Blitz

Brooklyn rapper Blitz the Ambassador has two East Coast shows happening this week, a DC show on Thursday (3/19) at Howard Theatre (tickets) and a FREE Brooklyn show on Friday (3/20) at Brooklyn Night Bazaar with Karikatura, King Holiday and DJ Mikey Palms.

Blitz's newest album, Afropolitan Dreams, came out last year on Jakarta Records. It's a diverse record, bringing together golden era boom bap, psychedelic guitars, old school funk horns, afrobeat polyrhythms, and more into its eclectic sound. You can stream the whole thing and watch the video for "Make You No Forget" featuring Seun Kuti, below.

His BK Bazaar show is part of a DeFalco Presents/A.R.T.S.Y. Magazine-curated weekend at the venue. That also includes Saturday's (3/21) show with Denitia & Sene, The Funk Ark, Mamarazzi and (U)nity. It's billed as the release party for Denitia & Sene's 2014 EP, Side.fx. You can stream the danceable title track from that EP below.

And, it's true:

"A long-standing Park Slope concert hall will close and become a tutoring school now that the hood caters more to kiddies than roadies, owners say.

Southpaw -- the legendary music venue that hosted the likes of Patti Smith and Joan Jett -- will close on Fifth Avenue and Sterling Place by the end of February, according to co-owner and music guru Mikey Palms.

"I'm kind of over Park Slope -- it's not a destination for nightlife anymore," said Palms, who also owns Public Assembly NYC in Williamsburg. "It's time to go."

He said a firm called New York City Kids will soon replace the grocery store-sized house of music, offering academic tutoring and rock climbing for tots." [Brooklyn Paper]

The Phenomenal Handclap Band

"We are so very pleased to introduce you to our latest signing, The Phenomenal Handclap Band. They're an NYC supergroup led by veteran producers Daniel Collas and Sean Marquand, and featuring contributions from L'Trimm, Calla, Sí Se, TV on the Radio, The Dap Kings, & The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. PHB blend psychedelic space disco & smooth 60s-style soul perfectly with early hip hop, and moody, synth-soaked hooks. We'll be releasing their debut album this summer. " [Friendly Fire Recordings]
The band's next, and only upcoming gig is a free show at Southpaw in Brooklyn on Tuesday, May 12th with Golden Triangle and Wizardry. Details on that, and some videos of PHB at SXSW, below...
