadour in Hollywood. It was a holiday benefit with Cass McCombs, Mountain Man and Deer Tick also on the bill. They have no upcoming shows scheduled, but some will surely appear as the album release date gets closer.
Besides the Brooklyn shows, Corndawg will also hit York, PA before heading out to the West Coast for a string of dates. John and Ian from Deer Tick kick off their own solo tour later this month. Corndawg's full tour schedule, song stream and stuff, below...
